Control System Research And Development To Support Virtual Prototyping Of Pump And Motors, Rajith Weerasinghe, Monika Ivantysynova, Paul Kalbfleisch Sep 2016

Control System Research And Development To Support Virtual Prototyping Of Pump And Motors, Rajith Weerasinghe, Monika Ivantysynova, Paul Kalbfleisch

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Virtual prototyping of positive pumps and motors is incredibly useful, increasing speed of development and lowering cost. The calculations of fluids discharge pressure, displaced by a swashplate-type-axial piston pump/motor is dependent on the load impedance driven by the unit. The load impedance is estimated by a variable orifice found downstream of the unit. Similarly, the suction line impedance is also estimated with an orifice. The current project aims to evaluate the various loading architectures in their ability to quickly and accurately create the desired impedance. The robustness of the loading architectures was tested on a wide range of pump sizes, …

Landmark Detection With Surprise Saliency Using Convolutional Neural Networks, Feng Tang, Damian Lyons, Daniel Leeds Sep 2016

Landmark Detection With Surprise Saliency Using Convolutional Neural Networks, Feng Tang, Damian Lyons, Daniel Leeds

Faculty Publications

Abstract—Landmarks can be used as reference to enable people or robots to localize themselves or to navigate in their environment. Automatic definition and extraction of appropriate landmarks from the environment has proven to be a challenging task when pre-defined landmarks are not present. We propose a novel computational model of automatic landmark detection from a single image without any pre-defined landmark database. The hypothesis is that if an object looks abnormal due to its atypical scene context (what we call surprise saliency), it then may be considered as a good landmark because it is unique and easy to spot by …

Support Vector Machines And Artificial Neural Networks: Assessing The Validity Of Using Technical Features For Security Forecasting, James Di Padua Sep 2016

Support Vector Machines And Artificial Neural Networks: Assessing The Validity Of Using Technical Features For Security Forecasting, James Di Padua

Dissertations

Stock forecasting is an enticing and well studied problem in both finance and machine learning literature with linear based models such as ARIMA and ARCH to nonlinear Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) and Support Vector Machines (SVM). However, these forecasting techniques also use very different input features, some of which are seen by economists as irrational and theoretically unjustified. In this comparative study using ANNs and SVMs for 12 publicly traded companies, derivative price “technicals” are evaluated against macro and microeconomic fundamentals to evaluate the efficacy of model performance. Despite the efficient market hypothesis positing the ill suitability of technicals as …

Computer Science and Engineering Master's Theses

With advancement of research in robotics and computer vision, an increasingly high number of applications require the understanding of a scene in three dimensions. A variety of systems are deployed to do the same. This thesis explores a novel 3D imaging technique. This involves the use of catadioptric cameras in a stereoscopic arrangement. A secondary system aims to stabilize the system in the event that the cameras are misaligned during operation. The system provides a stark advantage due to it being a cost effective alternative to present day standard state-of-the-art systems that achieve the same goal of 3D imaging. The …

Comparison Of Mixed-Mode S-Parameters In Weak And Strong Coupled Differential Pairs, Marina Koledintseva, Tracey Vincent Sep 2016

Comparison Of Mixed-Mode S-Parameters In Weak And Strong Coupled Differential Pairs, Marina Koledintseva, Tracey Vincent

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, it is studied how the rate of coupling (weak vs. strong) in edge-coupled differential transmission lines on a printed circuit board (PCB) affects frequency behavior of mixed-mode S-parameters. This is important for signal integrity (SI), and also may be useful from electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) point of view, since the enhancement of mode conversion (from common-mode to differential mode, and vice versa) may result in common-mode noise in high-speed digital electronics. Slightly imbalanced in length microstrip and strip line differential pairs are considered. The study is done using full-wave numerical electromagnetic simulations. Various technological features are modeled in …

A Novel Beam-Steering Nonlinear Nanoantenna With Surface Plasmon Resonance, Xiaoyan Y.Z. Xiong, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Wei E.I. Sha, Yat Hei Lo, Weng Cho Chew

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Plasmonic nanostructures that support surface plasmon (SP) resonance potentially provide a route for the development of nanoengineered nonlinear optical media. In this work, a novel plasmonic particle-in-cavity nanoantenna (PIC-NA) is proposed. The second harmonic generation (SHG) of the PIC-NA under strong localized SP resonance is systematically analyzed by a self-consistent numerical solution based on boundary element method (BEM). The developed method solves the fundamental field and second harmonic (SH) field together iteratively to capture their mutual coupling. Strong enhancement of SHG from PIC-NA is achieved. The SHG enhancement factor is around four orders of magnitude, which is much higher than …

