Spam Elimination And Bias Correction : Ensuring Label Quality In Crowdsourced Tasks., Lingyu Lyu
Spam Elimination And Bias Correction : Ensuring Label Quality In Crowdsourced Tasks., Lingyu Lyu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Crowdsourcing is proposed as a powerful mechanism for accomplishing large scale tasks via anonymous workers online. It has been demonstrated as an effective and important approach for collecting labeled data in application domains which require human intelligence, such as image labeling, video annotation, natural language processing, etc. Despite the promises, one big challenge still exists in crowdsourcing systems: the difficulty of controlling the quality of crowds. The workers usually have diverse education levels, personal preferences, and motivations, leading to unknown work performance while completing a crowdsourced task. Among them, some are reliable, and some might provide noisy feedback. It is …

Binder Jetting Additive Manufacturing Process Fundamentals And The Resultant Influences On Part Quality., Hadi Miyanaji
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Binder jetting additive manufacturing (BJ-AM) technology is a process by which a part is fabricated layer by layer through depositing liquid binder in the designated regions of each layer until the feature is complete. Due to the use of binder in geometry generation, this process possesses various advantages over the other additive manufacturing technologies including the ability to create colored objects via colored binders, lower cost, lack of heat-induced defects, and its potential capability to print a variety of materials such as metals, sands and ceramics. Although the application of the binder jetting process has been recently reported by different …

Incorporation Of Silica Nanoparticles Into The Underlayer Of Pda/Ptfe Thin Coatings, Adedoyin Abe
Incorporation Of Silica Nanoparticles Into The Underlayer Of Pda/Ptfe Thin Coatings, Adedoyin Abe
Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is one of the most low friction and corrosion resistant solid lubricants. Prior studies have shown that a polydopamine (PDA) underlayer enhances the durability of PTFE thin coating. In this study, 100, 200, and 300 µL of aqueous silica nanoparticle (NP) solutions were added to the PDA deposition solution. The durability and coefficient of friction of PDA/PTFE thin coatings on stainless steel substrates are investigated with and without incorporating the silica NPs. The coatings were tested in dry contact conditions using a Universal Mechanical Tester (UMT) with a ball-on-flat configuration in a reciprocating motion. It was found that …

Theses and Dissertations
Dynamic Cone Penetration Tests for LiquefactionEvaluation of Gravelly SoilsMichael H. TalbotDepartment of Civil and Environmental Engineering, BYUDoctor of PhilosophyIn North American practice, the Becker Penetration Test (BPT) has become the primary field test used to measure penetration resistance of gravelly soils. However, this test is expensive and uncertainties exist regarding correlations and corrections for rod friction. As an alternative, the dynamic penetration test (DPT) developed in China has recently been correlated with liquefaction resistance in gravelly soils. The DPT equipment consists of a 74 mm diameter cone tip driven by a 120 kg hammer with a free fall height of …

