A Dynamic Multiple Stage, Multiple Objective Optimization Model With An Application To A Wastewater Treatment System, Prashant Tarun
A Dynamic Multiple Stage, Multiple Objective Optimization Model With An Application To A Wastewater Treatment System, Prashant Tarun
Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Decision-making for complex dynamic systems involves multiple objectives. Various methods balance the tradeoffs of multiple objectives, the most popular being weighted-sum and constraint-based methods. Under convexity assumptions an optimal solution to the constraint-based problem can also be obtained by solving the weighted-sum problems, and all Pareto optimal solutions can be obtained by systematically varying the weights or constraint limits. The challenge is to generate meaningful weights or constraint limits that yield practical solutions. In this dissertation, we utilize the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and develop a methodology to generate weight vectors successively for a dynamic multiple stage, multiple objective (MSMO) …

Vision-Based Navigation For Electromagnetic Formation Flight, Nasir Ghazi Hariri
Theses and Dissertations
The concept of using Satellite Formation Flight (SFF) reveals various benefits for a space mission. However, relying on a consumable actuation system to maintain a desired relative position and orientation between flying satellites has hindered its practicality and feasibility for long duration missions. By adapting the SFF concept such that electromagnetic actuation mechanism is employed, the concept of Electromagnetic Formation Flight (EMFF) offers a great potential to validate such a technology. EMFF provides interacting forces and torques between flying satellites to maintain their relative position within a formation using its electromagnetic actuation capabilities. This dissertation demonstrates the possibilities of utilizing …

Analysis And Classification Of 3-D Printed Collagen-Bioglass Matrices For Cellular Growth Utilizing Artificial Neural Networks, Trevor Schmitt
Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: Recent advances have shown the influence of biomimetic design on modulation of the extracellular matrix (ECM) and the role stiffness of it plays in cellular behavior. 2-D models for cellular growth poorly recapitulate the natural environment of cells, whereas application of a 3-D ECM model allows for a more biomimetic design for modeling cellular behavior. Integration of 45S5 Bioglass provides and osteostimulatory mineral component to these 3-D models, allowing for better mimicry of orthopedic design, affecting the mechanical and physiochemical properties of the ECM and leading to an increase in osteogenic behavior. 3-D Bioprinting allows for custom fabrication of …

Mindful: A Novel Virtual System Migration Decision-Making Framework For Automated Cyber-Resiliency, Nicholas James Lowing
Theses and Dissertations
Virtual system migration has revolutionized modern computing. As an advantageous byproduct of virtualization, virtual system migration has allowed for cheaper, more robust cloud management. The selection of a destination host during migration is a key component of migration management. However, there is currently no state-of-the-art, standardized framework for making this decision. Previous work related to automated load balancing is plentiful, but when load balancing is not the primary focus of the cloud management strategy there is a lack of research. We focus on this case, where virtual systems are no longer moved based on some predefined optimization pattern, but rather …

Estimation Of Knee Kinematics Using Non-Monotonic Nanocomposite High-Deflection Strain Gauges, Adin Douglas Martineau
Estimation Of Knee Kinematics Using Non-Monotonic Nanocomposite High-Deflection Strain Gauges, Adin Douglas Martineau
Theses and Dissertations
Human knee kinematics, especially during gait, are an important analysis tool. The current "gold standard" for kinematics measurement is a multi-camera, marker-based motion capture system with 3D position tracking. These systems are accurate but expensive and their use is limited to a confined laboratory environment. High deflection strain gauges (HDSG) are a novel class of sensors that have the potential to measure kinematics and can be inexpensive, low profile, and are not limited to measurements within a calibrated volume. However, many HDSG sensors can have a non-linear and non-monotonic response. This thesis explores using a nanocomposite HDSG sensor system for …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper provides a fog-based approach to solving the traffic light optimization problem which utilizes the Adaptive Traffic Signal Control (ATSC) model. ATSC systems demand the ability to strictly reflect real-time traffic state. The proposed fog computing framework, namely FogFly, aligns with this requirement by its natures in location-awareness, low latency and affordability to the changes in traffic conditions. As traffic data is updated timely and processed at fog nodes deployed close to data sources (i.e., vehicles at intersections) traffic light cycles can be optimized efficiently while virtualized resources available at network edges are efficiently utilized. Evaluation results show that …

Exponent: High Speed Cubesat Radio, Dana Sorensen
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Software Defined Radios (SDR) are limited by their usable bandwidth, which restricts how quickly they can transmit or receive data. The High Speed CubeSat Radio (HSCR) is capable of transmitting and receiving higher bandwidth signals by combining the bandwidths of several individual SDR transceivers. The HSCR performs phase correction to seamlessly stitch the bandwidths of each individual SDR into a single larger bandwidth.
By increasing the number of SDRs inside the HSCR, the bandwidth of the overall system will increase. This increase in bandwidth is limited only by the speed of the processing unit in working with received or transmitting …
Planar Linear Ion Traps With Microscale Radii For Portable Mass Spectrometry, Trevor Keith Decker
Planar Linear Ion Traps With Microscale Radii For Portable Mass Spectrometry, Trevor Keith Decker
Theses and Dissertations
Radio frequency (RF) ion traps based on the quadrupole device developed by Paul and Steinwedel utilize a dynamic electric field to spatially confine the trajectory of charged particles and may be employed as mass spectrometers by selectively ejecting trapped molecules based on the mass to charge ratio. 5d Grain Boundary Characterization From Ebsd Microscopy, Akash Savio Amalaraj
Theses and Dissertations
Knowledge of the full 5-degree Grain Boundary Character Distribution (GBCD) is vital to understanding properties, such as gas diffusivity, that are dominated by grain boundary character. Surface characterization techniques, such as Electron Backscattered diffraction (EBSD), can provide only 4 of the 5 GB characteristics (the rotation between the neighboring grains, and the trace of the GB on the surface). The inclination of the GB in the direction normal to the surface is not known. A previous study indicated that the GB inclination could be recovered by correlating the Electron Backscattered patterns (EBSPs) of sample points near the GB with EBSPs …
