Nanoparticle Penetration Of Respirator Masks At Construction Sites, Jefferson W. Doehling
Nanoparticle Penetration Of Respirator Masks At Construction Sites, Jefferson W. Doehling
Honors College Theses
This experimental investigation studies the effectiveness of N95 respirators at blocking particles between 11.5 and 154 nm in diameter during 4 different construction activities. It is well known that large amounts of dust and debris are generated during construction activities. New research has found that significantly more nanoparticles are generated during construction activities than previously thought. Consequently, the N95 respirators commonly worn to protect against these particles are only rated to block 95% particles larger than 0.3 microns in size. In this investigation, two respirator models were tested, a NIOSH TC-84A-0007 pleated N95 respirator and a NIOSH 42CFR84 foldable N95 …

Three experiments were conducted to achieve this purpose: (1) to determine if the 3D imaging instrument could accurately measure volume of static objects; (2) to determine the resolution of accuracy of measuring volume of static objects; and (3) to compare whole-body volume of wearing a wetsuit using 3D imaging as well as another body volume measure (air displacement technique). Methods: Three experiments were performed: …
Reducing Stress In 3d Printed Parts Made With Laser Engineered Net Shaping, Shaun Ross Whetten
Reducing Stress In 3d Printed Parts Made With Laser Engineered Net Shaping, Shaun Ross Whetten
Mechanical Engineering ETDs
Thermal cycling and repeated melting/solidification cycles characteristic of 3D metal printing processes causes buildup of residual stress in 3D printed parts. Using laser engineered net shaping (LENS®), residual stresses are formed leading to deformation and possible cracking of the 3D printed metal components. The LENS process offers opportunities for rapid prototyping, alternative manufacturing processes, and repair of worn/broken components so it is important to be able to minimize the effects of residual stress. Work was performed to understand the benefit of substrate heating on reducing residual stress in metal parts made using the LENS process. Substrate deformation, and destructive methods …

Assessing The Power Of Remotely-Sensed Snow Cover Extent To Improve Understanding Of Snowpack-Streamflow Dynamics: An Application Of Modis Snow Cover In Western U.S. Mountain Watersheds, Jennifer N. Van Osdel
Civil Engineering ETDs
Mountain snowpacks provide essential water for socio-economic systems around the world, with nearly two billion people living in snow sensitive regions. Therefore, methods for characterizing the snowpack-streamflow dynamics at the watershed level are essential for understanding how changes in temperature and precipitation due to climate change will affect the water supply in these regions. However, in-situ snowpack measurements, such as snow water equivalent (SWE), are often unavailable or insufficient due to the financial and logistical constraints of installing snowpack monitoring systems. Remotely-sensed snow cover extent (SCE), or the proportion of a watershed that is covered in snow, has been previously …

From Flasks To Applications: Design And Optimization Of Giant Quantum Dots Using Traditional And Automated Synthetic Methods, Christina J. Hanson
Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs
Semiconducting nanocrystals, also known as quantum dots (QDs), that emit light with near-unity quantum yield and are extremely photostable are attractive options as down-conversion and direct electricity-to-light materials for a variety of applications including solid-state lighting, display technologies, bio-imaging and optical tracking. Standard QDs with a core/thin shell structure display fluorescence intermittency (blinking) and photobleaching when exposed to prolonged room temperature excitation for single dot measurements, as well as significant reabsorption and energy transfer when densely packed into polymers or at high solution concentrations.
We have developed thick shell “giant” QDs (gQDs), ultra-stable photon sources both at the ensemble and …

Study region: Eastern shore of Ringkøbing Fjord, a coastal lagoon at the west coast of Denmark
Study focus: A dual tracer approach based on salinity and δ18O is used to assess seasonal dynamics at the saltwater-freshwater interface of a coastal lagoon. At the site, salinity is prone to vary on a sub-seasonal or daily frequency due to riverine freshwater inputs to the lagoon. In contrast, δ18O compositions of end-members only vary seasonally.
New hydrological insights: The dual tracer approach shows to be valuable in coastal settings where end-member concentrations vary substantially over the seasons and hence, …

Many applications are dealing with geometric data that are affected by uncertainty. It is important to analyze, visualize, and understand the properties of uncertain geometry. We present a methodology to model uncertain geometry based on multi-variate normal distributions. In addition, we propose a visualization technique to represent a hull for uncertain geometry capturing a user-defined percentage of the underlying uncertain geometry. To show the effectiveness of our approach, we have modeled and visualized uncertain datasets from different applications.

