Model For Coupled Large Strain Consolidation And Solute Transport In Layered Soils, Hefu Pu, Patrick J. Fox

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A numerical model, called CST3 (Consolidation and Solute Transport 3), is presented for coupled one-dimensional large strain consolidation and solute transport in layered soils. The consolidation algorithm accounts for vertical strain, soil self-weight, general constitutive relationships, relative velocity of fluid and solid phases, changing compressibility and hydraulic conductivity during consolidation, unload/reload, time-dependent loading and boundary conditions, external hydraulic gradient, variable preconsolidation stress profiles, and multiple soil layers with different material properties. The solute transport algorithm accounts for advection, diffusion, mechanical dispersion, linear and nonlinear sorption, equilibrium and nonequilibrium sorption, porosity-dependent effective diffusion coefficient, and first-order decay reactions. CST3 is based …

Large-Area Object Search And Recovery Using Sector-Based Aerial Acousto-Optic Scanning And Reflection Sensing, Monish Ranjan Chatterjee, Salaheddeen G. Bugoffa

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

A sector-based angular scanning system intended to identify and spatially locate relatively small objects scattered over a large terrain is described in this paper. The system is modeled as a planar surface on the horizontal (XY) plane, with an acousto-optic Bragg cell on board an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) operating in the XZ plane.

The Bragg cell is excited by a chirped RF signal with a designed frequency ramp. As the scanning beam reflects off the horizontal surface, a detector placed strategically at a suitable altitude (in the analysis shown to be on board the UAV itself) picks up the …

Incorporation Of Gnss Multipath To Improve Autonomous Rendezvous, Docking And Proximity Operations In Space, Benjamin W. Ashman

Open Access Dissertations

Automated rendezvous and docking (AR&D;) operations are important for many future space missions, such as the resupply of space stations, repair and refueling of large satellites, and active removal of orbital debris. These operations depend critically on accurate, real-time knowledge of the relative position and velocity between two space vehicles. Unfortunately, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) capabilities remain severely limited in close proximity to large space structures due to significant multipath effects and signal blockage. Although GNSS is used for the initial stages of approach, other instruments such as laser, radar and vision-based systems, are required to augment GNSS during …

Membrane Channel Gene Expression In Human Costal And Articular Chondrocytes, A. Asmar, R. Barrett-Jolley, A. Werner, R. Kelly Jr., M. Stacey Apr 2016

Membrane Channel Gene Expression In Human Costal And Articular Chondrocytes, A. Asmar, R. Barrett-Jolley, A. Werner, R. Kelly Jr., M. Stacey

Bioelectrics Publications

Chondrocytes are the uniquely resident cells found in all types of cartilage and key to their function is the ability to respond to mechanical loads with changes of metabolic activity. This mechanotransduction property is, in part, mediated through the activity of a range of expressed transmembrane channels; ion channels, gap junction proteins, and porins. Appropriate expression of ion channels has been shown essential for production of extracellular matrix and differential expression of transmembrane channels is correlated to musculoskeletal diseases such as osteoarthritis and Albers-Sch€onberg. In this study we analyzed the consistency of gene expression between channelomes of chondrocytes from human …

An Efficient Approach To Reliability-Based Topology Optimization For Continua Under Material Uncertainty, Mehdi Jalalpour, Mazdak Tootkaboni Apr 2016

An Efficient Approach To Reliability-Based Topology Optimization For Continua Under Material Uncertainty, Mehdi Jalalpour, Mazdak Tootkaboni

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

This contribution presents a computationally efficient method for reliability-based topology optimization for continuum domains under material properties uncertainty. Material Young’s modulus is assumed to be lognormally distributed and correlated within the domain. The computational efficiency is achieved through estimating the response statistics with stochastic perturbation of second order, using these statistics to fit an appropriate distribution that follows the empirical distribution of the response, and employing an efficient gradient-based optimizer. Two widely-studied topology optimization problems are examined and the changes in the optimized topology is discussed for various levels of target reliability and correlation strength. Accuracy of the proposed algorithm …

Internal Fault Location In Transformer Windings, Samir Yehya Abed-Alkareem Alzekri Apr 2016

Internal Fault Location In Transformer Windings, Samir Yehya Abed-Alkareem Alzekri

Masters Theses

Power transformers are one of the most important components in electrical power systems. During their lifetime they are exposed to various electrical faults which are originated from transient overvoltages, electromagnetic forces due to over-currents, ageing, etc.

