Development Of A Modularized Software Architecture To Enhance Ssa With Cots Telescopes, Julian P. Mccafferty Mar 2016

Development Of A Modularized Software Architecture To Enhance Ssa With Cots Telescopes, Julian P. Mccafferty

Theses and Dissertations

As the catalog of Earth orbiting objects continues to grow exponentially, so too does the necessity for Space Situational Awareness (SSA). Previous work at AFIT has explored augmenting the Space Surveillance Network (SSN) by demonstrating detection and tracking of orbiting objects using Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) telescopes and Air Force generated Two-Line Element Sets (TLE). This research explores the process of developing and reengineering code into a modularized, hierarchical component architecture designed for the end user while enabling developers to continue to modify the software for future applications. Three graphical user interfaces (GUI) are compiled into standalone executable programs using MATLAB for …

Exposing Inter-Virtual Machine Networking Traffic To External Applications, Charles E. Byrd

Theses and Dissertations

Virtualization is a powerful and fast growing technology that is widely accepted throughout the computing industry. The Department of Defense has moved its focus to virtualization and looks to take advantage of virtualized hardware, software, and networks. Virtual environments provide many benefits but create both administrative and security challenges. The challenge of monitoring virtual networks is having visibility of inter-virtual machine (VM) traffic that is passed within a single virtual host. This thesis attempts to gain visibility and evaluate performance of inter-VM traffic in a virtual environment. Separate virtual networks are produced using VMWare ESXi and Citrix XenServer platforms. The …

Toward Automated Aerial Refueling: Relative Navigation With Structure From Motion, Kevin W. Colson Mar 2016

Toward Automated Aerial Refueling: Relative Navigation With Structure From Motion, Kevin W. Colson

Theses and Dissertations

The USAF's use of UAS has expanded from reconnaissance to hunter/killer missions. As the UAS mission further expands into aerial combat, better performance and larger payloads will have a negative correlation with range and loiter times. Additionally, the Air Force Future Operating Concept calls for \formations of uninhabited refueling aircraft...[that] enable refueling operations partway inside threat areas." However, a lack of accurate relative positioning information prevents the ability to safely maintain close formation flight and contact between a tanker and a UAS. The inclusion of cutting edge vision systems on present refueling platforms may provide the information necessary to support …

Utilization Of A Geodesic Sphere And Quadcopter As Two-Way Field Probe For Electro-Magnetic Field Measurements In An Indoor Radar Cross Section Range, Nathan Lett

Theses and Dissertations

Radar Cross Section (RCS) measurements rely heavily on multiple assumptions. Uncertainty in the final measurement is determined based on these assumptions. One source in particular is the non-homogeneous nature of the transmission path between radar test equipment and a target under test. The following research extends prior research. This thesis intends to provide a unique two-way field probe solution for measuring Electro-magnetic (EM) fluctuations in a test volume. In this thesis, the design, development, and demonstration of a geodesic sphere encased quadcopter two-way probe is explained. The Parrot® Bebop Drone quadcopter was used with a 2v frequency divided geodesic sphere …

Real-Time Implementation Of Vision-Aided Monocular Navigation For Small Fixed-Wing Unmanned Aerial Systems, Timothy I. Machin

Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this project was to develop and implement algorithms to demonstrate real-time positioning of a UAV using a monocular camera combined with previously collected orthorectified imagery. Unlike previous tests, this project did not utilize a full inertial navigation system (INS) for attitude, but instead had to rely on the attitude obtained by inexpensive commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) autopilots. The system consisted of primarily COTS components and open-source software, and was own over Camp Atterbury, IN for a sequence of flight tests in Fall 2015. The system obtained valid solutions over much of the flight path, identifying features in the …

Multihop Rendezvous Algorithm For Frequency Hopping Cognitive Radio Networks, John A. Pavlik Mar 2016

Multihop Rendezvous Algorithm For Frequency Hopping Cognitive Radio Networks, John A. Pavlik

Theses and Dissertations

Cognitive radios allow the possibility of increasing utilization of the wireless spectrum, but because of their dynamic access nature require new techniques for establishing and joining networks, these are known as rendezvous. Existing rendezvous algorithms assume that rendezvous can be completed in a single round or hop of time. However, cognitive radio networks utilizing frequency hopping that is too fast for synchronization packets to be exchanged in a single hop require a rendezvous algorithm that supports multiple hop rendezvous. We propose the Multiple Hop (MH) rendezvous algorithm based on a pre-shared sequence of random numbers, bounded timing differences, and similar …

