Optimal Wavelength Selection For Optical Spectroscopy Of Hemoglobin And Water Within A Simulated Light-Scattering Tissue, Mikael Marois, Stephen L. Jacques, Keith D. Paulsen Jan 2018

Optimal Wavelength Selection For Optical Spectroscopy Of Hemoglobin And Water Within A Simulated Light-Scattering Tissue, Mikael Marois, Stephen L. Jacques, Keith D. Paulsen

Dartmouth Scholarship

An algorithm that selects optimal wavelengths for spectral fitting of diffuse light reflectance spectra using a nonnegative least squares method is presented. Oxyhemoglobin, deoxyhemoglobin, and water are considered representative absorbers, but the approach is not constrained or limited by absorber selection provided native basis spectra are available. The method removes wavelengths iteratively from a scattering-modulated absorption matrix by maximizing the product of its singular values and offers considerable improvements over previously published wavelength selection schemes. Resulting wavelength selections are valid for a broad range of optical properties and yield lower RMS errors than other wavelength combinations. The method is easily …

Investigation Of Morphological Changes In Small Coastal Rivers During Flood, Tanzina Afrin Jan 2018

Investigation Of Morphological Changes In Small Coastal Rivers During Flood, Tanzina Afrin

LSU Master's Theses

The delivery of fluvial sediment to coastal margins is one of the major concerns for river and coastal morphodynamics. Relevant research has primarily focused on large rivers that transport substantial sediment load and thus are responsible for building deltaic landscapes. However, less research is concentrated on small coastal rivers. A need exists to better understand the sediment dynamics in small coastal rivers that have different backwater regimes than their larger counterparts. The main objective of this research was to examine the influence of backwater on the morphodynamics of a small coastal meandering river during a large flood event. The investigation …

Carbon Nanofibers (Cnfs) Supported Cobalt-Nickel Sulfide (Coni 2 S 4) Nanoparticles Hybrid Anode For High Performance Lithium Ion Capacitor, Ajay Jagadale, Xuan Joe Zhou, Douglas Blaisdell, Sen Yang

Electrical & Computer Engineering Publications

Lithium ion capacitors possess an ability to bridge the gap between lithium ion battery and supercapacitor. The main concern of fabricating lithium ion capacitors is poor rate capability and cyclic stability of the anode material which uses sluggish faradaic reactions to store an electric charge. Herein, we have fabricated high performance hybrid anode material based on carbon nanofibers (CNFs) and cobalt-nickel sulfide (CoNi2S4) nanoparticles via simple electrospinning and electrodeposition methods. Porous and high conducting CNF@CoNi2S4 electrode acts as an expressway network for electronic and ionic diffusion during charging-discharging processes. The effect of anode to cathode mass ratio on the performance …

Global Anthropogenic Phosphorus Loads To Freshwater And Associated Grey Water Footprints And Water Pollution Levels: A High-Resolution Global Study, Mesfin Mekonnen, Arjen Y. Hoekstra

Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute: Faculty Publications

We estimate the global anthropogenic phosphorus (P) loads to freshwater and the associated grey water footprints (GWFs) for the period 2002–2010, at a spatial resolution of 5 3 5 arc min, and com- pare the GWF per river basin to runoff to assess the P-related water pollution level (WPL). The global anthro- pogenic P load to freshwater systems from both diffuse and point sources is estimated at 1.5 Tg/yr. More than half of this total load was in Asia, followed by Europe (19%) and Latin America and the Caribbean (13%). The domestic sector contributed 54% to the total, agriculture 38%, …

Superimposed Signaling Inspired Channel Estimation In Full-Duplex Systems, Abbas Koohian, Hani Mehrpouyan, Ali A. Nasir, Salman Durrani, Steven D. Blostein

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Residual self-interference (SI) cancellation in the digital baseband is an important problem in full-duplex (FD) communication systems. In this paper, we propose a new technique for estimating the SI and communication channels in a FD communication system, which is inspired from superimposed signaling. In our proposed technique, we add a constant real number to each constellation point of a conventional modulation constellation to yield asymmetric shifted modulation constellations with respect to the origin. We show mathematically that such constellations can be used for bandwidth efficient channel estimation without ambiguity. We propose an expectation maximization (EM) estimator for use with the …

Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments

In this paper, we discuss the process we are using in the design and implementation of a tool to improve the situation awareness of cyberattacks in the power grid. We provide details of the steps we have taken to date and describe the steps that still need to be accomplished. The focus of this work is to provide situation awareness of the power grid to staff from different, non-overlapping roles in an electrical transmission organization in order to facilitate an understanding of a possible occurrence of a cyberattack. Our approach follows a user-centered design process and includes determining the types …

Deep Gaze Velocity Analysis During Mammographic Reading For Biometric Identification Of Radiologists, Hong-Jun Yoon, Folami Alamudun, Kathy Hudson, Garnetta Morin-Ducote, Georgia Tourassi

Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments

Several studies have confirmed that the gaze velocity of the human eye can be utilized as a behavioral biometric or personalized biomarker. In this study, we leverage the local feature representation capacity of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for eye gaze velocity analysis as the basis for biometric identification of radiologists performing breast cancer screening. Using gaze data collected from 10 radiologists reading 100 mammograms of various diagnoses, we compared the performance of a CNN-based classification algorithm with two deep learning classifiers, deep neural network and deep belief network, and a previously presented hidden Markov model classifier. The study showed that …

Analytical Approaches To Improve Accuracy In Solving The Protein Topology Problem, Kamal Al Nasr, Feras Yousef, Ruba Jebril, Christopher Jones

Computer Science Faculty Research

To take advantage of recent advances in genomics and proteomics it is critical that the three-dimensional physical structure of biological macromolecules be determined. Cryo-Electron Microscopy (cryo-EM) is a promising and improving method for obtaining this data, however resolution is often not sufficient to directly determine the atomic scale structure. Despite this, information for secondary structure locations is detectable. De novo modeling is a computational approach to modeling these macromolecular structures based on cryo-EM derived data. During de novo modeling a mapping between detected secondary structures and the underlying amino acid sequence must be identified. DP-TOSS (Dynamic Programming for determining the …

Microfluidic Device And Method Using Double Anodic Bonding, Stephen Forrest, Gregory Mcgraw, Siddharth Harikrishna Mohan, Diane Peters

Mechanical Engineering Patents

A microfluidic device for use with a microfluidic delivery system, such as an organic vapor jet printing device, includes a glass layer that is directly bonded to a microfabricated die and a metal plate via a double anodic bond. The double anodic bond is formed by forming a first anodic bond at an interface of the microfabricated die and the glass layer, and forming a second anodic bond at an interface of the metal plate and the glass layer, where the second anodic bond is formed using a voltage that is lower than the voltage used to form the first …

Universality Of Fast Quenches From The Conformal Perturbation Theory, Anatoly Dymarsky, Michael Smolkin Jan 2018

Universality Of Fast Quenches From The Conformal Perturbation Theory, Anatoly Dymarsky, Michael Smolkin

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We consider global quantum quenches, a protocol when a continuous field theoretic system in the ground state is driven by a homogeneous time-dependent external interaction. When the typical inverse time scale of the interaction is much larger than all relevant scales except for the UV-cutoff the system’s response exhibits universal scaling behavior. We provide both qualitative and quantitative explanations of this universality and argue that physics of the response during and shortly after the quench is governed by the conformal perturbation theory around the UV fixed point. We proceed to calculate the response of one and two-point correlation functions confirming …

Novel Approaches For Mutual Coupling Reduction Among Vertical And Planar Monopole Elements, Ayman Abbosh Isaac Jan 2018

Novel Approaches For Mutual Coupling Reduction Among Vertical And Planar Monopole Elements, Ayman Abbosh Isaac

Theses and Dissertations

Modern wireless systems such as 4G LTE-A, RFID, Wi-Fi, WiMAX, and GPS utilize miniaturized antenna array elements to improve performance and reliability through diversity and increase throughput using spatial multiplexing schemes of MIMO systems. One original contribution in this thesis is to significantly reduce the complexity of traditional design approaches targeting mutual coupling reductions such as metamaterials, defected ground plane structures, soft electromagnetic surfaces using novel design alternatives. A decoupling network is proposed, which consists of a rectangular metallic ring along with two tuning strips printed on a dielectric substrate, surrounding a two-element monopole antenna array fed by a coplanar …

Metastable Ar(1s5) Density Dependence On Pressure And Argon-Helium Mixture In A High Pressure Radio Frequency Dielectric Barrier Discharge, Daniel J. Emmons, David E. Weeks, Ben Eshel, Glen P. Perram Jan 2018

