Stochastic Distributed Control For Arbitrarily Connected Microgrid Clusters, Maryam Khanbaghi, Aleksandar Zečević
Electrical and Computer Engineering
Due to the success of single microgrids, the coming years are likely to see a transformation of the current electric power system to a multiple microgrid network. Despite its obvious promise, however, this paradigm still faces many challenges, particularly when it comes to the control and coordination of energy exchanges between subsystems. In view of that, in this paper we propose an optimal stochastic control strategy in which microgrids are modeled as stochastic hybrid dynamic systems. The optimal control is based on the jump linear theory and is used as a means to maximize energy storage and the utilization of …

High-throughput computational screening of materials with targeted thermal conductivity (κ) plays an important role in promoting the advancement of material design and enormous applications. The Slack model has been widely applied for the fast evaluation of κ with minimal time and resources, showing the potential capability of high-throughput screening of κ. However, after examining the Slack model on a large set of 353 materials, a huge discrepancy is found between the predicted κ and the correspondingly measured κ in experiments for some materials in addition to the generally overestimated κ by the Slack model. Thus, it is …

Extensive research is currently being conducted into novel ocular drug delivery systems (ODDS) that are capable of surpassing the limitations associated with conventional intraocular anterior and posterior segment treatments. Nanoformulations, including those synthesised from the natural, hydrophilic glycosaminoglycan, hyaluronic acid (HA), have gained significant traction due to their enhanced intraocular permeation, longer retention times, high physiological stability, inherent biocompatibility, and biodegradability. However, conventional nanoformulation preparation methods often require large volumes of organic solvent, chemical cross-linkers, and surfactants, which can pose significant toxicity risks. We present a comprehensive, critical review of the use of HA in the field of ophthalmology and …

Use Of Power-To-Gas Technology With An Excess Of Electricity In The Network, N A. Abdivakhidova
Technical science and innovation
Electricity-to-gas conversion is a key area of interest for decarbonizing and increasing the flexibility of energy systems, as it can both absorb renewable electricity during periods of excess supply and provide backup energy during periods of excess demand. By combining the power-to-gas conversion with the natural gas network, the inherent flexibility of the line package can be exploited and some of the power variability can be transferred to the gas network. Also, as long as the gas injected into the gas grid is low-carbon, such as hydrogen from renewables to gas, then the overall greenhouse gas emissions from the gas …

An Investigation Of Emerging Technologies To Advance The Understanding Of Dynamics Between The Floodplain And Main Channel Due To Riparian Vegetation, Smriti Chaulagain
An Investigation Of Emerging Technologies To Advance The Understanding Of Dynamics Between The Floodplain And Main Channel Due To Riparian Vegetation, Smriti Chaulagain
Civil Engineering ETDs
Riparian vegetation covers only about 0.4% of the land surface whereas rivers and streams cover about 0.3 to 0.56% but riparian vegetation still provides substantial ecosystem services including many that affect hydrodynamic processes. The ability to estimate the flow resistance caused by vegetation and the consequences for hydrodynamic processes has long been a vexing problem for engineers. Flow resistance is strongly influenced by local hydraulic conditions (water velocity and depth) and vegetation structures, and in turn, vegetation affects mass and momentum exchange processes. However, riparian vegetation conditions change continuously due to external stressors including climate change (e.g., extended drought in …

Fabrication And Characterization Of Carbon Nanotube Metal Matrix Composites For Use In Photovoltaic Gridline Applications, Cayla M. Nelson
Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs
Performance reliability is crucial for photovoltaic (PV) cells in both terrestrial and space-based applications. Electrical efficiency losses over time are heavily impacted by electrical losses due to microcracks within the cell structure and metallization failure. Mechanical stresses and thermal cycling of the device can lead to fracture of the current-carrying metal (Ag) lines on the surface of the device, significantly reducing output power. Incorporating carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into PV metal lines as a reinforcement, forming a CNT/Ag metal matrix composite (MMC), enhances the electrical and mechanical performance of the device. In this work the influence of CNT/Ag MMCs were explored …

Novel stimulation protocols for neuromodulation with magnetic fields are explored in clinical and laboratory settings. Recent evidence suggests that the activation state of the nervous system plays a significant role in the outcome of magnetic stimulation, but the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms of state-dependency have not been completely investigated. We recently reported that high frequency magnetic stimulation could inhibit neural activity when the neuron was in a low active state. In this paper, we investigate state-dependent neural modulation by applying a magnetic field to single neurons, using the novel micro-coil technology. High frequency magnetic stimulation suppressed single neuron activity …
