Application Of The Continuum Damage Mechanics Wilshire-Cano-Stewart (Wcs) Model, Jaime Aaron Cano May 2022

Application Of The Continuum Damage Mechanics Wilshire-Cano-Stewart (Wcs) Model, Jaime Aaron Cano

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In this study, the applications of the continuum damage mechanics-based Wilshire-Cano-Stewart (WCS) model are explored to predict rupture time, minimum-creep-strain-rate (MCSR), damage, damage evolution, and creep deformation. Increase knowledge in manufacturing methods has pushed the limit of material science and the development of new materials. Conventional testing is required to qualify materials against creep which according to the ASME B&PV III code, 10,000+ hours of experiments are necessary for each heat before materials are put into service. This process is costly and not feasible for new materials. As an alternative, models have been employed to predict creep behaviors and reduce …

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Numerical methods for hyperbolic conservation laws have been a driving force for theresearch in scientific computing and simulation science in the past decades, as many physical, biological, and engineering systems are governed by these equations, such as fluid mechanics, tumor growth, and virtual wind tunnel simulations. Despite the existence of many schemes in the literature, people have never stopped searching for more accurate and efficient methods for these problems. Indeed, the increasing complexity of systems in emerging applications demands better resolution of sub-grid scale phenomenon whereas classical methods usually fail to deliver high-fidelity simulation results of such systems within realistic …

Pressure has been found to induce structural and magnetic phase transitions in many of these materials. Using hydrostatic pressure as a disorderless approach to manipulate the interlayer …

Development Of An Automated Electronic Prototyping System, Cesar Yahir Sanchez Zambrano May 2022

Development Of An Automated Electronic Prototyping System, Cesar Yahir Sanchez Zambrano

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Prototyping systems with interconnected components can be a time and resource expensive process. The process consists of three main phases (design, build and analysis) with each having their own associated cost. For the case of electronic circuits, the building phase is the costliest phase among the three, being prone to human errors which causes the circuit to fail. All three phases of the prototyping process are important. However, often a disproportionate amount of time is spent on the build phase due to the difficulty of making and troubleshooting circuits by hand. In this thesis we will discuss a system that …

Equity Driven Data Analysis For Public Transportation Planning, Gerardo Ivan Valenzuela Mendoza May 2022

Equity Driven Data Analysis For Public Transportation Planning, Gerardo Ivan Valenzuela Mendoza

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Existing public transportation planning methods use a trip-based approach rather than a user-based approach; a user-based approach is sensitive to a broader range of planning strategies and policies, especially those that affect or take into consideration how users spend their time and resources. Even though transportation planning agencies such as Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs) are required to strive for environmental and social justice, there is still a gap that needs to be filled. Urban population growth and urbanization with its impact on public planning require continuous research to address the constantly evolving challenges when it comes to transportation. As cities …

Multicarrier Modulation Using Discrete Fractional Fourier Transform, Amir Raeisi Nafchi Apr 2022

Multicarrier Modulation Using Discrete Fractional Fourier Transform, Amir Raeisi Nafchi

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The focus of the research was to investigate the application of the discrete fractional Fourier transform (DFRFT) in communication systems. We investigated the compactness of the Gauss-Hermite like eigenvectors of the DFRFT and showed how a multi-carrier modulation system could benefit from it. This led to identifying an affine DFRFT. We proved the circular convolution property for the proposed DFRFT. Using this affine transform, we were able to design an orthogonal frequency division multiplexer (OFDM) communication system. In the process of implementing the OFDM, we developed a method for fast computation of the DFRFT using the chirp-z transform. Using the …

Enhancement Of Biogas Production Through Solid-State Anaerobic Co-Digestion Of Food Waste And Corn Cobs, Lukhi Mulia Shitophyta, Anisa Salsabila, Firanita Angraini Putri, Siti Jamilatun

Makara Journal of Technology

Although biogas has been primarily produced through liquid anaerobic digestion, this method leads to the floating and stratification of fibers and non-homogeneous mixing, which can reduce the biogas yield. Alternatively, biogas can be produced by the solid-state anaerobic digestion (SS-AD) of organic material with a high solid content, such as corn cobs. We investigated the co-digestion of food waste and corn cobs as a biomass feedstock for SS-AD in biogas production. We measured the effects of the total solid (TS) content, percentage of food waste, and reduction in volatile solids (VS), from which we determined its appropriate kinetic model. We …

Prediction Of Residual Stresses In L-Pbf Ti-6al-4v Fatigue Specimens Using A Thermo-Mechanical Finite Element Model, Haley Petersen, Brad J. Sampson

ME 4233/6233 Fundamentals of FEA

Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) is an additive manufacturing process that is becoming widely adopted in the automotive, aerospace, and biomedical industries. It uses a laser to melt metal in the form of powder to build parts in a layer-by-layer fashion based on an imported CAD geometry. The constant remelting of previous layers can produce unwanted thermally induced residual stresses in the part due to large thermal gradients, which can drastically reduce the fatigue life of the material. Predicting these residual stresses within the as-built part would be advantageous because one could better understand how the part will perform in …

Structural Health Monitoring: From Virtual Shakers To Machine Learning, Ahsan Kareem Apr 2022

Structural Health Monitoring: From Virtual Shakers To Machine Learning, Ahsan Kareem

Abbett Distinguished Seminar Series

Structural health monitoring (SHM) is a critical means of assessing the performance of aging civil infrastructure. Earlier studies used heavy dynamic shakers to assess the dynamics of structures, which are unwieldy and reliance has been shifted to ambient vibration of structures to extract dynamic features. This study introduces a “virtual shaker” concept that effectively replaces the physical shaker and provides all the desired features for SHM. Examples are provided along with an App that facilitates the use of this concept to identify dynamic features. A traditional structural health monitoring (SHM) operation requires a wired system, which is often termed “hub …

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Identification of genes that show similarity between different organisms, a.k.a orthologous genes, is an open problem in computational biology. The purpose of this thesis is to create an algorithm to group orthologous genes using machine learning. Following an optimization step to find the best characterization based on training data, we represented sequences of genes or proteins with kmer vectors. These kmer vectors were then clustered into orthologous groups using hierarchical clustering. We optimized the clustering phase with the same training data for the method and parameter selection. Our results indicated that use of protein sequences with k=2 and scaling the …

Today, the use of Internet of Things (IoT) devices is higher than ever and it is growing rapidly. Many IoT devices are usually manufactured by home appliance manufacturers where security and privacy are not the foremost concern. When an IoT device is connected to a network, currently there does not exist a strict authentication method that verifies the identity of the device, allowing any rogue IoT device to authenticate to an access point. This thesis addresses the issue by introducing methods for continuous and re-authentication of static and dynamic IoT devices, respectively. We introduce mechanisms and protocols for authenticating a …
