Ultimately this research provides a feasibility analysis for utilization …

Optimizing Forecasting Methods For Ustranscom Railcar Demands, James M. Park Mar 2016

Optimizing Forecasting Methods For Ustranscom Railcar Demands, James M. Park

Theses and Dissertations

The United States military heavily relies on rail freight operations to meet many of its logistical needs during both peacetime and wartime efforts. As the head organization responsible for managing and overseeing all modes of military transportation, United States Transportation Command depends on timely accurate railcar demand forecasts to drive critical decisions on distribution and placement of railcar assets. However, the intermittent nature of railcar demands based on location and commodity make it a challenging task for forecasters. Furthermore, these “lumpy” demands often come without any obvious trends or seasonality. This study explores the utility of both traditional forecasting methods …

Characterizing Emissions From Open Burning Of Military Food Waste And Packaging From Forward Operating Bases, Thomas Dominguez Mar 2016

Characterizing Emissions From Open Burning Of Military Food Waste And Packaging From Forward Operating Bases, Thomas Dominguez

Theses and Dissertations

Emissions were characterized and compared from the open burning of four compositions of Meals, Ready-To-Eat (MRE) and four types of MRE fiberboard packaging in response to inhalation concerns at military forward operating bases. Measurements of particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10) showed that MREs account for 70-90 percent of PM emissions when burned in unison with the current fiberboard container and liner and that PM2.5 constitutes a vast majority of the particulates emitted. Targeted replacement of MRE constituents may be more effective in reducing volatile organic compound (VOC) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emissions than the variation of fiberboard packaging designs, while …

Increased Capacity Utilizing Aggregation And Consolidation Of Contingency Cargo, Cassidy L. Wilson Mar 2016

Increased Capacity Utilizing Aggregation And Consolidation Of Contingency Cargo, Cassidy L. Wilson

Theses and Dissertations

Maximizing use of limited airlift assets is a common problem during large contingency operations. Requirements often exceed airlift capacity and fiscal constraints driving the need to aggregate conveyance loads both within and across business lines (Unit Line Number (ULN), Special Assignment Airlift Mission (SAAM), and sustainment). Current methods of consolidation are completed by planners at the 618th Air Operations Center. This process is completed by piecing email correspondence and making individual localized decisions which are not always consistent with big picture efficiency. United States Transportation Command requested a study to create standard business rules or a methodology that can benefit …

Sortie Generation Simulation Of A Fighter Squadron, Abdurrahman Sevimli Mar 2016

Sortie Generation Simulation Of A Fighter Squadron, Abdurrahman Sevimli

Theses and Dissertations

The Turkish Air Force utilizes several fighter squadrons to enhance its military capabilities. One of the most critical challenges for these squadrons is generating sorties to meet the currency and demand during both peacetime and wartime. This sortie generation process directly affects the success of both training and operations. In this study, this process is assessed using a discrete event simulation. Air Force decision makers require a simulation tool to conduct “what-if” analysis on how potential changes in the environment affect an F-16 fighter squadron’s sortie generation process. Creating a usable simulation provides decision makers with a flexible tool to …

Methods To Address Extreme Class Imbalance In Machine Learning Based Network Intrusion Detection Systems, Russell W. Walter Mar 2016

Methods To Address Extreme Class Imbalance In Machine Learning Based Network Intrusion Detection Systems, Russell W. Walter

Theses and Dissertations

Despite the considerable academic interest in using machine learning methods to detect cyber attacks and malicious network traffic, there is little evidence that modern organizations employ such systems. Due to the targeted nature of attacks and cybercriminals’ constantly changing behavior, valid observations of attack traffic suitable for training a classifier are extremely rare. Rare positive cases combined with the fact that the overwhelming majority of network traffic is benign create an extreme class imbalance problem. Using publically available datasets, this research examines the class imbalance problem by using small samples of the attack observations to create multiple training sets that …

Theses and Dissertations

The United States Air Force (USAF) owns a total of 30.9 million linear feet (LF) of storm sewer pipes valued at approximately $2.3B in its vast portfolio of built infrastructure. Current inventory records reveal that 78% of the inventory (24.1 million LF) is over 50 years old and will soon exceed its estimated service life. Additionally, the USAF depends on contract support while its business processes undervalue in-service evaluations from long-term funding plans. Ultimately, this disconnect negatively impacts infrastructure performance and overall strategic success, and the USAF risks making uninformed decisions in a fiscally constrained environment.

