Investigating On Through Glass Via Based Rf Passives For 3-D Integration, Libo Qian, Jifei Sang, Yinshui Xia, Jian Wang, Peiyi Zhao
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
Due to low dielectric loss and low cost, glass is developed as a promising material for advanced interposers in 2.5-D and 3-D integration. In this paper, through glass vias (TGVs) are used to implement inductors for minimal footprint and large quality factor. Based on the proposed physical structure, the impact of various process and design parameters on the electrical characteristics of TGV inductors is investigated with 3-D electromagnetic simulator HFSS. It is observed that TGV inductors have identical inductance and larger quality factor in comparison with their through silicon via counterparts. Using TGV inductors and parallel plate capacitors, a compact …

Gain Scheduled Torque Compensation Of Pmsg-Based Wind Turbine For Frequency Regulation In An Isolated Grid, Haixin Wang, Junyou Yang, Zhe Chen, Weichun Ge, Shiyan Hu, Yiming Ma, Et Al.
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
Frequency stability in an isolated grid can be easily impacted by sudden load or wind speed changes. Many frequency regulation techniques are utilized to solve this problem. However, there are only few studies designing torque compensation controllers based on power performances in different Speed Parts. It is a major challenge for a wind turbine generator (WTG) to achieve the satisfactory compensation performance in different Speed Parts. To tackle this challenge, this paper proposes a gain scheduled torque compensation strategy for permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) based wind turbines. Our main idea is to improve the anti-disturbance ability for frequency regulation …
A Coupled Thermo-Mechanical Theory Of Strain Gradient Plasticity For Small And Finite Deformations, Yooseob Song
A Coupled Thermo-Mechanical Theory Of Strain Gradient Plasticity For Small And Finite Deformations, Yooseob Song
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In this work, a thermodynamically consistent coupled thermo-mechanical gradient enhanced continuum plasticity theory is developed for small and finite deformations. The proposed model is conceptually based on the dislocations interaction mechanisms and thermal activation energy. The thermodynamic conjugate microstresses are decomposed into energetic and dissipative components. This work incorporates the thermal and mechanical responses of microsystems. It addresses phenomena such as size and boundary effects and in particular microscale heat transfer in fast-transient processes. Not only the partial heat dissipation caused by the fast transient time, but also the distribution of temperature caused by the transition from the plastic work …

Correcting For Targeted And Control Agent Signal Differences In Paired-Agent Molecular Imaging Of Cancer Cell-Surface Receptors, Negar Sadeghipour, Scott C. Davis, Kenneth M. Tichauer
Dartmouth Scholarship
Paired-agent kinetic modeling protocols provide one means of estimating cancer cell-surface receptors with in vivo molecular imaging. The protocols employ the coadministration of a control imaging agent with one or more targeted imaging agent to account for the nonspecific uptake and retention of the targeted agent. These methods require the targeted and control agent data be converted to equivalent units of concentration, typically requiring specialized equipment and calibration, and/or complex algorithms that raise the barrier to adoption. This work evaluates a kinetic model capable of correcting for targeted and control agent signal differences. This approach was compared with an existing …

Underground Stormwater Treatment Performance In Urban Coastal Catchments: Case Study Of Baffle Boxes In The City Of Tampa, Awet Eyob Tsegay
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In coastal urban regions, underground stormwater treatment units are suitable infrastructure options because they take less space where premium land is expensive. Even then, they should be accessible and ideally small enough to fit into existing stormwater networks. Since 2003, the City of Tampa and Florida’s Department of Transportation (FDOT) have installed 47 baffle boxes into the city’s stormwater pipe networks. Baffle boxes are underground stormwater treatment structures designed to capture sediments and floating debris. Since their deployment, many challenges regarding their practical sediment capturing performance was raised by the city.
The objective of this research was to evaluate the …

A Vaccine For Ebola Virus – Approaches And Results Of Accelerated Process Development And Characterization Studies, Randi Saunders, Joseph P Califano, Dusan Ruzic, Kristin Valente
Vaccine Technology VII
In 2014, West Africa experienced the worst outbreak of Ebola virus in history with 10 times more cases than in all previous outbreaks combined. In response to this public health emergency, MSD and a global network of partners collaborated to speed the research, development, and deployment of a candidate vaccine that ultimately provided the first evidence of efficacy in human subjects for any Ebola vaccine. While work continues to ultimately license the candidate vaccine, a risk-based approach to process development and characterization was used to accelerate and prioritize the study of parameters. Risk was evaluated by experts familiar with unit …

