Digital Signal Processing Algorithms Implemented On Graphics Processing Units And Software Development For Phased Array Receiver Systems, Mark William Ruzindana

Theses and Dissertations

Phased array receivers are a set of antenna elements that are capable of forming multiple simultaneous beams over a field of view. In radio astronomy, the study of deep space radio sources, a phased array feed (PAF) is placed at the focus of a large dish telescope that spatially samples the focal plane. PAFs provide an increase in the field of view as compared to the traditional single pixel horn feed, thereby increasing survey speed while maintaining low sensitivity. Phased arrays are also capable of radio frequency interference (RFI) mitigation which is useful in both radio astronomy and wireless communications …

Heuristics For Capacity Allocation And Queue Assignment In Congested Service Systems With Stochastic Customer Demand And Immobile Servers, Adam Colley Apr 2021

Heuristics For Capacity Allocation And Queue Assignment In Congested Service Systems With Stochastic Customer Demand And Immobile Servers, Adam Colley

Operations Research and Engineering Management

We propose easy-to-implement heuristics for a problem referred to in the literature as the facility location problem with immobile servers, stochastic demand, and congestion, or the service system design problem. The problem is typically posed as one of allocating capacity to a set of M/M/1 queues to which customers with stochastic demand are assigned with the objective of minimizing a cost function composed of a fixed capacity-acquisition cost, a variable customer-assignment cost, and an expected-waiting-time cost. The expected-waiting-time cost results in a non-linear term in the objective function of the standard binary programming formulation of the problem. Thus, the solution …

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

MELAMINE DERIVATIVES AS HIGHLY FLAME RETARDANT ADDITIVES FOR BIO-BASED RIGID POLYURETHANE FOAMS

Rigid foams, which are mainly used in construction, refrigerators, automotive industries are one of the important types of polyurethanes with great potential in insulation and energy efficiency. Unfortunately, rigid polyurethane foams are highly flammable and catch fire in a short amount of time as well as spread the flame quickly. Hence, rigid foams are considered hazardous materials due to life-threatening situations and environmental issues.

To counter that, nitrogen-based compounds as non-halogenated flame retardants are an effective, low-cost, and eco-friendly option. It has been shown that melamine derivates as …

High thermal conductivity materials show promise for thermal mitigation and heat removal in devices. However, shrinking the length scales of these materials often leads to significant reductions in thermal conductivities, thus invalidating their applicability to functional devices. In this work, we report on high in-plane thermal conductivities of 3.05, 3.75, and 6 μm thick aluminum nitride (AlN) films measured via steady-state thermoreflectance. At room temperature, the AlN films possess an in-plane thermal conductivity of ∼260 ± 40 W m–1 K–1, one of the highest reported to date for any thin film material of equivalent thickness. At low temperatures, the in-plane …

Cold In-Place Recycling Asphalt Mixtures: Laboratory Performance And Preliminary M-E Design Analysis, Dongzhao Jin, Dongdong Ge, Siyu Chen, Tiankai Che, Hongfu Liu, Lance Malburg, Zhanping You

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Cold in-place recycling (CIR) asphalt mixtures are an attractive eco-friendly method for rehabilitating asphalt pavement. However, the on-site CIR asphalt mixture generally has a high air void because of the moisture content during construction, and the moisture susceptibility is vital for estimating the road service life. Therefore, the main purpose of this research is to characterize the effect of moisture on the high-temperature and low-temperature performance of a CIR asphalt mixture to predict CIR pavement distress based on a mechanistic–empirical (M-E) pavement de-sign. Moisture conditioning was simulated by the moisture-induced stress tester (MIST). The moisture susceptibility performance of the CIR …

Compared with inorganic ferroelectrics, organic ferroelectrics have advantages of low cost and low toxicity, are in increasing demand in capacitors, piezoelectric, and memory devices to reduce the environmental load. This work focuses on two types of organic molecular ferroelectric materials, croconic acid (CA) and 2-methylbenzimidazole (MBI). The work here introduces several origins of ferroelectricity in typical organics and their switching mechanism. We then investigated the nucleation, growth, and ferroelectric measurements of CA thin films. We explored the effect of substrate temperature and an external electric field on the nucleation and growth processes. The results can be used to improve the …

On The Application Of Recursive Nonlinear State Transformations And Nonlinear Feedback To Enable Continuous Thrust Spacecraft Orbital Rendezvous, Parisa Khosravi Apr 2021

On The Application Of Recursive Nonlinear State Transformations And Nonlinear Feedback To Enable Continuous Thrust Spacecraft Orbital Rendezvous, Parisa Khosravi

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation presents a method to address exact feedback linearization problems based on the recursive application of approximate feedback linearization techniques. An approximate feedback linearization method is applied recursively to systems which are known to be an exact feedback linearizable to obtain a family of exact solutions up to the ρ-th degree utilizing the null space that appears as part of the computations. The coordinate transformation and feedback parameters are computed symbolically using a one-step approach in multi-stage form. This algorithm is algebraic and computationally simpler than solving the set of nonlinear partial differential equations. We employ the approximate feedback …

Fatal Crashes At Highway Rail Grade Crossings: A U.S. Based Study, Subasish Das, Xiaoqiang Kong, Steven M. Lavrenz, Lingtao Wu, Mohammad Jalayer

Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research

Crashes at highway rail grade crossings (HRGCs) are often involved with fatalities due to the momentum of a train. This study collected nine years (2010–2018) of fatal HRGC crashes from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) to perform the analysis. The Taxicab Correspondence Analysis (TCA) was applied to this dataset. This method identified several patterns that trigger HRGC-related fatal crashes. The findings indicate that fatal crashes involving multiple fatalities are often highly associated with alcohol-influenced drivers, poor lighting conditions, and inclement weather. The fatal crash that occurs during the daylight with the uninfluenced driver is less likely to involve more …

Free Vibration Analysis Of Rotating Beams Based On The Modified Couple Stress Theory And Coupled Displacement Field, Alireza Babaei, Masoud Arabghahestani Apr 2021

Free Vibration Analysis Of Rotating Beams Based On The Modified Couple Stress Theory And Coupled Displacement Field, Alireza Babaei, Masoud Arabghahestani

Mechanical Engineering Graduate Research

In this paper, transverse vibration analysis of rotating micro-beam is investigated based on the modified couple stress theory. The simply-supported micro-beam is modeled utilizing Euler-Bernoulli and Timoshenko beam theories. The system is rotating around a fixed axis perpendicular to the axial direction of the beam. For the first time, displacement filed is introduced as a coupled field to the translational field. In other words, the mentioned rotational displacement field is expressed as a proportional function of translational displacement field using first (axial), second (lateral), and third (angular or rotational) velocity factors. Utilizing Hamilton’s approach as a variational method, dynamic-vibration equations …
