Fpga-Based Scalable Road Image Stochastic Denosing Approach, Cheolhyeong Park, Kyung Ki Kim, Yong Bin Kim, Minsu Choi
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This work proposes FPGA-based stochastic computing for efficient and scalable road image stochastic denoising. Stochastic number generators were compared for fields requiring data reliability such as automotive vehicles. The denoising performance of PRNG (Pseudo-Random Number Generator) and LDSG (Low Discrepancy Sequence Generator) are showed in noised KETTI dataset with filtering algorithms. The proposed approach is expected to be easily applied to SoCs with embedded FPGA for lightweight embedded implementation of image denoising algorithms.

Celestite Upgrading By Jigs In Presence Of Steel Balls As Ragging Material, Ahmed Sobhy, Ayman A. El-Midany, Suzan S. Ibrahim
Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Gravity separation using jigs is widely used for coarse particle sizes separation. However, fine sizes reduce jig performance. In this study, the upgrading of celestite ore by jig was investigated at different size fractions in the presence of ragging material. Three size fractions, i.e., -15+2 mm, - 2.0 + 0.50 mm and - 0.50 + 0.08 mm were used. The steel balls were used, as ragging material, to improve the separation of fines as well as to improve the concentrate quality. The statistical design was used to correlate celestite grade and recovery with studied operating variables, i.e., the ragging number …

A Time-Domain Computing-In-Memory Micro Using Ring Oscillator, Yixuan He, Minsu Choi, Kyung Ki Kim, Yong Bin Kim
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper proposes a novel time-domain computing-in-memory core that implements XNOR-And-Accumulate (XAC) of XNOR network in 8T SRAM cell. This new technique uses an inverter-based ring oscillator to generate periodic waves whose period represents the accumulation result of the input XNOR values. The circuit is built and simulated using PTM16_HP 16nm CMOS model with a 0.7V power supply. The results show correct functionality, a large signal margin and 463 TOPS/W efficiency. With further exploration, the time-domain computation could be a new candidate for in-memory computing since it has its own superiorities in comparison to mixed-signal or digital methods.

In this paper, an accurate high-frequency modeling methodology for a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) in a vehicular electrical braking system is presented, which is suitable for analyzing various electromagnetic interference problems caused by a motor drive system. The proposed modeling approach is established according to the vector fitting technique and based on the S-parameter measurements of the PMSM. The equivalent circuit model of the PMSM converted from a measured S-parameter matrix can better describe the impedance characteristics of the three-phase PMSM under study compared to the existing equivalent circuit models because the imbalances inside the motor are taken into …

Partial Arc Sampling Receiving Scheme For Demultiplexing Of Orbital Angular Momentum Vortex Beam, Yanming Zhang, Lijun Jiang
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Due to the divergence of the orbital angular momentum (OAM) beam, the OAM demultiplexing needs a considerable aperture size to acquire the OAM field information, which brings the challenges to implementation of the receiving end. To tackle this issue, we develop a partial arc sampling receiving (PASR) scheme for demultiplexing of the vortex beams by using the augmented dynamic mode decomposition (A-DMD) approach. Simulation benchmarks are provided to demonstrate the validity of the proposed novel demultiplexing method.

Multi-Polarization Phase Retrieval In Near Field Far-Field Transformation, Yuan Ping, Lijun Jiang
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In near field far-field transformation (NFFFT), accurate recovery of the current distribution is subjected to the phase measurement. Phase retrieval is an alternative way to recover the current distribution by utilizing the magnitude-only near field sampling data. In phase retrieval algorithm, sufficient independent measurement data are required. Multi-polarization algorithm is employed to generate different current distribution, then, obtaining more independent near field data. Experimental validations of a numeric examples show its potentialities and interest.

EVMS School of Health Professions Faculty Publications
Breast cancer poses the greatest threat to human life and especially to women's life. Despite the progress made in data mining technology in recent years, the ability to predict and diagnose such fatal diseases based on gene expression data still reveals a limited prediction performance, which may not be surprising since most of the genes in expression data are believed to be irrelevant or redundant. The dimensionality reduction process may be considered as a crucial step to analyze gene expression data, as it can reduce the high dimensionality of the breast cancer datasets, which may result into a better prediction …

