Optimization Of Supersingular Isogeny Cryptography For Deeply Embedded Systems, Jeffrey Denton Calhoun May 2018

Optimization Of Supersingular Isogeny Cryptography For Deeply Embedded Systems, Jeffrey Denton Calhoun

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Public-key cryptography in use today can be broken by a quantum computer with sufficient resources. Microsoft Research has published an open-source library of quantum-secure supersingular isogeny (SI) algorithms including Diffie-Hellman key agreement and key encapsulation in portable C and optimized x86 and x64 implementations. For our research, we modified this library to target a deeply-embedded processor with instruction set extensions and a finite-field coprocessor originally designed to accelerate traditional elliptic curve cryptography (ECC). We observed a 6.3-7.5x improvement over a portable C implementation using instruction set extensions and a further 6.0-6.1x improvement with the addition of the coprocessor. Modification of …

Density And Velocity Measurement Of Ari And Arii Using Laser Induced Fluorescence (Lif) In A Large-Scale Helicon Plasma, Ralph F. Kelly May 2018

Density And Velocity Measurement Of Ari And Arii Using Laser Induced Fluorescence (Lif) In A Large-Scale Helicon Plasma, Ralph F. Kelly

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Helicon plasma sources are widely used in basic plasma science, as well as for materials processing. These plasmas typically operate at high gas fill pressure, and therefore have significant densities of neutral particles. However, the role of neutrals in the overall plasma dynamics, such as ion flows, remains poorly understood. There are at least two possible mechanisms for neutrals to influence ion flows. One is an FxB drift, where F is the force exerted on ions by neutrals through collisions. The second is through Pedersen conductivity which is dependent on the ratio of the ion cyclotron frequency, ω …

Interest in Metamaterials has been rising drastically in the recent years as they have been used in several optical and RF applications, from antennas to perfect lenses and pulsed power devices. Nevertheless, the time-behavior of metamaterials remains opaque and poorly understood.

In this research work, characterization of a metamaterial structure in time and frequency-domain was made through simulations and experiments. The structure consists in a series of edge-side coupled Split Ring Resonators (SRRs) in a below cutoff waveguide. A linear time invariant model of distributed elements has been elaborated as well in an attempt to approach the structure’s behavior. The …

Physical And Social Systems Resilience Assessment And Optimization, Daniel Romero Rodriguez May 2018

Physical And Social Systems Resilience Assessment And Optimization, Daniel Romero Rodriguez

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Resilience has been measured using qualitative and quantitative metrics in engineering, economics, psychology, business, ecology, among others. This dissertation proposes a resilience metric that explicitly incorporates the intensity of the disruptive event to provide a more accurate estimation of system resilience. A comparative analysis between the proposed metric and average performance resilience metrics for linear and nonlinear loss and recovery functions suggests that the new metric enables a more objective assessment of resilience for disruptions with different intensities. Moreover, the proposed metric is independent of a control time parameter. This provides a more consistent resilience estimation for a given system and …

Thermal Fluid Models Of A Hydrogel Delivery System For Pancreatic Cancer Treatment, Nesrine Bouhrira May 2018

Thermal Fluid Models Of A Hydrogel Delivery System For Pancreatic Cancer Treatment, Nesrine Bouhrira

Theses and Dissertations

Pancreatic cancer is one of the most devastating cancers with low survival rates. This disease is difficult to detect due to the pancreas's location deep within the body. Therefore, diagnoses are often made in the later stages, making treatment options more limited and difficult. It has been hypothesized that direct injection into the tumor would enhance drug effectivenes. Therefore, we examined the use of endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) combined with a fine needle injection to deliver a drug-eluding thermosensitive hydrogel directly into the tumor. Unfortunately normal body temperatures surrounding the EUS can warm the hydrogel drug combination beyond its phase transition …

The Role Of Criticality Of Gene Regulatory Networks On Emergent Properties Of Biological Systems, Hyobin Kim May 2018

The Role Of Criticality Of Gene Regulatory Networks On Emergent Properties Of Biological Systems, Hyobin Kim

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

The relationship between criticality of gene regulatory networks (GRNs) and dynamics of GRNs at a single cell level has been vigorously studied. However, the relationship between the criticality of GRNs and properties of multicellular organisms at a higher level has not been fully explored. Here we aim at revealing potential roles of the criticality of GRNs at a multicellular and hierarchical level, using a random Boolean network as a GRN. We perform three studies. Firstly, we propose a GRN-based morphogenetic model, and delve into the role of the criticality of GRNs in morphogenesis at a multicellular level. Secondly, we include …

Uncertainty Aware Mapping Of Embedded Systems For Reliability, Performance, And Energy, Wenkai Guan, Milad Ghorbani Moghaddam, Cristinel Ababei

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Duo to technology downscaling, embedded systems have increased in complexity and heterogeneity. Increasingly large process, voltage, and temperature variations negatively affect the design and optimization process of these systems. These factors contribute to increased uncertainties that in turn undermine the accuracy and effectiveness of traditional design approaches. In this paper, we formulate the problem of uncertainty aware mapping for multicore embedded systems as a multi-objective optimization problem. We present a solution to this problem that integrates uncertainty models as a new design methodology constructed with Monto Carlo and evolutionary algorithms. The methodology is uncertainty aware because it is able to …

A Study Of Light-Matter Interaction In Nanopatterned Arrays And Biosensing Applications, Mohammad Waliullah

