Anisotropic Electrical Response Of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Composite Materials, Mohammad Faisal Haider Jan 2016

Anisotropic Electrical Response Of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Composite Materials, Mohammad Faisal Haider

Theses and Dissertations

Composites materials are often subjected to multi-physical conditions in different applications where, in addition to mechanical loads, they also need to sustain other types of loads such as electrical currents. The multi-physical behavior of composites needs to be understood and analyzed to facilitate new multi-functional material design. An essential first step towards this goal is to understand how multi-physics properties depend on local details (e.g. micro-structure). Composite materials have heterogeneous electrical properties (carbon/epoxy) at the local level that can be different at the global level. To conduct the multi-physics study, the electrical signal is employed to the composite sample for …

Biodegradable Hybrid Tissue Engineering Scaffolds For Reconstruction Of Large Bone Defects, Danial Barati

Theses and Dissertations

Complex skeletal injuries and large bone fractures are still a significant clinical problem in US. Approximately 1.5 million Americans (veterans, their families, and civilians) every year suffer from bone loss due to traumatic skeletal injuries, infection, and resection of primary tumors that require extensive grafting to bridge the gap. The US bone graft market is over $2.2 billion a year. Due to insufficient mechanical stability, lack of vascularity, and inadequate resorption of the graft, patients with traumatic large skeletal injuries undergo multiple costly operations followed by extensive recovery steps to maintain proper bone alignment and length. Current strategies for repairing …

High Gain Pattern Reconfigurable Antenna Arrays For Portable And Body-Centric Wireless Applications, Nowrin Hasan Chamok

Theses and Dissertations

Wireless devices such as smartphones, tablet computers, smartwatches etc. have become ubiquitous. With that, the demand for high speed data has increased tremendously. Designing antennas for such applications is challenging because of limited availability of space, shadowing or blockage from the human body, and signal loss from multipath fading. Conventional broad, fixed beam low gain antennas result in poor reception, faster battery drainage, and low data rate. Compressed footprint high gain pattern reconfigurable antenna arrays can solve these problems which is the focus of this dissertation. Two innovative high gain pattern reconfiguration techniques, the switched beam parasitic array and the …

The Oxidation And Decoration Chemistry Of Platinum And Palladium Nanoparticles On Carbon Supports, Ritubarna Banerjee Jan 2016

The Oxidation And Decoration Chemistry Of Platinum And Palladium Nanoparticles On Carbon Supports, Ritubarna Banerjee

Theses and Dissertations

Ultrasmall platinum and palladium nanoparticles supported on carbon are used in a wide variety of industrial catalytic processes including hydrogenation-dehydrogenation reactions, isomerization of hydrocarbons, ammonia and formic acid decomposition, the oxidation of carbon monoxide, alcohols and ammonia, and fuel cells. This dissertation covers three aspects of the chemistry of these ultrasmall, carbon supported nanoparticles.

In the first vein of work, the oft-observed discrepancy in Pd nanoparticle size estimation between chemisorption and other methods such as STEM and XRD is explored. It is demonstrated that lower-than-expected chemisorption uptake can stem from not only residual chloride, but also from the decoration of …

Despite numerous embankment failures around the world, in-depth assessments as well as reliable, comprehensive sets of data of such failures are limited. Detailed understanding of the earthen embankment failure process and the dominant parameters affecting the failure are needed to predict and model the breach process precisely. Therefore, a series of laboratory experiments on embankment (i.e., dam and levee) overtopping as well as erodibility measurements using the Submerged Jet test are conducted. Also, to study the influence of different model parameters (e.g., turbulence model, bedload formula), one of the dam embankment experiments is simulated. The main goal of this research …

A Lithium Battery Current Estimation Technique Using An Unknown Input Observer, Daniel Cambron Jan 2016

A Lithium Battery Current Estimation Technique Using An Unknown Input Observer, Daniel Cambron

Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering

Current consumption measurements are useful in a wide variety of applications, including power monitoring and fault detection within a lithium battery management system (BMS). This measurement is typically taken using either a shunt resistor or a Hall-effect current transducer. Although both methods have achieved accurate current measurements, shunt resistors have inherent power loss and often require isolation circuitry, and Hall-effect sensors are generally expensive. This work explores a novel alternative to sensing battery current by measuring terminal voltages and cell temperatures and using an unknown input observer (UIO) to estimate the battery current. An accurate model of a LiFePO4 …

A Modular Electrical Power System Architecture For Small Spacecraft, Timothy M. Lim Jan 2016

A Modular Electrical Power System Architecture For Small Spacecraft, Timothy M. Lim

Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering

Small satellites and CubeSats have established themselves within the aerospace community because of their low cost and high return on investment. Many CubeSats are developed in a short time frame and often leverage commercial off the shelf components for quick turnaround missions. With regard to the Electrical Power System, commercially available products typically use a centralized architecture. However, a centralized architecture is not reusable, since missions that require additional solar arrays or batteries would necessitate a redesign of the power system. With the range of CubeSat sizes and mission goals, it is obvious that a one-size-fits-all solution is not appropriate. …

Analysis Of Vocal Fold Kinematics Using High Speed Video, Harikrishnan Unnikrishnan Jan 2016

Analysis Of Vocal Fold Kinematics Using High Speed Video, Harikrishnan Unnikrishnan

Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering

Vocal folds are the twin in-folding of the mucous membrane stretched horizontally across the larynx. They vibrate modulating the constant air flow initiated from the lungs. The pulsating pressure wave blowing through the glottis is thus the source for voiced speech production. Study of vocal fold dynamics during voicing are critical for the treatment of voice pathologies. Since the vocal folds move at 100 - 350 cycles per second, their visual inspection is currently done by strobosocopy which merges information from multiple cycles to present an apparent motion. High Speed Digital Laryngeal Imaging(HSDLI) with a temporal resolution of up to …

Integrating A Simple Traffic Incident Model For Rapid Evacuation Analysis, Andrew J. Collins, R. Michael Robinson, Peter Foytik, Craig Jordan, Barry C. Ezell

VMASC Publications

Road transportation networks are a segment of society's critical infrastructure particularly susceptible to service disruptions. Traffic incidents disrupt road networks by producing blockages and increasing travel times, creating significant impacts during emergency events such as evacuations. For this reason, it is extremely important to incorporate traffic incidents in evacuation planning models. Emergency managers and decision makers need tools that enable rapid assessment of multiple, varied scenarios. Many evacuation simulations require high-fidelity data input making them impractical for rapid deployment by practitioners. Since there is such variation in evacuation types and the method of disruption, evacuation models do not require the …

Per-Pixel Calibration For Rgb-Depth Natural 3d Reconstruction On Gpu, Sen Li Jan 2016

Per-Pixel Calibration For Rgb-Depth Natural 3d Reconstruction On Gpu, Sen Li

Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering

Ever since the Kinect brought low-cost depth cameras into consumer market, great interest has been invigorated into Red-Green-Blue-Depth (RGBD) sensors. Without calibration, a RGBD camera’s horizontal and vertical field of view (FoV) could help generate 3D reconstruction in camera space naturally on graphics processing unit (GPU), which however is badly deformed by the lens distortions and imperfect depth resolution (depth distortion). The camera’s calibration based on a pinhole-camera model and a high-order distortion removal model requires a lot of calculations in the fragment shader. In order to get rid of both the lens distortion and the depth distortion …

Genetic Algorithms (GAs) are widely used in multiple fields, ranging from mathematics, physics, to engineering fields, computational science, bioinformatics, manufacturing, economics, etc. The stochastic optimization problems are important in power electronics and control systems, and most designs require choosing optimum parameters to ensure maximum control effect or minimum noise impact; however, they are difficult to solve using the exhaustive searching method, especially when the search domain conveys a large area or is infinite. Instead, GAs can be applied to solve those problems. And efficient computing budget allocation technique for allocating the samples in GAs is necessary because the real-life problems …

