Development Of An Ultraviolet Absorbance Assay To Estimate Air Entrainer Dosing For Concrete Containing Fly Ash, James Spencer
Development Of An Ultraviolet Absorbance Assay To Estimate Air Entrainer Dosing For Concrete Containing Fly Ash, James Spencer
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Fly ash is a coal combustion byproduct that can be used as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM) in concrete, offering benefits such as increased workability, durability, and strength. Fly ash can be used as a partial replacement to cement, reducing concrete productions costs and decreasing disposal in landfills. However, variability of fly ash properties (e.g., carbon content, adsorption site density) confounds estimates of the air entraining admixture (AEA) dose needed to achieve a specified air content in concrete. Air entrainment is needed to improve freeze-thaw resistance and limit concrete cracking. The foam index (FI) test is currently used to estimate …

Nonlinearity In Piezotransistive Iii-Nitride Resonant Microcantilevers, Ferhat Bayram
All Dissertations
Microcantilevers are an important form of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and have been widely used in notable applications including bio sensing, chemical detection, and imaging. Traditionally, laser based optical read-out systems have been used to measure amplitudes of the microcantilever tip oscillations (i.e. in an atomic force microscope (AFM)). However, this technique has several drawbacks including high power requirements and bulkiness that prevent commercializing of microcantilevers based miniaturized sensors. Monitoring oscillations of a cantilever array then also becomes immensely challenging. To overcome these problems, microcantilevers with integrated piezoresistive and piezotransistive deflection transducers have been developed. Because of issues related to piezoresistive …

Automatic System Restoration For Industrial Power Systems, Anusha Papasani
Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive
The power system industry often operates close to its limits to accommodate the increased demand posing a high risk of blackouts. Power system restoration techniques are utilized post breakout with the focus on load pickup and speedy recovery. In traditional heuristic methods, the load is considered to be constant after it is picked. However, from a system operation point of view, the load varies once picked. This is commonly observed in industrial loads. In Industrial systems, loads, which involve many induction motors, are started in sequence. The high starting currents of the induction motors leads to voltage sags that may …

With high penetration level of the wind power energy in the power grid, it is necessary to develop robust dynamic wind farm models for stability analysis under different scenarios. However, one single wind generator (WG) contains many parameter and control loops, it’s impractical to apply such detailed high-order model of individual wind turbine for dynamic stability analysis due to its computational burden and availability of the data. Therefore, there’s a need for deriving the dynamic equivalent model (DEM) for the wind farm. In the real world, a wind farm may contain different types of WGs coming from different manufactures/vendors with …

Detection of organic chemicals in liquid medium have been gaining utmost attention in recent times. Real time detection and monitoring of a variety of environmental pollutants, explosive materials, chemical agents, and pharmaceutical drugs in liquid medium are of great need in today’s technological advancements. While there are several scattering, emission and spectroscopy techniques in use, Raman spectroscopy is attractive because of its molecular specificity i.e., each molecule has a Raman fingerprint. Raman spectroscopy utilizes the inelastic portion of the scattered wave for detection. But since intensity of inelastic scattering (Raman scattering) is very low, compared to the elastic scattering, low …

Over several decades of careful experimental investigation and exhaustive development of discrete damage analysis methods including integrated computational mechanics methods, our community knows a great deal about how discrete defects such as matrix cracks and defect growth (e.g. delamination) can be predicted in structural composites. For many practical situations controlled by laminated multiaxial composite structures, the loss of performance and “sudden death” end of life is controlled by defect coupling which becomes a precursor to fracture plane development. These interaction sequences are highly dependent on local details of manufacture, design configurations, and loading for a given application material and influenced …

Design, Development, And Characterization Of A Flow Control Device For Dynamic Cooling Liquid-Cooled Servers, Hardik Yashwant Hurnekar
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
Since the early ’60s, based on Moore’s law, transistor density has been doubling every generation resulting in increased power density. Eventually, in the early ’90s, we moved from constant voltage to constant electric field and corresponding constant power for a given area during technology changes. Dennard’s model of voltage scaling and corresponding constant power ceased, ending improved performance gains in the early 2000s that again required techniques to mitigate increased power and corresponding temperature. The performance gain is being achieved by using multi-core processors, leading to non-uniform power distribution and localized high temperatures making cooling very challenging. Direct cold plate-based …

Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is the most common complication associated with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. Unfortunately, current in vitro models cannot be used to assess the potential of PCO due to their failure to simulate posterior curvature of the lens capsule (LC), contradicting observations, different testing conditions and inherent challenges associated with use of human capsular bag models, cells and other tissue substrates. To overcome such a challenge, a new system to study IOL: LC interaction and potentially predict PCO was developed in this effort. It is believed that the interactions between an IOL and the lens capsule (LC) may …

Surficial distresses in roadways of Texas are very common due to presence of high plastic clayey soil in the subgrade. Increased sensitivity of high plastic clay towards seasonal moisture change results in repeated swelling and shrinkage, and ultimately the development of pavement cracks. Annual expenses of such distresses impose huge financial liability to maintenance authorities. Studies have indicated rainwater intrusion into underlying expansive subgrade soil coupled with inadequate drainage as the main cause of pavement damage in semi-arid regions. The inability of drainage layer to laterally drain the excess moisture may lead to moisture accumulation within the base layer which …
