Design Of A 3d-Printed Device For Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy Calibration As A Step Towards Clinical Translation, Nontapoth Vongkittiargorn
Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
The diffusive reflectance and spectroscopic microendoscopy (DRSME) is a multimodal imaging system that harnesses its usefulness from different light sources. One of the modalities, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), has been used in our lab to investigate optical properties of epithelial tissues using a broadband white light as the main source. Calibration of DRS is required as it can obtain the maximum intensity and convert it to absolute reflectance. Current manual-adjusted calibration can be lengthy and often lead to inconsistent results. Therefore, a new method of calibration is introduced where additive manufacturing (or 3D printing) technology is fully utilized.
The instrumentation …

Potential Application Of Ultra-High Performance Fiber-Reinforced Concrete With Wet-Mix Shotcrete System In Tunneling, Jean Gamarra
Civil Engineering Theses - Archive
In the tunneling industry, shotcrete has been used for several decades. The use of shotcrete or wet-mix spray-on methods allows the application of this method in complex underground profiles and shapes. The need for time efficient spraying methods and constructability for lining coverage opens the door for technologies like steel and synthetic fiber reinforced shotcrete to achieve a uniform and a good quality product. An important advantage of the application of fiber reinforced concrete in shotcrete systems for tunneling is that almost no steel fixing is required. This leads to several other advantages including safer working conditions during excavation, less …

Experimental And Theoretical Analyses Of The Structural, Electronic And Magnetic Properties Of Novel Inverted Core-Shell A-Cr2o3@A-Mxcr2-Xo3-Y (M=Co, Ni, Mn, Fe) Nanoparticles, Mohammad Delower Hossain
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
I used hydrothermal nano-phase epitaxy technique to synthesize well-ordered a-Cr2O3@a-MxCr2-xO3 (M = Co, Ni, Mn, Fe) inverted core-shell nanoparticles (NPs). This resulted in the formation of novel a-MxCr2-xO3 shells having ferromagnetic/ferrimagnetic (FM/FiM) spin ordering and an antiferromagnetic (AFM) a-Cr2O3 core structure. The combined results from Xray diffraction (XRD) and high resolution transmission electron microscoy (HRTEM) provide evidence of the presence of the corundum phase both in the shell and in the core regions. HRTEM results also show a sharp interface exhibiting epitaxial atomic registry of shell atoms over highly ordered core atoms whereas TEM-Energy dispersive spectroscopy analyses show that the …

Rapid, Low-Cost Biosensor For Water-Borne Pathogens In Low-Resource Environments, Kimberly Cribbs
Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
When testing water quality, “microbiological results typically require a minimum of 24 hours to complete” due to reliance on the traditional and inexpensive cultivation method. In 2000, an isothermal DNA amplification method termed loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) was invented allowing for microbiological assessments to be performed in less than one hour without the need for an expensive thermocycler. In 2013, the World Health Organization reported LAMP as an “attractive diagnostic platform for resource-poor settings: it is fast [15-40 min], isothermal [requiring only a heat block], robust to inhibitors and reaction conditions that usually adversely affect PCR methods, and it generates …

Effects Of Vertical Ground Motion On Seismic Performance Of Reinforced Concrete Flat-Plate Buildings, Sara Jean George
Effects Of Vertical Ground Motion On Seismic Performance Of Reinforced Concrete Flat-Plate Buildings, Sara Jean George
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Reinforced concrete flat plate is a type of structural system widely used for office and residential buildings in many areas including those with high seismic risk. In the regions of high seismicity, moment frames or shear walls are employed to resist lateral loading while the flat-plate system is designed to primarily resist gravity loading. Flat-plate structures must maintain lateral deformation capacity as well as resist gravity loading under seismic loads. The deformation capacity of a slab-column connection is a function of vertical shear transferred from slab to column. The effects of vertical loading become even more exaggerated when the flat-plate …

Graphene’S Electronic Surface States On Metal Substrates, Alex De Palma
Nanoscale Science & Engineering (discontinued with class year 2014)
Graphene is a 2-‐D sheet of sp2 bonded carbon atoms with exceptional electrical properties. Particularly, graphene has a very high carrier mobility (~200,000 cm2/V·∙s). This is largely due to graphene’s unique electronic structure, wherein charge carriers are effectively massless Dirac fermions. However, the unique electronic structure of graphene has been shown to be affected by the underlying substrate. In this study, we characterize the electronic structure of graphene on copper. Electron energy loss spectroscopy is employed to observe the surface plasmon excitations of graphene. A small pi plasmon excitation is observed, suggesting that the graphene/Cu interaction is weak and non-‐covalent. …
