Identification Of Messenger Molecule For Immuno-Antibacterial Infection Drug Discovery With The Usage Of Bio-Ai, Minqiao (Lisa) Jin
Bioengineering Master's Theses
Facing the danger of Gram-positive bacterial infection, mammalian cells have their defense line. A functional proteomics study aided with Deep Learning indicates the direct interaction between collagen V from mammalian cell membrane and Sortase A which catalyzes the display of virulence factors on the gram positive bacteria. And CHO cell proteomes conducted with the use artificial intelligence via Tensorflow and found that the identified anti collagen V binds to Sortase A of S. aureus and regulates its monomer-homodimer equilibrium, which is responsible for the bacterial cell wall sorting activity. Our results suggest that the collagen V plays an instrumental role …

Engineering Stealthy Exosomes For Drug Delivery, Chris Olson, Mika Domingo
Bioengineering Senior Theses
Exosomes, a class of extracellular vesicles (EVs) are emerging as a new scientific and therapeutic tool for imaging, disease diagnostics, and drug delivery. Exosomes' excellent biological properties make them a strong candidate for surface modification as well as exogenous drug loading. While exosomes have excellent natural biocompatibility properties as well as low immunogenicity, they are still eliminated in the patient’s body through the immune system, mainly through phagocytosis by macrophages. In this report, we aim to aid exosomes in avoiding this elimination method by modifying them through surface display with antiphagocytic factors. We will use CD24 and CD47 “don't eat …

A Low-Cost And Low-Tech Solution To Test For Variations Between Multiple Offline Programming Software Packages., Steffen Wendell Bolz
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This research paper chronicles the attempt to bring forth a low-cost and low-tech testing methodology whereby multiple offline programming (OLP) software packages’ generated programs may be compared when run on industrial robots. This research was initiated by the discovery that no real research exists to test between iterations of OLP software packages and that most research for positional accuracy and/or repeatability on industrial robots is expensive and technologically intensive. Despite this, many countries’ leaders are pushing for intensive digitalization of manufacturing and Small and Mediumsized Enterprises (SMEs) are noted to be lagging in adoption of such technologies. The research consisted …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications
Terminal lakes are disappearing worldwide because of direct and indirect human activities. Floating photovoltaics (FPV) are a synergistic system with increased energy output because of water cooling, while the FPV reduces water evaporation. This study explores how low-cost foam-based floatovoltaic systems can mitigate the disappearance of natural lakes. A case study is performed on 10%–50% FPV coverage of terminal and disappearing Walker Lake. Water conservation is investigated with a modified Penman-Monteith evapotranspiration method and energy generation is calculated with an operating temperature model experimentally determined from foam-based FPV. Results show FPV saves 52,000,000 m3/year of water and US$6,000,000 at 50% …

Engineering Science Faculty Publications
Peripheral nerve injuries are common consequences of extremity trauma or chronic compression with a prevalence of 43.8 per 1 million people (on average) reported in the United States annually, accompanied by a yearly increase in cost of care. Patients suffering from these injuries require surgical procedures and rehabilitative strategies to reinforce their extensive recovery. Several studies have found that the application of electrical stimulation can accelerate peripheral nerve regeneration, thus shortening the time of peripheral nerve growth and reducing the cost of care (Willand et al., 2016). The electrical stimulation paradigms that effectively enhanced functional recovery in most studies employed …

Machine learning (ML)-based prediction of non-linear composition-strength relationship in concretes requires a large, complete, and consistent dataset. However, the availability of such datasets is limited as the datasets often suffer from incompleteness because of missing data corresponding to different input features, which makes the development of robust ML-based predictive models challenging. Besides, as the degree of complexity in these ML models increases, the interpretation of the results becomes challenging. These interpretations of results are critical towards the development of efficient materials design strategies for enhanced materials performance. To address these challenges, this paper implements different data imputation approaches for enhanced …

Neurocognitive consequences of blast-induced traumatic brain injury (bTBI) pose significant concerns for military service members and veterans with the majority of "invisible injury." However, the underlying mechanism of such mild bTBI by low-intensity blast (LIB) exposure for long-term cognitive and mental deficits remains elusive. Our previous studies have shown that mice exposed to LIB result in nanoscale ultrastructural abnormalities in the absence of gross or apparent cellular damage in the brain. Here we tested the hypothesis that glutamatergic hyperexcitability may contribute to long-term learning deficits. Using brain slice electrophysiological recordings, we found an increase in averaged frequencies with a burst …

Computer Science Faculty Research
In this article, a prey–predator system is considered in Caputo-conformable fractional-order derivatives. First, a discretization process, making use of the piecewise-constant approximation, is performed to secure discrete-time versions of the two fractional-order systems. Local dynamic behaviors of the two discretized fractional-order systems are investigated. Numerical simulations are executed to assert the outcome of the current work. Finally, a discussion is conducted to compare the impacts of the Caputo and conformable fractional derivatives on the discretized model.

Increasing Hydrogen Production In Electrolysis With A Magnetic Field, Laurie Battle
Increasing Hydrogen Production In Electrolysis With A Magnetic Field, Laurie Battle
Graduate Theses & Non-Theses
Hydrogen is an important energy carrier that has no carbon emissions when energy is extracted and also can be used as energy storage to increase the practicality of many renewable energy sources. The prominent methods of hydrogen production make use of fossil fuels, resulting in carbon emissions. Electrolysis is a lesser used technology for hydrogen production in which electricity splits water molecules into oxygen and hydrogen gases. If the electricity is sourced from renewable energies, this process releases little to no carbon and the resulting hydrogen is termed “green hydrogen.” While electrolysis and fossil fuel methods have comparable efficiencies of …
