Mechanisms Of Impaired Motor Unit Firing Behavior In The Vastus Lateralis Muscle After Stroke, Spencer Murphy
Mechanisms Of Impaired Motor Unit Firing Behavior In The Vastus Lateralis Muscle After Stroke, Spencer Murphy
Dissertations (1934 -)
The purpose of this dissertation research project was to examine the role of impaired motor unit firing behavior on force generation after a stroke. We studied the relationship between intrinsic motoneuron properties and inhibitory sensory pathways to deficient motoneuron activity in the vastus lateralis muscle after a stroke. Individuals with stroke often have deficits with force generation and volitional relaxation. Current models of impaired force output after a stroke focus primarily on the pathology within the corticospinal pathway because of decreased descending drive. Though this is an important aspect of deficient motoneuron output, it is incomplete because motoneurons receive other …
Dynamic Lifetime Reliability And Energy Management For Network-On-Chip Based Chip Multiprocessors, Milad Ghorbani Moghaddam
Dynamic Lifetime Reliability And Energy Management For Network-On-Chip Based Chip Multiprocessors, Milad Ghorbani Moghaddam
Dissertations (1934 -)
In this dissertation, we study dynamic reliability management (DRM) and dynamic energy management (DEM) techniques for network-on-chip (NoC) based chip multiprocessors (CMPs). In the first part, the proposed DRM algorithm takes both the computational and the communication components of the CMP into consideration and combines thread migration and dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) as the two primary techniques to change the CMP operation. The goal is to increase the lifetime reliability of the overall system to the desired target with minimal performance degradation. The simulation results on a variety of benchmarks on 16 and 64 core NoC based CMP …
Hypothesis Paper: Mechanism For Primary Blast Induced Traumatic Brain Injury With Minimal Head Motion, Charles F. Babbs
Hypothesis Paper: Mechanism For Primary Blast Induced Traumatic Brain Injury With Minimal Head Motion, Charles F. Babbs
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Working Papers
Transit of the human skull by blast waves produces diffuse brain injury. The exact mechanisms are unknown. This paper describes plausible mechanisms in which steep intracranial pressure gradients, demonstrated in prior computational models of blast-skull interaction, produce subsequent deformation and motion of the whole brain within the skull, without obvious movement of the head. Equations of motion are derived to describe the acceleration, velocity, and relative position of both the skull and the brain in response to known extracranial and intracranial pressures both during and several hundred milliseconds after blast wave passage. A finite element model is solved to visualize …

Indutivo: Contact-Based, Object-Driven Interactions With Inductive Sensing, Jun Gong, Xin Yang, Teddy Seyed, Josh Urban Davis, Xing-Dong Yang
Dartmouth Scholarship
We present Indutivo, a contact-based inductive sensing technique for contextual interactions. Our technique recognizes conductive objects (metallic primarily) that are commonly found in households and daily environments, as well as their individual movements when placed against the sensor. These movements include sliding, hinging, and rotation. We describe our sensing principle and how we designed the size, shape, and layout of our sensor coils to optimize sensitivity, sensing range, recognition and tracking accuracy. Through several studies, we also demonstrated the performance of our proposed sensing technique in environments with varying levels of noise and interference conditions. We conclude by presenting demo …
Battery-Free Eye Tracker On Glasses, Tianxing Li, Xia Zhou
Battery-Free Eye Tracker On Glasses, Tianxing Li, Xia Zhou
Dartmouth Scholarship
This paper presents a battery-free wearable eye tracker that tracks both the 2D position and diameter of a pupil based on its light absorption property. With a few near-infrared (NIR) lights and photodiodes around the eye, NIR lights sequentially illuminate the eye from various directions while photodiodes sense spatial patterns of reflected light, which are used to infer pupil’s position and diameter on the fly via a lightweight inference algorithm. The system also exploits characteristics of different eye movement stages and adjusts its sensing and computation accordingly for further energy savings. A prototype is built with off-the-shelf hardware components and …