This research presents a …

Influence Of Coolant Flow Rate Parameters In Scaling Gas Turbine Cooling Effectiveness, Connor J. Wiese Mar 2016

Influence Of Coolant Flow Rate Parameters In Scaling Gas Turbine Cooling Effectiveness, Connor J. Wiese

Theses and Dissertations

Film cooling scheme development for use in gas turbine engines often entails the characterization of adiabatic wall temperature distributions in order to determine the driving temperatures for the convective heat transfer processes in the engine. For convenience, adiabatic effectiveness experiments are often performed near room temperature and presumed to scale the engine condition. In order to perform these experiments, researchers elect to match the freestream Reynolds number to that of the engine. When scaling to engine temperatures, however, coolant and freestream fluid properties both change nonlinearly. Therefore the ratio of these properties does not remain constant as the temperature changes. …

Minimum-Fuel Trajectory Design In Multiple Dynamical Environments Utilizing Direct Transcription Methods And Particle Swarm Optimization, Alfredo G. Zurita Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Particle swarm optimization is used to generate an initial guess for designing fuel-optimal trajectories in multiple dynamical environments. Trajectories designed in the vicinity of Earth use continuous or finite low-thrust burning and transfer from an inclined or equatorial circular low-Earth-orbit to a geostationary orbit. In addition, a trajectory from near-Earth to a periodic orbit about the cislunar Lagrange point with minimized impulsive burn costs is designed within a multi-body dynamical environment. Direct transcription is used in conjunction with a nonlinear optimizer to find locally-optimal trajectories given the initial guess. The near-Earth transfers are propagated at low-level thrust where neither the …

Neutron Versus Gamma Radiation Effects On Ytterbium-Doped Optical Fibers, Olivia M. Borman Mar 2016

Neutron Versus Gamma Radiation Effects On Ytterbium-Doped Optical Fibers, Olivia M. Borman

Theses and Dissertations

Multimode ytterbium-doped optical fibers (YDFs) are increasingly utilized in military applications involving fiber lasers and amplifiers. YDFs were irradiated with three different radiation sources (neutron, gamma, and mixed gamma/neutron) in order to determine the independent effects that gamma and neutron radiation have on the fibers. The transmission spectra of the fibers were measured during each irradiation and the spectral shapes and attenuation were compared at similar doses. Comparisons of the spectra showed that gamma radiation results in increased attenuation over the 550-975 nm wavelengths. Fast neutrons were found to contribute to increased attenuation near 500 nm. Neutron radiation also caused …

Pointing Analysis And Design Drivers For Low Earth Orbit Satellite Quantum Key Distribution, Jeremiah A. Specht

Theses and Dissertations

The world relies on encryption to perform critical and sensitive tasks every day. If quantum computing matures, the capability to decode keys and decrypt messages becomes possible. Quantum key distribution (QKD) is a method of distributing secure cryptographic keys which relies on the laws of quantum mechanics. Current implementations of QKD use fiber-based channels which limit the number of users and the distance between users. Satellite-based QKD using free-space channels is proposed as a feasible secure global communication solution. Since a free-space link does not use a waveguide, pointing a transmitter to receiver is required to ensure signal arrival. In …

Design And Flight Test Of A Weapons-Cavity Acoustics And Separation Test Bed, Zachary Probst Mar 2016

Design And Flight Test Of A Weapons-Cavity Acoustics And Separation Test Bed, Zachary Probst

Theses and Dissertations

Two very important, and often detrimental, phenomena can occur when an open weapons bay, or more generally-a cavity, is exposed to high-velocity flow. First, a shear layer develops over the cavity, leading to large regions of difficult-to-predict flow. Second, dynamic pressure oscillations are generated within the cavity itself. These two issues can combine to have multiple harmful effects on weapons carriage and employment. This provided motivation for flight tests which quantify forces and moments on a store, mounted at various positions in the cavity, for a variety of flight conditions. Specifically, a low-cost, easily reconfigurable test bed for weapons-cavity research …

Mission Dependency Index Of Air Force Built Infrastructure: Knowledge Discovery With Machine Learning, Clark W. Smith Mar 2016

Mission Dependency Index Of Air Force Built Infrastructure: Knowledge Discovery With Machine Learning, Clark W. Smith

Theses and Dissertations

Mission Dependency Index (MDI) is a metric developed to capture the relative criticality of infrastructure assets with respect to organizational missions. The USAF adapted the MDI metric from the United States Navy’s MDI methodology. Unlike the Navy’s MDI data collection process, the USAF adaptation of the MDI metric employs generic facility category codes (CATCODEs) to assign MDI values. This practice introduces uncertainty into the MDI assignment process with respect to specific missions and specific infrastructure assets. The uncertainty associated with USAF MDI values necessitated the MDI adjudication process. The MDI adjudication process provides a mechanism for installation civil engineer personnel …