Mathematical Model For Current Transformer Based On Jiles-Atherton Theory And Saturation Detection Method, Xiang Li Jan 2016

Mathematical Model For Current Transformer Based On Jiles-Atherton Theory And Saturation Detection Method, Xiang Li

Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering

Current transformer saturation will cause the secondary current distortion. When saturation occurs, the secondary current will not be linearly proportional to the primary current, which may lead to maloperation of protection devices. This thesis researches and tests two detecting methods: Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and Wavelet Transform based methods. Comparing these two methods, FFT has a better performance in steady state saturation, and Wavelet Transform can determine singularity to provide the moment of distortion.

The Jiles-Atherton (J-A) theory of ferromagnetic hysteresis is one approach used in electromagnetics transient modeling. With decades of development, the J-A model has evolved into different …

Nonreciprocal Magnetostatic Surface Wave In Thin Ferromagnetic Film, Kumar Vishal

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Interest in the nonreciprocal property of waves inside the magnetic material starts with its current advancement in the field of passive devices. In current technology passive devices without magnetic cores are realized on a silicon chip, usually these devices are lossy and bigger in size. Passive devices constructed with magnetic core material such as isolators, circulators, phase shifters, and gyrators; gives us the chance to minimize such losses. Nonreciprocity in magnetic material is due to the anisotropic property of permeability, it is complex in nature and represent in 3×3 matrix form. We can control the wave flow inside the nonreciprocal …

A Theoretical Simulation Of The Settling Of Proppants In A Hydraulic Fracturing Process, Nisreen Alseamr Jan 2016

Retail store's layout affects a shopper's visual experience and correspondingly the time spent in the store, navigation through the aisles, and allocation of attention and money across departments and categories. We contend that alternate rack layouts allow for more of a rack's facing to appear in the shopper's visual field. In this work we focus on the following two questions: (i) what impact does a given rack layout have on how much of a rack display is exposed to a shopper? (ii) what rack layouts maximize exposure to a shopper? To address the first question, we introduce a set of …

A Fractal-Based Mathematical Model For Cancellous Bone Growth Considering The Hierarchical Nature Of Bone, Stephanie Marie Suhr Jan 2016

A Fractal-Based Mathematical Model For Cancellous Bone Growth Considering The Hierarchical Nature Of Bone, Stephanie Marie Suhr

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The hierarchical structure of bone alone is not comprehensive enough to provide morphological explanation of how the size and arrangement of the trabeculae within cancellous bone affect load distribution, particularly concerning deterioration of bone in elderly patients. The collagen network and hydroxyapatite play a large role in defining the shape of trabeculae in cancellous bone despite that the arrangement and size is seemingly random. The growth of plates and rods in cancellous bone is mainly due to loading and stress lines within the bone, but mathematical predictive models can be developed using fractal analysis to show how bone may grow …

Elucidating The Role Of Microstructure, Texture, And Microtexture On The Dwell Fatigue Response Of Ti-6al-4v, Alec Mitchell Blankenship Jan 2016

Elucidating The Role Of Microstructure, Texture, And Microtexture On The Dwell Fatigue Response Of Ti-6al-4v, Alec Mitchell Blankenship

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Ambient temperature dwell sensitivity is known to be deleterious to the fatigue response of near-alpha titanium alloys. Dwell fatigue refers to the presence of a sustained hold at peak stress as opposed to the continuous variation of normal cyclic fatigue loading. This reduction in failure life-times from dwell loading is attributed to early crack nucleation and faster crack propagation. The degradation is the result of plastic anisotropy on the microstructural scale along with tendency of titanium alloys to creep at low temperatures at stresses well below the 0.2% offset yield strength. Despite being the most widely used titanium alloy, Ti-6Al-4V …
