In Vitro Growth Of Osteoblasts On Poly Lactic-Co-Glycolic Acid Scaffolds Created Via Gas Foaming, Matthew James Thomas

Master's Theses

This study analyzed the feasibility of using gas foaming to create Poly Lactic-co-Glycolic Acid (PLGA) scaffolds for use as a substrate in bone tissue engineering and set out to determine whether the presence of osteoblasts on these scaffolds enhanced their material stiffness. The process of bone formation involves osteoblasts depositing extracellular matrix and calcifying this matrix with calcium phosphate crystals (Hasegawa et al., 2017) and pits between 30-40μm in diameter on tissue engineering scaffold surfaces have been shown to best promote osteogenic activity in the presence of bone-forming cells (Halai et al., 2014).The scaffolds were determined to contain pits within …

Vanishing Connections: Application Resiliency Through Cross-Network Tcp Migration, David Elliott

Theses and Dissertations

Computer applications are subject to a plethora of security challenges, ranging from concerns over network monitoring to avoiding expensive and damaging intrusion and compromise. A vast number of techniques exist to mitigate applications’ vulnerability to these threats: network policies can be adjusted, traffic can be rerouted, firewalls can be installed, hosts can be hardened, applications can be patched. A large body of research exists to improve the security of hosts in this context. However, for applications that have already been the subject of damaging attacks, we no longer focus primarily on security, but shift to resiliency, or the capacity of …

The Study Of Reconfigurable Antennas And Associated Circuitry, Kansheng Yang Sep 2018

The Study Of Reconfigurable Antennas And Associated Circuitry, Kansheng Yang

Doctoral

This research focuses on the design of pattern reconfigurable antennas and the associated circuitry. The proposed pattern reconfigurable antenna designs benefit from advantages such as maximum pattern diversity and optimum switching circuits to realise 5G reconfigurable antennas. Whereas MIMO based solutions can provide increased channel capacity, they demand high computational capability and power consumption due to multiple channel processing. This prevents their use in many applications most notably in the Internet of Things where power consumption is of key importance. A switched-beam diversity allows an energy-efficient solution improving the link budget even for small low-cost battery operated IoT/sensor network applications. …

Temporal And Spatial Effects Of Shock Overpressure On Blood-Brain Barrier Permeability In Blast-Induced Traumatic Brain Injury, Matthew Joseph Kuriakose

Dissertations

Exposure to shock waves is the leading cause of traumatic brain injury (TBI) in military personnel and blast-induced TBI (bTBI) is considered the signature wound in recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Many researchers attempt to replicate field-relevant shock waves in laboratory settings through the use of gas-driven shock tubes in order to investigate the generation and propagation of shock waves and also explore possible mechanisms of bTBI. Among several injury mechanisms of bTBI, damage to the blood-brain barrier (BBB) has been identified as a potential candidate and has been the focus of several clinical and experimental investigations aimed to …

Cellulose-Derived Glycosaminoglycan Mimetic For Use In Cartilage Tissue Engineering Strategies, Roseline Dominic Menezes

Dissertations

Articular cartilage has limited healing and self-repair capability due to the absence of vasculature, lymphatic vessels, and nerves. Damage to articular cartilage becomes irreversible leading to formation of osteoarthritis that could severely degrade a person's quality of life. Approximately, 5-10% of cartilage tissue is made up of glycosaminoglycans (GAG), which sequester growth factors as well as provide structural integrity to the native cartilage tissue. Transforming growth factor-beta3 (TGF-β3) is an important growth factor for inducing chondrogenesis in mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Bioavailability of TGF-β3 plays a critical role in cartilage repair both in vitro and in vivo. This study evaluates …

Decoupling Information And Connectivity Via Information-Centric Transport, Hila Ben Abraham, Jyoti Parwatikar, John Dehart, Adam Drescher, Patrick Crowley Aug 2018

Decoupling Information And Connectivity Via Information-Centric Transport, Hila Ben Abraham, Jyoti Parwatikar, John Dehart, Adam Drescher, Patrick Crowley