Metastable Ar(1s5) Density Dependence On Pressure And Argon-Helium Mixture In A High Pressure Radio Frequency Dielectric Barrier Discharge, Daniel J. Emmons, David E. Weeks, Ben Eshel, Glen P. Perram

Faculty Publications

Simulations of an α-mode radio frequency dielectric barrier discharge are performed for varying mixtures of argon and helium at pressures ranging from 200 to 500 Torr using both zero and one-dimensional models. Metastable densities are analyzed as a function of argon-helium mixture and pressure to determine the optimal conditions, maximizing metastable density for use in an optically pumped rare gas laser. Argon fractions corresponding to the peak metastable densities are found to be pressure dependent, shifting from approximately 15% Ar in He at 200 Torr to 10% at 500 Torr. A decrease in metastable density is observed as pressure …

Comparing Machine Learning And Decision Making Approaches To Forecast Long Lead Monthly Rainfall: The City Of Vancouver, Canada, Zahra Zahmatkesh, Erfan Goharian

Faculty Publications

Estimating maximum possible rainfall is of great value for flood prediction and protection, particularly for regions, such as Canada, where urban and fluvial floods from extreme rainfalls have been known to be a major concern. In this study, a methodology is proposed to forecast real-time rainfall (with one month lead time) using different number of spatial inputs with different orders of lags. For this purpose, two types of models are used. The first one is a machine learning data driven-based model, which uses a set of hydrologic variables as inputs, and the second one is an empirical-statistical model that employs …

A 2-D Finite Element Modeling And Simulation Of 3-Roll Forming, Wenbo Zhao Jan 2018

A 2-D Finite Element Modeling And Simulation Of 3-Roll Forming, Wenbo Zhao

LSU Master's Theses

Medium to large diameter carbon steel pipes are widely used in various applications such as gas and fluid transportation, tunnels construction and building construction. Based on manufacturing techniques and characteristics, they are mainly categorized into three categories: Seamless pipe, Butt-welded pipe and Spiral pipe. The forming of butt-welded and spiral pipe is often performed by a technique called 3-roller bending. While traditional trial-and-error method is costly, the geometry complexity, along with material nonlinearity makes exact theoretical analysis difficult unless heavy simplified assumptions are made. While the forming parameters in the 3-roller forming process of butt-welded pipe has been studied in …

Trust In Visualization (And What It Has To Do With Theory), Thomas Wischgoll

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

There are different issues with trust involved when working with domain experts to visualize their data. There may be limitations with the data that require special precautions, such as sensitivity or security limitations. It may have taken a lot of effort to collect or create the data so that a certain level of trust is required for the domain expert to share the data. At the same time, the domain expert needs to be able to trust in the final visualization results. This presentation discusses these issues with trust and what requirements for a theoretical foundation this results in. Furthermore, …

Accurate Location Of Evolving Faults On Transmission Lines Using Sparse Wide Area Measurements, Xiangqing Jiao, Yuan Liao Jan 2018

Accurate Location Of Evolving Faults On Transmission Lines Using Sparse Wide Area Measurements, Xiangqing Jiao, Yuan Liao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In electric power systems, not all fault conditions remain unchanged during faults. An evolving fault has one characteristic initially and changes to a different condition subsequently. Locating evolving faults is challenging due to the change in fault type shortly after the fault initiation. This paper presents a new approach for estimating the locations of evolving faults on transmission lines. By using sparse wide area voltage measurements, this method is able to accurately locate evolving faults without requiring measurements from either end of the faulted line. There is no need to detect whether a fault is an evolving fault or not. …

High-temperature (150–170 °C) pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass with mineral acids is well established for xylan breakdown. Fe2+ is known to be a cocatalyst of this process although kinetics of its action remains unknown. The present work addresses the effect of ferrous ion concentration on sugar yield and degradation product formation from corn stover for the entire two-step treatment, including the subsequent enzymatic cellulose hydrolysis. The feedstock was impregnated with 0.5% acid and 0.75 mM iron cocatalyst, which was found to be optimal in preliminary experiments. The detailed kinetic data of acid pretreatment, with and without iron, was satisfactorily modelled …

Exploring The Determinants Of Vulnerable Road Users’ Crash Severity In State Roads, Álvaro Caviedes Jan 2018

Exploring The Determinants Of Vulnerable Road Users’ Crash Severity In State Roads, Álvaro Caviedes

