Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Analysis of several pulse shape properties generated by a Geiger Mueller (GM) detector and its dependence on applied voltage was performed. The two-source method was utilized to measure deadtime while simultaneously capturing pulse shape parameters on an oscilloscope. A wide range of operating voltages (600-1200 V) beyond the recommended operating voltage of 900 V was investigated using three radioactive sources (204Tl, 137Cs, 22Na). This study investigates the relationship between operating voltage, pulse shape properties, and deadtime of the detector. Based on the data, it is found that deadtime decreases with increasing voltage from 600 to 650 …

Noise Optimizes Super-Turing Computation In Recurrent Neural Networks, Emmett Redd, Steven Senger, Tayo Obafemi-Ajayi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper explores the benefit of added noise in increasing the computational complexity of digital recurrent neural networks (RNNs). The physically accepted model of the universe imposes rational number, stochastic limits on all calculations. An analog RNN with those limits calculates at the super-Turing complexity level BPP/log∗. In this paper, we demonstrate how noise aids digital RNNs in attaining super-Turing operation similar to analog RNNs. We investigate moving limited-precision systems from not being chaotic at small amounts of noise, through consistency with chaos, to overwhelming it at large amounts of noise. A Kolmogorov-complexity-based proof shows that an infinite computational class …

Engineering Science Faculty Publications

Whole-body vibration (WBV) is commonly applied in exercise and rehabilitation and its safety issues have been a major concern. Vibration measured using accelerometers can be used to further analyze the vibration transmissibility. Optimal bending angles and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) evaluations have not been sufficiently explored to mitigate the adverse effect. Therefore, the aims of this study were to investigate the effect of various knee flexion angles on the transmissibility to the head and knee, the RPE during WBV exposure, and the link between the transmissibility to the head and the RPE. Sixteen participants randomly performed static squats with …

Wideband Anti-Jamming Based On Free Space Optical Communication And Photonic Signal Processing, Ben Wu, Yang Qi, Chenxi Qiu, Ying Tang

Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research

We propose and demonstrate an anti-jamming system to defend against wideband jamming attack. Free space optical communication is deployed to provide a reference for jamming cancellation. The mixed signal is processed and separated with photonic signal processing method to achieve large bandwidth. As an analog signal processing method, the cancellation system introduces zero latency. The radio frequency signals are modulated on optical carriers to achieve wideband and unanimous frequency response. With wideband and zero latency, the system meets the key requirements of high speed and real-time communications in transportation systems.

Modeling The Release And Spreading Of Permanganate From Aerated Slow-Release Oxidants In A Laboratory Flow Tank, Ann Kambhu, Yusong Li, Troy E. Gilmore, Steve D. Comfort

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Aerated, slow-release oxidants are a relatively new technology for treating contaminated aquifers. A critical need for advancing this technology is developing a reliable method for predicting the radius of influence (ROI) around each drive point. In this work, we report a series of laboratory flow tank experiments and numerical modeling efforts designed to predict the release and spreading of permanganate from aerated oxidant candles (oxidant-wax composites). To mimic the design of the oxidant delivery system used in the field, a double screen was used in a series of flow tank experiments where the oxidant was placed inside the inner screen …

Exploring The Silent Aspect Of Carbon Nanopores, Teresa J. Bandosz Feb 2021

Exploring The Silent Aspect Of Carbon Nanopores, Teresa J. Bandosz

Publications and Research

Recently, owing to the discovery of graphene, porous carbons experienced a revitalization in their explorations. However, nowadays, the focus is more on search for suitable energy advancing catalysts sensing, energy storage or thermal/light absorbing features than on separations. In many of these processes, adsorption, although not emphasized sufficiently, can be a significant step. It can just provide a surface accumulation of molecules used in other application-driving chemical or physical phenomena or can be even an additional mechanism adding to the efficiency of the overall performance. However, that aspect of confined molecules in pores and their involvement in the overall performance …