A Novel Multiscale Mathematical Model For Building Bone Substitute Materials For Children, Abdennasser Chekroun, Laurent Pujo-Menjouet, Jean-Philippe Berteau
Publications and Research
Bone is an engineering marvel that achieves a unique combination of stiffness and toughness exceeding that of synthesized materials. In orthopedics, we are currently challenged for the child population that needs a less stiff but a tougher bone substitute than adults. Recent evidence suggests that the relationship between inter-molecular connections that involve the two main bone building blocks, TropoCollagen molecules (TC) and carbonated Hydroxyapatite (cAp), and bone macroscopic mechanical properties, stiffness and toughness, are key to building bone substitute materials for children. The goal of our study is to establish how inter-molecular connections that occur during bone mineralization are related …
Pore-Scale And Conventional Wettability Measurement Considerations For Improving Certainty Of Geological Co2 Sequestration, Mohammad Jafari
Pore-Scale And Conventional Wettability Measurement Considerations For Improving Certainty Of Geological Co2 Sequestration, Mohammad Jafari
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Parallel to the approach of developing zero-carbon-emission energies, other solutions have been recently proposed to decrease the amount of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. Geological CO2 sequestration (GCS) has provided economic benefits and slight adverse environmental effects. GCS involves capturing CO2 from large producers, then injecting it into deep layers of the earth’s subsurface to be stored for hundreds to thousands of years. A safe and economic GCS requires a profound knowledge of immiscible CO2-water/brine fluid flow in CO2 storage sites including capillary pressure which has a barrier effect against leakage. The main uncertainty in measuring capillary pressure is due …

Laboratory Evaluation On Performance Of Compound-Modified Asphalt For Rock Asphalt/Styrene–Butadiene Rubber (Sbr) And Rock Asphalt/Nano-Caco3, Songtao Lv, Shuangshuang Wang, Tong Guo, Chengdong Xia, Jianglong Li, Gui Hou
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
As a natural modifier of asphalt, rock asphalt has been widely used to improve its thermal stability and aging resistance. However, the thermal cracking resistance of asphalt modified by rock asphalt is unsatisfactory. In order to improve the thermal cracking resistance in low temperature, two kinds of modifiers—styrene–butadiene rubber (SBR) and nano-CaCO3—were selected as the compound modifiers, and then implemented to improve the low-temperature performance of the binder. Then, compound asphalt modified by Buton rock asphalt (BRA) was chosen as the study subject. The thermal stability and aging resistance of asphalt modified by BRA, compound-modified asphalt by BRA/SBR, …
Development Of 3-D Printed Hybrid Packaging For Gaas-Mems Oscillators Based On Piezoelectrically-Transduced Zno-On-Soi Micromechanical Resonators, Di Lan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Prior research focused on CMOS-MEMS integrated oscillator has been done using various foundry compatible integration techniques. In order to compensate the integration compatibility, MEMS resonators built on standard CMOS foundry process could not take full advantage of highest achievable quality factor on chip. System-in-package (SiP) and system-on-chip (SoC) is becoming the next generation of electronic packaging due to the need of multi-functional devices and multi-sensor systems, thus wafer level hybrid integration becomes the key to enable the full assembly of dissimilar devices. In this way, every active circuit and passive component can be individually optimized, so do the MEMS resonators …
Reconsidering Downwind Operation By Analysis Of The Nrel Phase Vi Data, Scott Larwood, Raymond Chow
Reconsidering Downwind Operation By Analysis Of The Nrel Phase Vi Data, Scott Larwood, Raymond Chow
All Faculty Articles - School of Engineering and Computer Science
Data are presented comparing upwind versus downwind operation of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s Phase VI wind turbine. Power was not reduced as expected for downwind, which may be attributed to inboard three-dimensional effects. Average flap bending loads were reduced with downwind coning and compared well with prediction. Fatigue loads were increased with downwind; however, fatigue was mitigated with a tower shroud. The shroud needs to align with the freestream, demonstrated by an increase in fatigue loads from a 10° shroud misalignment. Pressure data were acquired in the tower wake at the rotor location with and without the shroud. The …

Experimental, Analytical, And Numerical Evaluation Of The Mechanical Properties Of The Brain Tissue, Aref Samadidooki
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
A true understanding of the mechanisms behind most of the brain diseases is still out of reach. For several years, the interest of scientists has been focused on the genetic and biological causes, however, recent studies unraveled the importance of the biomechanics of the brain growth, folding, impact resistance, and deformation on its pathological conditions. While, a wide range of different methods have been used for characterization of the mechanical properties of the brain at the tissue level, the obtained results from different studies are extremely scattered and sometimes in contrast to one another. Since the brain tissue is extremely …
Experimental And Numerical Investigation Of Liquid-Assisted Gas-Lift Unloading, Renato Peixoto Coutinho
Experimental And Numerical Investigation Of Liquid-Assisted Gas-Lift Unloading, Renato Peixoto Coutinho
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The case for a unique form of gas-lift unloading, termed “Liquid-Assisted Gas-Lift (LAGL),” is presented. This work demonstrates that the injection of a gas-liquid mixture allows transport of gas to a deep injection point utilizing injection pressure considerably lower than single-phase gas injection. The LAGL is demonstrated in a 2,880 ft deep test well. The test well is kicked-off using an injection pressure that would normally be lower than the pressure for single-point single-phase gas injection at this depth. Experimental results indicate that the LAGL can lower the injection pressure by up to 75%.
This work breaks the LAGL system …

