Basalt Fibers For Underwater Fatigue Repair Of Steel Panels, Guillermo Riveros, Emad M. Hassan, Lauren Hudak, Hussam Mahmoud

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Fatigue damage is a major threat to the safety and integrity of many steel structures. Steel hydraulic structures (SHS), in particular, experience fatigue loading during operation and are exposed to harsh environmental conditions that can further reduce fatigue life through mechanisms. The traditional inspection and repair process for SHS is time-consuming and leads to economic losses. Studies investigating the behavior and advantages of using bonded carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) to repair fatigue cracks in SHS are lacking. The main objectives of this study are to increase the bonding of CFRP, investigate the effectiveness of different fiber-reinforced polymers, and test different …

Recall Distortion In Neural Network Pruning And The Undecayed Pruning Algorithm, Aidan Good, Jiaqi Lin, Hannah Sieg, Mikey Ferguson, Xin Yu, Shandian Zhe, Jerzy Wieczorek, Thiago Serra Nov 2022

Recall Distortion In Neural Network Pruning And The Undecayed Pruning Algorithm, Aidan Good, Jiaqi Lin, Hannah Sieg, Mikey Ferguson, Xin Yu, Shandian Zhe, Jerzy Wieczorek, Thiago Serra

Faculty Conference Papers and Presentations

Pruning techniques have been successfully used in neural networks to trade accuracy for sparsity. However, the impact of network pruning is not uniform: prior work has shown that the recall for underrepresented classes in a dataset may be more negatively affected. In this work, we study such relative distortions in recall by hypothesizing an intensification effect that is inherent to the model. Namely, that pruning makes recall relatively worse for a class with recall below accuracy and, conversely, that it makes recall relatively better for a class with recall above accuracy. In addition, we propose a new pruning algorithm aimed …

The Impact Of Biofilms And Dissolved Organic Matter On The Transport Of Nanoparticles In Field-Scale Streams, Junyeol Kim, Kevin R. Roche, Diogo Bolster, Kyle Doudrick

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The fate and transport of nanoparticles (NPs) in streams is critical for understanding their overall environmental impact. Using a unique field-scale stream at the Notre Dame-Linked Experimental Ecosystem Facility, we investigated the impact of biofilms and the presence of dissolved organic matter (DOM) on the transport of titanium dioxide (TiO2) NPs. Experimental breakthrough curves were analyzed using temporal moments and fit using a mobile-immobile model. The presence of biofilms in the stream severely reduced the transport of the TiO2 NPs, but this was mitigated by the presence of DOM. Under minimal biofilm conditions, the presence of DOM …

Blockchain (BC), as an emerging technology, is revolutionizing Business Process Management (BPM) in multiple ways. The main adoption is to serve as a trusted infrastructure to guarantee the trust of collaborations among multiple partners in trustless environments. Especially, BC enables trust of information by using Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT). With the power of smart contracts, BC enforces the obligations of counterparties that transact in a business process (BP) by programming the contracts as transactions. This paper aims to study the state-of-the-art of BC technologies by (1) exploring its applications in BPM with the focus on how BC provides the trust …

Tidally Generated Internal Waves From Dual-Ridge Topography, Ian Derik Sanderson Nov 2022

Tidally Generated Internal Waves From Dual-Ridge Topography, Ian Derik Sanderson

Theses and Dissertations

Internal waves are generated in stratified fluids, like the ocean, where density increases with depth. Tides are one of the major generation mechanisms of internal waves. As the tides move water back and forth over underwater topography, internal waves can be generated. Topography slope and amplitude are major factors in the behavior of the generated internal wave field. In order to further understand the effects topographic shape plays, the effect of asymmetry on internal waves is investigated. This research investigates internal waves generated by dual-ridge topographies. Four cases of symmetric topographies, T, M, W, and W2, with three different peak …