Piezoelectrically-Transduced Zno-On-Diamond Resonators With Enhanced Signal-To-Noise Ratio And Power-Handling Capability For Sensing And Wireless Communication Applications, Xu Han Feb 2021

Piezoelectrically-Transduced Zno-On-Diamond Resonators With Enhanced Signal-To-Noise Ratio And Power-Handling Capability For Sensing And Wireless Communication Applications, Xu Han

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Microelectromechanical system (MEMS) resonators emerged a few decades ago, and now they have been well developed and commercially utilized as a core part in many radio frequency (RF) communication hardware as well as micro-sensing and detections for many different latest applications. Since MEMS-based devices are made small thanks to the microfabrication technology's improvement, the cost can be drastically reduced when mass-produced on wafer batches, and the devices still maintain a decent performance with negligible power consumption. This perfectly fits into the requirements of the newest internet-of-thing (IoT) and headset applications. Our previous research mainly focuses on designing and fabricating MEMS …

Improving Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (Vawt) Performance With Placement Strategies: Final Report, Patrick A. Tebbe, Nazli A. Yilmaz Wodzinski, Namyong Lee

Mechanical and Civil Engineering Department Publications

This project was focused on the use and placement of vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs). Studies were focused on areas not typically addressed in previous work; small wind at very low elevations (i.e. within the boundary layer). Numerical studies were made of how VAWTs function as well as the potential wind environments they may be placed in. A simplified numerical code, based on two-dimensional potential flow functions, was developed to model flow around buildings and other structures. The code allows a rapid determination of regions where flow may experience speed-up and where turbulence may result.

Experimental facilities were designed and …

State Consistence Of Data-Driven Reduced Order Models For Parametric Aeroelastic Analysis, William C. Krolick, Jung I. Shu, Yi Wang, Kapil Pant

Faculty Publications

This paper investigates the state consistence of parametric data-driven reduced order models (ROMs) in a state-space form obtained by various system identification methods, including autoregressive exogenous (ARX) and subspace identification (N4SID), for aeroelastic analysis in varying flight conditions. The target flight envelop is first partitioned into discrete grid points, on each of which an aerodynamic ROM is constructed using system identification to capture the dependence of the generalized aerodynamic force on the generalized displacement of structural modes. High-fidelity aeroelastic modal perturbation simulations are used to generate the ROM training and verification data. Aerodynamic ROMs not on the grid point are …

Editors’ Choice-Power-Generating Electrochemical Co2 Scrubbing From Air Enabling Practical Aemfc Application, Yiwei Zheng, Garrett Huang, Mrinmay Mandal, John R. Varcoe, Paul A. Kohl, William E. Mustain

Faculty Publications

Anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs) have been widely touted as a low-cost alternative to existing proton exchange membrane fuel cells. However, AEMFCs operating on air suffer from a severe performance penalty caused by carbonation from exposure to CO2. Many approaches to removing CO2 from the cathode inlet would consume valuable energy and complicate the systems-level balance-of-plant. Therefore, this work focuses on an electrochemical solution where CO2 removal would still generate power, but not expose an entire AEMFC stack to carbonation conditions. Such a system consists of two AEMFCs in series. The first AEMFC, which acts as an anion exchange …

Defect Detection In Freight Railcar Tapered-Roller Bearings Using Vibration Techniques, Constantine Tarawneh, Joseph Montalvo, Brent Wilson

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Currently, there are two types of defect detection systems used to monitor the health of freight railcar bearings in service: wayside hot-box detection systems and trackside acoustic detection systems. These systems have proven to be inefficient in accurately determining bearing health, especially in the early stages of defect development. To that end, a prototype onboard bearing condition monitoring system has been developed and validated through extensive laboratory testing and a designated field test in 2015 at the Transportation Technology Center, Inc. in Pueblo, CO. The devised system can accurately and reliably characterize the health of bearings based on developed vibration …