There have been many studies focusing on different types of traffic delays, pedestrians’ interaction at signalized intersections and economic losses as a result of these delays. However, there is a huge gap in the current literature, regionally and globally, in studying the traffic delays associated with jaywalking. In Egypt, jaywalking is considered a common phenomenon, however, population increased drastically over the past decades in Greater Cairo leading to more congested streets. This research provides a case study that investigates the economic effect of jaywalking on traffic flow in Mashaal, a sample location in Greater Cairo, due to traffic congestion. The …
Vibration-Based Defect Detection For Freight Railcar Tapered-Roller Bearings, Joseph Montalvo, Constantine Tarawneh, Arturo A. Fuentes
Vibration-Based Defect Detection For Freight Railcar Tapered-Roller Bearings, Joseph Montalvo, Constantine Tarawneh, Arturo A. Fuentes
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
The railroad industry currently utilizes two wayside detection systems to monitor the health of freight railcar bearings in service: The Trackside Acoustic Detection System (TADS™) and the wayside Hot-Box Detector (HBD). TADS™ uses wayside microphones to detect and alert the conductor of high risk defects. Many defective bearings may never be detected by TADS™ due to the fact that a high risk defect is considered a spall which spans more than 90% of a bearing’s raceway, and there are less than 20 systems in operation throughout the United States and Canada. Much like the TADS™, the HBD is a device …

Developing And Testing An Electronic Homework System To Improve Student Engagement And Learning In Engineering Thermodynamics, Stephen Crown, Constantine Tarawneh, Jazmin Ley
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
An electronic homework delivery system was developed for an advanced undergraduate engineering thermodynamics course due to limitations in available electronic homework systems. A commercially available system was effectively used in the introductory course for simple problems. The complexity of problems in the advanced course made adoption of the same system problematic as students needed feedback in the problem solving process. A system was devised that delivers individual problems to each student, provides feedback throughout the process, and records results for assessment. The system has helped students become more active in homework assignments in both completing assignments and in doing original …

Development Of A Vaccine Production Platform For Poultry Diseases In Africa: Newcastle Disease Virus Non-Replicative Adenovirus-Vectored Vaccine, Omar Farnos, Amine Kamen, Héla Kallel, Khaled Trabelsi, Martha Yami, Esayas Gelaye
Vaccine Technology VII
Poultry are a vital village livestock playing an important economic and nutritional role in the livelihoods of poor rural households in developing countries, including the Sub-Saharan Africa. Poultry production in Africa is threatened by infectious diseases such as Newcastle Disease (ND), which is highly contagious and endemic, with recurrent outbreaks that provoke heavy losses every year. ND is caused by the Newcastle disease virus (NDV), a negative-sense single-stranded RNA virus from the genus Avulavirus, family Paramyxoviridae. In particular, ND is one of the major problems in village chickens in most parts of Ethiopia where commercial poultry is routinely vaccinated …

Virus-Like Particle Vaccines Against Bk And Jc Polyomaviruses, Diana V. Pastrana, Alberto Peretti, Eileen M. Geoghegan, Christopher B. Buck
Vaccine Technology VII
Nearly all healthy adults are asymptomatically infected with human polyomaviruses. In immunosuppressed individuals, the infection can reactivate and cause disease. BK polyomavirus (BKV) frequently damages transplanted kidneys and causes severe bladder disease in bone marrow transplant patients. JC polyomavirus (JCV) causes a lethal brain disease, PML, in individuals on various immunosuppressive therapies. PML also affects immunodeficient individuals, including AIDS patients.
The outer capsid proteins of polyomaviruses are structurally similar to the capsids of human papillomaviruses (HPVs). Building on the success of the NCI’s HPV virus-like particle (VLP) vaccine technologies, we have developed VLP vaccines targeting BKV and JCV. Preclinical testing …

Membrane Chromatography Cassettes For Bind And Elute Applications Of Viruses And Large Proteins, Stefan Fischer-Frühholz, Martin Leuthold, Stefan Weisshaar, Florian Taft, Miyako Hirai, Amélie Boulais
Vaccine Technology VII
For flow-through polishing applications, membrane adsorbers have become a well-established technology. However, there is an increasing demand for bind and elute purifications for larger targets as adeno- and lentiviruses, virus like particles (VLP) and influenza. The reason is the higher binding capacity of macroporous membranes compared to conventional resins having much smaller pores and excluding them by size. But capture applications with such devices suffered from the current size limitation of 5 liters. Here we describe a modular cassette system which has been tested for scale-up and flow performance in comparison with void volume optimized capsules. The goals were to …

