Negative Influence Minimization Algorithm For Social Networks, Yang Yi, Chunxiao Wu, He Ming, Zhou Bo
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: While positive information is spreading in social networks, there is still a large amount of negative information spreading in the network. Aiming at the fact that there is few researches on suppressing the spread of negative information, a negative influence minimization algorithm for social networks is proposed. When negative information appears in social networks and some initial nodes are infected, the behavior of nodes propagating information depends on its coordination game with neighbor nodes. The objective function with minimal influence is used to find the K optimal blocking nodes, and finally the size of the final infected node is …

The excessive use and disposal of plastic packaging materials have drawn increasing concerns from the society because of the detrimental effect on environment and ecosystems. As the most widely used fruit packing material, polyethylene (PE) film is not suitable for long-term preservation of some tropical fruits, such as mangos, due to its inferior gas permeability. Cellulose based film can be made from renewable resources and is biodegradable and environmental-friendly, which makes it a promising alternative to PE as a packaging material. In this study, cellulose film synthesized from delignified banana stem fibers via an ionic liquid 1-Allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([AMIm][Cl]) were …

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
Mussel foot proteins (Mfps) contain a large amount of the catecholic amino acid, DOPA, allowing the marine organism to anchor themselves onto various surfaces in a turbulent and wet environment. Modification of polymers with catechol imparts these materials with a strong, wet adhesive property. The oxidation chemistry and oxidation state of catechol are critical to the design of synthetic adhesives and biomaterials. In this Mini-Review, the effect of catechol oxidation state on adhesion, oxidation-mediated catechol cross-linking, and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) during catechol oxidation are reviewed. Finally, the tuning of catechol oxidation state in designing stimuli-responsive adhesives …

How A Low-Cost Method For Cumulative Water-Sampling Shows Need For Improvement Of Legal Public-Contact Standards In The United States, Samuel C. Kessler
Grawemeyer Colloquium Papers
Across the world, it is estimated that 4.5 billion people live near water sources “impaired” for use or contact. Standards for human-interaction are established by international organizations such as the WHO, and legislative bodies from national to local levels with jurisdiction over the quality of our waterways to ensure public & environmental health. Standards are often assessed from “grab-samples” taken from a waterbody at a certain time, with a minimum number analyzed. Water-quality standards in the United States are enforced under the Clean Water Act (CWA) via the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), applying to “waters of the United States” (WOTUS). …

Adversarial Targeted Forgetting In Regularization And Generative Based Continual Learning Models, Muhammad Umer, Robi Polikar
Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research
Continual (or "incremental") learning approaches are employed when additional knowledge or tasks need to be learned from subsequent batches or from streaming data. However these approaches are typically adversary agnostic, i.e., they do not consider the possibility of a malicious attack. In our prior work, we explored the vulnerabilities of Elastic Weight Consolidation (EWC) to the perceptible misinformation. We now explore the vulnerabilities of other regularization-based as well as generative replay-based continual learning algorithms, and also extend the attack to imperceptible misinformation. We show that an intelligent adversary can take advantage of a continual learning algorithm's capabilities of retaining existing …

Carbonaceous (e.g., limestone) and aluminosilicate (e.g., calcined clay) mineral additives are routinely used to partially replace ordinary portland cement in concrete to alleviate its energy impact and carbon footprint. These mineral additives—depending on their physicochemical characteristics—alter the hydration behavior of cement; which, in turn, affects the evolution of microstructure of concrete, as well as the development of its properties (e.g., compressive strength). Numerical, reaction-kinetics models—e.g., phase boundary nucleation-and-growth models; which are based partly on theoretically-derived kinetic mechanisms, and partly on assumptions—are unable to produce a priori prediction of hydration kinetics of cement; especially in multicomponent systems, wherein chemical interactions among …

Utilizing A Fully Optical And Reconfigurable Puf As A Quantum Authentication Mechanism, H. Shelton Jacinto, A. Matthew Smith, Nader I. Rafla
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
In this work, the novel usage of a physically unclonable function composed of a network of Mach-Zehnder interferometers for authentication tasks is described. The physically unclonable function hardware is completely reconfigurable, allowing for a large number of seemingly independent devices to be utilized, thus imitating a large array of single-response physically unclonable functions. It is proposed that any reconfigurable array of Mach-Zehnder interferometers can be used as an authentication mechanism, not only for physical objects, but for information transmitted both classically and quantumly. The proposed use-case for a fully-optical physically unclonable function, designed with reconfigurable hardware, is to authenticate messages …

High-Temperature Stable Fbgs Fabricated By A Point-By-Point Femtosecond Laser Inscription For Multi-Parameter Sensing, Chen Zhu, Dinesh Alla, Jie Huang
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A high-temperature resistant fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with pronounced cladding modes is fabricated using a simple, fast, and flexible point-by-point femtosecond laser inscription. Cladding modes of different orders exhibit various sensitivities to changes in refractive index of the surrounding medium and temperature, while the Bragg wavelength is only dependent on the ambient temperature. By combining the resonance of cladding modes and the Bragg resonance, measurement of variations of temperature and surrounding refractive index can be achieved. Survivability of the cladding modes and the core mode in the fabricated FBG at elevated temperatures up to 1000°C is demonstrated.

Analyzing The Electricity Consumption And Costs Of Electrical-Powered Machines When There Is Orepass Failure In Underground Mine, Bartłomiej Skawina, Abubakary Salama
Tanzania Journal of Science
In underground mining environment where the loss of orepasses is a dominant factor, the mine may face a challenge of improving the loading and hauling operations. Some of the options will be to rehabilitate the lost orepasses, or developing the new ones. When the rehabilitation cost is high, alternative strategies should be applied to compensate for the orepasses failure. One of the possible options is to use diesel or electric Load-Haul-Dumps (LHDs). The use of diesel-powered LHDs will increase heat and gas emissions which increase environmental concerns and ventilation costs, while adoption of electric-powered vehicles needs to be analysed. Therefore, …

Latency Optimization In Smart Meter Networks, Amr Kassab
Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, we consider the problem of smart meter networks with data collection to a central point within acceptable delay and least consumed energy. In smart metering applications, transferring and collecting data within delay constraints is crucial. IoT devices are usually resource-constrained and need reliable and energy-efficient routing protocol. Furthermore, meters deployed in lossy networks often lead to packet loss and congestion. In smart grid communication, low latency and low energy consumption are usually the main system targets. Considering these constraints, we propose an enhancement in RPL to ensure link reliability and low latency. The proposed new additive composite …

Exploring The Efficiency Of Self-Organizing Software Teams With Game Theory, Clay Stevens, Jared Soundy, Hau Chan
School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers
Over the last two decades, software development has moved away from centralized, plan-based management toward agile methodologies such as Scrum. Agile methodologies are founded on a shared set of core principles, including self-organizing software development teams. Such teams are promoted as a way to increase both developer productivity and team morale, which is echoed by academic research. However, recent works on agile neglect to consider strategic behavior among developers, particularly during task assignment–one of the primary functions of a self-organizing team. This paper argues that self-organizing software teams could be readily modeled using game theory, providing insight into how agile …
