Digital Forensics For Investigating Control-Logic Attacks In Industrial Control Systems, Nauman Zubair
Digital Forensics For Investigating Control-Logic Attacks In Industrial Control Systems, Nauman Zubair
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Programmable logic controllers (PLC) are required to handle physical processes and thus crucial in critical infrastructures like power grids, nuclear facilities, and gas pipelines. Attacks on PLCs can have disastrous consequences, considering attacks like Stuxnet and TRISIS. Those attacks are examples of exploits where the attacker aims to inject into a target PLC malicious control logic, which engineering software compiles as a reliable code. When investigating a security incident, acquiring memory can provide valuable insight such as runtime system activities and memory-based artifacts which may contain the attacker's footprints. The existing memory acquisition tools for PLCs require a hardware-level debugging …
Experimental Tests And Numerical Study Of Trajectories Of Different Types Of Dropped Objects, Yi Li
Experimental Tests And Numerical Study Of Trajectories Of Different Types Of Dropped Objects, Yi Li
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In marine and offshore engineering, dropped objects, such as drill pipes, anchor chains, containers and some small parts, can accidentally fall into the water from ships or offshore platforms, causing casualties on deck or damage to underwater equipment. Damaged equipment can further harm the environment, such as oil spills from damaged wellheads. Therefore, for safe engineering and environmental protection reasons, we need to develop methods and tools that can predict the trajectory of dropped objects.
In this dissertation, we first study containers dropped from ships. More and more containers are falling into the sea due to bad weather. Containers lost …
Denoising And Deconvolving Sperm Whale Data In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico Using Fourier And Wavelet Techniques, Kendal Mccain Leftwich
Denoising And Deconvolving Sperm Whale Data In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico Using Fourier And Wavelet Techniques, Kendal Mccain Leftwich
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The use of underwater acoustics can be an important component in obtaining information from the oceans of the world. It is desirable (but difficult) to compile an acoustic catalog of sounds emitted by various underwater objects to complement optical catalogs. For example, the current visual catalog for whale tail flukes of large marine mammals (whales) can identify even individual whales from their individual fluke characteristics. However, since sperm whales, Physeter microcephalus, do not fluke up when they dive, they cannot be identified in this manner. A corresponding acoustic catalog for sperm whale clicks could be compiled to identify individual …
Artificial Neural Network For Predicting Heat Transfer Rates In Supercritical Carbon Dioxide, Vinusha Dasarla Giri Babu
Artificial Neural Network For Predicting Heat Transfer Rates In Supercritical Carbon Dioxide, Vinusha Dasarla Giri Babu
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Supercritical carbon dioxide as a working fluid in a closed Brayton cycle is proving to be more efficient than a conventional steam-based Rankine engine. Understanding the heat transfer properties of supercritical fluids is important for the design of a working engine cycle. The thermophysical properties of supercritical fluids tend to vary non-linearly near the pseudo-critical region. Traditionally, empirical correlations are used to calculate the heat transfer coefficient. It has been shown in the literature and within our own studies that these correlations provide inaccurate predictions near the pseudo-critical line, where heat transfer may be deteriorated or enhanced, resulting from strong …

Examining The Effects Of Payload Type And Framing On Weather-Related Decision-Making In A Simulated Urban Air Mobility (Uam) Environment, Maria Chaparro Osman
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the current research study was two-fold. First, the study examined the effect of payload type on the riskiness of weather-related decision-making in a simulated urban air mobility (UAM) environment. Second, the current study examined whether framing information using prospect theory (Kahneman & Tversky, 1979) could influence the riskiness of weather-related decision-making in a simulated UAM environment. In the context of the current study, riskiness referred to the risk associated with the decision outcome, specifically whether participants selected a risk-averse decision outcome (return to the departure site) or risk-seeking decision outcome (continue to the destination site) based on …

Mechanical Engineering
The objective of our Gasifier Wall Wash Manifold Project is to design three different manifolds that will uniformly distribute water on the inner diameter of a pressure vessel. Also, the distributed water should completely cover the circumference of the inner walls. From extensive research of current solutions as well as the conduction of technical analyses, we were able to produce three designs that would be able to meet our engineering specifications. Time constraints led to the fabrication of one manifold design along with a test rig. With a fully functional test rig, we saw positive results from our design verification …