Modulation Of Whole Cell Currents In Human Neuroblastoma Cells Via The Hormone Aldosterone: An In Vitro Study, Harish Kumar Chittam Mar 2016

Modulation Of Whole Cell Currents In Human Neuroblastoma Cells Via The Hormone Aldosterone: An In Vitro Study, Harish Kumar Chittam

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Ion channels play a critical role in maintaining homeostasis by moving various ions in and out of cells. The Na+-K+-2Cl- or NKCC1 ion channel is involved in the regulation of Na+, K+, and Cl- across cell membranes, and plays a key role in many forms of cellular physiology. In the cochlea, NKCC1 is involved in endolymph production and maintenance of the endocochlear potential. Our hypothesis is that blocking NKCC1 channels should directly impact auditory sensitivity causing hearing loss. Our lab has also shown that the hormone aldosterone (ALD) can upregulate …

Conversion Of Landfill Gas To Liquid Hydrocarbon Fuels: Design And Feasibility Study, Ryan Alexander Kent Mar 2016

Conversion Of Landfill Gas To Liquid Hydrocarbon Fuels: Design And Feasibility Study, Ryan Alexander Kent

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This paper will discuss the conversion of gas produced from biomass into liquid fuel through the combination of naturally occurring processes, which occur in landfills and anaerobic digesters, and a gas-to-liquids (GTL) facility. Landfills and anaerobic digesters produce gases (LFG) that can be converted into syngas via a Tri-reforming process and then synthesized into man-made hydrocarbon mixtures using Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. Further processing allows for the separation into liquid hydrocarbon fuels such as diesel and gasoline, as well as other middle distillate fuels. Conversion of landfill gas into liquid fuels increases their energy density, ease of storage, and open market potential …

Hydrogen Effects On X80 Steel Mechanical Properties Measured By Tensile And Impact Testing, Xuan Li

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The effect of hydrogen charging current density and tensile strain rate on the mechanical properties of X80 pipeline steel were investigated by slow strain rate test (SSRT), Charpy impact test, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in this thesis. The results show that both the ultimate tensile strength and elongation to failure of X80 steel were deteriorated significantly after charging with hydrogen. With a strain rate of 5 x 10-5 s-1, the relative tensile strength and plasticity loss of X80 steel had no significant change within the range of assumed hydrogen partial pressures at room temperature. At room …

Information Representation And Computation Of Spike Trains In Reservoir Computing Systems With Spiking Neurons And Analog Neurons, Amin Almassian Mar 2016

Information Representation And Computation Of Spike Trains In Reservoir Computing Systems With Spiking Neurons And Analog Neurons, Amin Almassian

Dissertations and Theses

Real-time processing of space-and-time-variant signals is imperative for perception and real-world problem-solving. In the brain, spatio-temporal stimuli are converted into spike trains by sensory neurons and projected to the neurons in subcortical and cortical layers for further processing.

Reservoir Computing (RC) is a neural computation paradigm that is inspired by cortical Neural Networks (NN). It is promising for real-time, on-line computation of spatio-temporal signals. An RC system incorporates a Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) called reservoir, the state of which is changed by a trajectory of perturbations caused by a spatio-temporal input sequence. A trained, non- recurrent, linear readout-layer interprets the …

The design of intramedullary (IM) devices is on the rise, but data describing the IM canal parameters is lacking. The aim of this study is to quantify morphometry of the clavicle and its IM canal, and to evaluate the effect of gender and anatomical side. This study used 3-dimensional (3D) image-based models with novel and automated methods of standardization, normalization and bone cross-section evaluation. The data obtained in this thesis presents …

A Trans-Dimensional View Of Drug Resistance Evolution In Multiple Myeloma Patients, Timothy Jacobson Mar 2016

A Trans-Dimensional View Of Drug Resistance Evolution In Multiple Myeloma Patients, Timothy Jacobson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Multiple Myeloma (MM) is a treatable, yet incurable, malignancy of bone marrowplasma cells. This cancer affects many patients and many succumb to relapse of tumor burden despite a large number of available chemotherapeutic agents developed for therapy. This is because MM tumors are heterogeneous and receive protection from therapeutic agents by the microenvironment and other mechanisms including homologous MM-MM aggregation. Therefore, therapy failure and frequent patient relapse is due to the evolution of drug resistance, not a lack of available drugs. To analyze and understand this problem, the evolution of drug resistance has been explored and presented herein. We seek …