Command Governor-Based Adaptive Control For Dynamical Systems With Matched And Unmatched Uncertainties, Metehan Yayla, Ehsan Arabi, Ali Turker Kutay, Tansel Yucelen
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, we propose a command governor-based adaptive control architecture for stabilizing uncertain dynamical systems with not only matched but also unmatched uncertainties and achieving the desired command following performance of a user-defined subset of the accessible states. In our proposed solution, online least-squares solutions for the matched and unmatched parameters are obtained through integration method and they are employed in the adaptive control framework. Specifically, the matched uncertainty is identified and its effect upon the system behavior is entirely attenuated. Moreover, using the unmatched uncertainty approximation obtained through radial basis function neural networks, the command governor signal is …
Using Finite Element Output To Detect Damage In A Steel Frame Model, Ai D. Nguyen
Using Finite Element Output To Detect Damage In A Steel Frame Model, Ai D. Nguyen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Many structural collapses, all over the world, are related to inspection errors. The U.S. I- 35 Bridge in Minneapolis and the Canterbury Television building in New Zealand are a few examples. U.S. infrastructure conditions are poor, scoring a D+ according to ASCE report 2017. When the structures are inspected, the cost is high and service is lost. Inspectors use their trained but subjective judgment, which can lead to errors. Improved inspection techniques are required to reduce the cost, time, and subjectivity.
SHETM (Structural Health EvaluationTM) is an in-house software that has the ability to employ data to improve damage detection …
A Framework For Assessing Sustainability Impacts Of Truck Routing Strategies, Haluk Laman
A Framework For Assessing Sustainability Impacts Of Truck Routing Strategies, Haluk Laman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The impact of freight on our transportation system is further accentuated by the fact that trucks consume greater roadway capacity and therefore cause more significant problems including traffic congestion, delay, crashes, air pollution, fuel consumption, and pavement damage. Assessing the actual effects of truck traffic is a growing need to support the ability to safely and efficiently move goods and people in areas where roadway expansion is not the best option. On one hand, trucks need to efficiently serve commerce and industry, while at the same time their activities need not contribute to a decline in the quality or public …
Nanofiltration Of Perfluorinated Compounds As A Function Of Water Matrix Properties, Hadi Toure
Nanofiltration Of Perfluorinated Compounds As A Function Of Water Matrix Properties, Hadi Toure
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) have been manufactured and used in various industries including food packaging, paintings, and coating industries. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) are the most commonly investigated PFCs that have bioaccumulative properties and a strong persistence in environment. Despite the growing interest in using membrane technology to remove PFOA and PFOS from water, little information is available on the impact of natural water matrices on the removal of PFOA and PFOS when using nanofiltration (NF). The presence of natural organic matter (NOM) and cations (Ca2+ and Mg2+) in water matrices and their interactions with the PFCs …
Rotary Pump Speed Modulation To Produce Pulsatile Flow And Ventricular Volume Unloading., Connor Joseph Smith
Rotary Pump Speed Modulation To Produce Pulsatile Flow And Ventricular Volume Unloading., Connor Joseph Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Background: Continuous-flow (CF) left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) have gained widespread clinical acceptance as a treatment option for advanced heart failure (HF); however, they have also been associated with an increased risk of adverse events, including gastrointestinal bleeding, aortic insufficiency, and hemorrhagic stroke. It has been hypothesized that the increase in adverse event incidence may be due in part to diminished vascular pulsatility and high shear stress when CF-LVADs are operated at fixed speeds. Previous studies have shown that pump speed modulation generates greater levels of pulsatility in rotary pumps than when operated at fixed speeds. The objective of this …

Uncoupling Fermentative Synthesis Of Molecular Hydrogen From Biomass Formation In Thermotoga Maritima, Raghuveer Singh, Derrick White, Yaşar Demirel, Robert Kelley, Kenneth Noll, Paul H. Blum
Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Faculty Publications
When carbohydrates are fermented by the hyperthermophilic anaerobe Thermotoga maritima, molecular hydrogen (H2) is formed in strict proportion to substrate availability. Excretion of the organic acids acetate and lactate provide an additional sink for removal of excess reductant. However, mechanisms controlling energy management of these metabolic pathways are largely unexplored. To investigate this topic, transient gene inactivation was used to block lactate production as a strategy to produce spontaneous mutant cell lines that overproduced H2 through mutation of unpredicted genetic targets. Single-crossover homologous chromosomal recombination was used to disrupt lactate dehydrogenase (encoded by ldh) with …
A Method For Characterization Of Single-Event Latchup Technologies As A Function Of Geometric Variation, Matt Joplin
A Method For Characterization Of Single-Event Latchup Technologies As A Function Of Geometric Variation, Matt Joplin
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology is the dominant integrated circuit (IC) technology in modern electronics systems. As CMOS comprises of p-channel and n-channel transistors, there are parasitic PNPN paths that act as cross-coupled bipolar transistors capable of creating low-impedance paths between the power supply rails known as the “latchup” state. Latchup is destructive and requires a power cycle to restore operation. Latchup can be stimulated by ionizing radiation such as a high-energy proton or heavy-ions from deep space, resulting in a significant vulnerability in CMOS space systems. The sensitivity of an IC to single-event latchup (SEL) depends on various process parameters …
Modeling And Validations Of Control Parameters For Material Extrusion-Based Additive Manufacturing Of Thixotropic Aluminum Alloys., Lars Herhold
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Additive Manufacturing (AM) with metals has been accomplished mainly through powder bed fusion processes. Initial experiments and simulations using Material Extrusion Additive Manufacturing (MEAM) have been performed by various researchers especially using low melting alloys. Recently Stratasys Inc. submitted a patent application for the use of their Material Extrusion technology also called Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) where they describe the process using thixotropic semi-solid alloys. Currently this process using semi-solid, engineering type alloys such as A356 or THIXALLOY 540 aluminum have not been researched to evaluate the control parameters. This research combines the in-depth knowledge of applying thixotropic semi-solid aluminum …
Particle Slip Velocity Influences Inertial Focusing Of Particles In Curved Microchannels, Saurabh Deshpande, Phanindra Tallapragada
Particle Slip Velocity Influences Inertial Focusing Of Particles In Curved Microchannels, Saurabh Deshpande, Phanindra Tallapragada
Publications
Size based separation and identification of particles in microfluidics through purely hydrodynamic means has gained significant interest due to a number of possible biomedical applications. Curved micro-channels, particularly spiral micro-channels with rectangular cross-section and the dynamics of particles in such channels have been extensively researched to achieve size based separation of particles. In this paper we present evidence that sheds new light on the dynamics of particles in such curved channels; that a unique particle slip velocity is associated with the focusing positions in the cross sections, which leads to a balance of forces. Our experiments therefore imply that the …