Using Strategic Options Development And Analysis (Soda) To Understand The Simulation Accessibility Problem, Andrew J. Collins, Ying Thaviphoke, Antuela A. Tako

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

Simulation modelling is applied to a wide range of problems, including defense and healthcare. However, there is a concern within the simulation community that there is a limited use and implementation of simulation studies in practice. This suggests that despite its benefits, simulation may not be reaching its potential in making a real-world impact. The main reason for this could be that simulation tools are not widely accessible in industry. In this paper, we investigate the issues that affect simulation modelling accessibility through a workshop with simulation practitioners. We use Strategic Options Development and Analysis (SODA), a problem-structuring approach that …

Machine Learning For Angiography-Based Blood Flow Velocity Prediction, Swati Padhee, Mark Johnson, Hang Yi, Tanvi Banerjee, Zifeng Yang

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is widely employed to predict hemodynamic characteristics in arterial models, while not friendly to clinical applications due to the complexity of numerical simulations. Alternatively, this work proposed a framework to estimate hemodynamics in vessels based on angiography images using machine learning (ML) algorithms. First, the iodine contrast perfusion in blood was mimicked by a flow of dye diffusing into water in the experimentally validated CFD modeling. The generated projective images from simulations imitated the counterpart of light passing through the flow field as an analogy of X-ray imaging. Thus, the CFD simulation provides both the ground …

Cyclic Porewater Pressure Generation In Intact Silty Soils, Arash Khosravifar, Stephen Dickenson, Diane Moug

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The results of cyclic strain-controlled, constant volume direct simple shear (CDSS) tests and field shaking tests have been evaluated for intact, natural, low-plastic silts from six different fine-grained soils with 54%–100% fines content, 47%–83% silt content, and plasticity indices (PI) ranging from nonplastic to 16. These tests constitute a subset of a larger archive of CDSS tests performed on silt deposits from the Pacific Northwest, British Columbia, and Alaska collected and analyzed by the co-authors. The cyclic data are presented in this paper for two objectives: (a) to characterize cyclically-induced excess pore pressure generation in intermediate soils with various soil …

Pile-Supported Wharves Subjected To Inertial Loads And Lateral Ground Deformations. Ii: Guidelines For Equivalent Static Analysis, Milad Souri, Arash Khosravifar, Stephen E. Dickenson, Scott Schlechter, Nason Mccullough

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

An equivalent static analysis (ESA) procedure is proposed for the design of pile-supported wharves subjected to combined inertial and kinematic loads during earthquakes. The accuracy of the ESA procedure was evaluated against measurements from five large-scale centrifuge tests. The wharf structures in these tests were subjected to a suite of recorded ground motions and the associated superstructure inertia, as well as earthquake-induced slope deformations of varying magnitudes. It is shown that large bending moments at depths greater than 10 pile diameters were primarily induced by kinematic demands and can be estimated by applying soil displacements only (i.e., 100% kinematic). In …

Pile-Supported Wharves Subjected To Inertial Loads And Lateral Ground Deformations. I: Experimental Results From Centrifuge Tests, Milad Souri, Arash Khosravifar, Stephen E. Dickenson, Scott Schlechter, Nason Mccullough

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Five dynamic, large-scale centrifuge tests on pile-supported wharves were used to investigate the time- and depth-dependent nature of kinematic and inertial demands on the deep foundations during earthquake loading. The wharf structures in the physical experiments were subjected to a suite of recorded ground motions and imposed superstructure inertial demands on the piles. Partial to full liquefaction in loose sand resulted in slope deformations of varying magnitudes that imposed kinematic demands on the piles. It was found that the wharf inertia and soil displacements were always in phase during the critical cycle when bending moments were at their maximum values. …

Hydrogen (H2) is a clean fuel and key enabler of energy transition into green renewable sources and a method of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Underground H2 storage (UHS) is a prominent method offering a permanent solution for a low-carbon economy to meet the global energy demand. However, UHS is a complex procedure where containment security, pore-scale scattering, and large-scale storage capacity can be influenced by H2 contamination due to mixing with cushion gases and reservoir fluids. The literature lacks comprehensive investigations of existing thermodynamic models in calculating the accurate transport properties of H2-blend …

