Carbon Combustion Synthesis of Oxides (CCSO) is a promising method to produce submicron- and nano- sized complex oxides. The CCSO was successfully utilized for producing several complex oxides, a complete theoretical model including the sample porosity, fl ow parameters and reaction energetics is needed to predict the combustion parameters for CCSO. In this work, we studied the ignition temperature and combustion wave axial temperature distribution, activation energy, combustion heat and thermal losses for a typical CCSO synthesis for cylindrical samples of Ni-Zn ferrites with high (>85%) porosity. We developed a two level combustion model of chemically active nano-dispersed mixture, …

Head Wave Correlations In Ambient Noise, John Thomas Gebbie, Martin Siderius Jan 2016

Head Wave Correlations In Ambient Noise, John Thomas Gebbie, Martin Siderius

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Ambient ocean noise is processed with a vertical line array to reveal coherent time-separated arrivals suggesting the presence of head wave multipath propagation. Head waves, which are critically propagating water waves created by seabed waves traveling parallel to the water-sediment interface, can propagate faster than water-only waves. Such eigenrays are much weaker than water-only eigenrays, and are often completely overshadowed by them. Surface-generated noise is different whereby it amplifies the coherence between head waves and critically propagating water-only waves, which is measured by cross-correlating critically steered beams. This phenomenon is demonstrated both experimentally and with a full wave simulation.

Building Designers' Perception And The Effect On Sustainability In Malawi, Lloyd Ndau Jan 2016

Building Designers' Perception And The Effect On Sustainability In Malawi, Lloyd Ndau

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Environmental sustainability in buildings is an important part of preserving the environment and reducing climate change. The increasing amount of physical infrastructure systems in Malawi has not been accompanied by policy-makers clearly understanding perceptions and attitudinal behaviors of building designers to promote environmental sustainability. Some building designers in Malawi might not be practicing sustainability innovations adequately, requiring more research to understand their perceptions and behaviors. The purpose of this mixed methods sequential and explanatory study was to explore how building designers' behaviors relate to the implementation of sustainability innovations in Malawi. Ajzen's theory of planned behavior explaining how attitudinal behaviors …

Study Design In an experimental study, 21 undergraduate students viewed 240 images of simulated FHR tracings twice, once with the visual aids and once without aids. Performance was examined for images containing three different types of FHR signals (early deceleration, late deceleration, and acceleration) and four different FHR signal-to-noise ratios corresponding to FHR variability types (absent, minimal, moderate, and marked) identified by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (2008). Performance was …

Age-Related Differences In Vehicle Control And Eye Movement Patterns At Intersections: Older And Middle-Aged Drivers, Yusuke Yamani, William J. Horrey, Yulan Liang, Donald L. Fisher Jan 2016

Age-Related Differences In Vehicle Control And Eye Movement Patterns At Intersections: Older And Middle-Aged Drivers, Yusuke Yamani, William J. Horrey, Yulan Liang, Donald L. Fisher

Psychology Faculty Publications

Older drivers are at increased risk of intersection crashes. Previous work found that older drivers execute less frequent glances for detecting potential threats at intersections than middle-aged drivers. Yet, earlier work has also shown that an active training program doubled the frequency of these glances among older drivers, suggesting that these effects are not necessarily due to age-related functional declines. In light of findings, the current study sought to explore the ability of older drivers to coordinate their head and eye movements while simultaneously steering the vehicle as well as their glance behavior at intersections. In a driving simulator, older …

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Osteogenesis inperfecta (OI) is associated with bone fragility. Long bone fractures are a common occurrence in individuals with OI. Although there have been significant advances in understanding the genetic defects associated with OI, the mechanisms behind bone fragility in this patient population are not yet well understood. This fragility is believed to stem in part from characteristic bone mass deficiencies. Research further suggests that the material properties of the bone are also compromised in individuals with this disorder. There is currently on quantitative method available to assess bone fracture risk in individuals with OI. This chapter examines several critical elements …

Although, many methods have been developed with different level of accuracy, in this study, two new equations were developed and optimized for estimating ET0 using Honey-Bee Mating Optimization (HBMO) algorithm. The firs eq. estimates ET0 from extraterrestrial radiation (Ra), relative humidity (RH) and mean daily temperature (Tmean), while the second uses the same parameters except that mean daily temperatures is replaced with maximum daily air temperature (Tmax). Both equations were developed using climatic data from eight weather stations in Western …

Distinction In Corrosion Resistance Of Selective Laser Melted Ti-6al-4v Alloy On Different Planes, Nianwei Dai, Laichang Zhang, Junxi Zhang, Xin Zhang, Qingzhao Ni, Yang Chen Jan 2016

Distinction In Corrosion Resistance Of Selective Laser Melted Ti-6al-4v Alloy On Different Planes, Nianwei Dai, Laichang Zhang, Junxi Zhang, Xin Zhang, Qingzhao Ni, Yang Chen