To mitigate the health problems and environmental damage caused by the burning of biomass in homes across the developing world, there is an international effort to design clean burning cookstoves that burn with greater efficiency and emit fewer harmful substances. An important tool for gauging the effectiveness of these alternate stoves is the optical particulate counting (OPC) sensor, which comes in many varieties. To facilitate comparison between measurements from different models, a mathematical model and uncertainty analysis method for OPC’s have been developed. These may be applied to any light-scattering OPC. In addition, a low-cost physical system was developed to …

Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research
Recent advances in gradient metasurfaces have shown that by locally controlling the bianisotropic response of the cells one can ensure full control of refraction, that is, arbitrarily redirect the waves without scattering into unwanted directions. In this work, we propose and experimentally verify the use of an acoustic cell architecture that provides enough degrees of freedom to fully control the bianisotropic response and minimizes the losses. The versatility of the approach is shown through the design of three refractive metasurfaces capable of redirecting a normally incident plane wave to 60°, 70°, and 80° on transmission. The efficiency of the bianisotropic …

Multi-Objective Resource Provisioning In Network Function Virtualization Infrastructures, Diogo Oliveira
Multi-Objective Resource Provisioning In Network Function Virtualization Infrastructures, Diogo Oliveira
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Network function virtualization (NFV) and software-dened networking (SDN) are two recent networking paradigms that strive to increase manageability, scalability, pro- grammability and dynamism. The former decouples network functions and hosting devices, while the latter decouples the data and control planes. As more and more service providers adopt these new paradigms, there is a growing need to address multi-failure conditions, particularly those arising from large-scale disaster events. Overall, addressing the virtual network function (VNF) placement and routing problem is crucial to deploy NFV surviv- ability. In particular, many studies have inspected non-survivable VNF provisioning, however no known work have proposed survivable/resilient …

Patient Specific Radiation Doses From Projection Radiography Images: Improving The Accuracy Of Low Dose Radiation Calculations, Daniel J. Sandoval
Nuclear Engineering ETDs
Due to an increase in regulatory scrutiny and medical facility accreditation requirements to monitor patient radiation dose from diagnostic imaging procedures, there is a growing necessity to determine and record accurate patient radiation dose from diagnostic medical imaging procedures. Current methods of patient dosimetry in diagnostic imaging are both extremely difficult and time consuming, require large computing resources (such as Monte Carlo computations), or lack accuracy due to using data based on homogeneous materials and “standard-man sized” anthropomorphic models.
This dissertation provides an algorithm that calculates a more accurate dose using patient-specific projection radiographic images. The algorithm includes measurements acquired …

Modern ultraviolet (UV) cameras, when combined with UV-transmitting lenses/filter arrangements, can be used to detect radiation dose in air. Ionizing radiation excites nitrogen molecules in ambient air, the resulting decay includes weak emission of ultraviolet photons. Previous work has proven this phenomenon is detectable using highly-sensitive electronically cooled cameras traditionally used in astronomy for low-background imaging. While the ability to detect the presence of radiation (i.e. qualitative measurement) has been demonstrated at Sandia National Laboratories, there are several challenges in correlating images to known dose-fields (quantitative measurement). These challenges include: a low signal to background ratio, interferences due to electronic …

In this research, we report a simple, versatile, and reproducible method for the synthesis of copper oxide nanoparticles via microwave assisted synthesis approach. The important advantage of this catalyst is due to its important role not only in the low temperature oxidation of CO but also in potential applications in pharmaceutical and fine chemical synthesis. The results reveal that the copper oxide catalyst has particularly a remarkable high activity for CO oxidation catalysis as it was found that copper oxide (CuO) catalyst has 100% conversion of carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide at 175 oC. This also could be attributed to …

Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) has been widely used as an effective way to preserve foods. Fresh produce, meat and meat products, seafood, and dairy products can benefit from modified gaseous atmospheres, which are usually achieved by reducing oxygen and increasing carbon dioxide concentrations, within limits, defined by product tolerances. MAP of fresh produce is particularly challenging because products are living and respiring. Respiration rates depend on several factors including temperature, oxygen, and carbon dioxide concentrations. Balancing package permeation with respiration is challenging, often due to limited selection of practical packaging materials. Failing to remain within tolerance limits of products leads …
