Assembling A Successful Industry-Sponsored Senior Capstone Program – Lessons Learned From A Startup Effort At A Liberal Arts University, Lori Houghtalen, Timothy Kennedy, Raymond Smith

Management Sciences

A medium-sized (around 4000 students) liberal arts university recently began a general engineering program. The program’s first graduating class was in May 2016, and the program obtained initial ABET accreditation in August 2017. Entering the 2015-2016 academic year, program faculty envisioned a capstone design experience that would engage student teams in a year-long, professional level design project sponsored by an industry client. The first two years of the capstone design program have been inarguably successful, and in this paper we identify and reflect on the keys to our success. The intention for writing this paper is to ensure the success …

Toward Controllable Hydraulic Coupling Of Joints In A Wearable Robot, Emma Treadway, Z. Gan, C. D. Remy, R. Brent Gillespie Jun 2018

Toward Controllable Hydraulic Coupling Of Joints In A Wearable Robot, Emma Treadway, Z. Gan, C. D. Remy, R. Brent Gillespie

Engineering Faculty Research

In this paper, we develop theoretical foundations for a new class of rehabilitation robot: body powered devices that route power between a user’s joints. By harvesting power from a healthy joint to assist an impaired joint, novel bimanual and self-assist therapies are enabled. This approach complements existing robotic therapies aimed at promoting recovery of motor function after neurological injury.

We employ hydraulic transmissions for routing power, or equivalently for coupling the motions of a user’s joints. Fluid power routed through flexible tubing imposes constraints within a limb or between homologous joints across the body. Variable transmissions allow constraints to be …

Modular Injection System And Sampling Template (M.I.S.S.T) Design Report, Froylan M. Aguirre Jun 2018

Modular Injection System And Sampling Template (M.I.S.S.T) Design Report, Froylan M. Aguirre

Computer Engineering

Digital systems are ubiquitous throughout modern life and their applications continue to grow. Thus system designers engineer and test modular systems to mitigate error rates. Smaller systems and their increasing importance in many applications demand the utmost reliability. Fault injection is the most common method used by researchers and engineers to test system reliability. However, most hardware fault injection implementations are ad hoc and only used to test a specific system or for specific tests. There is also software-implemented fault injection that adds overhead in the benchmark source code. The aim of this project is to develop a general use, …

Smart Speaker Integration With Letshub, Michael Thanh Diep Jun 2018

Smart Speaker Integration With Letshub, Michael Thanh Diep

Computer Engineering

Imagine you are a property manager, and you are currently renting your property to tenants. These tenants, who pay rent continuously for use of the property often leave the burden of upkeep to the property owner (or property manager). If the tenant were to run into an issue with their rental (such as a broken sink, replacement of a faucet, leaking of the roof, … etc.) they would have to coordinate with the property manager, who would then in turn have to manage the logistics of a service contractor and the tenants availability. Eventually, after logistic juggling from the tenant, …

Versatile Usb Powered Turntable, Kyle P. Mccarry Jun 2018

Versatile Usb Powered Turntable, Kyle P. Mccarry

Electrical Engineering

People enjoy vinyl music’s warm sound, user participation, and nostalgic feel, but the large physical size and seemingly immobile system requirements prevent vinyl turntables branching into digital music dominated realms. The manual turntable plays seven to twelve-inch vinyl at 33 1/3 or 45 rpm. It includes a stylus, magnetic phono cartridge, tonearm, 45-rpm adapter, motor, audio output, and several setting switches and knob for easy use.

Analysis Of Improved Multiphase Buck Converter, Usamah Riaz Ahmad, Scott Wu Jun 2018

Analysis Of Improved Multiphase Buck Converter, Usamah Riaz Ahmad, Scott Wu

Electrical Engineering

While the number of transistors per microprocessor is rapidly increasing, the power requirements of converters are getting more and more important. The amount of current is increasing, while at the same time the output voltage is steadily decreasing. Today’s boards are exceeding 100A, while the buck converters have their output voltage below 1 V. Due to these new power requirements, multiphase buck converters are becoming more popular. In addition, this topology is usually used with voltage regulator modules (VRM).

