One Dimensional Study Of Magnetoplasmadynamic Thrusters For A Potential New Class Of Heavy Ion Drivers For Plasma Jet Driven Magnetoinertial Fusion, Patrick M. Brown

Theses and Dissertations

Plasma Jet Driven Magnetoinertial Fusion (PJMIF) requires high velocity heavy ion drivers in order to compress a magnetized target to fusion conditions. Previous work with heavy ion drivers has revealed sub-par accelerations due to plasma instabilities; thus, it is necessary to investigate new methods of heavy ion plasma acceleration. One such method is Magnetoplasmadynamic (MPD) thrusters. Past studies of these thrusters have been conducted at an initial temperature at or below the energy of full ionization. Here MPD thrusters are investigated using a Godunov type MHD solver with a Harten-Lax van Leer-D (HLLD) flux solving scheme assuming the plasma is …

A Mems Pressure Sensor Using Electrostatic Levitation, Mohammad Mousavi, Mohammad Alzgool, Shahrzad Towfighian Jun 2021

A Mems Pressure Sensor Using Electrostatic Levitation, Mohammad Mousavi, Mohammad Alzgool, Shahrzad Towfighian

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Scholarship

Applying electrostatic levitation force to the initially-closed gap-closing electrodes of our micro-electro- mechanical system (MEMS) creates multi actuation mechanisms, and opens a new world to the MEMS applications.

Electrostatic levitation allows us to measure physical quantities, such as air pressure, by exploiting pull-in instability and releasing. The beam starts from a pulled-in position by applying a voltage difference between two gap-closing electrodes. When enough voltage is applied to the side electrodes, the cantilever beam is released. At the release instant, electrostatic forces, restoring force, and surface force are applied to the cantilever. According to the experimental results of this work, …

Hierarchical Scheduling For Real-Time Periodic Tasks In Symmetric Multiprocessing, Tom Springer, Peiyi Zhao Jun 2021

Hierarchical Scheduling For Real-Time Periodic Tasks In Symmetric Multiprocessing, Tom Springer, Peiyi Zhao

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

In this paper, we present a new hierarchical scheduling framework for periodic tasks in symmetric multiprocessor (SMP) platforms. Partitioned and global scheduling are the two main approaches used by SMP based systems where global scheduling is recommended for overall performance and partitioned scheduling is recommended for hard real-time performance. Our approach combines both the global and partitioned approaches of traditional SMP-based schedulers to provide hard real-time performance guarantees for critical tasks and improved response times for soft real-time tasks. Implemented as part of VxWorks, the results are confirmed using a real-time benchmark application, where response times were improved for soft …

Sound Speed Gradients In Mud, Charles W. Holland Jun 2021

Sound Speed Gradients In Mud, Charles W. Holland

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Various methods have been used to estimate sound speed profiles in mud at the New England Mud Patch. Some of these methods show large sound speed gradients of order 10 s−1. New measurements of the seabed reflection coefficient exhibit an angle of intromission over three octaves in frequency; these data constrain the range of possible sound speed gradient values. The data indicate that sound speed gradients must be quite weak, i.e., much smaller than |10 s−1|. This conclusion is supported by core data which indicate nearly constant porosity in most of the mud layer.

First Order Self-Oscillating Class-D Circuit With Triangular Wave Injection, Matthew J. Carroll Jun 2021

First Order Self-Oscillating Class-D Circuit With Triangular Wave Injection, Matthew J. Carroll

Master's Theses

An investigation into performance improvements to the modulator stage of a class-D amplifier is conducted in this thesis. Two of the standard topologies, namely class-D open-loop pulse-width modulation (PWM), and the improved self-oscillating feedback system are benchmarked against a topology which includes both a hysteretic comparator in a feedback loop and triangle wave injection. Circuit performance is analyzed by comparing how the triangle injection circuit handles known issues with open-loop and self-oscillating circuits. Using this analysis, it is shown that the triangle injection topology offers an improved power supply rejection ratio relative to open-loop PWM and reduces distortion generated by …

Energy Efficient Computing Using Scalable General Purpose Analog Processors, Ethan Paul Palisoc De Guzman Jun 2021

Energy Efficient Computing Using Scalable General Purpose Analog Processors, Ethan Paul Palisoc De Guzman

Master's Theses

Due to fundamental physical limitations, conventional digital circuits have not been able to scale at the pace expected from Moore’s law. In addition, computationally intensive applications such as neural networks and computer vision demand large amounts of energy from digital circuits. As a result, energy efficient alternatives are needed in order to provide continued performance scaling. Analog circuits have many well known benefits: the ability to store more information onto a single wire and efficiently perform mathematical operations such as addition, subtraction, and differential equation solving. However, analog computing also comes with drawbacks such as its sensitivity to process variation …

Comparison Of Hilbert Transform And Derivative Methods For Converting Ecg Data Into Cardioid Plots To Detect Heart Abnormalities, Robert George Goldie Jun 2021

Comparison Of Hilbert Transform And Derivative Methods For Converting Ecg Data Into Cardioid Plots To Detect Heart Abnormalities, Robert George Goldie

Master's Theses

Electrocardiogram (ECG) time-domain signals contain important information about the heart. Several techniques have been proposed for creating a two-dimensional visualization of an ECG, called a Cardioid, that can be used to detect heart abnormalities with computer algorithms. The derivative method is the prevailing technique, which is popular for its low complexity, but it can introduce distortion into the Cardioid plot without additional signal processing. The Hilbert transform is an alternative method which has unity gain and phase shifts the ECG signal by 90 degrees to create the Cardioid plot. However, the Hilbert transform is seldom used and has historically been …

The Car (Confront, Address, Replace) Strategy: An Antiracist Engineering Pedagogy, Amman Fasil Asfaw Jun 2021

The Car (Confront, Address, Replace) Strategy: An Antiracist Engineering Pedagogy, Amman Fasil Asfaw

Master's Theses

The CAR (confront, address, replace) Strategy is an antiracist pedagogy aiming to drive out exclusionary terminology in engineering education.

“Master-slave” terminology is still commonplace in engineering education and industry. However, questions have been raised about the negative impacts of such language. Usage of exclusionary terminology such as “master-slave” in academia can make students—especially those who identify as women and/or Black/African-American—feel uncomfortable, potentially evoking Stereotype Threat (Danowitz, 2020) and/or Curriculum Trauma (Buul, 2020). Indeed, prior research shows that students from a number of backgrounds find non-inclusive terminologies such as “master-slave” to be a major problem (Danowitz, 2020). Currently, women-identifying and gender …

A Github-Based Voice Assistant For Software Developers And Teams, Siriwan Sereesathien Jun 2021

A Github-Based Voice Assistant For Software Developers And Teams, Siriwan Sereesathien

Master's Theses

Software developers and teams typically rely on source code and tasks management tools for their projects. They tend to depend on different platforms such as GitHub, Azure DevOps, Bitbucket, and GitLab for task-tracking, feature-tracking, and bug-tracking to develop and maintain their software repositories. Individually, developers may lose concentration when having to navigate through numerous screens consisting of various platforms to perform daily tasks. Additionally, while in meetings (non-virtual), teams are often separate from their machines and often would have to rely on pure recollection of the tasks and issues related to their work. This can delay the decision-making process and …
