Design Of Multi-Objective And Optimal Sliding Mode Controller For Tracking Knee Joint Angle During Squatting And Normal Gait Motion, Gabriel Sitler
Design Of Multi-Objective And Optimal Sliding Mode Controller For Tracking Knee Joint Angle During Squatting And Normal Gait Motion, Gabriel Sitler
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
This work presents two objectives for the use of robust sliding mode controller (SMC) in optimal and multi-objective settings to regulate the position of the knee joint angle for patients suffering from knee injuries. The controller imitates the role of active orthoses that produce the joint torques required to overcome gravity and loading forces and regain natural human movements. The first objective is to focus only on the knee, for which a mathematical model of the shank, the lower part of the leg, is derived first and then used for the control system design and computer simulations. Four objectives are …

Numerical Design, Fabrication, And Characterization Of Porous Tissue Scaffolds For Bone Regeneration, Brandon Coburn
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
With the recent advancements within biomedical engineering of bone tissue scaffolds, there is still a need to develop mechanically robust and biocompatible with low immunogenicity for bone regeneration. Additionally, the evaluation of the fluid dynamics of the porous Triply Periodic Minimal Surfaces (TPMS) bone scaffold also shows the need for investigation due to the complex fluid interaction of hemodynamics that occurs with the scaffold internal and external domains. To aid in the development of treating bone fractures, defects, and diseases. Furthermore, with the induction of a wide variety of TPMS architecture that yields different topologies, the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) …

Evaluation Of Driveway Assistance Device (Dad) Systems In One-Lane Two-Way Work Zone, Mm Shakiul Haque, Aemal J. Khattak, Li Zhao
Mid-America Transportation Center: Final Reports and Technical Briefs
Lane closure on two-lane highways due to the presence of work zones negatively impacts traffic safety and operational efficiency. Additionally, traffic from access points (e.g., commercial and residential driveways, or minor side roads) within work zones make operations more complicated and inefficient. Deploying a driveway assistance device (DAD) system can enable more efficient traffic control for work zones with access points. While traffic agencies are becoming interested in DAD deployments, research on such systems is relatively sparse. This research was the first in-depth operational investigation of the DAD system under different signal strategies, traffic conditions, and work zone characteristics. This …

Plant growth and food security depend heavily on phosphorus (P). Recovering and recycling P from animal, municipal, and food waste streams can significantly reduce dependency on traditional mineral P. This is particularly pertinent in the EU regions with limited native P supplies. The agronomic performance of including P-based recycling-derived fertilisers (two struvite and two ashes) or cattle slurry was compared to a conventional mineral P fertilisation programme along with no P and no fertiliser controls over three years. A field-scale experiment was set up to evaluate the perennial ryegrass dry matter yield (DMY), P uptake, and soil test P effects. …

Monitoring of groundwater (GW) resources in coastal areas is vital for human needs, agriculture, ecosystems, securing water supply, biodiversity, and environmental sustainability. Although the utilization of water quality index (WQI) models has proven effective in monitoring GW resources, it has faced substantial criticism due to its inconsistent outcomes, prompting the need for more reliable assessment methods. Therefore, this study addressed this concern by employing the data-driven root mean squared (RMS) models to evaluate groundwater quality (GWQ) in the coastal Bhola district near the Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh. To enhance the reliability of the RMS-WQI model, the research incorporated …

The adoption of connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) has sparked considerable interest across diverse industries, including public transportation, underground mining, and agriculture sectors. However, CAVs' reliance on sensor readings makes them vulnerable to significant threats. Manipulating these readings can compromise CAV network security, posing serious risks for malicious activities. Although several anomaly detection (AD) approaches for CAV networks are proposed, they often fail to: i) detect multiple anomalies in specific sensor(s) with high accuracy or F1 score, and ii) identify the specific sensor being attacked. In response, this paper proposes a novel framework tailored to CAV networks, called CAV-AD, for …

