Exploring End-User Environments For The Control And Programming Of Collaborative Robots, Luiz Felipe Fronchetti Dias

To collaborate with the ongoing development of robotics, this thesis highlights three research contributions to collaborative robot programming. The first study evaluates block-based programming as an alternative for two-armed robots. A commercial solution is put in contrast with a block-based programming language. Both programming solutions are evaluated by 52 participants in an experiment involving a pick-and-place task. This study brings insights into human-robot collaboration, including robot positioning and interaction challenges. The second study discusses using mixed-reality devices as a potential workaround to the manual positioning of industrial and collaborative robots. Laryngeal cancer is the most common type of head and neck cancer and is associated with poor prognosis due to common delayed diagnoses. The sex disparities associated with laryngeal cancer are constantly growing, as the risk of malignancy in males is continually increasing compared to women. Due to the high chance of late-stage diagnosis requiring aggressive treatments, there is a high demand for less aggressive treatment options and early-stage diagnostic markers. Nanomagnetic devices have emerged as a promising alternative to conventional complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) devices due to their low energy dissipation and inherent non-volatility. This thesis investigates the use of nanomagnetic memory devices as both conventional Boolean memory and multistate memory for hardware AI applications.

There are various ways to produce lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (NCM) based cathodes for lithium-ion batteries, among them; co-precipitation synthesis carried out in tank-based reactors followed by lithiation is commonly employed because of its cost-effectiveness and scalability. Although it is the preferred synthesis method, it has several issues and challenges. Discussed in this dissertation are some of these issues as well as potential solutions. Despite only comprising 0.1% of the myofiber surface area, a healthy motor endplate is densely packed with acetylcholine receptors (AChRs) responsible for mediating activity between the connected motor neuron and skeletal muscle via the neurotransmitter, acetylcholine. Loss of the endplate, known as fragmentation, is caused by car crashes, deep lacerations, and other traumatic injuries to the innervating nerve or direct injuries to the limb muscle(s) with intramuscular denervation as a common comorbidity. In both cases, endplate fragmentation begins within a week of injury proceeding muscle atrophy causing decreased mobility, paralysis, and quality of life. T cells are adaptive immune cells found in lymph nodes, thymus, spleen, bone marrow, and around biomaterials, significantly impacting the degree of inflammation and wound healing. Annealing is a critical process in modern GaN technology, essential for achieving p-type conductivity by activating the MgGa acceptor, as first demonstrated by Shuji Nakamura in the early 1990s. Despite the omnipresence of hydrogen as an impurity in GaN crystals, the precise mechanisms governing hydrogen diffusion and acceptor passivation remain only partially understood. This research focuses on the development and application of Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs)-based nanocomposites for the photocatalytic removal of pharmaceutical contaminants, with a specific emphasis on ciprofloxacin (CIP). The photocatalytic degradation of CIP was investigated using as-synthesized photocatalysts of TiO2 nanowires (TiO2NWs), bare MOF of NH2-MIL-125, TiO2NW/NH2-MIL-125 composite, and Lanthanum (La)-doped composite. Intriguingly, the TiO2NW/NH2-MIL-125 composite exhibited the highest efficiency, achieving a photodegradation rate of 0.0111 min-1, surpassing the independent performances of bare MOF of NH2-MIL-125 and TiO2NW. Electrospinning is utilized to fabricate catalytic nanofiber scaffold for biocrude upgrading in hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) following computational studies suggesting the need for nano-catalysts for efficient HDO conversion and selectivity. Here, Pt-TiO2 nanofibers are fabricated through electrospinning, followed by wet impregnation with a heteropoly acid (HPA), tungstosilicic acid. Intensive heat treatments were incorporated during and after processes to obtain a HPA doped Pt-TiO2 nano-catalyst. Catalytic HDO was performed in a batch reactor with phenol as the raw biocrude dissolved in hexadecane. Flood risk analyses often focus on a single flooding source, typically storm surge or rainfall-driven flooding, depending on the predominant threat. However, hurricanes frequently cause compound flooding through significant storm surges accompanied by heavy rainfall. This study employs a hydrodynamic model based on Delft3D-Flexible Mesh that couples flow, waves, and rainfall-driven flow to simulate five historical tropical cyclones in Virginia's southeast coastal region. These storms produced varying intensities of storm surge and rainfall in the study area. Photovoltaic (PV) systems are widely adopted for renewable energy generation, but their performance is influenced by complex interactions between longer-term trends and seasonal variations. This study aims to remove these factors and provide valuable insights for optimising PV system operation. We employ comprehensive datasets of measured PV system performance over five years, focusing on identifying the distinct contributions of longer-term trends and seasonal effects. Stratospheric aerosol injection (SAI) and gene drive organisms (GDOs) have been proposed as technological responses to complex entrenched environmental challenges. They also share several characteristics of emerging risks, including extensive uncertainties, systemic interdependencies, and risk profiles intertwined with societal contexts. This Perspective conducts a comparative analysis of the two technologies, and identifies ways in which their research and policy communities may learn from each other to inform future risk governance strategies. Fast pressure-sensitive paint (PSP) was applied to an inlet/isolator designed using the Osculating Internal Waverider Inlet with Parallel Streamlines (OIWPS) method. The dorsal isolator surface pressure was measured using anodized-aluminum PSP through transparent cast acrylic that makes up the ventral portion of the isolator. Temperature-sensitive paint was utilized to correct for the PSP’s temperature sensitivity. This data delves into the hydrodynamic intricacies within an open channel featuring continuous double-layered vegetation along both banks. Measurements are undertaken using nonintrusive laser diagnostics (LDV) to assess velocity, shear stress, and turbulence intensity. Two double-layered vegetation configurations, uniform growth (A1) and mixed growth (A2), were examined in conjunction with four aspect ratios (AR-6.67, 5.00, 4.00, and 2.63). The raw data were acquired using "BSA Flow Software v5.00", provided by DANTEC DYNAMICS, Denmark, and the extracted data used for the analysis was included in the Excel sheets for the purpose of sharing.

Scientists often utilize personal laptops and workstations for initial research stages and turn to high-performance computing (HPC) supercomputers for compute-intensive tasks. However, seamless transitions between these environments are vital for enhancing productivity and accelerating research progress. Our paper presents the Cybershuttle Notebook Gateway, an open-source framework crafted to streamline this transition, optimize resource utilization, and reduce time-to-science for researchers. Skin cancer is a widespread and perilous disease that necessitates prompt and precise detection for successful treatment. This research introduces a thorough method for identifying skin lesions by utilizing sophisticated deep learning (DL) techniques. The study utilizes three convolutional neural networks (CNNs)-CNN1, CNN2, and CNN3-each assigned to a distinct categorization job. Task 1 involves binary classification to determine whether skin lesions are present or absent. Task 2 involves distinguishing between benign and malignant lesions.
