Controlled Reduction Of Graphene Oxide And Graphene Oxide-Carbon Nanotube Hybrids And Their Applications, Samar Azizighannad
Controlled Reduction Of Graphene Oxide And Graphene Oxide-Carbon Nanotube Hybrids And Their Applications, Samar Azizighannad
Dissertations
Graphene and graphene derivatives are widely used in diverse research and industrial applications. Graphene production on a large scale is carried out by exfoliating graphite oxide and producing graphene oxide (GO), which comprises of graphene sheets with different oxygen-containing functional groups such as hydroxyl, carboxyl, and carbonyl. GO is reduced to reduced graphene oxide (rGO), which has properties that are closer to graphene. Properties of GO and rGO depend upon the oxygen content, and the effect of reducing oxygen content on the aqueous behavior of rGOs is not well understood.
In an effort to understand how properties of rGO change …
Using Fnirs As An Objective Measure Of Susceptibility To Informational Masking, Min Zhang
Using Fnirs As An Objective Measure Of Susceptibility To Informational Masking, Min Zhang
Dissertations
Resolving complicated auditory scenes is crucial for daily communication where background sound is often present. However, most hearing aid (HA) and cochlear implant (CI) users have difficulties understanding speech when competing sound sources are present, resulting in reduced job opportunities and increased risk for social isolation. Perceptual interference from background sound is called auditory masking. At least two distinct masking phenomena exist, called energetic and informational masking (EM and IM).
In the first masking phenomenon, EM, target and masker energies coincide at the same time and frequency. Computational and physiological models of cochlear auditory processing can reliably predict listeners' performances …

Modeling And Analysis Of Intracellular Signaling Networks And Cellular Decisions, Mustafa Ozen
Dissertations
Developing molecular network analysis methods is important due to their applications on complex biological systems such as target discovery, development of drugs, discovering drug effects, and finding treatments for many complex diseases, e.g., cancer, autoimmune, and mental disorders. An example of analysis techniques is the fault diagnosis analysis, in which the purpose is to quantify how much vulnerable the entire network is to dysfunction of one or multiple molecules. Such analysis can be done after proper network models are implemented, trained, and tested against the experimental data. In this dissertation, a Boolean modeling framework is implemented and methods to train …

Publications and Research
This study aimed to clarify the role of glypican-1 and PECAM-1 in shear-induced nitric oxide production in endothelial cells. Atomic force microscopy pulling was used to apply force to glypican-1 and PECAM-1 on the surface of human umbilical vein endothelial cells and nitric oxide was measured using a fluorescent reporter dye. Glypican-1 pulling for 30 min stimulated nitric oxide production while PECAM-1 pulling did not. However, PECAM-1 downstream activation was necessary for the glypican-1 force-induced response. Glypican-1 knockout mice exhibited impaired flow-induced phosphorylation of eNOS without changes to PECAM-1 expression. A cooperation mechanism for the mechanotransduction of fluid shear stress …

Approach slab is a structural concrete slab that spans from the backwall of the abutment (i.e. end of the bridge floor) to the beginning of the paving section. The purpose of the approach slab is to carry the traffic loads over the backfill behind the abutments to avoid differential settlement that causes bumps at the bridge ends. Cast- in-place concrete approach slab is the current practice in US with various spans, reinforcement, thicknesses, joints, and concrete covers. NDOT has observed premature cracking in a significant number of approach slabs, which could result in a shorter service life and costly repairs/replacements …
Real Time Analysis Of Eye Movements Using Computer Aided Software, Farhan Ahmad
Real Time Analysis Of Eye Movements Using Computer Aided Software, Farhan Ahmad
Theses
Eye movement analysis is a slow and tasking job that require a trained vision analyst to sift through hundreds of eye movements. The difficulty of the task increases when a subject has undiagnosed eye related disorders. One such disorder is Convergence insufficiency (CI) which affects nearly 12 million people in the US. Convergence insufficiency occurs when the eyes are unable to coordinate simultaneous inward movement for near focal tracking. Individuals with CI are unable to coordinate eye movements this can result in many symptoms such as double vision, blurred vision, headaches, vision strain, and fatigue. A diagnosis for CI relies …

Theses
III-nitride ultraviolet (UV) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) offer marvelous potential for a wide range of applications, including air/water purification, surface disinfection, biochemical sensing, cancer cell elimination, and many more. III-nitride semiconductor alloys, especially AlGaN and AlInN, have drawn significant attention due to their significant advantages that include environmental-friendly material composition, compact in size, longer lifetime, low power consumption, and tunable optical emission. However, the performance of III-nitride UV LEDs in terms of efficiency and output power is still deficient. The presence of high defects and dislocations due to lattice-mismatched epilayers, polarization induced quantum-confined Stark effect, electron overflow with low hole injection …

Dimensionless Analysis Of Trajectories Of Cylindrical Objects Dropped Into Water In Two Dimensions, Yi Zhen
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Nondimensionalization is powerful technique and is widely applied in the study of fluid mechanics and engineering because it helps to reduce the number of free parameters, identify the relative size of effects of parameters, and gain a deeper insight of the essential nature of phenomena. The nondimensionalization of 2D theory has been completed by the author (Zhen et.al.,2020) and new dimensionless equations of motion were obtained. In this study, new dimensionless dynamic equations are extended by incorporating new parameters to cope with various environmental conditions. The new dimensionless analysis of dropped cylindrical objects is consisted of four parts.