Water Metering In Rural, Piped, Community-Managed Water Systems In The Developing World, Simona Platukyte Mar 2016

Water Metering In Rural, Piped, Community-Managed Water Systems In The Developing World, Simona Platukyte

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In the early 1990s, the United Nations (UN) recognized water as a finite resource to the entire ecosystem with an economic value that should be developed and managed based on the participatory approach using the Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) strategy. Many studies on water management practices have thus emerged in the developing world. Of particular interest to this work is the management of water through metering, price-setting, and rule enforcement in the rural setting in piped, community-owned water systems. There is very little published information regarding metering, enforcement experiments, and experiences in these systems. This is because metering and …

Experimental Studies Of Simultaneous Nitrification Denitrification And Phosphorus Removal At Falkenburg Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant, Ann Elizabeth Sager

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The discharge of point- and non-point source pollutants into surface waters resulting from industrial and/or municipal activities is a major focus of environmental regulation in the United States. As a result, the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit program was established in 1972 in an effort to regulate discharges from industrial or municipal sources, including wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). To further protect Florida water quality, in 1978, State legislation enacted the Grizzle-Figg Act for Tampa Bay, which requires advanced wastewater treatment for any discharge into sensitive water bodies. A common use of wastewater effluent in the Tampa Bay area …

The Welfare Effects Of Nationalization In A Mixed Duopoly Public Transport Market, Feifei Qin, Xiaoning Zhang, Eoin Plant Mar 2016

The Welfare Effects Of Nationalization In A Mixed Duopoly Public Transport Market, Feifei Qin, Xiaoning Zhang, Eoin Plant

Articles

Recently, many cities have launched new rail transit lines. Once these new rail transit lines start commercial operation, they will play important roles as competitors to conventional bus services. In this paper, the effects of nationalization on equilibria have been studied in a mixed duopoly public transport market, in which one publicly-owned rail transit operator competes with one private bus operator. Two numerical case studies show the nationalization of a rail transit company is always socially desirable both in Bertrand pricing game in the short run and in Nash non-cooperative game in the long run.

Process-based hydrological models have a long history dating back to the 1960s. Criticized by some as over-parameterized, overly complex, and difficult to use, a more nuanced view is that these tools are necessary in many situations and, in a certain class of problems, they are the most appropriate type of hydrological model. This is especially the case in situations where knowledge of flow paths or distributed state variables and/or preservation of physical constraints is important. Examples of this include: spatiotemporal variability of soil moisture, groundwater flow and runoff generation, sediment and contaminant transport, or when feedbacks among various Earth’s system …

Cement Heat Of Hydration And Thermal Control, Ahmadreza Sedaghat Mar 2016

Cement Heat Of Hydration And Thermal Control, Ahmadreza Sedaghat

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Heat of hydration is a property of Portland cement and a direct result of the chemical reaction between cement and water. The amount of heat released is dependent upon the cement mineralogical composition, curing temperature, water to cement ratio, and cement fineness. High temperature resulting from heat of hydration (thereon referred to as HOH) of cement can affect the hydration process, and consequently the kinetics of development of the mechanical properties of concrete. One of the main reasons triggering the interest in HOH of cement is its implication in thermal cracking of concrete. The high temperature gradient between the inner …

Behavior Of Prestressed Concrete Beams With Cfrp Strands, Yasir Matloob Saeed Mar 2016

Behavior Of Prestressed Concrete Beams With Cfrp Strands, Yasir Matloob Saeed

Dissertations and Theses

The high cost of repairing reinforced or prestressed concrete structures due to steel corrosion has driven engineers to look for solutions. Much research has been conducted over the last two decades to evaluate the use of Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRPs) in concrete structures. Structural engineering researchers have been testing FRP to determine their usability instead of steel for strengthening existing reinforced concrete structures, reinforcing new concrete members, and for prestressed concrete applications. The high strength-to-weight ratio of FRP materials, especially Carbon FRP (CFRP), and their non-corrosive nature are probably the most attractive features of FRPs.