Tuning Selectivity Of Ni/Al2o3 Catalysts In Co2 Hydrogenation By Addition Of N, S-Doped Carbon, Nipitpon Jarumalai
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This study investigates the enhancement of Ni/Al₂O₃ catalysts for CO₂ hydrogenation by incorporating nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon (NSC). A series of catalysts Ni/Al2O3 and its NSC-modified counterparts (Ni1NSC/Al2O3, Ni3NSC/Al2O3, Ni7NSC/Al2O3, and Ni15NSC/Al2O3) were synthesized via thermal treatment under a nitrogen atmosphere and systematically characterized. Techniques including TGA, Raman spectroscopy, and XPS confirmed successful NSC incorporation. Further structural and surface analysis using TEM, XRD, CO-IR, CO2-TPD, H2-TPD, and H2-TPR revealed that NSC modification influenced Ni dispersion, surface basicity, hydrogen activation, and the electronic state of Ni species. Catalytic performance was evaluated in a fixed-bed reactor under a CO2:H2 ratio of …

Strain engineering is an effective strategy in modulating activity of electrocatalysts, but the effect of strain on electrochemical stability of catalysts remains poorly understood. In this work, we combine ab initio thermodynamics and molecular dynamics simulations to examine the role of compressive and tensile strain in the interplay between activity and stability of metal oxides considering RuO2 and IrO2 as exemplary catalysts. We reveal that although compressive strain leads to improved activity via the adsorbate-evolving mechanism of the oxygen evolution reaction, even small strains should substantially destabilize these catalysts promoting dissolution of transition metals. In contrast, our results …

Undergraduate Research Posters 2024
BCI (Brain-Computer Interfaces) implement various aspects of brain activity monitoring and analysis technologies. EEG (electroencephalogram) has proven to be a viable way to safely probe electromagnetic brain activity through non-surgical means. However, these devices are not viable for everyday consumer use, specifically amongst people with disabilities. This project aims to develop a means of processing data to optimize the use of a single-channel EEG. For this purpose, the output of a mind flex headset by Mattel was processed to quantify six different thought commands (up, down, left, right, forward, backward) from one subject. The data was analyzed via a computational …

The utilization of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) subjected to carbonation processing represents a viable strategy to mitigate anthropogenic CO2 emissions associated with concrete production, potentially contributing to the achievement of carbon neutrality. However, existing studies have limitations in effectively predicting the varying carbonation capacities of different SCMs, a gap that this research aims to address. Recent research efforts focused on the carbonation of waste-material-sourced SCMs are reviewed, along with a comparative discussion on diverse carbonation methods. A detailed data set encapsulating the properties of SCMs, and carbonation configurations was compiled. At the same time, six ensemble learning models were …

A movable camera travels along an inspection path for optically inspecting an inspection surface of an object for defect detection. In planning the inspection path, a set of viewpoints on the inspection surface is generated. Each viewpoint is associated with a patch, which is a largest area of the inspection surface within a field of view (FOV) of the camera when the camera is located over the viewpoint for capturing an image of FOV. An effective region of the patch is advantageously predicted by a neural network according to a three-dimensional geometric characterization of the patch such that the predicted …

Predicting stratified ground consolidation effectively remains a challenge in geotechnical engineering, especially when it comes to quickly and dependably determining the coefficient of consolidation ((Formula presented.)) for each soil layer. This difficulty primarily stems from the time-intensive nature of the consolidation process and the challenges in efficiently simulating this process in laboratory settings and using numerical methods. Nevertheless, the consolidation of stratified ground is crucial because it governs ground settlement, affecting the safety and serviceability of structures situated on or in such ground. In this study, an innovative method utilizing a physics-informed neural network (PINN) is introduced to predict stratified …

Knowledge of the soil water content (SWC) is important for many aspects of agriculture and must be monitored to maximize crop yield, efficiently use limited supplies of irrigation water, and ensure optimal nutrient management with minimal environmental impact. Single-location sensors are often used to monitor SWC, but a limited number of point measurements is insufficient to measure SWC across most fields since SWC is typically very heterogeneous. To overcome this difficulty, several researchers have used data acquired from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to predict the SWC by using machine learning on a limited number of point measurements acquired across a …

During hydraulic fracturing in deep shale gas reservoirs, it is difficult to pump proppants long distances, and self-supported fractures are formed at the far and upper ends of the fractures. The self-supported fracture could hold the fracture space by its surface structure again fracture closure. However, it faces various aspects of impairment during shale gas reservoir development, which affect its conductivity. Among the impairment, long-term production results in a decline of bottom hole pressure, which will compact the fracture space, and self-supported fractures without proppant are more sensitive than those with proppant. In this paper, we conducted a series of …
