Energy-Efficient And Secure Hardware For Internet Of Things (Iot) Devices, Dinesh Kumar Selvakumaran

Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering

Internet of Things (IoT) is a network of devices that are connected through the Internet to exchange the data for intelligent applications. Though IoT devices provide several advantages to improve the quality of life, they also present challenges related to security. The security issues related to IoT devices include leakage of information through Differential Power Analysis (DPA) based side channel attacks, authentication, piracy, etc. DPA is a type of side-channel attack where the attacker monitors the power consumption of the device to guess the secret key stored in it. There are several countermeasures to overcome DPA attacks. However, most of …

Validating Spray Coverage Rate Using Liquid Mass On A Spray Card, Michael P. Sama, Austin M. Weiss, Emma K. Benedict Jan 2018

Validating Spray Coverage Rate Using Liquid Mass On A Spray Card, Michael P. Sama, Austin M. Weiss, Emma K. Benedict

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Validation of agricultural sprayers is important for quantifying as-applied coverage rates under field conditions. The complexity of modern sprayer control systems presents a challenge for precise field validation due to the use of nozzle control technologies, such as pulse width modulation, to meter chemical flow rates at individual nozzles. Non-uniform flow over time may result in local variations at high spatial resolutions that are ignored when estimating as-applied coverage rates across a field. The purpose of this study was to test several methods for estimating the mass of water applied to a water-sensitive paper spray card target using steady-state and …

Application Of Acoustic Emission And Machine Learning To Detect Codling Moth Infested Apples, Mengxing Li, Nader Ekramirad, Ahmed Rady, Akinbode A. Adedeji

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Incidence of codling moth (CM) (Cydia pomonella L.) infestation in apples has been a major concern in North America for decades. CM larvae bore deep into the fruit, making it unmarketable. An effective noninvasive method to detect larvae-infested apples is necessary to ensure that apples are CM-free in post-harvest processing. In this study, a novel approach using an acoustic emission (AE) system and subsequent machine learning methods was applied to classify larvae-infested apples from intact apples. 'GoldRush‘ apples were infested with CM neonates and stored at the same conditions as intact apples. The AE system was used to collect …

Hydraulic Properties Of Baled Switchgrass And Miscanthus, Drew F. Schiavone, Michael D. Montross

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

This study characterized the hydraulic properties within baled switchgrass ( Panicum virgatum L., variety Alamo) and miscanthus (Miscanthus x giganteus), thereby enabling a better understanding of moisture changes in baled biomass during on-farm storage and/or high-solids bioconversion. Fully saturated bales were drained by gravity, and the moisture content was determined over 60 h. The average initial moisture content ranged between 55.9% and 71.9% (w.b.) for switchgrass and between 60.5% and 73.9% (w.b.) for miscanthus bales depending on the dry bale density. As the bale drained by gravity, rapid leaching of water was observed within the first 0.1 h, …

Improving In-Stream Nutrient Routines In Water Quality Models Using Stable Isotope Tracers: A Review And Synthesis, Alexandria K. Jensen, William I. Ford, James F. Fox, Admin Husic

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Water quality models serve as an economically feasible alternative to quantify fluxes of nutrient pollution and to simulate effective mitigation strategies; however, their applicability is often questioned due to broad uncertainties in model structure and parameterization, leading to uncertain outputs. We argue that reduction of uncertainty is partially achieved by integrating stable isotope data streams within the water quality model architecture. This article outlines the use of stable isotopes as a response variable within water quality models to improve the model boundary conditions associated with nutrient source provenance, constrain model parameterization, and elucidate shortcomings in the model structure. To assist …

The Efficacy Of Financial Futures As A Hedging Tool In Electricity Markets, Jim Hanly, Lucia Morales, Damien Cassells Jan 2018

The Efficacy Of Financial Futures As A Hedging Tool In Electricity Markets, Jim Hanly, Lucia Morales, Damien Cassells

Articles

Abstract This paper estimates and applies a risk management strategy for electricity spot exposures using futures hedging. We apply our approach to three of the most actively traded European electricity markets, Nordpool, APXUK and Phelix. We compare both optimal hedging strategies and the hedging effectiveness of these markets for two hedging horizons, weekly and monthly using both Variance and Value at Risk (VaR). Our key finding is that electricity futures can effectively manage risk only for specific time periods when using hedging strategies that have been very successful in financial and other commodity markets. More generally they are ineffective as …

