Biological Engineering

Antivenin is listed as one of the World Health Organization’s Essential Medicines1, and as such, it is integral to a modern health care system. Antivenin is currently developed through a process of milking venomous animals, in this case, snakes, concentrating the venom, inoculating animals, and isolating antibodies found in their plasma. The aim of this project is to genetically engineer an organism to overexpress common proteins found in snake venom, thereby lowering the cost of antivenin.

Auto-Locking Knee Brace, Kareena Hudson Jan 2018

Auto-Locking Knee Brace, Kareena Hudson

Electrical and Computer Engineering

The Auto-Locking Knee Brace provides a support system for those with weak or otherwise unreliable knees. It functions by detecting sudden changes in direction and locking the brace into place to help prevent a fall. The knee brace is worn regularly and programmed to be able to identify the difference between normal movement and a fall risk. When a fall risk is detected the knee brace is programmed to lock into place preventing the fall. If a fall is falsely detected, or after stability is regained, the knee brace contains a lock-release mechanism. All the user has to do is …

The Pocket Generator A Self-Charging Backup Battery, Cadin White Jan 2018

The Pocket Generator A Self-Charging Backup Battery, Cadin White

Electrical and Computer Engineering

The purpose of this project was to provide a personal external power source for small electronic devices such as smart phones. The objective was to use triboelectric effects between materials with different electron affinities in order to store energy from mechanical movement. This effect allowed the pocket generator to collect energy as it was carried by a person throughout their daily routine. Directing that energy into a rechargeable battery allowed that energy to be used later for powering a personal electronic device.

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This research investigated the effect of water content in waste cooking oil (WCO) on the performance of a reactive distillation column for biodiesel production via ester-transesterification. A mixture of triolein and oleic acid was used as a WCO model compound. Amberlyst-15 was used to catalyze esterification while CaO was used for transesterification. From Langmuir-Hinshelwood-Hougen-Watson (LHHW) kinetic model taking into account water absorption for esterification of oleic acid (FFA), biodiesel yield was decreased with increasing of water content in WCO feedstocks. On the other hand, the initial rate of transesterification was increased with increase of amount of water in WCO feedstocks …

The process simulation was carried out using commercial Aspen plus 8.0 program and the heat utilization efficiency was evaluated by Aspen energy analyzer software. The process optimal condition sequences were identified by adjusting the separation distillation parameters which include …

Regeneration Of Zinc Particles For Zinc-Air Battery By Spouted-Bed Electrochemical Reactor, Peerawat Puengthaijaroen

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Zinc-air batteries are a promising energy storage system due to its high energy density, low toxicity, and low flammability. They are currently used commercially in low-current devices. Batteries for high-current applications are constructed with zinc particles for increased specific surface areas. Nevertheless, the regeneration of zinc particles from dissolved zincate ions in spent electrolytes has been relatively neglected. We fabricate and study a spouted-bed electrochemical reactor for the regeneration of zinc particles from spent electrolytes. The reactor measures 220 mm high and 130 mm wide with copper as a cathode and stainless steel as an anode. The reactor is separated …

The integrated fuel cell system shows an electrical efficiency of 55.22%, which is higher than a single fuel cell system. Fuel utilization of both fuel cells, SOFC temperature dramatically affect the performance of the integrated system. Four configurations were next proposed …

The removal of MO under UV and visible light were the …

A suitable amount of Ce- and La-doping helped increase carbon tolerance due to oxygen storage capacity and mobility. The solubility limit was found at 50 mol% La in solid solution. At higher La-doping, La2O3 dispersed on the surface and adsorbed …
