Development Of Triangular And Tetrahedral Finite Elements For Solutions To Thermoelastic Instabilities Using Hotspotter, Cortney Samuel Leneave Jan 2021

Development Of Triangular And Tetrahedral Finite Elements For Solutions To Thermoelastic Instabilities Using Hotspotter, Cortney Samuel Leneave

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objective of the work presented in this thesis is to develop first-order triangular and tetrahedral elements for solutions to Thermoelastic Instabilities (TEI) regarding sliding friction systems in Hotspotter.

Hotspotter software uses a finite element method and an eigenvalue method and is an important tool because currently no other commercial software exists which solves the TEI problem for critical velocities and wave numbers of a system. Hotspotter currently uses quadrilateral and hexahedral elements for two and three dimensional analysis, respectively. Typically, tri and tet elements are used in industry when doing static and dynamic stress analysis. Therefore, the Hotspotter user …

Dislocation Mechanics Of Total Hip Arthroplasty: A Combined Experimental And Computational Analysis, Michael Scinto Jan 2021

Dislocation Mechanics Of Total Hip Arthroplasty: A Combined Experimental And Computational Analysis, Michael Scinto

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

While total hip arthroplasty is considered a successful procedure, dislocation remains a serious complication as recurrent dislocations may require additional surgeries. Knowledge on dislocation events as they occur in vivo are limited, therefore researchers rely on experimental and computational methods. A custom MATLAB script and an experimental procedure utilizing a six-degree of freedom actuator were developed to further understand how various surgical considerations affect dislocation mechanics in total hip arthroplasty. Computationally, it was determined that impingement free range of motion is limited during internal rotation in flexion and during external rotation in extension. Experimentally, our results suggest that the posterior …

Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

Generative adversarial network (GAN) applications on medical image synthesis have the potential to assist caregivers in deciding a proper chronic wound treatment plan by understanding the border segmentation and the wound tissue classification visually. This study proposes a hybrid wound border segmentation and tissue classification method utilising conditional GAN, which can mimic real data without expert knowledge. We trained the network on chronic wound datasets with different sizes. The performance of the GAN algorithm is evaluated through the mean squared error, Dice coefficient metrics and visual inspection of generated images. This study also analyses the optimum number of training images …

Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been among the most emerging research and industrial application fields, especially in the healthcare domain, but operated as a black-box model with a limited understanding of its inner working over the past decades. AI algorithms are, in large part, built on weights calculated as a result of large matrix multiplications. It is typically hard to interpret and debug the computationally intensive processes. Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) aims to solve black-box and hard-to-debug approaches through the use of various techniques and tools. In this study, XAI techniques are applied to chronic wound classification. The proposed model classifies …

Pedagogical Methods And Advances For Synchronous/Asynchronous Instruction Of Laboratories In Engineering Technology Programs, Nestor Escobales, Alok Verma

Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

Significant research has been done on the subject of distance learning (DL) instruction for many academic disciplines. However, when it comes to engineering technology (ET) programs, particularly, engineering laboratory work, limited studies are available. It is unquestionable that engineering laboratory work is essential for the successful preparation of individuals enrolled in ET programs. The focus of ET programs is on the correct use and application of engineering principles with a direct focus on practical application rather than on theory alone. The difficulties increase significantly when laboratories are offered in DL mode, particularly for ET programs. It is well known that …

Engineering Technology Programs Outreach To K-12, Alok Verma

Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

The Engineering Technology (ET) degree emphasizes hands-on application and implementation. Graduates holding this degree play a valuable role in economically growing the US and keeping it internationally competitive. However, “engineering and engineering technology, are widely misunderstood… the public sector (employers, students, high-school counselors, politicians and the general public) needs to be educated as to the particular value of each,” according to Engineering.com [1]. The National Academy of Engineering states, “Unlike the much better-known field of engineering, engineering technology is unfamiliar to most Americans and goes unmentioned in most policy discussions about the US technical workforce. This is even though workers …

Biocybersecurity: A Converging Threat As An Auxiliary To War, Lucas Potter, Orlando Ayala, Xavier-Lewis Palmer

Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

Biodefense is the discipline of ensuring biosecurity with respect to select groups of organisms and limiting their spread. This field has increasingly been challenged by novel threats from nature that have been weaponized such as SARS, Anthrax, and similar pathogens, but has emerged victorious through collaboration of national and world health groups. However, it may come under additional stress in the 21st century as the field intersects with the cyberworld-- a world where governments have already been struggling to keep up with cyber attacks from small to state-level actors as cyberthreats have been relied on to level the playing field …

Osteocyte Activity And Skeletal Muscle Relative Gene Expression Profiling After Short-Term Muscle Paralysis, Michelle Gelbs Jan 2021

Osteocyte Activity And Skeletal Muscle Relative Gene Expression Profiling After Short-Term Muscle Paralysis, Michelle Gelbs

Dissertations and Theses

Mechanical loading is essential for maintaining bone tissue. Reduced mechanical loading has been shown to have a negative effect on bone, and can result in the development of disuse osteoporosis. Disuse models of muscle inactivity and immobilization, like the Botox model used in this study, result in changes in the bone microarchitecture, the mechanisms behind which are not fully understood. In a previous four-week Botox disuse study, skeletally mature 20- week-old rats experienced degradation of intracortical bone, increased vascular porosity, and decreased osteocyte lacunar density in the tibiae. The focus of this study was to explicate a potential source of …

On The Improvements Of Boundary-Layer Representation For High Resolution Weather Forecasting In Costal-Urban Environments, David Melecio-Vazquez

Dissertations and Theses

As large urban centers around the world become more densely populated, the global conversion from natural to man-made land surfaces will only increase. These land-use changes affect the urban surface energy budget which in turn changes the structure of the planetary boundary layer (PBL) above. With current high-performance computing systems, meteorological and built environment information can be better utilized to quantify the anthropogenic effects of these modifications. Although these systems have improved forecasting near-surface weather conditions, a comprehensive approach to represent urban impacts on the PBL is still limited. Improved PBL representation can lead to better weather and climate forecasts, …

Development Of An Injectable Methylcellulose Hydrogel System For Nucleus Pulposus Repair And Regeneration, Nada A. Haq-Siddiqi

Dissertations and Theses

Low back pain is the most common cause of disability in the world and is often caused by degeneration or injury of the intervertebral disc (IVD). The IVD is a complex, fibrocartilaginous tissue that allows for the wide range of spinal mobility. Disc degeneration is a progressive condition believed to begin in the central, gelatinous nucleus pulposus (NP) region of the tissue, for which there are few preventative therapies. Current therapeutic strategies include pain management and exercise, or surgical intervention such as spinal fusion, none of which address the underlying cause of degeneration. With an increasingly aging population, the socioeconomic …

Development Of Light Actuated Chemical Delivery Platform On A 2-D Array Of Micropore Structure, Hojjat Rostami Azmand, Hojjat Rostami Azmand

Dissertations and Theses

Localized chemical delivery plays an essential role in the fundamental information transfers within biological systems. Thus, the ability to mimic the natural chemical signal modulation would provide significant contributions to understand the functional signaling pathway of biological cells and develop new prosthetic devices for neurological disorders. In this paper, we demonstrate a light-controlled hydrogel platform that can be used for localized chemical delivery in a high spatial resolution. By utilizing the photothermal behavior of graphene-hydrogel composites confined within micron-sized fluidic channels, patterned light illumination creates the parallel and independent actuation of chemical release in a group of fluidic ports. The …

Alternate Load Paths And Retrofits For Long-Span Truss Bridges Under Sudden Member Loss And Blast Loads, Huihui Li Jan 2021

Alternate Load Paths And Retrofits For Long-Span Truss Bridges Under Sudden Member Loss And Blast Loads, Huihui Li

Dissertations and Theses

In current bridge design practices, due to the existence of alternate load paths (ALPs), continued stability and progressive collapse-resistance of long-span bridges following the initialed loss of a critical member can be attributed to “redundancy”. However, “redundancy”, also indicated as the post member failure behavior of long-span bridges is not well understood and is not explicitly considered, especially for long-span truss bridges. As one of the most famous collapse events that took place recently, collapse of the I-35W truss bridge has demonstrated the vulnerabilities of long-span truss bridges, and their societal and economic consequences under the abnormal events, such as …

Adsorption Kinetics And Phase Behavior Of Particles Adsorbed At An Interface, Shaghayegh Darjani Jan 2021

Adsorption Kinetics And Phase Behavior Of Particles Adsorbed At An Interface, Shaghayegh Darjani

Dissertations and Theses

The ability to predict the adsorption dynamic, phase behavior, and surface pressure of a monolayer of adsorbed particles in two-dimensional systems are key aspects of many current research areas. Examples include phase transitions in amphiphilic monolayers, emulsion stability due to particle adsorption at interfaces, and melting at an interface.

