Pulse Decay Thermal Conductivity Device, Matthew Schrenk Jan 2021

Pulse Decay Thermal Conductivity Device, Matthew Schrenk

All Undergraduate Projects

Currently, there are several ways in which thermal conductivity can be calculated or assessed on a given material. However, with each method of testing comes potential limitations such as size, material state, complexity, and time. The goal of this study was to develop a pulse heated thermistor that would reduce all four limitations, thus provide precise and timely results regardless of the material state and size. A thermistor is resistor which changes resistance in accordance to temperature. To achieve the design, heat transfer and electrical methods were applied. As with all resistors, heat is dissipated across the element and released …

Jcati Carbon Fiber Recycling Shredder, Benjamin Cooley Jan 2021

Jcati Carbon Fiber Recycling Shredder, Benjamin Cooley

All Undergraduate Projects

Once carbon fibers are cast into a resin and used in a composite material, retrieving those fibers can be a difficult task. However, it is beneficial to recycle and reuse the fibers from old unneeded components rather than pay the cost of acquiring new ones. The Joint Center for Aerospace Technology Innovation (JCATI) carbon fiber recycling device condenses the multistep process of extracting the fibers by integrating all steps into one automated device. In the previous version of the device, the cutting blades turned the long composite strips into thin fingers but did not sever them across the width.

The …

Balsa Wood Drawbridge, Kyle Engebretson Jan 2021

Balsa Wood Drawbridge, Kyle Engebretson

All Undergraduate Projects

Which truss design is best suited to a drawbridge when precision equipment is unavailable for the construction process and what design is suitable for the articulation system? To address this problem, several different designs were considered for a truss made of balsa wood. Initially a warren truss, a k-truss, and a bowstring truss were considered. The designs were evaluated using a decision matrix, the winning design was produced and tested. The testing methods used were a mass limit of the bridge, a minimum length requirement, loading requirements, and a minimum height for the roadway to reach when raised. Various other …

All Undergraduate Projects

The project requires the individual to design and construct a truss bridge made from balsa wood and wood glue to perform several objectives. The main objectives are to articulate the bridge by raising it, to conform to dimensional requirements, to allow a vehicle to travel along the road deck, and to hold a minimum load. The bridge must be able to articulate in two different ways. First, the articulation system can lift the road deck vertically while on top of the bridge. Second, raise the bridge with a pivot when the articulation system is placed at the specified end of …

Thermal Conductivity Measuring System (Tcoms), Lucas Hill Jan 2021

Thermal Conductivity Measuring System (Tcoms), Lucas Hill

All Undergraduate Projects

The Mechanical Engineering Technology department at Central Washington University is lacking a method to reliably measure the thermal conductivity of bulk materials, with dimensions of at least a 1 cm radius, within a teaching environment. Thermal Conductivity Measuring System (TCoMS) will be a useful tool to perform these measurements as it is able to obtain measurement readings for materials between 0 C and 50 C within 20 seconds. TCoMS will accomplish this by using the pulse decay method of measuring thermal conductivity, a form of transient heat transfer analysis. This method is performed by generating a pulse of heat at …

Thermal Conductivity Measuring Device, Kyle Saalfeld Jan 2021

Thermal Conductivity Measuring Device, Kyle Saalfeld

All Undergraduate Projects

The thermal conductivity measuring device is used to measure thermal conductivity of solids, liquids, and food products. Thermal conductivity is a material property that determines the rate at which heat disperses through a material. This determines how well insulation works, what materials are used as heat sinks, refrigeration, and how thoroughly food is cooked. The device measures thermal conductivity by heating up a thermistor bead using a high magnitude current for a measured duration and allowing the given heat to disperse; meeting the goal of designing a device that can easily measure the conductivity. Additional requirements of this device include …

Chemical and Life Science Engineering Publications

Model systems approaches search for commonality in patterns underlying biological diversity and complexity led by common evolutionary paths. The success of the approach does not rest on the species chosen but on the scalability of the model and methods used to develop the model and engage research. Fine-tuning approaches to improve coral cell cultures will provide a robust platform for studying symbiosis breakdown, the calcification mechanism and its disruption, protein interactions, micronutrient transport/exchange, and the toxicity of nanoparticles, among other key biological aspects, with the added advantage of minimizing the ethical conundrum of repeated testing on ecologically threatened organisms. The …

Machine Assisted Experimentation Of Extrusion-Based Bioprinting Systems, Shuyu Tian, Rory Stevens, Bridget T. Mcinnes, Nastassja Lewinski

Chemical and Life Science Engineering Publications

Optimization of extrusion-based bioprinting (EBB) parameters have been systematically conducted through experimentation. However, the process is time- and resource-intensive and not easily translatable to other laboratories. This study approaches EBB parameter optimization through machine learning (ML) models trained using data collected from the published literature. We investigated regression-based and classification-based ML models and their abilities to predict printing outcomes of cell viability and filament diameter for cell-containing alginate and gelatin composite bioinks. In addition, we interrogated if regression-based models can predict suitable extrusion pressure given the desired cell viability when keeping other experimental parameters constant. We also compared models trained …

Moving Beyond ‘More Crop Per Drop’: Insights From Two Decades Of Research On Agricultural Water Productivity, Meredith Giordano, Susanne M. Scheierling, David O. Tréguer, Hugh Turral, Peter G. Mccornick

Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute: Faculty Publications

Concern over increasing water scarcity has led to the introduction of the concept of agricultural water productivity and an emphasis on interventions to achieve ‘more crop per drop’. Yet, a strong debate continues on how the concept is to be defined and used. Drawing largely from the irrigation literature, the origins of the concept and its methodological developments are reviewed, and its use in applied work over two decades is discussed. Based on this analysis of conceptual and applied research, key insights into the concept’s contributions and limitations are presented, as well as opportunities for further refinements.