Data Driven Composites: The Challenge And Paths Forwards, Muthu Ram Prabhu Elenchezhian, Vamsee Vadlamudi, Rassel Raihan, Kenneth Reifsnider

Institute of Predictive Performance Methodologies (IPPM-UTARI)-Archive

The concept of “data driven” grew out of the general subject of data analytics, especially in the business world. The classical sequence proposed by Dykes (2010) shown below illustrates the general contents of the concept. Indeed, the idea of “predictive modeling” of the future behavior of a system has strong roots in the business community. In general, for engineering and other fields, the data driven challenge is to use the past with information from the present to predict the future behavior of a system. In turn, the user must pay for collection and processing, hosting and maintenance of the data, …

State Variable Methods Of Assessment, Prognosis, And Control Of Composite And Bonded Structures, Kenneth Reifsnider, Rassel Raihan, Vamsee Vadlamudi, Muthu Ram Prabhu Elenchezhian

Institute of Predictive Performance Methodologies (IPPM-UTARI)-Archive

It is generally recognized that the determination of material state is the baseline foundation for the assessment and prognosis of current and future performance of structural materials in which distributed damage leads to progressive property degradation. Many classes of composite materials, both naturally occurring and engineering designs, are governed by such behavior. However, finding appropriate measureable physical variables to make such assessments, especially for as-manufactured and subsequent real-time assessment and prognosis conditions is challenging. Measurement and analysis of multiple single defect initiation, interaction, and collective effects is the most rigorous current methodology, and is the foundation for certification and quality …

Global Prediction Of Discrete Local Damage Interactions Using Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy, Vamsee Vadlamudi, Muthu Ram Prabhu Elenchezhian, Rauhon Ahmed Shaik, Aishwarya Nandini, Rassel Raihan, Kenneth Reifsnider Jan 2018

Global Prediction Of Discrete Local Damage Interactions Using Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy, Vamsee Vadlamudi, Muthu Ram Prabhu Elenchezhian, Rauhon Ahmed Shaik, Aishwarya Nandini, Rassel Raihan, Kenneth Reifsnider

Institute of Predictive Performance Methodologies (IPPM-UTARI)-Archive

With the increasing demand for composites in many modern applications, it is important to predict the initiation of failure events. Due to the heterogeneous nature of these materials, a single damage mode will not lead to final failure, hence detecting the initiation and growth of a single crack (defect) will not yield accurate predictions of the strength or the material state. It is important to capture the interaction of various damage modes that tend to change the material state leading to initiation of failure. To assess the material state, one needs to determine the appropriate global physical variables that can …

Molecular Dynamics For The Prediction Of The Interfacial Shear Stress And Interface Dielectric Properties Of Carbon Fiber Epoxy Composites, Rajni Chahal, Ashfaq Adnan, Kenneth Reifsnider, Rassel Raihan, Yuan Ting Wu, Vamsee Vadlamudi, Muthu Ram Prabhu Elenchezhian

Institute of Predictive Performance Methodologies (IPPM-UTARI)-Archive

The thermoset epoxy resin Diglycidyl ether of Bisphenol F (EPON 862), crosslinked with the Diethylene Toluene Diamine (DETDA) hardening agent, are utilized as the polymer matrix component in many graphite (carbon fiber) composites. Since it is difficult to experimentally characterize the interfacial region, computational molecular modeling is a necessary tool for understanding the influence of the interfacial molecular structure on bulk-level material properties. The purpose of this research is to evaluate and compare the interfacial shear stress and dipole moment for the pristine carbon fiber composite and the one with the moisture content at the interface. Molecular models are established …

Feed-Forward Compensation Of Non-Minimum Phase Systems, Venkatesh Dudiki Jan 2018

Feed-Forward Compensation Of Non-Minimum Phase Systems, Venkatesh Dudiki

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Due to inherent limitations posed by existence of zeros of a transfer function in the righthalfof the complex plane, known as non-minimum phase zeros, the issue of dealing withsuch zeros is extremely important in control of linear systems. Considerable literatureexists in control theory to try and minimize or eliminate the effect of non-minimum phasezeros. These include pole-zero cancellation, feedforward compensation, among others. These methods are only limited only to stable systems (systems with poles in the left halfof the complex plane); and will fail for systems that are unstable as well as non-minimumphase.This research focuses in designing feedforward compensators for unstable …

Divergent Scaling Of Miniature Excitatory Post-Synaptic Current Amplitudes In Homeostatic Plasticity, Amanda L. Hanes Jan 2018

Divergent Scaling Of Miniature Excitatory Post-Synaptic Current Amplitudes In Homeostatic Plasticity, Amanda L. Hanes