In this study, an experimental …

Consistency Analysis For Judgment Quantification In Hierarchical Decision Model, Mustafa Sulaiman Abbas Mar 2016

Consistency Analysis For Judgment Quantification In Hierarchical Decision Model, Mustafa Sulaiman Abbas

Dissertations and Theses

The objective of this research is to establish consistency thresholds linked to alpha (α) levels for HDM’s (Hierarchical Decision Model) judgment quantification method. Measuring consistency in order to control it is a crucial and inseparable part of any AHP/HDM experiment. The researchers on the subject recommend establishing thresholds that are statistically based on hypothesis testing, and are linked to the number of decision variables and (α) level. Such thresholds provide the means with which to evaluate the soundness and validity of an AHP/HDM decision. The linkage of thresholds to (α) levels allows the decision makers to set an appropriate inconsistency …

Hydrologic Modeling In Dynamic Catchments: A Data Assimilation Approach, Sahani Darshika Pathiraja, Ashish Sharma, Lucy Marshall, Hamid Moradkhani Mar 2016

Hydrologic Modeling In Dynamic Catchments: A Data Assimilation Approach, Sahani Darshika Pathiraja, Ashish Sharma, Lucy Marshall, Hamid Moradkhani

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The transferability of conceptual hydrologic models in time is often limited by both their structural deficiencies and adopted parameterizations. Adopting a stationary set of model parameters ignores biases introduced by the data used to derive them, as well as any future changes to catchment conditions. Although time invariance of model parameters is one of the hallmarks of a high quality hydrologic model, very few (if any) models can achieve this due to their inherent limitations. It is therefore proposed to consider parameters as potentially time varying quantities, which can evolve according to signals in hydrologic observations. In this paper, we …

The Use Of Microfluidics And Dielectrophoresis For Separation, Concentration, And Identification Of Bacteria, Cynthia Hanson, Michael Sieverts, Karen Tew, Annelise Dykes, Michaela Salisbury, Elizabeth Vargis Mar 2016

The Use Of Microfluidics And Dielectrophoresis For Separation, Concentration, And Identification Of Bacteria, Cynthia Hanson, Michael Sieverts, Karen Tew, Annelise Dykes, Michaela Salisbury, Elizabeth Vargis

Biological Engineering Faculty Publications

Traditional bacterial identification methods take one to two days to complete, relying on large bacteria colonies for visual identification. In order to decrease this analysis time in a cost-effective manner, a method to sort and concentrate bacteria based on the bacteria's characteristics itself is needed. One example of such a method is dielectrophoresis, which has been used by researchers to separate bacteria from sample debris and sort bacteria according to species. This work presents variations in which dielectrophoresis can be performed and their associated drawbacks and benefits specifically to bacterial identification. In addition, a potential microfluidic design will be discussed.

Integrating Nanosphere Lithography In Device Fabrication, Tod V. Laurvick, Ronald A. Coutu Jr., Robert A. Lake Mar 2016

Integrating Nanosphere Lithography In Device Fabrication, Tod V. Laurvick, Ronald A. Coutu Jr., Robert A. Lake

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

This paper discusses the integration of nanosphere lithography (NSL) with other fabrication techniques, allowing for nano-scaled features to be realized within larger microelectromechanical system (MEMS) based devices. Nanosphere self-patterning methods have been researched for over three decades, but typically not for use as a lithography process. Only recently has progress been made towards integrating many of the best practices from these publications and determining a process that yields large areas of coverage, with repeatability and enabled a process for precise placement of nanospheres relative to other features. Discussed are two of the more common self-patterning methods used in NSL (i.e. …

A Continuous Formulation For Logical Decisions In Differential Algebraic Systems Using Mathematical Programs Of Complementarity Constraints, Kody Powell, Ammon N. Eaton, John Hedengren, Thomas F. Edgar Mar 2016

A Continuous Formulation For Logical Decisions In Differential Algebraic Systems Using Mathematical Programs Of Complementarity Constraints, Kody Powell, Ammon N. Eaton, John Hedengren, Thomas F. Edgar

Faculty Publications

This work presents a methodology to represent logical decisions in differential algebraic equation simulation and constrained optimization problems using a set of continuous algebraic equations. The formulations may be used when state variables trigger a change in process dynamics, and introduces a pseudo-binary decision variable, which is continuous, but should only have valid solutions at values of either zero or one within a finite time horizon. This formulation enables dynamic optimization problems with logical disjunctions to be solved by simultaneous solution methods without using methods such as mixed integer programming. Several case studies are given to illustrate the value of …