A Quality Metric For K-Means Clustering Based On Centroid Locations, Manoj Thulasidas Nov 2022

A Quality Metric For K-Means Clustering Based On Centroid Locations, Manoj Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

K-Means clustering algorithm does not offer a clear methodology to determine the appropriate number of clusters; it does not have a built-in mechanism for K selection. In this paper, we present a new metric for clustering quality and describe its use for K selection. The proposed metric, based on the locations of the centroids, as well as the desired properties of the clusters, is developed in two stages. In the initial stage, we take into account the full covariance matrix of the clustering variables, thereby making it mathematically similar to a reduced chi2. We then extend it to account for …

Neural Network Based Reactive Control Of Point Absorber Wave Energy Converters, Abdelmoamen Ali Nasser

Theses

The main objective of this work is to develop a neural-network-based Reactive Control (RC) system for wave energy converters. The ability to maximize the power output of WEC while maintaining operation constraints, which can be physical or thermal, is crucial to the development of deployable control strategies. Having a control method that is robust, which means it handles uncertainty and noise very well, is one of the main performance criteria in evaluating the method. Therefore, this work starts by deriving an averaged WEC model to be simulated in MATLAB/Simulink. Additionally, the concepts of resistive loading control and reactive control (approximate …

Sludge-Based Activated Carbon: Characterization And Performance For Removal Of Methylene Blue From Aqueous Solution, Ahmad Anwar Al Madhoon Nov 2022

Sludge-Based Activated Carbon: Characterization And Performance For Removal Of Methylene Blue From Aqueous Solution, Ahmad Anwar Al Madhoon

Theses

Domestic wastewater treatment plants in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) produce 122 thousand tons of dried sludge annually. About 70% of this sludge is dumped in landfills, creating water and soil contamination. Sludge is an energy-rich organic material that could be converted into activated carbon by thermal or chemical processes. Potassium hydroxide has shown great potential as an activating agent for producing high-quality sludge based activated carbon (SBAC). However, its use adds to the cost of the production process. Thus, there is a need for an alternative activating agent that is not costly. One possible chemical is carbide lime which …

Disturbance-Observer Based Control For Pwm Rectifiers Without Dc Voltage Oscillations Under Unbalanced Grid Conditions, Mohammed Samer Al-Razehi Nov 2022

Disturbance-Observer Based Control For Pwm Rectifiers Without Dc Voltage Oscillations Under Unbalanced Grid Conditions, Mohammed Samer Al-Razehi

Theses

A three-phase controlled rectifier is a power electronic converter that employs the grid voltages as an input to produce a constant dc voltage at its output through the use of a capacitor, known as dc-link capacitor. However, the switching devices of power converters can create harmonics in the grid current, which mandates the need for filters to ensure high-quality grid current. This explains why the power converter is normally connected to the grid using passive filters such as L filter or LCL filter. The L filter is normally preferred over LCL filter to reduce harmonic distortions in grid currents as …

Development Of Non-Proprietary Ultra-High Performance Concrete Mixtures, Tawsif Mohammad Hasan, Levi Gilbert, Srinivas Allena, Josiah Owusu-Danquah, Anthony Torres

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

The development of non-proprietary Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) is one way to reduce the initial cost of construction. However, workability is a major issue for which such mixtures are not practical in field conditions. Ultra-high performance cannot be achieved in field conditions if the concrete is not placed, finished, and compacted properly during placement. In this research, six UHPC mixtures were developed (three with steel fibers and three without fibers) using materials which are readily available on the local marketplace with water-to-cementitious materials ratios ranging between 0.17 to 0.30. The workability was determined using standard ASTM flow table apparatus, and …
