Ultraviolet Diffraction Assisted Image Correlation (Uv-Daic) For Single-Camera 3d Strain Measurement At Extreme Temperatures, Ethan K. Nickerson Aug 2018

Ultraviolet Diffraction Assisted Image Correlation (Uv-Daic) For Single-Camera 3d Strain Measurement At Extreme Temperatures, Ethan K. Nickerson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Digital Image Correlation (DIC) is a technique which uses images taken before and after deformation to determine displacement and strain data over the surface of the sample. In order to obtain this data for both in-plane as well as out-of-plane direction, multiple views of the sample are required. Typically, this is accomplished using multiple cameras, but it is possible to use diffraction gratings to bend the light coming from the specimen in order to allow a single camera to capture multiple views. This technique is referred to as Diffraction Assisted Image Correlation (DAIC) and has been previously demonstrated at room …

On Thermal Bowing Of Concrete Sandwich Wall Panels With Flexible Shear Connectors, Fray Pozo Aug 2018

On Thermal Bowing Of Concrete Sandwich Wall Panels With Flexible Shear Connectors, Fray Pozo

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Thermal bowing, often referred as bulging or out-of-plane wall deflection, is a common issue on sandwich panel walls caused by a temperature differential between a building interior temperature and the environment. The stresses caused by temperature changes in concrete members are widely known in the practice of bridge design, but not on sandwich wall panels. For sandwich wall panel applications, it is common to have non-composite panels when the designer expects a high temperature gradient, what yields a less economical design, but reduces the bowing.

This project aimed to validate current assumptions regarding the heat flow in sandwich wall panels …

Serialised Holography For Brand Protection And Authentication, Dinesh Vather, Izabela Naydenova, Dervil Cody, Monika Zawadzka, Suzanne Martin, Emilia Mihaylova, Stephen Curran, Paul Duffy, Josune Portillo, Daniel Connell, Stephen Mcdonnell, Vincent Toal

Articles

The problems presented by counterfeit products and documentation are discussed. Limitations of existing holograms for anti-counterfeit applications are described. We describe the advantages of full holographic serialisation and the requirements in terms of materials and techniques for mass production of true serialised holograms. These requirements having been met, we report for the first time the mass production of fully serialised holograms. The novelty of approach consists of the direct use of product manufacturer’s information as the object in a holographic recording system along with a self-processing photopolymer and modular optical system to facilitate mass production of truly serialised volume holograms. …

A Practical Incremental Learning Framework For Sparse Entity Extraction, Hussein Al-Olimat, Steven Gustafson, Jason Mackay, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan, Amit Sheth

Publications

This work addresses challenges arising from extracting entities from textual data, including the high cost of data annotation, model accuracy, selecting appropriate evaluation criteria, and the overall quality of annotation. We present a framework that integrates Entity Set Expansion (ESE) and Active Learning (AL) to reduce the annotation cost of sparse data and provide an online evaluation method as feedback. This incremental and interactive learning framework allows for rapid annotation and subsequent extraction of sparse data while maintaining high accuracy. We evaluate our framework on three publicly available datasets and show that it drastically reduces the cost of sparse entity …

DYNAMIC control of radiative surface properties enables optimization of thermal management systems for spacecraft, radiative cooling systems, and other applications [1–3]. Various methods of altering the absorption or emission from a surface have been investigated [4–6]. Use of origami-inspired tessellated surfaces to control apparent radiative surface properties is a promising technology [7–9]. Realizing the full potential of tessellated surfaces to dynamically control apparent radiative surface properties requires convenient methods of calculating apparent properties as a function of tessellation geometry and intrinsic radiative surface properties. This Note focuses on the use of geometry to affect total, hemispherical properties of V grooves …

Gold Nanoparticles For Stem Cell Delivery In Myocardial Infarction: Analysis Of Toxicity And Development Of A Cell Culture Platform For Use In An In-Vitro Model Of Mi-Associated Ischemia/Reperfusion, Jeffrey Curran Henson