Exploring Experiential Learning Model And Risk Management Process For An Undergraduate Software Architecture Course, Eng Lieh Ouh, Yunghans Irawan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper shares our insights on exploring theexperiential learning model and risk management process todesign an undergraduate software architecture course. The keychallenge for undergraduate students to appreciate softwarearchitecture design is usually their limited experience in thesoftware industry. In software architecture, the high-level designprinciples are heuristics lacking the absoluteness of firstprinciples which for inexperienced undergraduate students, thisis a frustrating divergence from what they used to value. From aneducator's perspective, teaching software architecture requirescontending with the problem of how to express this level ofabstraction practically and also make the learning realistic. Inthis paper, we propose a model adapting the concepts ofexperiential learning …

Efficient Attribute-Based Encryption With Blackbox Traceability, Shengmin Xu, Guomin Yang, Yi Mu, Ximeng Liu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Traitor tracing scheme can be used to identify a decryption key is illegally used in public-key encryption. In CCS’13, Liu et al. proposed an attribute-based traitor tracing (ABTT) scheme with blackbox traceability which can trace decryption keys embedded in a decryption blackbox/device rather than tracing a well-formed decryption key. However, the existing ABTT schemes with blackbox traceability are based on composite order group and the size of the decryption key depends on the policies and the number of system users. In this paper, we revisit blackbox ABTT and introduce a new primitive called attribute-based set encryption (ABSE) based on key-policy …

Enhancing The Durability And The Service Life Of Asphalt Pavements Through Innovative Light-Induced Self-Healing Materials, Marwa Hassan
Publications
The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of a new generation of Ultraviolet (UV) light-induced selfhealing polymers in enhancing the durability and self-healing properties of asphalt mixtures. Self-healing polymers were successfully synthesized in the laboratory and were characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). In addition, Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) results showed that the synthesized polymers achieved the required thermal stability to resist asphalt mixture production processes. Viscosity results showed that addition of 5% Recycled Asphalt Shingle (RAS) and/or 20% Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) caused an increase in the viscosity of the binder blends. However, a reduction in …

Modeling Sulfate Attack In Modern Concrete For Building Sustainable And Resilient Infrastructure, Zachary Grasley
Modeling Sulfate Attack In Modern Concrete For Building Sustainable And Resilient Infrastructure, Zachary Grasley
Publications
External sulfate attack is a complex phenomenon and is manifested in the form of large expansion, cracking, and spalling depending on the exposure solution and material constituent properties. Several models were developed in the past to demonstrate sulfate attack mechanisms that account for the diffusion of sulfate ions into the porous concrete and the successive deformation triggered by the chemical reaction and precipitation of expansive agents. However, none of these models accounts for the effect of the migration of solvent water from the low solute concentration solution to high solute concentration solution driven by the osmotic pressure. Osmotic pressure is …

In-Situ Mechanical Characterization For Compacted Aggregates, Douglas Cortes, Paola Bandini
Publications
The evaluation of compacted unbound aggregate layers is perhaps the most common undertaking in transportation-related projects. The assessment of compaction compliance in engineered fills, subgrades, subbases, and bases in roadways and railways is central to ensure longevity of ground transportation infrastructure. In many cases, premature failures in roadways that originate in the unbound aggregate layers can be traced back to inadequate compaction. These failures are preventable, provided the problem areas can be identified by a suitable field test during construction. The most widely used method for compaction assessment during construction is the nuclear density gauge (NDG) test. While the device …

Use Of Rice Hull Ash (Rha) As A Sustainable Source Of Construction Material, Zahid Hossain, Ashraf Elsayed
Publications
With the imminent shortage of natural resources, the need to find sustainable development is the highest in recent history. Therefore, this study examines the potential uses of Rice Hull Ash (RHA) as a sustainable cementitious material (SCM) in preparation of concrete. This study also assesses the use of RHA as an alternative of commonly used polymers in preparing high-grade asphalt binders. RHA is a potential sustainable solution because it is currently being treated as an agricultural waste material, yet its high silica content makes it a potential construction material. Three different sizes of RHA (600 µm, 150 µm, and 44 …

Thermochemical Conversion Of Biomass: Detailed Gasification And Near-Burner Co-Firing Measurements, Jacob B. Beutler
Theses and Dissertations
An increasing emphasis on mitigating global climate change (global warming) over the last few decades has created interest in a broad range of sustainable or alternative energy systems to replace fossil fuel combustion. Biomass, when harvested responsibly, is a renewable fuel with many uses in replacing fossil fuels. Cofiring biomass with coal in traditional large-scale coal power plants represents one of the lowest risk, least costly, near-term methods of CO2 mitigation. Simultaneously, it is one of the most efficient and inexpensive uses of biomass. Alternatively, biomass can be transformed into useful products through gasification to produce clean syngas for …