Blowout - Capping - Fracturing - Relief Well, A Full Cycle Workflow, Youssuf A. Elnoamany
LSU Master's Theses
Broaching is defined as the uncontrolled release of hydrocarbons to ocean seafloor after a loss of subsurface well control event. Failed attempts to cap the offshore wells undergoing worst case discharge may lead to hydraulic fracture initiation and subsequent propagation, leading to renewed release of hydrocarbon to the seafloor. During the capping stack shut-in process, pressure build-up will occur along the wellbore, exposing locations of possible fracture initiation to overpressurized fluid, such as directly below the casing shoe, and critical points along the well casing. Shall there be enough build-up pressure to exceed the minimum horizontal stress in an exposed …

Convolutional Neural Networks For Deflate Data Encoding Classification Of High Entropy File Fragments, Nehal Ameen
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Data reconstruction is significantly improved in terms of speed and accuracy by reliable data encoding fragment classification. To date, work on this problem has been successful with file structures of low entropy that contain sparse data, such as large tables or logs. Classifying compressed, encrypted, and random data that exhibit high entropy is an inherently difficult problem that requires more advanced classification approaches. We explore the ability of convolutional neural networks and word embeddings to classify deflate data encoding of high entropy file fragments after establishing ground truth using controlled datasets. Our model is designed to either successfully classify file …

Low Impact Development Mitigation For Base Flood Elevation Disparity Between Adjacent Properties, Shaelynn Moore
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Disputes between adjacent property owners in which new development at higher elevation requirements has caused adverse effects in stormwater drainage towards lower, older developments has recently grown in concern. The difference of elevations between properties causes a faster sheet flow effect that bypasses existing drainage paths in the servitude. The goal of this research is to design a low impact development methodology that encourages detention and redirection back toward the shared drainage boundary. Detention is encouraged through subsurface infiltration, storage and re-direction of the flow path. Infiltration trench simulations using EPA’s SWMM software were used to mirror the new LID …

The modern ECU update technology is achieved through the interaction of information between the remote server and the end equipment of the vehicle. Therefore, due to …
Investigation Of Two-Phase Flow Phenomena In Rotating Paper Dryer To Achieve Effective Heat Transfer With Low Energy Consumption, Hamed Abdul Majeed
Investigation Of Two-Phase Flow Phenomena In Rotating Paper Dryer To Achieve Effective Heat Transfer With Low Energy Consumption, Hamed Abdul Majeed
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The paper industry provides important consumer products comprised of paper, tissue, paper board, and pulping. The papermaking process requires a lot of energy, in the form of steam, to dry the paper web in rotating dryers. As steam condenses inside the dryers by releasing heat to the dryer walls, the condensate is removed using either stationary or rotary siphons. Since the condensate is usually at a saturated state, part of the condensate flashes into vapor during the extraction process and becomes difficult to extract. Thus, additional blow-through steam is used to push the condensate out. Since this blow-through steam is …

A Novel Variable Reluctance Resolver With Simplified Winding Arrangement And Adaptive Pi Controller, Bikram Bhandari
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Conventional variable reluctance resolvers require a complicated winding arrangement (i.e., one set of excitation winding and two sets of signal winding), high-frequency ac supply, extra circuit component to demodulate the high frequency induced voltage (i.e., amplitude demodulation circuit), and a resolver-to-digital converter with the PI controller. The thesis presents an innovative design solution to reduce the structural complexity of the resolver and improve the functionality of the controller unit. The proposed novel design simplifies the winding arrangement and eliminates the necessity of the demodulation signal processing circuit component. In addition, the conventional PI controller is being replaced by the adaptive …

Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S (1999-2019). However, predicting when someone will attempt suicide has been nearly impossible. In the modern world, many individuals suffering from mental illness seek emotional support and advice on well-known and easily-accessible social media platforms such as Reddit. While prior artificial intelligence research has demonstrated the ability to extract valuable information from social media on suicidal thoughts and behaviors, these efforts have not considered both severity and temporality of risk. The insights made possible by access to such data have enormous clinical potential - most dramatically envisioned as a trigger …
