Ph-Responsive Oxygen/Glucose Delivery System To Increase Cell Survival Under Ischemia, Yubin Ying May 2021

Ph-Responsive Oxygen/Glucose Delivery System To Increase Cell Survival Under Ischemia, Yubin Ying

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Ischemic diseases, including myocardial infarction, stroke and limb ischemia, are life-threatening vascular diseases with high mortality. Under ischemic condition, less blood supply causes insufficient oxygen and nutrients transported to the affected tissues, which leads to cell death. To support cell survival under ischemia, oxygen and nutrients (especially glucose) are needed for aerobic respiration to generate energy. Therefore, directly supplying oxygen and glucose to the ischemic tissues is a promising therapy for ischemic diseases. In this work, we aim to design biomaterials to deliver oxygen and glucose to enhance cell survival under ischemia. In the first project, we fabricated oxygen releasing …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Three-dimensional (3D) graphene-based macrostructures are being developed to combat the issues associated with two-dimensional (2D) graphene materials in practical applications. The 3D macrostructures (3DMs), for example, membranes, fibres, sponges, beads, and mats, can be formed by the self-assembly of 2D graphene-based precursors with exceptional surface area and unique chemistry. With rational design, the 3D macrostructures can then possess outstanding properties and exclusive structures. Thanks to various advantages, these macrostructures are competing in a variety of applications with promising performances unlike the traditional activated carbons, biochars and hydrochars, which have less flexibilities for modifications towards versatile applications. However, despite having such …

Grandparent-Grandchild Virtual Communication Study, Tanya Keval May 2021

Grandparent-Grandchild Virtual Communication Study, Tanya Keval

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The cross generational bond between a grandparent and grandchild is extremely important. The stories, traditions, and beliefs that grandparents share with their grandchildren have the ability to shape their grandchildren’s beliefs. For grandparents, the role of being a grandparent and creating shared memories with their grandchildren leaves a positive impact on their mental health. Although the elderly population prefers to connect with others in-person, including their grandchildren, this face-to-face connection is not always possible due to schedules, distance, or health. Many products have been designed for grandparents and grandchildren to try to fill this communication gap when they are apart. …

Development Of A Design Guideline For Pile Foundations Subjected To Liquefaction-Induced Lateral Spreading, Milad Souri May 2021

Development Of A Design Guideline For Pile Foundations Subjected To Liquefaction-Induced Lateral Spreading, Milad Souri

Dissertations and Theses

Extensive loss of stiffness and strength in liquefied soils can cause large ground deformations during strong earthquake shaking. One of the major sources of damage in pile foundations in liquefied soil is the excessive deformation due to lateral spreading. Pile-supported wharves subjected to earthquake motions are expected to accommodate inertial loads imposed at pile head from the superstructure as well as the kinematic loads imposed on piles from the lateral ground deformations. Current design codes significantly vary on how to combine inertia and kinematic demands. Recent research on soil-foundation-structure interaction suffers from lack of experiment-based data. There is a serious …