Phasorsec: Protocol Security Filters For Wide Area Measurement Systems, Prashant Anantharaman, Kartik Palani, Rafael Brantley, Sergey Bratus, Sean W. Smith
Dartmouth Scholarship
The addition of synchrophasors to the power grid to improve observability comes at the cost of an increased attack surface: the wide area measurement system. A common source of zero-days, that can be used to exploit the system, is improper input validation. The strict availability and timing requirements of the grid make it critical that input validation be done right and in a timely fashion. PhasorSec is a hardened security filter for the synchrophasor communication protocol, C37.118. PhasorSec is built using language theoretic principles which treat all input as a language with a specific grammar that defines what input must …

Mechanical Engineering Design Project Class
The goal of our design group was to make a lacrosse ball passer that could be used in a team practice or individual setting. Wayne Jaekle, WashU’s head lacrosse coach defined major customer needs as producing a consistent pass speed and angle, an interactive interface allowing an automatic time interval between passes, and being easy to load. These needs lead to our main design goals: 1. A ball capacity of 30, 2. A minimum pass speed of 30 mph, and 3. A 5 second time interval between passes. Mock ups and brainstorming exercises led to our team’s selection of a …

This document presents our solution for the ASME pick-and-place design competition. In brief, the challenge is to collect balls from an arena and return them to a ‘home base’. The specifics of the competition are elaborated on within. The document walks through the design decisions that went into the prototype; the Goalkeeper concept that we ultimately landed on best solved the problems presented by the challenge statement as interpreted by our customer, Dr. James Jackson Potter. Several of the design choices were made by applying mathematical relationships, with the math and results included to illuminate our methods. We include a …

Each year, Americans waste millions of pounds of textiles in the form of clothing that is thrown away. Professor Mary Ruppert-Stroescu from the Sam Fox School of Design seeks to combat this by reusing the old fabric from discarded clothes and creating new, fashionable clothing. To do this, her and her students cut up donated shirts into small squares, by hand, using scissors and fabric cutters and sew them together using a method developed by her.. This process is very time consuming and limits the commercial viability of this process. The T-shirt Cutter design, detailed below, has the potential to …

For our project, we designed a canister vehicle that fits the design specifications of the ARLISS competition. For the ARLISS competition, the vehicles are loaded into a rocket, launched approximately 10,000 feet into the air, released, and then must autonomously navigate to a predetermined target on the ground. Because of our time restraint, we are focused on designing a vehicle of the correct dimensions (a maximum mass of 1050g, a maximum diameter of 146mm, and a maximum height of 240mm) that can simply travel on the ground over multiple types of terrain. Additionally, we designed a parachute release mechanism so …

Electrostatic Design And Conditioning Of A Triple Point Junction Shield For A −200 Kv Dc High Voltage Photogun, G. Palacios-Serrano, F. Hannon, C. Hernandez-Garcia, M. Poelker, H. Baumgart
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Nuclear physics experiments performed at the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at the Jefferson Lab require a DC high voltage photogun to generate polarized electron beams from GaAs photocathodes. The photogun uses a tapered ceramic insulator that extends into the vacuum chamber and mechanically holds the cathode electrode. Increasing the operating voltage from nominal −130 kV to −200 kV will provide lower beam emittance, better transmission through injector apertures, and improved photocathode lifetime. This desire to increase the photogun operating voltage led to the design of a triple-point-junction shield electrode which minimizes the electric field at the delicate insulator-metal-vacuum …

Source code terms such as method names and variable types are often different from conceptual words mentioned in a search query. This vocabulary mismatch problem can make code search inefficient. In this paper, we present COde voCABUlary (CoCaBu), an approach to resolving the vocabulary mismatch problem when dealing with free-form code search queries. Our approach leverages common developer questions and the associated expert answers to augment user queries with the relevant, but missing, structural code entities in order to improve the performance of matching relevant code examples within large code repositories. To instantiate this approach, we build GitSearch, a code …