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Electrochemical measurements and microstructural analysis were performed to study the corrosion resistance of different planes of Ti-6Al-4V alloy manufactured by selective laser melting (SLM). The electrochemical results suggest that its XY-plane possesses a better corrosion resistance compared to XZ-plane in 1 M HCl solution, in spite of slight difference in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution, suggesting that the different planes exhibit more pronounced distinction in corrosion resistance in harsher solution system. The inferior corrosion resistance of XZ-plane is attributed to the presence of more α′ martensite and less β-Ti phase in microstructure for XZ-plane than for XY-plane of the SLM-produced Ti-6Al-4V …

Structural Geodesic-Tchebychev Transform: An Image Similarity Measure For Face Recognition, Ali Nadhim Razzaq, Zahir Hussain, Hind Rustum Mohammed Jan 2016

Structural Geodesic-Tchebychev Transform: An Image Similarity Measure For Face Recognition, Ali Nadhim Razzaq, Zahir Hussain, Hind Rustum Mohammed

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

This work presents a new holistic measure for face recognition. Face recognition involves three steps: Face Detection, Feature Extraction and Matching. In the face detection process to identify the face area in face images, Viola-Jones algorithm has been used. Feature extraction is based on performing double-transformation, where discrete Tchebychev transform is performed on the geodesic distance transform of the grayscale image. Structural Similarity (SSIM) is applied to the resulting image double-transform to find matching factor with other image faces in the FEI (Brazilian) database. Performance is measured using a confidence criterion based on the similarity distance between the recognized person …

Bio-Physical Closure Criteria Without Reference Sites: Realistic Targets In Modified Rivers, Melanie L. Blanchette, Mark Lund, Robyn Stoney, Digby Short, Colm Harkin Jan 2016

Bio-Physical Closure Criteria Without Reference Sites: Realistic Targets In Modified Rivers, Melanie L. Blanchette, Mark Lund, Robyn Stoney, Digby Short, Colm Harkin

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

The use of reference sites for establishing closure criteria in areas disturbed by mining activities is common practice. ‘Reference’ sites are those considered to be largely unimpacted by anthropogenic activity (retaining desirable natural characteristics), and occurring near disturbed sites. Sites are considered rehabilitated when their biophysical condition approximates that of the reference site. However, this approach often creates impossible or unrealistic targets for miners seeking to close rehabilitated lands. For example, reference sites are often limited in availability (or non-existent) due to impacts by other land uses. Further, any available reference sites might not be realistic matches for the rehabilitated …

New Cost Model For Feasibility Analysis Of Utilising Special Purpose Machine Tools, Ana Vafadar, Majid Tolouei-Rad, Kevin Haywood

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Special purpose machine tools (SPMs) have been widely used to perform drilling-related operations in high volume production including within automotive component industries. The first step in designing and manufacturing a SPM is a feasibility analysis. Since SPMs have relatively higher investment cost than other machine tools, this task must be performed before any investment on the preparation of detailed design. The present paper explores an economic feasibility analysis strategy which aims to make logical decision by assessing the strengths and limitations of an SPM in comparison with other machine tools. The mathematical product cost model for SPMs is proposed for …

Photonic Microstructures For Energy-Generating Clear Glass And Net-Zero Energy Buildings, Mikhail Vasiliev, Ramzy Alghamedi, Mohammad Alam, Kamal Alameh Jan 2016

Photonic Microstructures For Energy-Generating Clear Glass And Net-Zero Energy Buildings, Mikhail Vasiliev, Ramzy Alghamedi, Mohammad Alam, Kamal Alameh

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Transparent energy-harvesting windows are emerging as practical building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV), capable of generating electricity while simultaneously reducing heating and cooling demands. By incorporating spectrally-selective diffraction gratings as light deflecting structures of high visible transparency into lamination interlayers and using improved spectrally-selective thin-film coatings, most of the visible solar radiation can be transmitted through the glass windows with minimum attenuation. At the same time, the ultraviolet (UV) and a part of incident solar infrared (IR) radiation energy are converted and/or deflected geometrically towards the panel edge for collection by CuInSe2 solar cells. Experimental results show power conversion efficiencies in excess …

A Rapid Co-Culture Stamping Device For Studying Intercellular Communication, Amin Hassanzadeh-Barforoushi, Jonathan Shemesh, Nona Farbehi, Mohsen Asadnia, Guan H. Yeoh, Richard P. Harvey, Robert E. Nordon, Majid E. Warkiani

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Regulation of tissue development and repair depends on communication between neighbouring cells. Recent advances in cell micro-contact printing and microfluidics have facilitated the in-vitro study of homotypic and heterotypic cell-cell interaction. Nonetheless, these techniques are still complicated to perform and as a result, are seldom used by biologists. We report here development of a temporarily sealed microfluidic stamping device which utilizes a novel valve design for patterning two adherent cell lines with well-defined interlacing configurations to study cell-cell interactions. We demonstrate post-stamping cell viability of > 95%, the stamping of multiple adherent cell types, and the ability to control the seeded …