PSU Transportation Seminars

Part of the Student Presentations from TRB

Pedestrians and bicyclists are the most vulnerable road users and suffer the most severe consequences when crashes take place. An extensive literature is available for crash severity in terms of driver safety, but fewer studies have explored non-motorized users’ crash severity. Furthermore, most research efforts have examined pedestrian and bicyclist crash severity in urban areas. This study focuses on state roads (mostly outside major urban areas) and aims to identify contributing risk factors of fatal and severe crashes involving pedestrians and bicyclists in state roads. The results seem to suggest that besides improvements …

Time Management In A Co-Housed Social Rodent Species (Arvicanthis Niloticus), Alexandra Castillo-Ruiz, Premananda Indic, William J. Schwartz

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Sociality has beneficial effects on fitness, and timing the activities of animals may be critical. Social cues could influence daily rhythmic activities via direct effects on the circadian clock or on processes that bypass it (masking), but these possibilities remain incompletely addressed. We investigated the effects of social cues on the circadian body temperature (Tb) rhythms in pairs of co-housed and isolated grass rats, Arvicanthis niloticus (a social species), in constant darkness (DD). Cohabitation did not induce synchronization of circadian Tb rhythms. However, socio-sexual history did affect circadian properties: accelerating the clock in sexually experienced males and females in DD …

Peri-Elastodynamic Simulations Of Guided Ultrasonic Lamb Waves In Smart Structure With Surface Mounted Pzt, Subir Patra, Hossain Ahmed, Sourav Banerjee

Faculty Publications

Peridynamic based elastodynamic computation tool named Peri-elastodynamics is proposed herein to simulate the three-dimensional (3D) Lamb wave modes in materials for the first time. Peri-elastodynamics is a nonlocal meshless approach which is a scale-independent generalized technique to visualize the acoustic and ultrasonic waves in plate-like structure, micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) and nanodevices for their respective characterization. In this article, the characteristics of the fundamental Lamb wave modes are simulated in a sample plate-like structure. Lamb wave modes are generated using a surface mounted piezoelectric (PZT) transducer which is actuated from the top surface. The proposed generalized Peri-elastodynamics method is not only …

Mechanical And Electrical Characterization Of Carbon Fiber/Bucky Paper/Zinc Oxide Hybrid Composites, Suma Ayyagari, Marwan Al-Haik, Virginie Rollin

Publications

The quest for multifunctional carbon fiber reinforced composites (CFRPs) expedited the use of several nano reinforcements such as zinc oxide nanorods (ZnO) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Zinc oxide is a semi-conductor with good piezoelectric and pyroelectric properties. These properties could be transmitted to CFRPs when a nanophase of ZnO is embedded within CFRPs. In lieu of ZnO nanorods, Bucky paper comprising mat of CNTs could be sandwiched in-between composite laminae to construct a functionally graded composite with enhanced electrical conductivities. In this study, different configurations of hybrid composites based on carbon fibers with different combinations of ZnO nanorods and Bucky …

A Phase Change Material For Reconfigurable Circuit Applications, Dushyant Tomer, Ronald A. Coutu Jr.

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The large resistance contrast between amorphous and crystalline states of phase change materials (PCM) makes them a promising candidate for data-storage applications. Germanium telluride (GeTe), an early member of the PCM family, shows ~6 orders of magnitude difference in resistivity upon phase transition. In this paper, two different heating methods, direct (Joule) and indirect thermal heating, were applied to induce a phase transition in vertical and horizontal GeTe resistors. In the electrical measurements, it was observed that thermal heating produces a two orders of magnitude larger difference in GeTe resistivity that the Joule heating, irrespective of the resistor’s geometry and …

Image-Based Modeling Of Flow Through Porous Media: Development Of Multiscale Techniques For The Pore Level, Timothy Wayne Thibodeaux Jan 2018

Image-Based Modeling Of Flow Through Porous Media: Development Of Multiscale Techniques For The Pore Level, Timothy Wayne Thibodeaux

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Increasingly, imaging technology allows porous media problems to be modeled at microscopic and sub-microscopic levels with finer resolution. However, the physical domain size required to be representative of the media prohibits comprehensive micro-scale simulation. A hybrid or multiscale approach is necessary to overcome this challenge. In this work, a technique was developed for determining the characteristic scales of porous materials, and a multiscale modeling methodology was developed to better understand the interaction/dependence of phenomena occurring at different microscopic scales. The multiscale method couples microscopic simulations at the pore and sub-pore scales. Network modeling is a common pore-scale technique which employs …