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Synaptic plasticity, the ability of neurons to modulate their inputs in response to changing stimuli, occurs in two forms which have opposing effects on synaptic physiology. Hebbian plasticity induces rapid, persistent changes at individual synapses in a positive feedback manner. Homeostatic plasticity is a negative feedback effect that responds to chronic changes in network activity by inducing opposing, network-wide changes in synaptic strength and restoring activity to its original level. The changes in synaptic strength can be measured as changes in the amplitudes of miniature post-synaptic excitatory currents (mEPSCs). Together, the two forms of plasticity underpin nervous system functions such …

Temperature Robust Longwave Infrared Hyperspectral Change Detection, Nicholas A. Durkee Jan 2018

Temperature Robust Longwave Infrared Hyperspectral Change Detection, Nicholas A. Durkee

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, we develop and evaluate change detection algorithms for longwave infrared (LWIR) hyperspectral imagery. Because measured radiance in the LWIR domain depends on unknown surface temperature, care must be taken to prevent false alarms resulting from in-scene temperature differences that appear as material changes. We consider fewer variables. Examples using synthetic and measured data quantify the computational complexity of the proposed methods and demonstrate orders of magnitude reduction in false alarm rates relative to existing methods. Four strategies to mitigate this effect. In the first, pre-processing via traditional temperatureemissivity separation yields approximately temperature-invariant emissivity vectors for use in …

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Incident Command System provides a framework for commanders to manage an incident. However, maintaining good situation awareness in an emergency situation is often challenging to the Incident Commander. Stress may result in task fixation which may cause the commander to miss critical information and can eventually lead to poor decisions. The proposed augmented decision support system, with an integrated knowledge base, enhances the commander's decision making and situation awareness by presenting the information that may have been missed. The system has been evaluated to investigate its utility in chemical hazard scenarios. The system was used by experienced Incident Commanders to …

Building An Abstract-Syntax-Tree-Oriented Symbolic Execution Engine For Php Programs, Jin Huang Jan 2018

Building An Abstract-Syntax-Tree-Oriented Symbolic Execution Engine For Php Programs, Jin Huang

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents the design, implementation, and evaluation of an abstract-syntax-tree-oriented symbolic execution engine for the PHP programming language. As a symbolic execution engine, our system emulate the execution of a PHP program by assuming that all inputs are with symbolic rather than concrete values. While our system inherits the basic definition of symbolic execution, it fundamentally differs from existing symbolic execution implementations that mainly leverage intermediate representation (IRs) to operate. Specifically, our system directly takes the abstract syntax tree (AST) of a program as input and subsequently interprets this AST. Performing symbolic execution using AST offers unique advantages. First, …

Slim Embedding Layers For Recurrent Neural Language Models, Zhongliang Li Jan 2018

Slim Embedding Layers For Recurrent Neural Language Models, Zhongliang Li

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Recurrent neural language (RNN) models are the state-of-the-art method for language modeling. When the vocabulary size is large, the space taken to store the model parameters becomes the bottleneck for the use of these type of models. We introduce a simple space compression method that stochastically shares the structured parameters at both the input and output embedding layers of RNN models to significantly reduce the size of model parameters, but still compactly represents the original input and the output embedding layers. The method is easy to implement and tune. Experiments on several data sets show that the new method achieves …

Fpga-Based Ir Localization Sensor, Samuel I. Susanto Jan 2018

Fpga-Based Ir Localization Sensor, Samuel I. Susanto

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Pursuit-evasion scenarios are common in both natural and man-made systems. Often times, the pursuer and evader maneuver in response to each others actions using relative information based on the geometry of the agents and potential obstacles within the environment. The pursuer needs the target's bearing angle in order to plan a trajectory or path to capture it. We propose an FPGA-based infrared sensor array to detect up to 6 agents' bearing angles simultaneously. The final output of the sensor is the bearing angle of other agents. The sensor was tested and validated experimentally. Implementing the sensor and transmitter pair on …

A Comparative Case Study Of Reflection Seismic Imaging Method, Moones Alamooti Jan 2018

A Comparative Case Study Of Reflection Seismic Imaging Method, Moones Alamooti

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Reflection seismology is the most comand effective method to gather information on the earth interior. The quality of seismic images is highly variable depending on the complexity of the underground and on how seismic data are acquired and processed. One of the crucial steps in this process, especially in layered sequences with complicated structure, is the time and/or depth migration of seismic data. The primary purpose of the migration is to increase the spatial resolution of seismic images by repositioning the recorded seismic signal back to its original point of reflection in time/space, which enhances information about the complex structure. …