Preparation Of Biomass Derived Porous Carbon: Application For Methane Energy Storage, Yong Sun, Guangzhi Sun Jan 2016

Preparation Of Biomass Derived Porous Carbon: Application For Methane Energy Storage, Yong Sun, Guangzhi Sun

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

The porous carbon with high specific surface area of 3001 m2/g and pore volume of 1.59 cm3/g using corncob was prepared for methane storage. The low and high pressure adsorption equilibria were tested using the prepared carbon. The capacity of methane storage is evaluated using Tóth model with correction of fugacity using Benedict-Webb-Rubin equation of state in high pressure range. The theoretical maximum adsorption amount is achieved to be approximately 3.3 mmol/g. The adsorption process indicates physisorption dominates the adsorption with heterogeneous adsorption characteristic of sites on the surface of adsorbent at low pressure. The resultant carbon is ideal adsorbent …

Robots As Legal Metaphors, Ryan Calo Jan 2016

Robots As Legal Metaphors, Ryan Calo

Articles

This Article looks at the specific role robots play in the judicial imagination. The law and technology literature is replete with examples of how the metaphors and analogies that courts select for emerging technology can be outcome determinative. Privacy law scholar Professor Daniel Solove argues convincingly, for instance, that George Orwell's Big Brother metaphor has come to dominate, and in ways limit, privacy law and policy in the United States. Even at a more specific, practical level, whether a judge sees email as more like a letter or a postcard will dictate the level of Fourth Amendment protection she is …

Methods And Implementation Of Fluid-Structure Interaction Modeling Into An Industry-Accepted Design Tool, Donn R. Sederstrom

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Fluid-structure interaction (FSI) modeling is a method by which fluid and solid domains are coupled together to produce a single result that cannot be produced if each physical domain was evaluated individually. The work presented in this dissertation is a demonstration of the methods and implementation of FSI modeling into an industry-appropriate design tool. Through utilizing computationally inexpensive equipment and commercially available software, the studies presented in this work demonstrate the ability for FSI modeling to become a tool used broadly in industry.

To demonstrate this capability, the cases studied purposely include substantial complexity to demonstrate the stability techniques required …

Finite Element And Probabilistic Analysis Of Soft Tissue Structures Of The Human Lumbar Spine, Dana Joseph Coombs Jan 2016

Finite Element And Probabilistic Analysis Of Soft Tissue Structures Of The Human Lumbar Spine, Dana Joseph Coombs

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Human lumbar spine mechanics are influenced by soft tissue structures. Understanding and properly modeling these structures can help determine pathology, treatment, and implant design and performance. Finite element models of the L4-L5 level of the lumbar spine are often used, which include a representation of the intervertebral disc and spinal ligaments. Validation of these models are typically based on torque rotation data from a single subject or the models use average properties reported in literature. However, experimental testing reports variation up to 40% in ligament stiffness and even greater variability for annulus fibrosis properties. Probabilistic approaches enable consideration of the …

Statistical Modeling To Investigate Anatomy And Function Of The Knee, Lowell Matthew Smoger Jan 2016

Statistical Modeling To Investigate Anatomy And Function Of The Knee, Lowell Matthew Smoger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The natural knee is a hinge joint with significant functional requirements during activities of daily living; as a result, acute and chronic injuries can occur. Pathologies are influenced by joint anatomy and may include patellar maltracking, cartilage degeneration (e.g. osteoarthritis), or acute injuries such as meniscal or ligamentous tears. Population variability makes broadly applicable conclusions about etiology of these conditions from small-scale investigations challenging. The work presented in this dissertation is a demonstration of statistical modeling approaches to evaluate population variability in anatomy of the knee and function of its tibiofemoral (TF) and patellofemoral (PF) joints. Three-dimensional (3D) computational models …

Fluorescent Nanocomposite Of Embedded Ceria Nanoparticles In Crosslinked Pva Electrospun Nanofibers, Nader Shehata, Soha Gaballah, Effat Samir, Aya Hamed, Marwa Saad

Biology Faculty Publications

This paper introduces a new fluorescent nanocomposite of electrospun biodegradable nanofibers embedded with optical nanoparticles. In detail, this work introduces the fluorescence properties of PVA nanofibers generated by the electrospinning technique with embedded cerium oxide (ceria) nanoparticles. Under near-ultra violet excitation, the synthesized nanocomposite generates a visible fluorescent emission at 520 nm, varying its intensity peak according to the concentration of in situ embedded ceria nanoparticles. This is due to the fact that the embedded ceria nanoparticles have optical tri-valiant cerium ions, associated with formed oxygen vacancies, with a direct allowed bandgap around 3.5 eV. In addition, the impact of …