Poor water solubility, off-target toxicity, and small therapeutic window are among major obstacles for the development of drug products. Redox-responsive drug delivery nanoplatforms not only overcome the delivery and pharmacokinetic pitfalls observed in conventional drug delivery but also leverage the site-specific delivery properties. Cleavable diselenide and disulfide bonds in the presence of elevated reactive oxygen species (ROS) and glutathione concentration are among widely used stimuli-responsive bonds to design nanocarriers. This review covers a wide range of redox-responsive chemical structures and their properties for designing nanoparticles aiming controlled loading, delivery, and release of hydrophobic anticancer drugs at tumor site.
Develop Biochar-Based Controlled Release Nitrogen Fertilizers, Zhisheng Cen
Develop Biochar-Based Controlled Release Nitrogen Fertilizers, Zhisheng Cen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The current efficiency of conventional nitrogenous fertilizers (e.g. urea, ammonium sulfate, etc.) in agricultural practices is low, fluctuating from 30 to 40%. Approximately 60% of nitrogenous fertilizers were wasted due to vaporization into the air, runoff or leaching into water systems. The lost nitrogen (N) resulted in not only high production cost but also serious environmental problems, such as greenhouse gas (N2O) emission in the atmosphere, algal blooms, oxygen depletion, fish kills, and loss of biodiversity in surface water due to eutrophication or pollution. To address these problems, this study aimed to utilize low-cost biochar-based materials to develop a controllable, …

Nanoscale Spatial Realization Of Grain Boundary Defects And Its Passivation In Perovskite Solar Cells, Ashraful Haider Chowdhury
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have seen significant improvement in photovoltaic performance in recent days. However, the performance of PSCs is limited by the defects present at grain boundaries (GB). The study adapted here discusses the nanoscale spatial realization of grain boundary defects and its passivation in perovskite solar cells. Conventional MAPbI3 and state- of-the-art Cs5(MA0.17FA0.83)95Pb(I0.83Br0.17)3-FAMACs perovskite GBs were studied in detail using atomic force microscopy. The density of trap states calculation by kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) shows that FAMACs perovskites have lower defects at GB compared with MAPbI3 perovskites. This improvement is caused by the less activation energy of …

Material Analysis Of 3d Welded 5356 Aluminum Alloy, Ryan Fouts
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Metal 3D printing has been reserved for aerospace and high-end automotive industries because of its cost. A gas metal arc welder (GMAW) on a rugged 3D printer frame could make metal additive manufacturing an option for more industries and consumers. 3D welded aluminum has not been examined in depth as an option for additive manufacturing (AM). Extensive tests are necessary to determine the correct settings to use a metal inert gas (MIG) welder for AM. Porosity within the welded material must be evaluated to better understand the additive process. The material properties of 3D welded aluminum will be tested and …

The increasing application of geographic information system (GIS) technology in watershed modeling makes is necessary to further evaluate its impacts on runoff characteristics as a basis for improved hydrologic analysis in ungauged watersheds. Experts in the field of water resources and hydrology have recommended the practice of subdivision when modeling a watershed, and the use of observed data from hydrologically similar watershed to calibrate and validate an ungauged watershed’s model. However, previous studies have failed to adequately address the issues of watershed heterogeneity, spatial and temporal variability in physical parameters, GIS data resolution issues, including artifacts in automated extraction of …
Effect Of Surface Roughness And External Loading On Embedment In Steel And Aluminum Bolted Joints, Nathan Stang
Effect Of Surface Roughness And External Loading On Embedment In Steel And Aluminum Bolted Joints, Nathan Stang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Embedment in bolted joints is defined as the local deformation of surfaces into one another due to uneven contact. Embedment that occurs after the tightening of a bolted joint can cause loss of preload in the joint potentially leading to failure. VDI 2230, a German standard for bolted joint design, is currently the main source for engineers regarding embedment. It related expected embedment to the surface roughness in steel bolted joints. This research expands on the VDI standard by performing tests on a commonly used aluminum alloy and a steel alloy. Both cold rolled 1045 steel and 6061- T6511 aluminum …

Efficient Solution Of Surface Erosion In Particle-Laden Hypersonic Flows, Andrew Hinkle, Serhat Hosder, Christopher Johnston
Efficient Solution Of Surface Erosion In Particle-Laden Hypersonic Flows, Andrew Hinkle, Serhat Hosder, Christopher Johnston
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The standard approach for simulating hypersonic dust erosion problems using mixed Eulerian-Lagrangian two-phase solvers is too computationally expensive for routine simulations, and particularly for uncertainty quantification (UQ) analyses. To enable these analyses, a new approach for solving this problem with a sparse set of particles is presented and demonstrated on a problem from literature involving the ExoMars Schiaparelli entry vehicle. This new approach, referred to here as the Trajectory Control Volume (TCV) method is verified against traditional approaches based on Monte Carlo, and is shown to require over 3 orders-of-magnitude less samples to obtain the same results. An example UQ …