Internal winding faults are among the most common causes of transformer failure. Once a fault occurs, a fast an efficient method for its detection and location is required to avoid further delays in the network operation. This paper introduces a simple method for the location of internal winding faults. This method is based on time domain terminal measurements of wave propagation along the winding. …

A Parameterized Implementation Of A Hybrid Fuzzy Boolean Finite State Machine Using An Fpga, Sean T. Fuller

Masters Theses

A fuzzy system based on the extended Hybrid Fuzzy Boolean Finite State Machine (HFBFSM) model is designed and implemented in a Xilinx Zynq® all programmable System on Chip (SoC). The system allows for a single dominant crisp state and multiple non-dominant states to be activated simultaneously. A method is proposed to calculate the degree of membership of non-dominant states, β, by the distance of defuzzified fuzzy inputs to state transition trigger mechanisms.

The HFB-FSM is was realized by the author using custom logic written in VHDL (Very High Speed Integrated Circuit (VHSIC) Hardware Description Language) in the Programmable Logic (PL) …

Artificial Neural Networks For Wireless Structural Control, Ghazi Binarandi Apr 2016

Artificial Neural Networks For Wireless Structural Control, Ghazi Binarandi

Open Access Theses

We live in an age when people desire taller buildings and longer bridges. These increasing demands of more flexible structures challenge civil engineers to ensure structural safety in the state where they are more prone to extreme dynamic loading, such as earthquakes. Extensive wiring required in traditional structural control applications may be expensive and inconvenient, especially for large scale structures. To improve the scalability, wireless sensors offer a promising alternative. However, the presence of time delay and data loss in a wireless sensor network can potentially reduce the performance of the control system. Here an artificial neural network is proposed …

The Casualty Transportation Of Ebola Outbreak In Liberia: A Simulation Study, Hyejin Cho

Open Access Theses

In this paper, we have solved the unique problem of casualty transportation problem under Ebola by developing dynamic policies for vehicle routing in order to provide practical decision support. The objective of the proposed model is to minimize the total transmission risk. We describe the problem with real- constraints and parameters based on the empirical data of the 2014 Ebola outbreak in Liberia. The casualty transportation problem is a variant of Dynamic Pick-up and Delivery Problems (DPDP), in which a vehicle is dispatched to demand location in real time and it then transports the demands to the aimed area (destination). …

Characterization Of A Continuous-Flow Reactor For Solar Uv Water Disinfection, Margaret M. Busse Apr 2016

Characterization Of A Continuous-Flow Reactor For Solar Uv Water Disinfection, Margaret M. Busse

Open Access Theses

Lack of access to safe water is a common problem in many developing countries (UNICEF/WHO, 2011). Fortunately, solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation is abundantly available in many of these same areas, and it has been used to accomplish disinfection of drinking water by processes that involve no electrical power, such as solar water disinfection (SODIS). However, conventional SODIS systems are limited by batch processing and exclusion of UVB radiation, which is the most germicidally-active portion of the UV spectrum (Coohill and Sagripanti, 2008). To address these limitations, a continuous-flow solar UV disinfection system was developed to amplify ambient solar UV radiation, …

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) which are the crystalline regions of elementary microfibrils found in cellulose are becoming a promising biocompatible nanoscale building block. We report on the generation, evolution, and drying of CNC capsules with oil cores, obtained from double emulsion drops. Microcapillary devices were used to generate the double emulsion drops with outer diameters ranging from 75 to 225 µm, and shell thicknesses ranging from 5 to 60 µm. 10 wt% aqueous CNC suspensions without and with the addition of PEGDA, a UV-crosslinkable binder, were used as the shell material while 10 cSt PDMS oil was used in the core. …

Transfers To A Gravitational Saddle Point: An Extended Mission Design Option For Lisa Pathfinder, Andrew D. Cox Apr 2016

Transfers To A Gravitational Saddle Point: An Extended Mission Design Option For Lisa Pathfinder, Andrew D. Cox

Open Access Theses

Any possible LISA Pathfinder extended mission will immediately follow the primary mission after completion of scientific observations and technical demonstrations in a Sun-Earth L1 libration point orbit. One extended mission concept with scientific appeal is a spacecraft path that includes multiple encounters with a gravitational equilibrium point. This point, also termed a saddle point, exists where the total gravitational acceleration sums to zero and is distinct from the five Lagrange points in the three-body problem. This investigation seeks a strategy to design such a path subject to a variety of constraints. Periodic, quasi-periodic, and manifold structures are explored to …