A Full Wave Conductor Modeling Using Augmented Electric Field Integral Equation, Tian Xia, Hui Gan, Michael Wei, Qin Liu, Lijun Jiang, Weng Cho Chew, Henning Braunisch, Kemal Aygun, Zhiguo Qian, Alaeddin Aydiner

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A numerical full wave solver is proposed to solve conductor problems in electromagnetics. This method is an extension of the dielectric augmented electric field integral equation (D-AEFIE). Using this method, conductors, from lowly lossy to highly lossy, can be rigorously modeled to capture the conductive losses. Broadband stability can be achieved, thanks to the introduction of the augmentation technique. This paper demonstrates the formulation of this method. A simple and effective preconditioner is introduced to accelerate the convergence. A novel integration scheme is adopted to accurately capture the losses inside the conductor. Finally some numerical examples are shown to support …

Coupling Dgtd And Behavioral Macromodel For Transient Heterogeneous Electromagnetic Simulations, Huan Huan Zhang, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, He Ming Yao, Yu Zhang Sep 2016

Coupling Dgtd And Behavioral Macromodel For Transient Heterogeneous Electromagnetic Simulations, Huan Huan Zhang, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, He Ming Yao, Yu Zhang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A novel transient field-circuit cosimulation method based on the discontinuous Galerkin time domain (DGTD) method and circuit behaviour macromodels for heterogeneous electromagnetics such as EMC problems is proposed. The traditional field-circuit simulation method needs to know the detail of the circuits, which cannot handle problems with unknown systems due to IP protections. To overcome this problem, the proposed method utilizes the artificial neural network (ANN) to create trainable behavioral macromodels of the unknown circuits based on the port currents and port voltages. The obtained macromodel is then coupled with DGTD that describes the behavior of electromagnetic subsystem to form equations …

Fabrication Of Nano Patterned Arrays And Optical Applications, Aktaruzzaman Al-Hossain Sep 2016

Fabrication Of Nano Patterned Arrays And Optical Applications, Aktaruzzaman Al-Hossain

Student Theses and Dissertations

Most of the researches in developing arrayed patterns have utilized the lithography process with pre-patterned structures. However, lithography itself is considerably low efficient in terms of cost and time, especially by the chemical etching process. Furthermore, the chemical etching process is also a potential barrier in three dimensional structures with multi-layered patterns. The limitation of substrate and mask size is also disadvantageous to the larger area in real-time fabrication process. In this study, a new approach using the solid thin-film dewetting process with intense pulsed light annealing and optical study towards wavelength transformation is introduced to overcome the addressed problems. …

Using Spatialisation To Support Exploratory Search Behaviour, Clement Roux Sep 2016

Using Spatialisation To Support Exploratory Search Behaviour, Clement Roux

Dissertations

Information-seekers traditionally interact with digital content through keyword-based search interfaces displaying results in list views. Well-defined lookup search tasks are performed brilliantly with these interfaces, enabling users to find relevant information and develop a relative understanding of the underlying information space. However, it is feasible to suggest that ill-defined and abstract search tasks could be better supported with a different interface that could allow the user to explore a library’s content and develop an appropriate mental model of the information space. One such approach is based on the use of visualisation, an approach to data analysis that aims to reduce …

Investigating The Impact Of Unsupervised Feature-Extraction From Multi-Wavelength Image Data For Photometric Classification Of Stars, Galaxies And Qsos, Annika Lindh

Dissertations

This thesis reviews the current state of photometric classification in Astronomy and identifies two main gaps: a dependence on handcrafted rules, and a lack of interpretability in the more successful classifiers. To address this, Deep Learning and Computer Vision were used to create a more interpretable model, using unsupervised training to reduce human bias.

The main contribution is the investigation into the impact of using unsupervised feature-extraction from multi-wavelength image data for the classification task. The feature-extraction is achieved by implementing an unsupervised Deep Belief Network to extract lower-dimensionality features from the multi-wavelength image data captured by the Sloan Digital …

Routing Algorithm With Uneven Clustering For Energy Heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Networks, Ying Zhang, Wei Xiong, Dezhi Han, Wei Chen, Jun Wang Sep 2016

Routing Algorithm With Uneven Clustering For Energy Heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Networks, Ying Zhang, Wei Xiong, Dezhi Han, Wei Chen, Jun Wang

Computer Science Faculty Research

Aiming at the “hotspots” problem in energy heterogeneous wireless sensor networks, a routing algorithm of heterogeneous sensor network with multilevel energies based on uneven clustering is proposed. In this algorithm, the energy heterogeneity of the nodes is fully reflected in the mechanism of cluster-heads’ election. It optimizes the competition radius of the cluster-heads according to the residual energy of the nodes. This kind of uneven clustering prolongs the lifetime of the cluster-heads with lower residual energies or near the sink nodes. In data transmission stage, the hybrid multihop transmission mode is adopted, and the next-hop routing election fully takes account …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

