Phasor Measurement Unit Testing And Characterization, Joe Perigo Apr 2018

Phasor Measurement Unit Testing And Characterization, Joe Perigo

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

The power grid is a complex system composed of many different elements. Knowledge of electrical waveform content across the grid is key to managing power and maintaining stability. Electrical waveforms can be represented mathematically as time-varying phasors. Electrical phasors give information pertaining to the magnitude of the waveform as well as the phase relationship of the waveform to a reference. A Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) is a device that is installed at a node on the power grid and measures electrical phasors. The potential of near real time phasor information is powerful and has driven PMU application technology forward at …

Uav-Based Geotechnical Modeling And Mapping Of An Inaccessible Underground Site, Elizabeth Anne Russell Apr 2018

Uav-Based Geotechnical Modeling And Mapping Of An Inaccessible Underground Site, Elizabeth Anne Russell

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

Digital photogrammetry is becoming a more common method used for mapping geological and structural rock mass features in underground mining. The issue of capturing geological and structural data in inaccessible, unsupported areas of mines remains even when utilizing terrestrial photogrammetric methods; thus, geotechnical models of mines are left with incomplete datasets. Large unsupported underground voids, like stopes, have the potential to cause major failures, but by filling in the geotechnical data gaps in inaccessible areas, potential failures can be predicted through kinematic analysis of the area’s mapped discontinuities. Implementation of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in underground mines and recent advances …

High Fidelity Kinetic Model For Flotation: Applications To Rare Earth Elements And Copper/Molybdenum Separations, Richard Ladouceur

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

A high-fidelity kinetic model was developed to identify and elucidate the effects of varying principle froth flotation parameters on the sub-processes that occur within and between the flotation zones. Whereas traditional models fail to adequately address froth recovery and recovery by entrainment, the high-fidelity model defines these phenomena based on an improved understanding of the pulp/froth interface. Solution chemistry considerations that govern rare earth mineral separation by flotation were identified, characterized, and optimized. Application of novel surfactants such H205 and salicylhydroxamic acid (collectors) and dimethyl glycol monobutyl ether (depressant) was evaluated to define optimal flotation conditions. The effect of pressure …

Investigations Of Solid-State Sintering Behavior Of Binary Refractory Metal Oxide Systems, Maureen Chorney

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

Refractory metals are commonly alloyed for improved corrosion resistance, thermal stability, and strength. In service, these alloys form highly stable oxides under mildly oxidizing conditions at relatively low temperatures. In order to recycle these materials, high temperature electrochemical processing is required to reduce the refractory metal oxides. To abet experimental evaluation of the electrochemical reduction process under development at the Idaho National Laboratory, binary mixtures of selected refractory metal oxide powders were sintered to produce cathode pellets, which could be suspended in the molten salt electrolyte during reduction experiments. Preparatory literature review revealed a paucity of published information relative to …

Application Of Huffman Data Compression Algorithm In Hashing Computation, Lakshmi Narasimha Devulapalli Venkata,

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Cryptography is the art of protecting information by encrypting the original message into an unreadable format. A cryptographic hash function is a hash function which takes an arbitrary length of the text message as input and converts that text into a fixed length of encrypted characters which is infeasible to invert. The values returned by the hash function are called as the message digest or simply hash values. Because of its versatility, hash functions are used in many applications such as message authentication, digital signatures, and password hashing [Thomsen and Knudsen, 2005].

The purpose of this study is to apply …

Developing Knowledge Management Strategies, Bryan Gibson, Candice Y. Wallace, Steven Douglas Kreis

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Retirements and other staff changes have led to a loss of institutional knowledge across public agencies. These changing workforce dynamics have highlighted the study of knowledge management, and how organizations can best retain their core knowledge bases. Key to understanding knowledge management is how organizations have approached the issue and the most effective methods and processes they have used to retain, store, and disseminate knowledge. Part of the knowledge management discussion includes core competencies, or what basic knowledge and skills are essential to an organization’s mission. Also, considering the impacts of outsourcing on public employment, is another key to understanding …

A Straightforward Updating Criterion For 2-D/3-D Hybrid Discontinuous Galerkin Time-Domain Method Controlling Comparative Error, Wending Mai, Ping Li, C. G. Li, Ming Jiang, Wenqu Hao, Lijun Jiang, Jun Hu Apr 2018

A Straightforward Updating Criterion For 2-D/3-D Hybrid Discontinuous Galerkin Time-Domain Method Controlling Comparative Error, Wending Mai, Ping Li, C. G. Li, Ming Jiang, Wenqu Hao, Lijun Jiang, Jun Hu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The 2-D/3-D hybrid discontinuous Galerkin time-domain (DGTD) method is efficient to deal with structures that contain elements capable of 2-D simplification. To separate 2-D elements from 3-D ones, a criterion for approximation error manipulation is required. However, in the latest reported technique, this kind of criterion is derived from the causality principle and the Courant-Freidrichs-Lewy constraint, and thus is indirect and inessential to 2-D simplification. As a result, some elements capable of 2-D simplification are unnecessarily flagged as 3-D ones, deteriorating efficiency dramatically. Moreover, controlling absolute error, the traditional criterion is not flexible for structures with complex mode distribution. In …

Microstructural analysis and micro-hardness measurements were performed on different planes of 316L stainless steel fabricated by direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) technique. A fine cellular network was observed within the steel microstructure, where morphology of most cells changed from columnar on XZ-plane (vertical section) to equiaxed on XY-plane (horizontal section). Correspondingly, morphology of most grains was found to alter from columnar for the XZ-plane to equiaxed in the case of the XY-plane. Moreover, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed a fully austenitic structure for both the planes. The average micro-hardness value for the XZ-plane and XY-plane was insignificantly (≈ 3%) different, …

We design an optimal passivitybased tracking/impedance control system for a robotic manipulator with energy regenerative electronics, where the manipulator has both actively and semi-actively controlled joints. The semi-active joints are driven by a regenerative actuator that includes an energy-storing element. Method: External forces can have a large influence on energy regeneration characteristics. Impedance control is used to impose a desired relationship between external forces and deviation from reference trajectories. Multi-objective optimization (MOO) is used to obtain optimal impedance parameters and control gains to compromise between the two conflicting objectives of trajectory tracking and energy regeneration. We solve the MOO problem …

Near-Optimal Control Of Switched Systems With Continuous-Time Dynamics Using Approximate Dynamic Programming, Tohid Sardarmehni Apr 2018

Near-Optimal Control Of Switched Systems With Continuous-Time Dynamics Using Approximate Dynamic Programming, Tohid Sardarmehni

Mechanical Engineering Research Theses and Dissertations

Optimal control is a control method which provides inputs that minimize a performance index subject to state or input constraints [58]. The existing solutions for finding the exact optimal control solution such as Pontryagin’s minimum principle and dynamic programming suffer from curse of dimensionality in high order dynamical systems. One remedy for this problem is finding near optimal solution instead of the exact optimal solution to avoid curse of dimensionality [31]. A method for finding the approximate optimal solution is through Approximate Dynamic Programming (ADP) methods which are discussed in the subsequent chapters.

In this dissertation, optimal switching in switched …