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this work, the potential for PEGylated gold nanoparticles for use as a platform for stem cell delivery in treatment of myocardial infarction (MI) is preliminarily investigated. Cardiovascular disease is currently the leading cause of death worldwide, with majority of mortality resulting from coronary artery disease and associated MI. The ensuing ischemic conditions resulting from MI cause substantial heart muscle tissue loss and scarring in the heart. Adverse tissue remodeling creates a significant loss in heart function that can result in the formation of cardiac hypertrophy, ventricular dilation and arrythmias. The long-term prognosis of patients who have suffered MI is …

Learning Representations Of Ultrahigh-Dimensional Data For Random Distance-Based Outlier Detection, Guansong Pang, Longbing Cao, Ling Chen, Defu Lian, Huan Liu Aug 2018

Learning Representations Of Ultrahigh-Dimensional Data For Random Distance-Based Outlier Detection, Guansong Pang, Longbing Cao, Ling Chen, Defu Lian, Huan Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Learning expressive low-dimensional representations of ultrahigh-dimensional data, e.g., data with thousands/millions of features, has been a major way to enable learning methods to address the curse of dimensionality. However, existing unsupervised representation learning methods mainly focus on preserving the data regularity information and learning the representations independently of subsequent outlier detection methods, which can result in suboptimal and unstable performance of detecting irregularities (i.e., outliers). This paper introduces a ranking model-based framework, called RAMODO, to address this issue. RAMODO unifies representation learning and outlier detection to learn low-dimensional representations that are tailored for a state-of-the-art outlier detection approach - the random …

Code Smells For Model-View-Controller Architectures, Maurício Aniche, Gabriele Bavota, Christoph Treude, Marco Aurélio Gerosa, Arie Van Deursen Aug 2018

Code Smells For Model-View-Controller Architectures, Maurício Aniche, Gabriele Bavota, Christoph Treude, Marco Aurélio Gerosa, Arie Van Deursen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Previous studies have shown the negative effects that low-quality code can have on maintainability proxies, such as code change- and defect-proneness. One of the symptoms of low-quality code are code smells, defined as sub-optimal implementation choices. While this definition is quite general and seems to suggest a wide spectrum of smells that can affect software systems, the research literature mostly focuses on the set of smells defined in the catalog by Fowler and Beck, reporting design issues that can potentially affect any kind of system, regardless of their architecture (e.g., Complex Class). However, systems adopting a specific architecture (e.g., the …

Exact Processing Of Uncertain Top-K Queries In Multi-Criteria Settings, Kyriakos Mouratidis, Bo Tang Aug 2018

Exact Processing Of Uncertain Top-K Queries In Multi-Criteria Settings, Kyriakos Mouratidis, Bo Tang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Traditional rank-aware processing assumes a dataset that contains available options to cover a specific need (e.g., restaurants, hotels, etc) and users who browse that dataset via top-k queries with linear scoring functions, i.e., by ranking the options according to the weighted sum of their attributes, for a set of given weights. In practice, however, user preferences (weights) may only be estimated with bounded accuracy, or may be inherently uncertain due to the inability of a human user to specify exact weight values with absolute accuracy. Motivated by this, we introduce the uncertain top-k query (UTK). Given uncertain preferences, that is, …

Iterated Local Search Algorithm For The Capacitated Team Orienteering Problem, Aldy Gunawan, Kien Ming Ng, Vincent F. Yu, Gordy Adiprasetyo, Hoong Chuin Lau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper focuses on a recent variant of the Orienteering Problem (OP), namely the Capacitated Team Orienteering Problem (CTOP). In this problem, each node is associated with a demand that needs to be satisfied and a score that need to be collected. Given a set of homogeneous fleet of vehicles, the main objective is to find a path for each available vehicle in order to maximize the total score, without violating the capacity and time budget of each vehicle. We propose an Iterated Local Search algorithm that has been applied in solving various variants of the OP. We propose two …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Cars of the future have been predicted as shared and electric. There has been a rapid growth in electric vehicle (EV) sharing services worldwide in recent years. For EV-sharing platforms to excel, it is essential for them to offer private charging infrastructure for exclusive use that meets the charging demand of their clients. Particularly, they need to plan not only the places to build charging stations, but also the amounts of chargers per station, to maximally satisfy the requirements on global charging coverage and local charging demand. Existing research efforts are either inapplicable for their different problem formulations or are …

