Open-Field Scale-Model Experiments Of Fire Whirls Over L-Shaped Line Fires, Yuto Iga, Kazunori Kuwana, Kozo Sekimoto, Yuji Nakamura
Progress in Scale Modeling, an International Journal
This paper presents the results of open-field scale-model experiments of fire-whirl formation over line fires. L-shaped line fires were burned in crosswinds, and the processes of fire-whirl formation were observed. The flame height was measured using an image-processing technique, while two-dimensional velocity components were measured at two different locations using ultrasonic anemometers. Two tests were selected for comparison: test A, in which intense fire whirls repeatedly formed, and test B, in which no whirls were observed. In test A, the wind flow was bent by the fire plume, creating swirling flows near the burning area, thereby forming fire whirls. On …
Effect Of Reduced Plume Entrainment On The Burning Rate Of Porous Fuel Beds, Sara Mcallister
Effect Of Reduced Plume Entrainment On The Burning Rate Of Porous Fuel Beds, Sara Mcallister
Progress in Scale Modeling, an International Journal
Large outdoor fires often exhibit unexpected fire behavior, particularly compared with much smaller fires. Understanding the difference between large- and small-scale fires is of importance for both fire behavior predictions and safety. Large fires are often characterized by very tall plumes that can extend to the stratosphere. Particularly as the actively burning area increases, plumes in large-scale fires likely entrain relatively little and may act in a similar fashion to a chimney. To explore the possible changes in burning rate due to the chimney effect, experiments were conducted with wood cribs burned with a chimney of variable height. The burning …
Scale Model Test To Estimate Thermal Damage By Fire In Aircraft Cargo, Jian Gao, Tsuneyoshi Matsuoka, Yuji Nakamura
Scale Model Test To Estimate Thermal Damage By Fire In Aircraft Cargo, Jian Gao, Tsuneyoshi Matsuoka, Yuji Nakamura
Progress in Scale Modeling, an International Journal
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires fire detectors to alarm within one minute of the start of a fire in cargo compartments of airplanes. To determine whether such alarm timing works, investigations of the thermal damage to ceilings and other structures during the early stage of a fire were accomplished to demonstrate compliance with these FAA regulations. The objective was to test the feasibility of predicting convective heat transfer in early stage of a cargo compartment fire by conducting reduced scale (lab scale) experiments. First, the scaling laws was derived and validated. Then, full-scale and half-scale experiments were performed with …

PEGylated and surface-tethered proteins are used in a variety of biotechnological applications, but traditional methods offer little control over the placement of the functionalization sites on the protein. Fortunately, recent experimental methods functionalize the protein at any location on the amino acid sequence, so the question becomes one of selecting the site that will result in the best protein function. This work shows how molecular simulation can be used to screen potential attachment sites for surface tethering or PEGylation. Previous simulation work has shown promise in this regard for a model protein, but these studies are limited to screening only …
Impact Of Covid -19 On Pilot Proficiency – A Risk Analysis, Rajee Olaganathan, Roli Angelo H. Amihan
Impact Of Covid -19 On Pilot Proficiency – A Risk Analysis, Rajee Olaganathan, Roli Angelo H. Amihan
Publications
Pilot proficiency is essential in the aviation industry to maintain a safety record for successfully operating airlines. The current COVID-19 scenario has made it practically difficult for pilots to achieve the federal requirements stated in Title 14 CFR 121.439 (a) and 14 CFR 61.57 (a) (1). It has placed a burden on pilots to maintain their currency and proficiency related to cost and lack of aircraft access due to furloughs and lay-offs. The purpose of the first part of this study was to assess the impact of COVID-19 on global air traffic based on the data collected from the International …

Extinguishment Of Diffusion Flames Formed Over A Porous Plate Burner Using Rubber Balloons Filled With Inert Gases, Hiroyuki Torikai, Shinya Kudo
Progress in Scale Modeling, an International Journal
We have proposed an inert gas, rubber-balloon extinguishing method which might increase the effectiveness of extinguishing flames and decreasing the amounts of agents needed for fire suppression. Hence, extinguishing experiments have been performed to further clarify possible extinguishing characteristics, mechanisms and scaling effects of this method. Carbon dioxide, nitrogen, argon and helium gases were used as the extinguishing agents. Methane-air and propane-air diffusion flames were formed on two different diameter, round porous plate burner and used as the targets for extinguishment. The extinguishing probabilities were measured, and the extinguishing processes were observed with a high-speed camera. As a result, an …

Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: To improve the accuracy of the firefly algorithm (FA) and solve the problem of fixed iteration step of the algorithm and easy to fall into local optimum, an improved firefly algorithm is proposed, i.e., EOFA. The EOFA algorithm combines the strong local search ability of extremal optimization algorithm with the strong search ability of firefly algorithm, and adopts the iterative step size of inverted s-type function to improve the optimization ability of the firefly algorithm. The simulation results of function optimization test shows that the improved EOFA algorithm has better optimization performance than firefly algorithm and particle swarm optimization …

Modeling Of Adversarial Behavior On Road Network Based On Non-Cooperative Game, Xiangyu Wei, Zhang Qi
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: The modeling of adversarial behavior is the key to the study of various military-like confrontation problems. Existing research mainly focus on the target domain, but in reality, many confrontation problems occur on the road network. Combined with the network flow representation of adversarial behavior, a network adversarial game modeling framework based on non-cooperative games is proposed, and a novel road network confrontation problem—network evasion interdiction game is given based on the framework. Simulation experiments show that the new double oracle algorithm performs better than the original linear solution algorithm. Data experiments based on real road networks further verify …

Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: Aiming at the nonlinear, time-varying and uncertain characteristics of the longitudinal motion of autonomous vehicles, a Radial Basis Function neural network(RBFNN) Proportional Integral Derivative(PID) controller base on Particle Swarm Optimization(PSO) is designed. Finally, a closed-loop adaptive control system model is built in MATLAB/Simulink. Simulation results show that …

A Quantized State System Method With Adaptive Quantum, Zhihua Li, Dongjin Fu, Li Guang, Zhihua Fan
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: Quantized state system (QSS) is a new numerical integration method. It has advantages over the traditional time-discrete integration methods in solving general ordinary differential equation (ODE) systems. But it is hard to choose an appropriate quantum for the QSS method. In order to improve the accuracy and efficiency of QSS, a quantized state system method with adaptive quantum (VQSS) is proposed. Combined with the idea of step control in the variable step Runge-Kutta method, it can adaptively change the quantum in the process of computation. The feasibility of this algorithm is verified by the simulation of two examples …

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications
The majority of architectural heritage consists of load-bearing masonry components made up of stone units and relatively weak mortar joints, yielding potential weak planes for masonry structures where tension and shear failures are expected to occur. Advanced nonlinear analyses are required to simulate these phenomena and predict the corresponding nonlinear structural behavior of historic masonry constructions. In this context, this paper presents a model of a stone masonry Roman aqueduct (the Valens Aqueduct), constructed in the fourth century A.D. in Istanbul, Turkey, to explore the seismic capacity and behavior using the discrete element method (DEM). The employed modeling approach comprises …