ABSTRACT: Recent bridge failures due to hurricane-generated storm surges and riverine flood events have highlighted the vulnerability of bridge infrastructure to extreme hydrodynamic loading. In addition to posing an immediate risk to human life, bridge failures can hinder evacuation planning and emergency response efforts. Changes in flood frequency and intensity due to climate change and urbanization may alter the hydrodynamic conditions along urban streams, further stressing bridge infrastructure designed based on historical flow conditions. As a result, quantifying the structural response and stability of bridges under current and future hydrodynamic conditions is crucial to improving transportation safety and efficiency. This …

Microplastic Risk Characterization Of Plastic Road, Md Shams Razi Shopnil
Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive
In recent past, the act of waste recycling has been diversified in manifolds across the world leading to evolution of newer recycling technique and fresh recycled product. Albeit plastic is one of those waste materials which is getting extremely difficult to get substantially recycled because of its record-breaking production, consumption, and its wide range of variations in properties ultimately leading to substandard recycling status of plastics globally. This seemingly poor status of waste plastics recycling against the gargantuan amount of fresh plastic products being added to consumer stream gives rise to a menacing one directional problem: Plastic Pollution, which is …

Disposal of solid waste becomes a global issue due to it contains a large amount of non- degradable polymers and may lead to many environmental issues. With the scarcity of space for landfilling and due to ever increasing cost, finding ways to handle these wastes without endangering the environment is crucial. One of these methods is to use plastic wastes as one of the pavement materials. In this study, a new method of subgrade soil stabilization of pavement is proposed where soil will be stabilized by mixing only plastic with soil for the treatment of subgrade. In order to demonstrate …

Forming Coalitions And Sharing Payoffs In N-Person Normal Form Games, Emma Owusu Dwobeng
Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering Dissertations - Archive
For a given n-person normal form game, we form all possible sets of mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive coalitions of the n players. For each set of coalitions, we define a coalitional semi-cooperative game as one in which these coalitions are taken as the players of this new game, each coalition tries to maximize the sum of its individual players’ payoffs, and the players within a coalition cooperate to do so. For any coalitional semi-cooperative game, the goal of the original n players is to improve their individual payoffs obtained in a Greedy Scalar Equilibrium (GSE) of the original game, …

Reliability Enhancing Control Algorithms For Two-Stage Grid-Tied Inverters, Yuheng Wu
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In the photovoltaic (PV) generation system, two types of grid-tied inverter systems are usually deployed: the single-stage grid-tied inverter system and the two-stage grid-tied inverter system. In the single-stage grid-tied inverter system, the input of the inverter is directly connected to the PV arrays, while an additional dc-dc stage is inserted between the PV arrays and the dc-ac inverter in the two-stage design. The additional dc-dc stage could provide a stable dc-link voltage to the inverter, which also enables new design possibilities, including the multi-MPPT operation and solar-plus-storage application. Thus, the two-stage grid-tied inverter has been widely used in the …

Towards Orchestration In The Cloud-Fog Continuum, Xavier Jesus Merino Aguilera
Theses and Dissertations
The proliferation of the Internet-of-Things has raised demand for computing, storage, and network resources. The cloud model is ill-equipped to handle the volume and variety of data travelling to and from the cloud’s core as more data is generated and consumed at the network’s edge. Some applications necessitate low-latency connectivity and geographical awareness, highlighting the cloud’s centralization shortcomings. By localizing resources, minimizing bandwidth utilization, and lowering latency, the fog and edge layers are proposed to circumvent these limitations. At these layers, resource orchestration is crucial because poor resource management has an impact on service delivery. The aim of this study …

Sequence-Based Bioinformatics Approaches To Predict Virus–Host Relationships In Archaea And Eukaryotes, Yingshan Li
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Viral metagenomics is independent of lab culturing and capable of investigating viromes of virtually any given environmental niches. While numerous sequences of viral genomes have been assembled from metagenomic studies over the past years, the natural hosts for the majority of these viral contigs have not been determined. Different computational approaches have been developed to predict hosts of bacteria phages. Nevertheless, little progress has been made in the virus-host prediction, especially for viruses that infect eukaryotes and archaea. In this study, by analyzing all documented viruses with known eukaryotic and archaeal hosts, we assessed the predictive power of four computational …

Deep neural networks (DNNs) can perform impressively in many natural language processing (NLP) tasks, but their black-box nature makes them inherently challenging to explain or interpret. Self-Explanatory models are a new approach to overcoming this challenge, generating explanations in human-readable languages besides task objectives like answering questions. The main focus of this thesis is the explainability of NLP tasks, as well as how attention methods can help enhance performance. Three different attention modules are proposed, SimpleAttention, CrossSelfAttention, and CrossModality. It also includes a new dataset transformation method called Two-Documents that converts every dataset into two separate documents required by the …