Customer Segmentation Using Online Platforms: Isolating Behavioral And Demographic Segments For Persona Creation Via Aggregated User Data, Jisun An, Haewoon Kwak, Soon‑Gyo Jung, Joni Salminen, Bernard J. Jansen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We propose a novel approach for isolating customer segments using online customer data for products that are distributed via online social media platforms. We use non-negative matrix factorization to first identify behavioral customer segments and then to identify demographic customer segments. We employ a methodology for linking the two segments to present integrated and holistic customer segments, also known as personas. Behavioral segments are generated from customer interactions with online content. Demographic segments are generated using the gender, age, and location of these customers. In addition to evaluating our approach, we demonstrate its practicality via a system leveraging these customer …

Electrocatalytic Properties Of Ni-Fe Basedalloys Toward Oxygen Evolution Reaction, Xiaodan Cui Jul 2018

Electrocatalytic Properties Of Ni-Fe Basedalloys Toward Oxygen Evolution Reaction, Xiaodan Cui

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this dissertation, laser-based manufacturing was applied to develop NiFe-based alloys, with focus on their electrochemical characteristics toward oxygen evolution reaction during water electrocatalysis. The targeted electrocatalysts were designed by combining catalysis principles of absorption energy, electronic effect and geometry effect. Firstly, a one-step laser-based manufacturing method was applied to prepare a thin layer of NiFe-based electrodes with varied Ni to Fe ratios to replace high-cost noble metals as the electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Since each Ni has 0.6 d-vacancy and each Fe atom has 2.2 d-vacancies. The alloying of Ni-Fe allows electrons flowing from Ni to Fe, …

Generation Of Orbital Angular Momentum By A Point Defect In Photonic Crystals, Menglin L.N. Chen, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Wei E.I. Sha

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

As an attractive degree of freedom in electromagnetic (EM) waves, the orbital angular momentum (OAM) enables infinite communication channels for both classical and quantum communications. The exploration of OAM generation inspires various designs involving spiral phase plates, antenna arrays, metasurfaces, and computer-generated holograms. In this work, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate an approach to producing OAM carrying EM waves by a point defect in three-dimensional (3D) photonic crystals (PCs). Simultaneous excitation of two vibrational-defect states with an elaborately engineered phase retardation generates a rotational state carrying OAM. Through converting guided waves in a line defect to localized waves in a …

Modeling Of The Veterinary Anesthetic Circuit, Corinne Viloria Duplantis Jul 2018

Modeling Of The Veterinary Anesthetic Circuit, Corinne Viloria Duplantis

LSU Master's Theses

Anesthesia is used to sedate both humans and animals for surgery. In veterinary practice, breathing systems are often used to supply anesthetic gas to the patient. Occasionally, a large amount of pressure can build up in the breathing circuit. This high pressure, if unnoticed, can lead to fatal injury to the lungs of the veterinary patient. The maximum allowable pressure in the anesthetic circuit for small animals is 25 cmH2O or 2450 Pa. As such, it is necessary to monitor oxygen flow rate (ranging from 0.1-4 LPM), pressure, oxygen rate, anesthetic composition, among other variables during an operation. …

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents a thermal gradient gas chromatography (TGGC) system that is implemented on a micro-scale. The GC column is approximately 20 cm long and is fabricated out of silicon with 21 nickel thin-film heaters evenly placed along the length of the column. Computational heat transfer models using ANSYS Mechanical APDL predict heating and cooling rates up to 32,000 deg C/min and 3,600 deg C/min, respectively. These results are verified through testing an experimental silicon channel. A PI controller which uses resistance measurements to calculate thin-film temperature is used for obtaining dynamic thermal gradient control. This controller is shown to …