Student Theses and Dissertations

Food fraud and adulteration issue is persistent everywhere in today’s world. Identification of the seafood and meat species correctly, swiftly and economically is a necessity to fight this issue. Every species has its unique DNA. Therefore, identification of DNA will lead to identification of species. Before identification, DNA must be amplified to facilitate analysis. The traditional methods for both amplification and identification of DNA require sophisticated laboratory, trained personnel, high cost and long time. In case of amplification, choosing Recombinase Polymerase Amplification (RPA) method over traditional barcoding method can reduce these problems. In case of identification, fabrication of a novel …

Digital Enhancement Of Analog Measurement Systems For Temperature Compensation Of Strain Gages, Islombek Karimov May 2018

Digital Enhancement Of Analog Measurement Systems For Temperature Compensation Of Strain Gages, Islombek Karimov

Electrical Engineering Theses

Generally known temperature compensation techniques for strain gages (like the use of a dummy gage or the implementation of half- and full-bridge configurations) are not applicable to all strain-measurement situations and cannot fully compensate for all sources of error. Digital Enhancement of Analog Measurement Systems presents a universal method of corrections for these effects in which temperature is measured independently of other variables and ex post facto corrections are computed and applied to digitized readings of the analog measurement system.

A single, linear-pattern strain gage, self-temperature-compensated for steel 1018, has been utilized in a quarter-bridge to measure tensile strain in …

Electric Aircraft And The Environment: A Literature Review, Uyen T. Sou May 2018

Electric Aircraft And The Environment: A Literature Review, Uyen T. Sou

McNair Research Journal SJSU

Historically, the integration of social need, environmental impact, and technological advancement has been a challenging balancing act for growing cities and metropoles. If the balance between social need and environmental sustainability is reached, the increasing advancements and improvements made to electric aircrafts have the potential to steer society towards a new mode of sustainable air. One reason why electric aircraft technology has not grown as fast as other technologies is because there lacked a need for fast advancements. With that said, electric aircraft technologies are improving today due to the demand in heavily populated cities to relieve traffic [5]. Some …

Finite Element Analysis Of A Guideway For Automated Transit Networks, Issac Gendler May 2018

Finite Element Analysis Of A Guideway For Automated Transit Networks, Issac Gendler

McNair Research Journal SJSU

An asymmetric beam currently being utilized in a solar powered automated transit system was analyzed for its deflections, stresses, and angle of twist. Finite element analysis (FEA) with ANSYS was used in conjunction with hand calculations from beam theory to determine the response of the guideway to loading anticipated in normal operation. An iterative approach was used for modeling the system, where the geometry was taken from a simplified case and progressed in complexity until the original model was duplicated. After analysis, the deflections, stresses, and angles of twist were found to be within suitable ranges for a suspended transportation …

Cell Culture Bioprocess Learnings: Past Successes And Future Challenges, Günter Jagschies

Cell Culture Engineering XVI

Therapeutic proteins, vaccines and – further away – cell and gene therapies are considered essential to find efficacious interventions and preventive measures to a rather long list of prioritized needs in healthcare. The challenge is developing into a ‘tsunami’ of sorts as the global demographic transition causes populations to age, dramatically accelerating the growth of non-communicable disease (NCD) in all parts of the world. India and China are the markets with the largest patient population for almost any NCD, or they are going to be in that position soon. Competition in this field is ramping up with an intensity that …

Cell Culture Engineering XVI

Brain microenvironment plays an important role in neurodevelopment and pathology, where extracellular matrix (ECM) and soluble factors modulate multiple cellular processes. Neural cell culture typically relies on the use of heterologous matrices that poorly resemble the brain ECM or reflect its pathological features. We have previously demonstrated that perfusion stirred-tank bioreactor-based 3D differentiation of human neural stem cells (NSC) - pSTR-neurospheroids, sustains the concomitant differentiation of the three neural cell lineages (neurons, astrocytes and oligodendrocytes) and the establishment of physiologically relevant cell-cell interactions. Here, we hypothesized that if the pSTR-neurospheroid strategy would also allow the deposition of native neural ECM …

Fn3 Proteins Engineered To Recognize Tumor Biomarker Mesothelin Internalize Upon Binding, Allison R. Sirois, Daniela A. Deny, Samantha R. Baierl, Katia S. George, Sarah J. Moore

Engineering: Faculty Publications

Mesothelin is a cell surface protein that is overexpressed in numerous cancers, including breast, ovarian, lung, liver, and pancreatic tumors. Aberrant expression of mesothelin has been shown to promote tumor progression and metastasis through interaction with established tumor biomarker CA125. Therefore, molecules that specifically bind to mesothelin have potential therapeutic and diagnostic applications. However, no mesothelin-targeting molecules are currently approved for routine clinical use. While antibodies that target mesothelin are in development, some clinical applications may require a targeting molecule with an alternative protein fold. For example, non-antibody proteins are more suitable for molecular imaging and may facilitate diverse chemical …

Effect Of Zr Additions On Thermal Stability Of Al-Cu Precipitates In As-Cast And Cold Worked Samples, Kyle Deane, Paul G. Sanders May 2018

Effect Of Zr Additions On Thermal Stability Of Al-Cu Precipitates In As-Cast And Cold Worked Samples, Kyle Deane, Paul G. Sanders

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

While Zr is frequently added to Al alloys to control grain size with the formation of large (>1 μm) primary precipitates, little research has been conducted on the effect of nanoscale Al3Zr precipitates on Al alloys. By comparing the precipitation and corresponding strength evolution between Al-Cu-Zr alloys with different Zr concentrations, the effects of Zr on Al-Cu precipitation with and without primary Al3Zr precipitates can be observed. In the absence of these large precipitates, all Al3Zr phases can be formed, through high temperature aging treatments, as a dispersion of nanoprecipaites inside the Al …