Enthesis Strength, Toughness And Stiffness: An Image-Based Model Comparing Tendon Insertions With Varying Bony Attachment Geometries, Mikhail Golman, Victor Birman, Stavros Thomopoulos, Guy M. Genin
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Tendons of the body differ dramatically in their function, mechanics and range of motion, but all connect to bone via an enthesis. Effective force transfer at the enthesis enables joint stability and mobility, with strength and stiffness arising from a fibrous architecture. However, how enthesis toughness arises across tendons with diverse loading orientations remains unclear. To study this, we performed simultaneous imaging of the bone and tendon in entheses that represent the range of tendon-to-bone insertions and extended a mathematical model to account for variations in insertion and bone geometry. We tested the hypothesis that toughness, across a range of …
Modeling Rack Force For Steering Maneuvers In A Stationary Vehicle, Nilay Kant, Raunav Chitkara, Prerit Pramod
Modeling Rack Force For Steering Maneuvers In A Stationary Vehicle, Nilay Kant, Raunav Chitkara, Prerit Pramod
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A steering system converts circular motion of the steering wheel into yaw motion of the road-wheels. In absence of a steering assist mechanism, the driver torque overcomes the tire-road friction forces, which is transmitted to the steering rack through tie rods attached to the road-wheels. The net force acting on the rack is then transmitted to the steering wheel through mechanical linkages which results in natural haptic feedback, commonly referred to as the steering feel. In an electric/hydraulic power steering, an electro-mechanical actuator applies assist force, which reduces the torque required by the driver. In order to maintain stability of …

Improved Secure And Low Computation Authentication Protocol For Wireless Body Area Network With Ecc And 2d Hash Chain, Soohyeon Choi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Since technologies have been developing rapidly, Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) has emerged as a promising technique for healthcare systems. People can monitor patients’ body condition and collect data remotely and continuously by using WBAN with small and compact wearable sensors. These sensors can be located in, on, and around the patient’s body and measure the patient’s health condition. Afterwards sensor nodes send the data via short-range wireless communication techniques to an intermediate node. The WBANs deal with critical health data, therefore, secure communication within the WBAN is important. There are important criteria in designing a security protocol for a …
Extended Pseudo Invariant Calibration Site-Based Trend-To-Trend Cross-Calibration Of Optical Satellite Sensors, Prathana Khakurel
Extended Pseudo Invariant Calibration Site-Based Trend-To-Trend Cross-Calibration Of Optical Satellite Sensors, Prathana Khakurel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Satellite sensors have been extremely useful and are in massive demand in the understanding of the Earth’s surface and monitoring of changes. For quantitative analysis and acquiring consistent measurements, absolute radiometric calibration is necessary. The most common vicarious approach of radiometric calibration is cross-calibration, which helps to tie all the sensors to a common radiometric scale for consistent measurement. One of the traditional methods of cross-calibration is performed using temporally and spectrally stable pseudo-invariant calibration sites (PICS). This technique is limited by adequate cloud-free acquisitions for cross-calibration which would require a longer time to study the differences in sensor measurements. …
Detection Of Change Points In Pseudo-Invariant Calibration Sites Time Series Using Multi-Sensor Satellite Imagery, Neha Khadka
Detection Of Change Points In Pseudo-Invariant Calibration Sites Time Series Using Multi-Sensor Satellite Imagery, Neha Khadka
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The remote sensing community has extensively used Pseudo-Invariant Calibration Sites (PICS) to monitor the long-term in-flight radiometric calibration of Earth-observing satellites. The use of the PICS has an underlying assumption that these sites are invariant over time. However, the site’s temporal stability has not been assured in the past. This work evaluates the temporal stability of PICS by not only detecting the trend but also locating significant shifts (change points) lying behind the time series. A single time series was formed using the virtual constellation approach in which multiple sensors data were combined for each site to achieve denser temporal …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In recent years, there has been a fast-growing trend in developing urea (CO(NH2)2) as a substitute H2 carrier in energy conversion due to its high energy density, nontoxicity, stability, and nonflammability. Urea, a byproduct in the metabolism of proteins and a frequent contaminant in wastewater, is an abundant compound that has demonstrated favorable characteristics as a hydrogen-rich fuel source with 6.7 wt % gravimetric hydrogen content. Also, there is 2-2.5 wt % urea from mammal urine; therefore, 0.5 million ton of additional fuels will be produced per year just from human urine (240 million ton each year). Electrochemical oxidation has …

Since the inception of evolution, nature has continuously optimized all the natural materials. These optimizations are so efficient that scientists and engineers have started taking inspiration from nature. Such inspiration-based solutions provide sustainable development of new materials with enhanced structural properties and functionalities (such as stiffness, stability, toughness, self-healing etc.). This variety of properties and functionalities is mainly due to the hierarchical organization of such components. Abstraction of the hidden cues of the hierarchical organization, principles and underlying structure-function relations are some of the critical approaches of bioinspired materials design. Inspiration from animals and plants has helped develop the design …