An Lpc Pole Processing Method For Enhancing The Identification Of Dominant Spectral Features, Jin Xu, Mark Davis, Ruairí De Fréin Jan 2021

An Lpc Pole Processing Method For Enhancing The Identification Of Dominant Spectral Features, Jin Xu, Mark Davis, Ruairí De Fréin

Articles

This paper proposes a new time-resolved spectral analysis method based on a modification to the Linear Predictive Coding (LPC) method for enhancing the identification of the dominant frequencies of a signal. The method described here is based on a z-plane analysis of the LPC poles. These poles are used to produce a series of reduced order filter transfer functions which can accurately identify and estimate the frequency of the dominant spectral features. The standard LPC method has been shown to suffer from a sensitivity to noise and its performance is dependent on the filter order. The proposed method can accurately …

Hybrid Modelling For Stroke Care: Review And Suggestions Of New Approaches For Risk Assessment And Simulation Of Scenarios, Tilda Herrgårdh, Vince I. Madai, John Kelleher, Rasmus Magnusson, Mika Gustafsson, Lili Milani, Peter Gennemark, Gunnar Cedersund

Articles

Stroke is an example of a complex and multi-factorial disease involving multiple organs, timescales, and disease mechanisms. To deal with this complexity, and to realize Precision Medicine of stroke, mathematical models are needed. Such approaches include: 1) machine learning, 2) bioinformatic network models, and 3) mechanistic models. Since these three approaches have complementary strengths and weaknesses, a hybrid modelling approach combining them would be the most beneficial. However, no concrete approach ready to be implemented for a specific disease has been presented to date. In this paper, we both review the strengths and weaknesses of the three approaches, and propose …

An Analysis Of Estimated Costs Versus Actual Costs In Usace Section 14 Emergency Streambank Protection Projects, Hunter Waugaman

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Civil Works projects are designed to provide national management of water resources. These works use emergency streambank protection to protect public facilities, like bridges and highways. The projects under this authority have limited funding, therefore, many design and field studies are omitted, which increases project uncertainties resulting in cost overruns and contract modifications. This study analyzes previously constructed projects by comparing the independent government estimate with the contractor’s actual costs and identifying the variables causing these differences via statistical analysis. The variables identified are categorized into those elements that affect the accuracy of …

Climate Resilience: Examination Of Revised Heat Transfer Models In The Enhanced Integrated Climatic Model For Pavement Temperature Prediction, Austin Michael Jarrell Jan 2021

Climate Resilience: Examination Of Revised Heat Transfer Models In The Enhanced Integrated Climatic Model For Pavement Temperature Prediction, Austin Michael Jarrell

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The Mechanistic Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) is commonly referenced as the state-of-the-practice for the analysis and design of new and rehabilitated pavement assets. The Enhanced Integrated Climatic Model (EICM) incorporated within the MEPDG is a well-recognized and standardized method for estimating temperature profiles in pavements; temperature is a portion of the climate inputs in the MEPDG. Many have already begun to convert atmospheric temperature predictions from externally based climate models into the MEPDG to create robust designs for climate change. As pavement designers and researchers seek robust solutions while formulating resilient pavement designs, it is likely that the EICM …

Artificial Intelligence Aided Receiver Design For Wireless Communication Systems, Wenjie Xu Jan 2021

Artificial Intelligence Aided Receiver Design For Wireless Communication Systems, Wenjie Xu

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Physical layer (PHY) design in the wireless communication field realizes gratifying achievements in the past few decades, especially in the emerging cellular communication systems starting from the first generation to the fifth generation (5G). With the gradual increase in technical requirements of large data processing and end-to-end system optimization, introducing artificial intelligence (AI) in PHY design has cautiously become a trend. A deep neural network (DNN), one of the population techniques of AI, enables the utilization of its ‘learnable’ feature to handle big data and establish a global system model. In this thesis, we exploited this characteristic of DNN as …

A Molecular Dynamic Study On The Piezoelectric Properties Of Bulk Zns And Nanobelts, Rui Xie

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

In this thesis we proved the feasibility of using classical atomic simulations, namely molecular dynamics and molecular statics, to study the piezoelectric properties of bulk and nanobelts ZnS structures, by utilizing the core-shell atomic potential model. Based on the verification of bulk and nanobelts ZnO piezoelectric constants, utilizing LAMMPS scripts and the Nyberg et al. core-shell potential, we reported the bulk ZnS piezoelectric constants calculated using three different classical interatomic core-shell ZnS potentials; the Wright and Jackson (1995) potential, the Wright and Gale (2004) potential, and the Namsani et al. (2015) potential. The simulation results showed that the Wright and …