The Stirling engines are attractive alternative for combined heat and power (CHP) systems, especially for high efficiency power generation using different heat sources. The hot side heat exchanger or heater head (HH) is one of the indispensable components of Stirling engines which transfers the heat from outside of the system into the working fluid. For development of a low cost, highly efficient and reliable CHP system, a novel HH has been designed and additively manufactured from Inconel 625. For the investigation of flow loss and heat transfer through this Stirling engine heater head, two benchtop test rigs were designed, developed, …

Study Of Biomimetic Micro And Macro Structures For Drag Reduction, Justin S. Schrout Jan 2018

Study Of Biomimetic Micro And Macro Structures For Drag Reduction, Justin S. Schrout

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The ever increasing demand for global travel coupled with increasing costs of fuels have prompted many researchers to study new methods to save fuel to make travel more efficient. One of the proverbial low-hanging fruits for fuel efficiency is aerodynamic drag reduction. Simple changes in the shape or placement of structures on the surface of different types of vehicles have been shown to increase fuel efficiency by reducing drag (e.g., add-on lower and aft wake fairings on tractor trailers which have seen a tremendous rise in popularity on US highways in recent years). Areas of interest in drag reduction have …

Electrowetting Using A Microfluidic Kelvin Water Dropper, Elias Yazdanshenas, Qiang Tang, Xiaoyu Zhang

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

The Kelvin water dropper is an electrostatic generator that can generate high voltage electricity through water dripping. A conventional Kelvin water dropper converts the gravitational potential energy of water into electricity. Due to its low current output, Kelvin water droppers can only be used in limited cases that demand high voltage. In the present study, microfluidic Kelvin water droppers (MKWDs) were built in house to demonstrate a low-cost but accurately controlled miniature device for high voltage generation. The performance of the MKWDs was characterized using different channel diameters and flow rates. The best performed MKWD was then used to conduct …

Semiconductor Design And Manufacturing Interplay To Achieve Higher Yields At Reduced Costs Using Smart Techniques, Ankush Bharati Oberai

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since the outset of IC Semiconductor market there has been a gap between its design and manufacturing communities. This gap continued to grow as the device geometries started to shrink and the manufacturing processes and tools got more complex. This gap lowered the manufacturing yield, leading to higher cost of ICs and delay in their time to market. It also impacted performance of the ICs, impacting the overall functionality of the systems they were integrated in. However, in the recent years there have been major efforts to bridge the gap between design and manufacturing using software solutions by providing closer …

Cavity-Coupled Plasmonic Systems For Enhanced Light-Matter Interactions, Abraham Vazquez-Guardado Jan 2018

Cavity-Coupled Plasmonic Systems For Enhanced Light-Matter Interactions, Abraham Vazquez-Guardado

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Light-matter interaction is a pivotal effect that involves the synergetic interplay of electromag- netic fields with fundamental particles. In this regard localized surface plasmons (LSP) arise from coherent interaction of the electromagnetic field with the collective oscillation of free electrons in confined sub-wavelength environments. Their most attractive properties are strong field en- hancements at the near field, highly inhomogeneous, peculiar temporal and spatial distributions and unique polarization properties. LSP systems also offer a unique playground for fundamental electromagnetic physics where micro-scale systemic properties can be studied in the macro-scale. These important properties and opportunities are brought up in this work …

A Reliable Data Provenance And Privacy Preservation Architecture For Business-Driven Cyber-Physical Systems Using Blockchain, Xueping Liang, Sachin Shetty, Deepak K. Tosh, Juan Zhao, Danyi Li, Jihong Liu Jan 2018

A Reliable Data Provenance And Privacy Preservation Architecture For Business-Driven Cyber-Physical Systems Using Blockchain, Xueping Liang, Sachin Shetty, Deepak K. Tosh, Juan Zhao, Danyi Li, Jihong Liu

VMASC Publications

Cyber-physical systems (CPS) including power systems, transportation, industrial control systems, etc. support both advanced control and communications among system components. Frequent data operations could introduce random failures and malicious attacks or even bring down the whole system. The dependency on a central authority increases the risk of single point of failure. To establish an immutable data provenance scheme for CPS, the authors adopt blockchain and propose a decentralized architecture to assure data integrity. In business-driven CPS, end users are required to share their personal information with multiple third parties. To prevent data leakage and preserve user privacy, the authors isolate …