The TPS40090EVM-002 board was used as the original multiphase buck with an input voltage of 12 V and output voltage of …

Investigating Efficiency Of Ac Direct Drive Of Led Lighting, Miles Davis Head Jun 2018

Investigating Efficiency Of Ac Direct Drive Of Led Lighting, Miles Davis Head

Electrical Engineering

This project explores the rapidly-expanding area of AC direct drive for LED lighting. AC LED driving does not use typical DC-DC converter-based driving but uses semiconductor switches and a linear regulator to activate a number of LEDs proportional to the input voltage at any given time. This allows bulky, expensive magnetics to be eliminated from the system. The goal of this project was to develop a flexible simulation of a common AC LED system to find areas of significant power loss and attempt to improve them. This allows future versions of an AC LED system to start with major loss …

Design And Test Of Wide Input And Output Constant Current Led Driver, Kean Wee Jun 2018

Design And Test Of Wide Input And Output Constant Current Led Driver, Kean Wee

Electrical Engineering

This senior project aims to provide design and test the performance of a DC-DC constant current LED driver for use in a larger DC smart building infrastructure. In this instance, a SEPIC topology is chosen to provide high efficiency output current at output voltages that can be above or below the input voltage. This is challenging since the same design must operate at similar efficiency for vastly different environmental conditions. As a part of a larger system, the design must be able to perform the given task consistently regardless of changes to the source and load power.

The design uses …

Pressure Ulcer Prevention System, Rey-David Palomares, Ojus Rao Jun 2018

Pressure Ulcer Prevention System, Rey-David Palomares, Ojus Rao

Interdisciplinary Design Senior Theses

Pressure ulcers, also known as bedsores, are a widespread but often understated problem. A pressure ulcer is an injury that develops with constant pressure on an area of skin for a long time. They range from bruises to open wounds to even exposed bone. These injuries especially impact bedridden and elderly hospital inpatients, since these people must depend on nursing staff for mobility.

Pressure ulcers can seem to be a solved problem. Solutions that completely eliminate pressure ulcers do exist. These solutions, however, are too expensive for widespread use, at thousands of dollars per bed. Other solutions, such as relying …

Parametrization Of Triple Screw Pumps For Aerospace Applications, Allison Putira Jun 2018

Parametrization Of Triple Screw Pumps For Aerospace Applications, Allison Putira

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Triple Screw Pumps, a form of positive displacement pump, offer steady, high-pressure flow. In very small launch vehicles or upper stages turbopumps are not practical. This paper examines the performance of triple screw pumps to determine if they may serve as an alternative to turbopumps for use in small launch vehicles or upper stages. To this end, the geometry of the screws is first determined from the relative sizes of the screws and tooth height. From this — along with the screw angle and screw clearance — the performance parameters of flow rate, output pressure, and efficiency can be computed. …

Specifically, we developed the mechanical subsystems of a 6U CubeSat, a small satellite, in order to provide expanded volume, enhanced power generation, and Earth referenced orientation control compared with previous …

Active Control Stabilization Of High Power Rocket, Valeria Avila Guerrero, Angel Barranco, Daniel Conde Jun 2018

Active Control Stabilization Of High Power Rocket, Valeria Avila Guerrero, Angel Barranco, Daniel Conde

Mechanical Engineering Senior Theses

High power rockets could become dynamically unstable due to outside disturbances after takeoff. The instability is augmented when the rocket is "slow" off the launch rail, which happens when the thrust-to-weight ratio is less than 5:1. Due to these reasons, the objective of this project was to design and build an active control system that will make sure the rocket follows a straight path all the way to apogee. This will be done through a model-based design approach, in which a 6DOF mathematical model of the flight dynamics will be created.

Vibration Attenuating Medical Platform, Cameron Fisch, Noah Friedman, Tyler Gambill, David Harris, Kelek Olais

Mechanical Engineering Senior Theses

Millions of injured people are transported by ambulances each year. While the suspension systems of ambulances dampen the road vibrations felt by the passengers, they do not attenuate the vibration completely. To patients who have compromised physical states, vibration and displacement can aggravate their condition and cause additional pain. Our solution to this societal problem is the Vibration Attenuating Medical Platform (VAMP). VAMP consists of an aluminum and steel structure that is moved with a pneumatic piston. This prototype is designed to fit into existing ambulances and attenuate the vibrations not eliminated by the ambulances suspension. After conducting background research, …