Nanoscale Phonon Thermal Conductivity Via Molecular Dynamics, Jonathan M. Dunn Apr 2016

Nanoscale Phonon Thermal Conductivity Via Molecular Dynamics, Jonathan M. Dunn

Open Access Theses

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations provide a useful and simple means of calculating the nanoscale thermal properties of materials, which requires special analysis since the thermal properties of materials change when their dimensions reach the nanoscale. In this research, MD is used to investigate the nanoscale phonon thermal transport of materials that are attracting much interest in the areas of materials science and nuclear physics. In order to evaluate two distinct methods of calculating the thermal conductivity of materials using MD, the simulation methods are first applied to Si. Once an understanding of each simulation method is established, they are then …

Utilizing Tunable Signal Interference Control Topologies With Electromechanical Resonators, Bryce A. Geesey Apr 2016

Utilizing Tunable Signal Interference Control Topologies With Electromechanical Resonators, Bryce A. Geesey

Open Access Theses

Exploiting knowledge gained from previous investigations of channelized and trans-versal filters, signal interference filters use transmission line differences to generate transmission zeros through phase-shifted combinations of signals at the output of a device. The transmission lines used in these circuits are straightforward to design, but are limited to high-frequency signals (on the order of a few gigahertz) due to the necessity for spatial compactness and low loss. More recent studies have used electromechanical resonators to achieve phase shifting and quality factor improvements at slightly-lower frequencies. These concepts may prove useful if extended to micro- and nanoscale resonators.

To explore signal …

The Effect Of Confinement On The Development Of An Axisymmetric Wall Jet In Confined Jet Impingement, Tianqi Guo Apr 2016

The Effect Of Confinement On The Development Of An Axisymmetric Wall Jet In Confined Jet Impingement, Tianqi Guo

Open Access Theses

Impinging jets have been widely used in the industry for cooling, heating, drying and many other purposes due to their excellent level of mass and heat transfer capacities. When issued into a confinement gap fully filled with working liquid, which is a typical configuration for the compact cooling devices designed to handle the extremely high heat fluxes generated by continuously working electronic components, they are classified as submerged confined impingement jets. Though the complicated flow field induced by the jet has attracted enormous amount of research efforts from heat transfer as well as fluid dynamics points of view, many key …

Phase Of Flight Identification In General Aviation Operations, Valentine Pascale Goblet Apr 2016

Phase Of Flight Identification In General Aviation Operations, Valentine Pascale Goblet

Open Access Theses

Identifying phases of flight in General Aviation can help in identifying safety events, which are events which may result in the aircraft being in a hazardous state. Unlike commercial operations that have well-defined phases of flight such as taxi, takeoff, climb, cruise, descent, approach, and landing, GA missions have more hard-to-identify phases of flight. For example, pilot training missions can involve multiple “touch-and-go” maneuvers, which make it difficult to define a distinct cruise phase during the patterns. Here, we present an algorithm to automatically identifying phases of flight in GA. The method includes an algorithm to tailor the phase of …

Mixed Mesh/Nodal Magnetic Equivalent Circuit Modeling Of A Six-Phase Claw-Pole Automotive Alternator, Daniel C. Horvath Apr 2016

Mixed Mesh/Nodal Magnetic Equivalent Circuit Modeling Of A Six-Phase Claw-Pole Automotive Alternator, Daniel C. Horvath

Open Access Theses

Magnetic equivalent circuits (MECs) have been employed by many researchers to model the relationship between magnetic flux and current in electromagnetic systems such as electric machines, transformers and inductors [1] ,[2]. Magnetic circuits are analogous to electric circuits where voltage, current, resistance and conductance are the respective counterparts of magneto-motive force (MMF), magnetic flux, reluctance and permeance. The solution of MECs can be accomplished with the plethora of techniques developed for electrical circuit analysis. Specifically, mesh analysis, based on Kirchoff’s Voltage Law (KVL), and nodal analysis, based on Kirchoffs Current Law (KCL), are two very common solution techniques. Once an …

User-Centric Workload Analytics: Towards Better Cluster Management, Suhas Raveesh Javagal Apr 2016

User-Centric Workload Analytics: Towards Better Cluster Management, Suhas Raveesh Javagal