ANSI/AGMA 2003-B97, ISO 10300 standards and a new contact stress model are used to estimate and compare contact stresses in some theoretical straight bevel gear pairs. The contact stress expressions in the different gear standards and new model are formatted to highlight the similarity and differences. The power range of 10 to 15,000 kW, backend modules of 2.5 to 25 mm and backend pitch velocities of 4.58 to 25.37 m/s are covered. The results indicate that the percentage differences between the new contact stress and AGMA models are in the range of 2.22% to 7.40%. These differences are small but …
Biofidelic Piezoresistive Sandwich Composites, Nengda Jiang
Biofidelic Piezoresistive Sandwich Composites, Nengda Jiang
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Silicone based biofidelic surrogates are being used in many biomedical applications; e.g. to understand the body injury mechanisms, evaluate protective equipment like helmets and armors. Apart from matching the mechanical behavior of bodily tissues, there is an increasing requirement for these materials to be electrically conductive and piezoresistive to facilitate direct instrumentation. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are a possible filler to impart electrical conductivity and piezoresistivity to silicone biofidelic materials. A sandwich structure of silicone and CNT sheet, comprising two dielectric facesheets and a highly conductive core layer has added advantages of raising the dielectric permittivity and suppressing dielectric loss.

Experimental And Numerical Investigation On The Bond Strength Of Self-Sensing Composite Joints, Shafique Ahmed, Thomas Schumacher, Jennifer Mcconnell, Erik T. Thostenson
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Laboratory experiments demonstrate that a novel carbon nanotube (CNT)-based sensing layer embedded in the bondline of an adhesively bonded structural joint can detect and monitor deformation and damage progression of the adhesive layer. In this study, experimental and numerical investigations were performed to identify any effect of an embedded CNT-based sensing layer on the bond strength of that joint. To evaluate the mechanical behavior of such a bondline configuration, two sets of single-lap specimens, with and without sensing layer, were prepared and tested to determine the bond strengths of the respective types. Two-dimensional digital image correlation (2D DIC) was utilized …

Time Evolution Of Ecog Network Connectivity In Patients With Refractory Epilepsy, Michael J. Selesko
Masters Theses
Epilepsy is a common neurological disorder that causes recurrent, unprovoked seizures. Focal, refractory epilepsy is characterized by seizures that start in a specific area in the brain and do not respond to antiepileptic medication. This study was conducted to characterize the connectivity of the focal brain region where seizures originate, known as the epileptogenic zone. Connectivity was measured from electrocorticogram (ECoG) recordings, during seizure events, using information theoretic measures mutual information (MI) and (TE). MI is the amount of information shared between two discrete random variables. TE is the directed information transfer between two discrete random variables. MI provides information …
A Case Study On Application Of Fuzzy Logic Based Controller For Peak Load Shaving In A Typical Household's Per Day Electricity Consumption, Krishna P. Sharma
A Case Study On Application Of Fuzzy Logic Based Controller For Peak Load Shaving In A Typical Household's Per Day Electricity Consumption, Krishna P. Sharma
Masters Theses
The cost of electricity for consumers depends on the cost of generation, transmission, and distribution of power. The electrical load consumed by consumers per day is not constant throughout the day. The utilities must be capable of meeting the load demand, which means they must have enough electricity generation potential and necessary infrastructure. This cost is significant. However, the revenue they generate will only be for the actual use of electricity by the consumers. In general, the electrical power generation is done in stages, always generating a base load. As demand changes throughout the day, additional stages of power generation …

