Investigating The Effect Of Electrolyte Concentration And Charging Protocol On Materials Utilization In Rechargeable Zinc Manganese Dioxide Batteries, Snehal H. Kolhekar Jan 2021

Investigating The Effect Of Electrolyte Concentration And Charging Protocol On Materials Utilization In Rechargeable Zinc Manganese Dioxide Batteries, Snehal H. Kolhekar

Dissertations and Theses

Achieving a highly cyclable, high energy density battery with MnO2 cathodes encounters many obstacles. Chief among these is the inability of the widely-used γ-MnO2 polymorph to retain its structural integrity when cycled to near full one-electron discharge capacity, which is about 280mAh/g for commercially available electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD). In this one-electron range, discharge occurs by proton insertion producing Mn+3 which then reverts to γ-MnO2 on charging. In the first part of the thesis, we investigate the root cause of failure of MnO2 cathodes under deep cycling in the one-electron discharge range and establish a …

Voltage Security Optimization For Power Transmission Systems, Tamer Ibrahim Jan 2021

Voltage Security Optimization For Power Transmission Systems, Tamer Ibrahim

Dissertations and Theses

This project proposes an optimization approach for day-ahead reactive power planning to ensure voltage security in transmission networks. The problem is formulated as a voltage-secure multi-period optimal reactive power dispatch (MP-ORPD) problem. The optimization approach searches for optimal set-points of dynamic and static reactive power (var) resources. Specifically, the output includes set-points for switching shunts, transformer taps, and voltage magnitudes at the regulated buses. The primary goal is to maximize the dynamic reactive power reserve of the system, by minimizing the reactive power supplied by synchronous generators. The secondary goal is to minimize changes in the settings of switching shunts …

The Diffuse Bounce Back Lattice Boltzmann Method And Its Applications On The Study Of Fluid-Particle Interactions, Geng Liu

Dissertations and Theses

Fluid-structure interaction is very broadly seen and widely used in many industrial, engineering and environmental processes. The lattice Boltzmann method has been preferred for simulating particulate flows due to its advantages of easy implementation, micro- and mesoscopic physical insights and parallel algorithm. Both sharp and diffuse boundary treatments are studied to recover curved and moving boundaries on structured orthogonal grids for the lattice Boltzmann method. These methods can describe curved boundaries more accurately and more smoothly than the naive staircase approximation. However, to improve the order of velocity accuracy and to reduce the fluctuation of force, either interpolation or additional …

Reclamation Of Fused Silica From Investment Shells Used For Casting Steel, Samuel L. Holt Jan 2021

Reclamation Of Fused Silica From Investment Shells Used For Casting Steel, Samuel L. Holt

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Fused silica is widely used for investment casting shell molds. Fused silica shells are discarded after being used for casting one time. This is due to the transformation of fused silica to beta cristobalite above 1652℉ (900℃). To reduce cost and waste of investment casting foundries, this study is exploring a method to inhibit transformation of fused silica and reclaim it from high temperature investment casting shells. This research has employed firing to minimalize fused silica transformation to cristobalite. The phase transformation is minimalized due to sintering and coarsening of the particles during firing. Coarsening reduces surface area to volume …

Current Status Of Design And Construction Of Piles With A Pilot Hole On Rock, Charles C. Crowner Jan 2021

Current Status Of Design And Construction Of Piles With A Pilot Hole On Rock, Charles C. Crowner

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Driven piles at project sites get their load bearing capacity from side friction along the driven lengths as well as from end resistance. Pilot holes is a pile driving assistance method used to aid driving displacement piles through hard/ dense layers and rock. These pilot holes can be a size smaller or larger than the pile that is to be installed. The pilot hole is first drilled down to a specific depth. The use of a pilot hole reduces the “end bearing” and “side resistance” within the drilled zone and aids the driving of the pile. This process also complicates …

Seismic Soil-Structure Interaction Effects In Tall Buildings Considering Nonlinear-Inelastic Behaviors, Jaime Mercado Jan 2021

Seismic Soil-Structure Interaction Effects In Tall Buildings Considering Nonlinear-Inelastic Behaviors, Jaime Mercado

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Soil-structure interaction (SSI) effects are relevant for the seismic analysis of tall buildings on shallow foundations since the dynamic behavior of structures is highly affected by the interaction between the superstructure and supporting soils. As part of earthquake-resistant designs of buildings, considering SSI effects in the analysis provides more realistic estimates of its performance during a seismic event, particularly when both the structure and soil undergo large demands that can compromise serviceability. Oversimplifications of structural or soil modeling in the analysis introduces variability and biases in the computed seismic response. The main goal of this dissertation is to investigate the …

Solidification Cracking In Binary Al-Cu Alloys Additively Manufactured Through Laser Powder Bed Fusion, Keegan Muller Jan 2021

Solidification Cracking In Binary Al-Cu Alloys Additively Manufactured Through Laser Powder Bed Fusion, Keegan Muller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) is an additive manufacturing technique with growing relevance in industry. However, alloys with a high susceptibility to micro-cracking during solidification cannot be feasibly manufactured through LPBF, such as in selected high-strength Al-alloys. The cracking susceptibility (CS) of Al-alloys varies with composition, so modeling CS with respect to composition is crucial in designing compatible alloys for LPBF. In a theoretical modeling of solidification cracking based on the Scheil equation, the relative CS is taken as the maximum value of |dT/d(fs^1/2)| when solidification is near completion. However, experimental observations of the crack density in Al-alloys suggest that …

Electroosmotic Flow Of Viscoelastic Fluid Through A Constriction Microchannel, Jianyu Ji, Shizhi Qian, Zhaohui Liu

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Electroosmotic flow (EOF) has been widely used in various biochemical microfluidic applications, many of which use viscoelastic non-Newtonian fluid. This study numerically investigates the EOF of viscoelastic fluid through a 10:1 constriction microfluidic channel connecting two reservoirs on either side. The flow is modelled by the Oldroyd-B (OB) model coupled with the Poisson–Boltzmann model. EOF of polyacrylamide (PAA) solution is studied as a function of the PAA concentration and the applied electric field. In contrast to steady EOF of Newtonian fluid, the EOF of PAA solution becomes unstable when the applied electric field (PAA concentration) exceeds a critical value for …

(Quinolin-8-Yl) Tin Synthons In Transmetalation Reactions With Transition Metals Yield Multimetallic Organometallic Molecules And Clusters, Arjun Chandra Bhowmick

Dissertations and Theses

Transition metal (Hg, Ag, Pd, Ni, Sn, Cu) complexes and clusters form from the reaction of metal salts and QSnX (Q = quinolin-8-yl; X = Q or Cl) synthons. Our original intent was the use of Q2Hg, Q2Sn, or QSnCl as an ambiphilic ligand; however, we observed an apparent redox-trans metalation reaction in most of the cases. Bimetallic Hg-Ag complexes were prepared using Q2Hg as an ambiphilic ligand. Heterobimetallic (Ni-Sn and Pd-Sn) complexes were obtained from the reaction of NiCl2 (or PdCl2) with in situ generated QSnCl. Geometry and electronic configuration of the complexes were investigated using DFT methods. The …