Open Access Theses

Effective management of computing clusters and providing a high quality customer support is not a trivial task. Due to rise of community clusters there is an increase in the diversity of workloads and the user demographic. Owing to this and privacy concerns of the user, it is difficult to identify performance issues, reduce resource wastage and understand implicit user demands. In this thesis, we perform in-depth analysis of user behavior, performance issues, resource usage patterns and failures in the workloads collected from a university-wide community cluster and two clusters maintained by a government lab. We also introduce a set of …

Dynamic Green Split Optimization In Intersection Signal Design For Urban Street Network, Peng Jiao Apr 2016

Dynamic Green Split Optimization In Intersection Signal Design For Urban Street Network, Peng Jiao

Open Access Theses

In the past few decades, auto travel demand in the United States has significantly increased, but roadway capacity unfortunately has not expanded as quickly, which has led to severe levels of highway traffic congestion in many areas. In theory, the problem of congestion addressed through demand management and roadway expansion. However, system expansion in urban areas is difficult due to the extremely high cost of land; therefore, maximizing the existing capacity therefore often is considered the most realistic option. In urban areas, most of the traffic congestion and delays typically occur at signalized intersections. This thesis aims to prove the …

Modifications To Johanson's Roll Compaction Model For Improved Relative Density Predictions, Yu Liu Apr 2016

Modifications To Johanson's Roll Compaction Model For Improved Relative Density Predictions, Yu Liu

Open Access Theses

Johanson’s roll compaction model [J.R. Johanson, A rolling theory for granular solids, ASME Journal of Applied Mechanics E32 (1965) 842–848] is modified to improve its predictions of a compacted ribbon’s relative density. Previous work has shown that the maximum roll pressure and ribbon relative density predicted by the Johanson model are not only larger than those predicted from finite element method (FEM) simulations, but also unphysical in some cases. This over-prediction is due to a one-dimensional flow assumption in the Johanson model. Real powder velocity profiles within a roll compactor are non-uniform.

Johanson’s analysis is modified in this work to …

Dynamic Sensor Tasking And Imm Ekf Estimation For Tracking Impulsively Maneuvering Satellites, Arthur A. Lace Apr 2016

Dynamic Sensor Tasking And Imm Ekf Estimation For Tracking Impulsively Maneuvering Satellites, Arthur A. Lace

Open Access Theses

In order to efficiently maintain space situational awareness, care must be taken to optimally allocate expensive observation resources. In most situations the available sensors capable of tracking spacecraft have their time split between many different monitoring responsibilities. Tracking maneuvering spacecraft can be especially difficult as the schedule of maneuvers may not be known and will often throw off previous orbital models. Effectively solving this tasking problem is an ongoing focus of research in the area of space situational awareness. Most methods of automated tasking do not make use of interacting multiple model extended Kalman filter techniques to better track satellites …

Energy Dashboard For Real-Time Evaluation Of A Heat Pump Assisted Solar Thermal System, David Allen Lotz Apr 2016

Energy Dashboard For Real-Time Evaluation Of A Heat Pump Assisted Solar Thermal System, David Allen Lotz

Open Access Theses

The emergence of net-zero energy buildings, buildings that generate at least as much energy as they consume, has lead to greater use of renewable energy sources such as solar thermal energy. One example is a heat pump assisted solar thermal system, which uses solar thermal collectors with an electrical heat pump backup to supply space heating and domestic hot water. The complexity of such a system can be somewhat problematic for monitoring and maintaining a high level of performance. Therefore, an energy dashboard was developed to provide comprehensive and user friendly performance metrics for a solar heat pump system. Once …

Design Of An Asymmetric Reluctance Machine For A Generator Application, Bryan David Marquet

Open Access Theses

This work compares an Asymmetric Reluctance Machine (ARM) to a Uniform air Gap Reluctance Machine (UGRM) for a generator application. The ARM employs an asymmetric rotor pole to increase machine performance, specifically increasing torque density. A multi-objective optimization is employed to minimize mass and loss subject to design constraints. Two machines are compared in terms of their Pareto-optimal fronts.

Mining Big Data To Create A Tool For Empirical Observation Of Continuous Safety Improvement In A Construction Company - A Progressive Case Study In The Lean Environment, Nicolas J. Michuda

Open Access Theses

In any iterative process, without a system of measurement, controlled improvement cannot be recorded. This is especially true in the construction industry, where error occurs, often with fatal repercussions. As part of a process to facilitate the establishment of this metric, an entirely new application was created. The goal of this application is to measure the causal factors that lead to incidents, which will allow the user and administration to track the circumstances and types of incidents. This enables the company to focus on these problem areas and improve through training. By analyzing these incident trends over time, the company …