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Research

The power of Information-Centric Networking (ICN) architectures lies in their abstraction for communication --- the request for named data. This abstraction promises that applications can choose to operate only in the information plane, agnostic to the mechanisms implemented in the connectivity plane. However, despite this powerful promise, the information and connectivity planes are presently coupled in today's incarnations of leading ICNs by a core architectural component, the forwarding strategy. Presently, this component is not sustainable: it implements both the information and connectivity mechanisms without specifying who should choose a forwarding strategy --- an application developer or the network operator. In …

An Initial Study Of The Catalytic Reforming Of Crop Oil‐Derived 1‐Alkenes With Hzsm‐5 To Aromatic Hydrocarbons, Shelby Amsley‐Benzie, Swapnil Fegade, Brian Tande, Alena Kubatova, Evguenii Kozliak, Wayne Seames

Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications

This study explored the production of aromatic hydrocarbons from the longer‐chain alkenes produced by the pyrolysis/cracking of crop oils. 1‐Tetradecene, serving as a model compound for these alkenes, was reformed in a batch reactor with a HZSM‐5 catalyst to produce a liquid hydrocarbon mixture with a high‐aromatic content. These reactions resulted in a >99% conversion of the 1‐tetradecene feedstock with a yield of up to 22 wt% of aromatic hydrocarbons. Surprisingly, isomers of C3‐substituted benzenes along with xylenes and diaromatics (lower homologs of alkyl‐substituted indanes and naphthalenes) were the main aromatic products rather than their lower‐molecular‐weight (MW) homologs, benzene, toluene, …

Agent Based Model To Estimate Time To Restoration Of Storm-Induced Power Outages, Tara Walsh, Thomas Layton, David Wanik, Jonathan Mellor

Research, Publications & Creative Work

Extreme weather can cause severe damage and widespread power outages across utility service areas. The restoration process can be long and costly and emergency managers may have limited computational resources to optimize the restoration process. This study takes an agent based modeling (ABM) approach to optimize the utility storm recovery process in Connecticut. The ABM is able to replicate past storm recoveries and can test future case scenarios. We found that parameters such as the number of outages, repair time range and the number of utility crews working can substantially impact the estimated time to restoration (ETR). Other parameters such …

Prediction Of Flood Hydrograph In Small River Catchments Using System Modelling Approach, Ahmed Nasr, Zeinab Bedri, Loreta Ramanauske

Conference papers

Floods remain to be one of the natural catastrophic disasters with serious adverse social and economic implications on individuals and communities all around the world. In Ireland, frequency of flood events have increased dramatically during the last forty years and is expected to continue to rise primarily due to changes in rainfall and temperature patterns as a result of the global climate change. Small river catchments are usually vulnerable to different types of flooding particularly those associated with “monster” rainfall events, which are characterised by short durations and high intensities. Therefore accurate prediction of flood hydrographs resulting from these rainfall …

Investigation Of Flow Mechanisms In Gas-Assisted Gravity Drainage Process, Iskandar Dzulkarnain Aug 2018

Investigation Of Flow Mechanisms In Gas-Assisted Gravity Drainage Process, Iskandar Dzulkarnain

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this study we investigate displacement mechanism for oil recovered using Gas- Assisted Gravity Drainage (GAGD) method. For a typical oil recovery under gravity drainage, the recovery profile can be characterized by an initial bulk flow which occurs rapidly and a later film flow that extends for a longer duration. It is the latter period where film spreading, the ability of oil to spread above water in the presence of gas, is identified as the displacement mechanism responsible for recovering the remaining oil in gravity drainage process. Literature survey indicates that mathematical models for gravity drainage do not account for …

Geosynthetic Reinforcement For Unpaved Roads – Recent Experience, Ciaran Reilly, Keith Nell

Conference papers

Modern geosynthetic materials, including geotextiles and geogrids, are often used to generate savings in materials and time on construction projects. Geosynthetics are used as reinforcement and separation membranes for unpaved roads that are supported by low strength or unsuitable subgrades. When geosynthetics are used, unsuitable subgrades can be left in place and reduced thicknesses of road base are required. This paper reviews the design methods currently used to build geosynthetic reinforced unpaved roads and documents the validation of these design approaches. A number of recent case histories of projects in the UK and Ireland are outlined, showing the use of …
