Microbubble Assisted Polyhydroxybutyrate Production In Escherichia Coli, Kadriye Innan, Fulya Ay Sal, Asif Rahman, Ryan J. Putman, Foster A. Agblevor, Charles D. Miller

Biological Engineering Faculty Publications

Background

One of the potential limitations of large scale aerobic Escherichia coli fermentation is the need for increased dissolved oxygen for culture growth and bioproduct generation. As culture density increases the poor solubility of oxygen in water becomes one of the limiting factors for cell growth and product formation. A potential solution is to use a microbubble dispersion (MBD) generating device to reduce the diameter and increase the surface area of sparged bubbles in the fermentor. In this study, a recombinantE. coli strain was used to produce polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) under conventional and MBD aerobic fermentation conditions.

Rational Design Of Rama-Labeled Nanoparticles For A Dual-Modaility, Light Scattering Immunoassay On A Polystyrene Substrate, Nathan D. Israelsen, Donald Wooley, Cynthia Hanson, Elizabeth Vargis

Biological Engineering Faculty Publications

Background: Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a powerful light scattering technique that can be used for sensitive immunoassay development and cell labeling. A major obstacle to using SERS is the complexity of fabricating SERS probes since they require nanoscale characterization and optical uniformity. The light scattering response of SERS probes may also be modulated by the substrate used for SERS analysis. A typical SERS substrate such as quartz can be expensive. Polystyrene is a cheaper substrate option but can decrease the SERS response due to interfering Raman emission peaks and high background fluorescence. The goal of this research is to …

Toward An Engineering Discipline Of Warehouse Design, Leon Mcginnis, Timothy Sprock Jan 2016

Toward An Engineering Discipline Of Warehouse Design, Leon Mcginnis, Timothy Sprock

14th IMHRC Proceedings (Karlsruhe, Germany – 2016)

Warehouses today are complex dynamic engineered systems, incorporating automation, mechanization, equipment, fixtures, computers, networks, products and people, and they can support the flow of tens or hundreds of thousands of different items to enable fulfilling thousands or tens of thousands of orders daily. In that sense, they represent a design challenge that is not terribly different from the design of other complex dynamic engineered systems, such as a modern passenger airplane, an automobile, or a unique building. What is different is that the design of these other complex dynamic engineered systems typically follows some engineering design discipline. Here, we argue …

Monte Carlo Algorithm To Study Performance Parameters Of Shuttle Systems, Wolfgang Trummer, Dirk Jodin Jan 2016

Monte Carlo Algorithm To Study Performance Parameters Of Shuttle Systems, Wolfgang Trummer, Dirk Jodin

14th IMHRC Proceedings (Karlsruhe, Germany – 2016)

Shuttle systems provide alternative solutions in storage technology. Ma-terial flow analyses of these systems are extensive due to complex interac-tion of several shuttles and lift elements. Besides classic cycle time calcu-lation, it also requires advanced analyzing methods. At the Institute of Logistics Engineering (ITL), Graz University of Technology, an innovative, software-based approach has been developed to investigate the performance of shuttle systems. This approach is based on the Monte Carlo method. The software tool takes into account a variety of different systems and operating parameters to reflect operative behavior of shuttle systems.

Embedding Online Based Learning Strategies Into The Engineering Technology Curriculum, Vukica M. Jovanovic, Otilia Popescu, Orlando M. Ayala, Mileta Tomovic, Alok K. Verma

Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

Various blended learning strategies have been implemented at engineering technology programs to facilitate different learning styles and different time constraints given to faculty. Some of these efforts are related to the effective use of online tools such as online course management systems, ePortfolios, narrated presentations, web-based polling systems, tutorials and educational materials posted before the class and asynchronous learning methods. As technology changes, some of the online learning methods are getting more advanced which is enabling more innovative approaches and data compression. Various distance learning programs started with having access to videos of recorded lectures (on VHS tapes, or CDs) …

Machine Vision Identification Of Airport Runways With Visible And Infrared Videos, Andrew J. Moore, Matthew Schubert, Chester Dolph, Glenn Woodell Jan 2016

Machine Vision Identification Of Airport Runways With Visible And Infrared Videos, Andrew J. Moore, Matthew Schubert, Chester Dolph, Glenn Woodell

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

A widely used machine vision pipeline based on the Speeded-Up Robust Features feature detector was applied to the problem of identifying a runway from a universe of known runways, which was constructed using video records of 19 straight-in glidepath approaches to nine runways. The recordings studied included visible, short-wave infrared, and long-wave infrared videos in clear conditions, rain, and fog. Both daytime and nighttime runway approaches were used. High detection specificity (identification of the runway approached and rejection of the other runways in the universe) was observed in all conditions (greater than 90% Bayesian posterior probability). In the visible band, …

digital image processing. Using suitable computer programming techniques and transformation between two images, a new much more informative image can be found. In this paper, three important and basic medical image registration (MIR) methods, namely MIR by maximization of mutual information, MIR using cross correlation (Fourier transform approach), and MIR by minimization of similarity metric, were proposed and accordingly two comprehensive applications were performed using MIR by minimization of the similarity metric, which uses the sum of the squared differences metric as a metric and the regular step gradient descent optimizer as an optimizer. What is more, MR images of …

applications are proposed in this paper. In both antennas, the slot in the ground plane is of octagonal shape, while the patch is rectangular in one of the antennas and hexagonal in the other. Thin metallic stubs of different lengths are added to the ground plane and protrude into the slot. These stubs help to improve the impedance matching over a broader bandwidth. The antennas are very compact in size and designed on low-cost FR4 substrate. The measured impedance bandwidths (S$_{11}

realization of an experimental prototype. A Maxwell model of the system was constructed and finite elements analysis (FEA) was applied before building the experimental prototype. The effect of variations in projectile parameters (such as material and length of the projectile) on projectile velocity was studied using the model. Then the experimental prototype of the launcher system was built. A velocity measurement system was also designed and implemented to measure the muzzle velocity of the launched projectiles. A total of 9 projectiles of 3 different sizes made of 3 different materials were constructed to be launched by the system. Each projectile …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Efficient decision making in vertical handoff and network selection algorithms improves users' quality of service and helps users meet service requirements, anywhere and at any time. Hence, in this paper, a user-centric network selection algorithm is proposed, utilizing the estimated reputation of the available candidate networks based on user location and combined experienced users' utility. User utility is defined based on 1) quality of service, 2) monetary cost, and 3) energy consumption metrics. In the proposed history aware-based user location algorithm, the past experience of users for available networks is considered to estimate the future utility that a user can …

the eye regions of laptop users. To achieve this, the iris and eye corners are detected by processing the images captured by the standard internal webcam of a laptop. In addition, an artificial neural network (ANN) is used for determining the eye region. Hereby, the iris and eye corners can be detected in the determined eye region. In the study, 107 user images are captured by using a laptop's internal camera under different light intensities, environments, viewpoints, and positions. These images are used for the training of the ANN. Two different methods are used for the iris detection. In the …