In this thesis, a new approach for deriving the equation of state for a two-dimensional lattice gas is proposed, based on arguments similar to those used in the derivation of the Langmuir-Szyszkowski equation of state for localized adsorption. This work aims to predict the adsorption kinetics and phase behavior of a …

Restoration Of Bone Material And Microstructural Properties After Long-Term Remodeling Suppression, Abigail A. Coffman Jan 2021

Restoration Of Bone Material And Microstructural Properties After Long-Term Remodeling Suppression, Abigail A. Coffman

Dissertations and Theses

Anti-resorptive drugs, principally bisphosphonates (BPs), are the mainstay of osteoporosis treatment. They work by inhibiting bone resorption/remodeling, thus preventing bone loss. However, long-term suppression of bone resorption adversely affects bone tissue mechanical properties, even while conserving bone mass. Lack of remodeling leads to accumulation of fatigue-induced microdamage, altered matrix mineralization and reduction in normal bone tissue heterogeneity, causing impaired strength and fracture toughness. The most severe consequence to patients, while rare, is Atypical Femur Fractures (i.e., complete fatigue fractures of the femoral shaft). To counteract the effects of long-term remodeling suppression, a temporary break in BP treatment (a "drug holiday) …

A New Mathematical Theory For The Dynamics Of Large Tumor Populations, A Potential Mechanism For Cancer Dormancy & Recurrence And Experimental Observation Of Melanoma Progression In Zebrafish, Adeyinka A. Lesi Jan 2021

A New Mathematical Theory For The Dynamics Of Large Tumor Populations, A Potential Mechanism For Cancer Dormancy & Recurrence And Experimental Observation Of Melanoma Progression In Zebrafish, Adeyinka A. Lesi

Dissertations and Theses

Cancer, a family of over a hundred disease varieties, results in 600,000 deaths in the U.S. alone. Yet, improvements in imaging technology to detect disease earlier, pharmaceutical developments to shrink or eliminate tumors, and modeling of biological interactions to guide treatment have prevented millions of deaths. Cancer patients with initially similar disease can experience vastly different outcomes, including sustained recovery, refractory disease or, remarkably, recurrence years after apparently successful treatment. The current understanding of such recurrences is that they depend on the random occurrence of critical mutations. Clearly, these biological changes appear to be sufficient for recurrence, but are they …

Dynamics Of Simultaneous Nitrite Ion And Ammonia Chlorination In Complex Water Quality Matrices And Their Impact On Chlorine Residual Speciation During Disinfection, Shirin Estahbanati

Dissertations and Theses

Although chlorination of ammonia and nitrite ions have been studied comprehensively, the kinetics of chlorination in water matrices containing ammonia in the presence of nitrite ion have not been fully understood. The coexistence of the two nitrogen compounds is a phenomenon most often encountered during biological nitrification of municipal wastewaters. The spatial variation of the nitrogen species generates unpredictable complications in the effectiveness of chlorination as the disinfection process. The focus of the research study was the examination of chlorine residual speciation and the fate of ionic nitrogen species, i.e. nitrite and nitrate ions, under various experimental conditions. The experimental …

Blockchain-Based Architecture For Secured Cyberattack Signatures And Features Distribution, Oluwaseyi J. Ajayi Jan 2021

Blockchain-Based Architecture For Secured Cyberattack Signatures And Features Distribution, Oluwaseyi J. Ajayi

Dissertations and Theses

One effective way of detecting malicious traffic in computer networks is intrusion detection systems (IDS). Despite the increased accuracy of IDSs, distributed or coordinated attacks can still go undetected because of the single vantage point of the IDSs. Due to this reason, there is a need for attack characteristics' exchange among different IDS nodes. Another reason for IDS coordination is that a zero-day attack (an attack without a known signature) experienced in organizations located in different regions is not the same. Collaborative efforts of the participating IDS nodes can stop more attack threats if IDS nodes exchange these attack characteristics …