Characterization Of A Turbulent Boundary Layer In Open Channel Flow Using Particle Image Velocimetry, Mathew James Stanek Jul 2018

Characterization Of A Turbulent Boundary Layer In Open Channel Flow Using Particle Image Velocimetry, Mathew James Stanek

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Turbulent boundary layers are influential in numerous applications (e.g. naval architecture, ocean engineering, sediment transport, etc.), yet considerable knowledge gaps still exist. Boundary layers are regions where transfer of mass, momentum, energy, and heat occur within the interface between a fluid and a solid, or between two fluids. Utilization of optical flow measurement techniques to measure the velocity field with high spatial resolution enables non-intrusive investigation of the complex fluid dynamics of boundary layers. In this study two-dimensional Particle Image Velocimetry was employed to investigate, primarily, the overlap layer of a turbulent boundary layer developed in the recirculating flume facility …

Human-Centered Design Of An Air Quality Feedback System To Promote Healthy Cooking, Chantal Iribagiza Jul 2018

Human-Centered Design Of An Air Quality Feedback System To Promote Healthy Cooking, Chantal Iribagiza

Dissertations and Theses

Household air pollution (HAP) is responsible for almost 4 million premature deaths every year, a burden that is primarily carried by women and children in developing countries. The mortality and morbidity impact of HAP can be significantly alleviated through clean cookstove interventions. However, for these interventions to be effective, the new intervention stove must be a substantially cleaner technology and adoption should be high and sustained over time.

Woody biomass is the fuel of choice in many developing communities, and contributes substantially to HAP. Several organizations have launched clean cooking interventions to address this issue. However, the majority of those …

Characterization Of Gallium Nitride Photoconductive Semiconductor Switches In The Nonlinear Regime, Joseph D. Teague

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

The energy demands of an increasingly electrified world have caused a renewed interest in once dormant fields of research. Photoconductive Semiconductor switches (PCSS) are one of these fields. They theoretically offer high voltage, high current switching in sub cm3 packaging, without the shot to shot variation and bulk of current high-power DC switches such as spark gaps. PCSS are capable of power densities of 109-1010 W/cm3, with electric fields ranging from 105-106 V/cm and current densities from 104-106 A/cm2 [1].

Most PCSS make a trade-off between voltage, …

Misconceptions And The Notional Machine In Very Young Programming Learners, Tony A. Lowe Jul 2018

Misconceptions And The Notional Machine In Very Young Programming Learners, Tony A. Lowe

School of Engineering Education Graduate Student Series

This study looks at very young learners make mistakes and possibly form misunderstanding when learning to programming. A variety of national efforts are extending programming education to younger learners who are materials many adults struggle to learn. For decades literature has captured common misconceptions in using programming constructs (e.g. conditionals, loops, and recursion) in older learners, but early learners may wait years before they tackle these complex concepts. Many model misconceptions as a missing or inaccurate notional machine. The notional machine is an individual’s mental model, representing how a programming language executes on a real device. The notional machine aligns …

Damage Simulation Of Pre-Forming V-Neck Plates With Variations In Material Type, Time And Temperature Using The Taguchi Method, Avita Ayu Permanasari, Rr. Poppy Puspitasari, Kevin Valiant Cahya, Mahfud Ihsan

Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science and Technology (JMEST)

In metal forming, damage can be caused by several factors: load on the workpiece, initial heating temperature, and temperature due to the friction between the die and the material for pre-forming. The metal forming process can be executed in 2 ways, namely by hot working and cold working. During these two types of mechanical working process, the metal undergoes plastic deformation. In hot working, the required deformation force is relatively low, and changes in mechanical properties are also insignificant. In cold working, a higher force is required, but the strength of the metal will increase significantly. The use of simulation …