Influenza Virus Capture Using Membrane Chromatography: Improving Selectivity By Matrix Design And Pseudo-Affinity Ligand Interactions, Stefan Fischer-Frühholz, Florian Taft, Louis Villain, Amélie Boulais, R. Köhler, Sebastian Van Teeffelen, Michael W. Wolff, Udo Reichl, A. Raquel Fortuna
Vaccine Technology VII
Because next generation cell-based influenza vaccines have to be produced faster and in greater quantities than traditional vaccines, future purification processes will require more efficient unit operations for their isolation and purification. Membrane chromatography has already demonstrated a number of positive characteristics for the bind&elute purification of viral particles like e.g. adenoviruses or influenza viruses. The technology not only addresses the diffusion limitations of porous particle media but also offers dramatic advantages in binding capacity in a disposable format. Therefore, the last remaining challenge for the easy adoption of this technology in the vaccine industry represents selectivity and recovery. We …

An Outbreed Mouse Model Of Yellow Fever For Study Of Pathogenesis And Development Of Vaccines And Therapeutics, Yakhya Dieye, Moussa Dia, André Bedekelabou, Ousmane Faye
Vaccine Technology VII
Yellow fever (YF) is a mosquito-borne viral disease that is endemic in several African and South American countries. YF virus (YFV) causes subclinical infections with mild and non-specific symptoms, to severe, potentially lethal illness with jaundice, hemorrhage, and renal failure. Despite the existence of safe and efficient vaccines, epidemics continue to occur, mostly in Africa where the burden of YF is estimated to represent 1.7 million annual cases and up to 80,000 deaths per year. Moreover, emergence of YF has been reported in new, previously unaffected areas, because of the introduction of the mosquito vectors into these lands. There is …

The vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) can be used as an effective vaccine platform, inducing both cellular and humoral immunity. Because VSV infections of humans are mostly asymptomatic, recombinant VSV (rVSV) can be used as a platform to safely deliver and express foreign antigens. This research study focusses on cell culture production of an rVSV expressing the Ebola virus glycoprotein on its surface (rVSV-ZEBOV). This virus has been demonstrated to be safe to administer to humans. In addition, recent results of a human phase III clinical trial showed that this vaccine can efficiently protect against Ebola virus infection. However, limited data …

Multihazard Scenarios For Analysis Of Compound Extreme Events, Mojtaba Sadegh
Multihazard Scenarios For Analysis Of Compound Extreme Events, Mojtaba Sadegh
Civil Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Compound extremes correspond to events with multiple concurrent or consecutive drivers (e.g., ocean and fluvial flooding, drought, and heat waves) leading to substantial impacts such as infrastructure failure. In many risk assessment and design applications, however, multihazard scenarios of extremes and compound events are ignored. In this paper, we review the existing multivariate design and hazard scenario concepts and introduce a novel copula-based weighted average threshold scenario for an expected event with multiple drivers. The model can be used for obtaining multihazard design and risk assessment scenarios and their corresponding likelihoods. The proposed model offers uncertainty ranges of most likely …

The manufacturing of insensitive munition 2,4-dinitroanisole (DNAN) generates waste streams that require treatment. DNAN has been treated previously with zero-valent iron (ZVI) and Fe-based bimetals. Use of Mg-based bimetals offers certain advantages including potential higher reactivity and relative insensitivity to pH conditions. This work reports preliminary findings of DNAN degradation by three Mg-based bimetals: Mg/Cu, Mg/Ni, and Mg/Zn. Treatment of DNAN by all three bimetals is highly effective in aqueous solutions (> 89% removal) and wastewater (> 91% removal) in comparison with treatment solely with zero-valent magnesium (ZVMg; 35% removal). Investigation of reaction byproducts supports a partial degradation pathway involving …

Applying Block Chain Technologies To Digital Voting Algorithms, Vishanth Iyer, Nathan Kerr, Justin Meeken, Alex Seto
Computer Science and Engineering Senior Theses
Voting is a fundamental aspect to democracy. Many countries have advanced voting systems in place, but many of these systems have issues behind them such as not being anonymous or verifiable. Additionally, most voting systems currently have a central authority in charge of counting votes, which can be prone to corruption. We propose a voting system which mitigates many of these issues. Our voting system attempts to provide decentralization, pseudoanonymity, and verifiability. For our system, we have identified the requirements, implemented the backbone of the system, recognized some of its shortcomings, and proposed areas of future work on this voting …