Molecular To Macroscopic Understanding Of Chloroaluminate Anion Intercalation In Rechargeable Aluminum-Graphite Batteries, Jeffrey Xu Jan 2021

Molecular To Macroscopic Understanding Of Chloroaluminate Anion Intercalation In Rechargeable Aluminum-Graphite Batteries, Jeffrey Xu

Dissertations and Theses

Today’s global energy challenges pose an urgent need to electrify transportation and better store intermittent renewable energy sources (e.g., solar and wind energy). For such large-scale battery applications, aluminum batteries are a promising “beyond lithium-ion” technology due to the high volumetric capacity, earth abundance, low-cost, and inherent safety of aluminum metal. However, there are very few compatible positive electrode materials that exhibit high energy density and cycling stability, in part due to the challenges of electrochemically intercalating highly charged Al3+ cations. Recently, graphite has been demonstrated as a promising positive electrode material in non-aqueous rechargeable aluminum batteries, which store …

Structural Robustness Of Long-Span Cable-Supported Bridges, Qian Chen Jan 2021

Structural Robustness Of Long-Span Cable-Supported Bridges, Qian Chen

Dissertations and Theses

As a critical part of the current infrastructure system, long-span bridges are directly exposed to adverse environments, such as floods, scours, hurricanes, etc., and dynamic loads such as earthquakes and vehicular impacts. Additionally, recent long-span cable-supported collapse examples show that many bridges suffered progressive collapse when local damage occurred, and they are highly vulnerable to severe damages in the event of a localized failure. However, the traditional design approaches are unable to provide explicit measures of residual safety of bridges, especially after an abnormal event. Currently available redundancy and robustness evaluation approaches, which were developed mainly for short-span bridges, are …

When The Brain Plays A Game: Neural Responses To Visual Dynamics During Naturalistic Visual Tasks, Jason Ki Jan 2021

When The Brain Plays A Game: Neural Responses To Visual Dynamics During Naturalistic Visual Tasks, Jason Ki

Dissertations and Theses

Many day-to-day tasks involve processing of complex visual information in a continuous stream. While much of our knowledge on visual processing has been established from reductionist approaches in lab-controlled settings, very little is known about the processing of complex dynamic stimuli experienced in everyday scenarios. Traditional investigations employ event-related paradigms that involve presentation of simple stimuli at select locations in visual space and discrete moments in time. In contrast, visual stimuli in real-life are highly dynamic, spatially-heterogeneous, and semantically rich. Moreover, traditional experiments impose unnatural task constraints (e.g., inhibited saccades), thus, it is unclear whether theories developed under the reductionist …

Molecular-Level Understanding Of Ionic & Electronic Charge Storage Mechanisms In Rechargeable Aluminum Batteries Using Sold-State Nmr, Ankur Lahanu Jadhav Jan 2021

Molecular-Level Understanding Of Ionic & Electronic Charge Storage Mechanisms In Rechargeable Aluminum Batteries Using Sold-State Nmr, Ankur Lahanu Jadhav

Dissertations and Theses

Rechargeable aluminum-ion batteries are safe and low-cost alternatives to traditional lithium-ion batteries due to the high volumetric capacity (8040 mAh/cm3) of aluminum. However, very few electrode materials have shown reversible aluminum ion intercalation. Intercalation Al3+ ions in these structures leads to poor capacity retention, mainly due to slow solid-state diffusion of the highly charged tri-valent aluminum ions within these crystalline structures. In 2015, aluminum ions were shown to reversibly intercalate/de-intercalate into the Chevrel Mo6S8 phase, though the intercalation mechanism is not well understood. Alternatively, molecular chloroaluminate ions within the ionic liquid electrolyte have also …

Control Hierarchies For Critical Infrastructures In Smart Grid Using Reinforcement Learning And Metaheuristic Optimization, Oindrilla Dutta

Dissertations and Theses

The objective of this work is to develop robust control framework for interdependent smart grid infrastructures comprising two critical infrastructures: 1) power distribution networks that are characterized by high penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs), and 2) DC-rail transportation systems in congested urban areas. The rising integration of DERs into the power grid is causing a paradigm shift in the power distribution network. Consequently, new control challenges for efficient and robust operation of the power grid have surfaced. For instance, the intermittency of renewable energy resources necessitates coordinated control of power flows, voltage regulators, and protection device settings of the …