Identification Of The Seizure Onset Zone By Auto-Regressive Model Residual Modulation Applied To Intracranial Eeg And Its Correlation To Channels With High Preponderances Of Detected Hfos, Allison L. Rogutich
Masters Theses
The objective of this thesis was to examine the ability of the Autoregressive Model Residual Modulation (ARRm) method to identify the Seizure Onset Zone (SOZ) in intracranial electroencephalogram (iEEG) of patients with refractory epilepsy. Patients who have not become seizure free after multiple trials of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) may seek treatment through epilepsy surgery. Cortical electrodes are implanted directly on the cerebral cortex, then iEEG is collected. A specialized neurologist reviews the iEEG, then in consultation with the neurosurgeon, the SOZ is determined and areas of the brain may be chosen for resection. The success rate of epilepsy surgery varies, …

Finite-Time Anti-Synchronization Of Memristive Stochastic Bam Neural Networks With Probabilistic Time-Varying Delays, Manman Yuan, Weiping Wang, Xiong Luo, Linlin Liu, Wenbing Zhao
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
This paper investigates the drive-response finite-time anti-synchronization for memristive bidirectional associative memory neural networks (MBAMNNs). Firstly, a class of MBAMNNs with mixed probabilistic time-varying delays and stochastic perturbations is first formulated and analyzed in this paper. Secondly, an nonlinear control law is constructed and utilized to guarantee drive-response finite-time anti-synchronization of the neural networks. Thirdly, by employing some inequality technique and constructing an appropriate Lyapunov function, some anti-synchronization criteria are derived. Finally, a number simulation is provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed mechanism.
Methods And Metrics To Measure And Predict The Social Impact Of Engineered Products, Phillip Douglas Stevenson
Methods And Metrics To Measure And Predict The Social Impact Of Engineered Products, Phillip Douglas Stevenson
Theses and Dissertations
More than ever before, engineers are creating products for developing countries. One of the purposes of these products is to improve the consumer's quality of life. Currently, there is no established method of measuring the social impact of these types of products. As a result, engineers have used their own metrics to assess their product's impact, if at all. Some of the common metrics used include products sold and revenue, which measure the financial success of a product without recognizing the social successes or failures it might have. In this thesis I introduce a potential metric, the Product Impact Metric …
Efficient Incorporation Of Fatigue Damage Constraints In Wind Turbine Blade Optimization, Bryce Taylor Ingersoll
Efficient Incorporation Of Fatigue Damage Constraints In Wind Turbine Blade Optimization, Bryce Taylor Ingersoll
Theses and Dissertations
Improving the wind turbine blade design has a significant effect on the efficiency of the wind turbine. This is a challenging multi-disciplinary optimization problem. During the blade design process, the aerodynamic shapes, sizing of the structural members, and material composition must all be determined and optimized. Some previous blade design methods incorporate the wind turbine's static response with an added safety factor to account for neglected dynamic effects. Others incorporate the dynamic response, but in general is limited to a few design cases. By not fully incorporating the dynamic response of the wind turbine, the final turbine blade design is …

Developing Optimization Techniques For Logistical Tendering Using Reverse Combinatorial Auctions, Jennifer Kiser
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In business-to-business logistical sourcing events, companies regularly use a bidding process known as tendering in the procurement of transportation services from third-party providers. Usually in the form of an auction involving a single buyer and one or more sellers, the buyer must make decisions regarding with which suppliers to partner and how to distribute the transportation lanes and volume among its suppliers; this is equivalent to solving the optimization problem commonly referred to as the Winner Determination Problem. In order to take into account the complexities inherent to the procurement problem, such as considering a supplier’s network, economies of scope, …
