Electric Bicycle: Not Quite A Motorcycle, Not Even A Scooter, Joseph Jackson, Erik Johansen, Jeremy Thorpe

Electrical and Computer Engineering

This bicycle was intended as a method of learning and applying power electronics methods and skills. Power is transferred from a 24V battery to a 3-phase brushless DC motor. We also wanted to achieve regenerative braking, which charges the battery with the voltage produced in the motor when braking. In order to achieve this, we built a bi-directional boost converter to increase the voltage from 24V at the battery to 50V at the input of a 3-phase inverter. We also devised the control schemes that ensured proper operation of each subsystem within the design.

Performance Based Contracting For The Manufacturing Industry By Using Integrated Platform And Dynamic Pricing Model, Lindawati, Aldy Gunawan Jan 2016

Performance Based Contracting For The Manufacturing Industry By Using Integrated Platform And Dynamic Pricing Model, Lindawati, Aldy Gunawan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Although Performance Based Contracting (PBC) concept is not totally new, the PBC adaptation in Industrial Machinery and Components (IMC) manufacturing, which produces high-value and long life machineries, is rather slow and it is done with extra caution. Three main concerns for manufacturers to implement PBC are the investment cost, the maintenance cost and possible revenue loss. To handle these concerns and accelerate the PBC implementation, we propose an integrated platform that consists of three components: dynamic pricing, sensor data feeding and machinery monitoring. We model the dynamic pricing as an optimization problem and propose Genetic Algorithm to solve the problem. …

Electrophysiology Of Basal Ganglia (Bg) Circuitry And Dystonia As A Model Of Motor Control Dysfunction, Deepak Kumbhare

Theses and Dissertations

The basal ganglia (BG) is a complex set of heavily interconnected nuclei located in the central part of the brain that receives inputs from the several areas of the cortex and projects via the thalamus back to the prefrontal and motor cortical areas. Despite playing a significant part in multiple brain functions, the physiology of the BG and associated disorders like dystonia remain poorly understood. Dystonia is a devastating condition characterized by ineffective, twisting movements, prolonged co-contractions and contorted postures. Evidences suggest that it occurs due to abnormal discharge patterning in BG-thalamocortocal (BGTC) circuitry. The central purpose of this study …

Electric Field Controlled Strain Induced Switching Of Magnetization Of Galfenol Nanomagnets In Magneto-Electrically Coupled Multiferroic Stack, Hasnain Ahmad Jan 2016

Electric Field Controlled Strain Induced Switching Of Magnetization Of Galfenol Nanomagnets In Magneto-Electrically Coupled Multiferroic Stack, Hasnain Ahmad

Theses and Dissertations

The ability to control the bi-stable magnetization states of shape anisotropic single domain nanomagnets has enormous potential for spawning non-volatile and energy-efficient computing and signal processing systems. One of the most energy efficient switching methods is to adopt a system of a 2-phase multiferroic nanomagnet, where a voltage applied on the piezoelectric layer generates a strain in it and the strain is elastically transferred to the magnetostrictive nanomagnet which rotates the magnetization states of the nanomagnet at room temperature via the converse magnet-electric effect. Recently, it has been demonstrated that the magnetization of a Co nanomagnet can be switched between …

Beyond Conventional C-Plane Gan-Based Light Emitting Diodes: A Systematic Exploration Of Leds On Semi-Polar Orientations, Morteza Monavarian

Theses and Dissertations

Despite enormous efforts and investments, the efficiency of InGaN-based green and yellow-green light emitters remains relatively low, and that limits progress in developing full color display, laser diodes, and bright light sources for general lighting. The low efficiency of light emitting devices in the green-to-yellow spectral range, also known as the “Green Gap”, is considered a global concern in the LED industry. The polar c-plane orientation of GaN, which is the mainstay in the LED industry, suffers from polarization-induced separation of electrons and hole wavefunctions (also known as the “quantum confined Stark effect”) and low indium incorporation efficiency that …

The Modification Of Silica Aerogel Materials For Contemporary Use, Lauren White Jan 2016

The Modification Of Silica Aerogel Materials For Contemporary Use, Lauren White

Theses and Dissertations

Aerogel materials have had limited utility due to their fragility, geometrical limitations, fabrication costs and protracted fabrication times. The objective of this project was to eliminate these limitations. Native, cross-linked and hybrid aerogel monoliths have been fabricated using a newly developed one-pot method without the need for solvent exchange. The key to this technique is the use of an ethanol–water azeotrope mixture, which contains 4.4% water by volume, as both a gelation and supercritical drying solvent. The small water content allows for drying at temperatures close to the supercritical temperature of the dry solvent, where reactions such as silica dissolution …

Hybrid Straintronics-Spintronics: Energy-Efficient Non-Volatile Devices For Boolean And Non-Boolean Computation, Ayan K. Biswas Jan 2016

Hybrid Straintronics-Spintronics: Energy-Efficient Non-Volatile Devices For Boolean And Non-Boolean Computation, Ayan K. Biswas

Theses and Dissertations

Research in future generation computing is focused on reducing energy dissipation while maintaining the switching speed in a binary operation to continue the current trend of increasing transistor-density according to Moore’s law. Unlike charge-based CMOS technology, spin-based nanomagnetic technology, based on switching bistable magnetization of single domain shape-anisotropic nanomagnets, has the potential to achieve ultralow energy dissipation due to the fact that no charge motion is directly involved in switching. However, switching of magnetization has not been any less dissipative than switching transistors because most magnet switching schemes involve generating a current to produce a magnetic field, or spin transfer …

Optimizing Virtual Machine I/O Performance In Cloud Environments, Tao Lu Jan 2016

Optimizing Virtual Machine I/O Performance In Cloud Environments, Tao Lu

Theses and Dissertations

Maintaining closeness between data sources and data consumers is crucial for workload I/O performance. In cloud environments, this kind of closeness can be violated by system administrative events and storage architecture barriers. VM migration events are frequent in cloud environments. VM migration changes VM runtime inter-connection or cache contexts, significantly degrading VM I/O performance. Virtualization is the backbone of cloud platforms. I/O virtualization adds additional hops to workload data access path, prolonging I/O latencies. I/O virtualization overheads cap the throughput of high-speed storage devices and imposes high CPU utilizations and energy consumptions to cloud infrastructures. To maintain the closeness between …

A Reused Distance Based Analysis And Optimization For Gpu Cache, Dongwei Wang Jan 2016

A Reused Distance Based Analysis And Optimization For Gpu Cache, Dongwei Wang

Theses and Dissertations

As a throughput-oriented device, Graphics Processing Unit(GPU) has already integrated with cache, which is similar to CPU cores. However, the applications in GPGPU computing exhibit distinct memory access patterns. Normally, the cache, in GPU cores, suffers from threads contention and resources over-utilization, whereas few detailed works excavate the root of this phenomenon. In this work, we adequately analyze the memory accesses from twenty benchmarks based on reuse distance theory and quantify their patterns. Additionally, we discuss the optimization suggestions, and implement a Bypassing Aware(BA) Cache which could intellectually bypass the thrashing-prone candidates.

BA cache is a cost efficient cache design …