On-line condition monitoring is of paramount importance for multilevel converters used in safety-critical applications. A novel on-line diagnostic method for detecting open-circuit switch faults in neutral-point-clamped (NPC) multilevel converters is introduced in this paper. The principle of this method is based on monitoring the abnormal variation of the dc-bus neutral-point current in combination with the existing information on instantaneous switching states and phase currents. Advantages of this method include simpler implementation and faster detection speed compared to other existing diagnostic methods in the literature. In this method, only one additional current sensor is required for measuring the dc-bus neutral-point current, …

A Fault-Tolerant T-Type Multilevel Inverter Topology With Soft-Switching Capability Based On Si And Sic Hybrid Phase Legs, Jiangbiao He, Nathan Weise, Ramin Katebi, Lixiang Wei, Nabeel Demerdash Sep 2016

A Fault-Tolerant T-Type Multilevel Inverter Topology With Soft-Switching Capability Based On Si And Sic Hybrid Phase Legs, Jiangbiao He, Nathan Weise, Ramin Katebi, Lixiang Wei, Nabeel Demerdash

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The performance of a novel three-phase four-leg fault-tolerant T-Type inverter topology is presented in this paper, which significantly improves the inverter's fault-tolerant capability regarding device switch faults. In this new modular inverter topology, only the redundant leg is composed of Silicon Carbide (SiC) power devices and all other phase legs are constituted by Silicon (Si) devices. The addition of the redundant leg, not only provides fault-tolerant solution to switch faults that could occur in the T-Type inverter, but also can share load current with other phase legs. Moreover, quasi zero-voltage switching (ZVS) and zero-current switching (ZCS) in the Si Insulated-Gate …

Mechanical Stimulation Increases Knee Meniscus Gene Rna-Level Expression In Adipose-Derived Stromal Cells, Elizabeth M. Meier, Bin Wu, Aamir Siddiqui, Donna G. Tepper, Michael T. Longaker, Mai T. Lam

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research Publications

Background: Efforts have been made to engineer knee meniscus tissue for injury repair, yet most attempts have been unsuccessful. Creating a cell source that resembles the complex, heterogeneous phenotype of the meniscus cell remains difficult. Stem cell differentiation has been investigated, mainly using bone marrow mesenchymal cells and biochemical means for differentiation, resulting in no solution. Mechanical stimulation has been investigated to an extent with no conclusion. Here, we explore the potential for and effectiveness of mechanical stimulation to induce the meniscal phenotype in adipose-derived stromal cells.

Methods: Human adipose-derived stromal cells were chosen for their fibrogenic nature and conduciveness …

Creep And Recovery Behavior Of Polymeric And Chemically Treated Asphalt Binders, Mohammed Ziaur Rahaman Sep 2016

Creep And Recovery Behavior Of Polymeric And Chemically Treated Asphalt Binders, Mohammed Ziaur Rahaman

Student Theses and Dissertations

For quality assurance and quality control purposes, suppliers and users of asphalt binders follow the widely used dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) test method (AASHTO T 315) to capture viscoelastic properties of polymer-modified binders (PMBs), warm mix asphalt (WMA)- and reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP)- modified binders even though it is designed for unmodified asphalt binders. AASHTO T 315 is inadequate to characterize the aforementioned binders because of the relatively small impact of the phase angle and strain levels on the rutting and fatigue factors, respectively. The recently balloted multiple stress creep recovery (MSCR) test (AASHTO T 350) results can better relate …

An Exploration Of The Impact Of Animal Agriculture On Human Sustainable Development Index And The Child Health Indicator, Hithesan Pandian Sep 2016

An Exploration Of The Impact Of Animal Agriculture On Human Sustainable Development Index And The Child Health Indicator, Hithesan Pandian

Dissertations

Several studies have shown that animal agriculture is one of the major contributors to climate change due to greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, land degradation, freshwater shortages, general environmental pollution and world hunger. Apart from this, meat consumption is strongly associated with certain fatal health conditions such as cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes (Wu, 2014). Although meat production and export could be economically beneficial in the short run, it could lead to over-exploitation of natural resources and in turn the destruction of the environment in the long run. Hence, it is essential for the leaders of a nation to make smart …

Partial Oxidation Of Surrogate Jet-A Fuel Over Sio2 Supported Moo2, Shreya Shah, Oscar G. Marin-Flores, Chinnathambi Karthik, M. Grant Norton, Su Ha

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

A SiO2-supported MoO2 nanoparticle catalyst was synthesized by a sol-gel method and tested as catalytic material for the partial oxidation of n-dodecane. MoO2 nanoparticles supported on SiO2 are °C, which is a typical reforming temperature for n-dodecane. The formation of Mo O Si bonds at the interface between MoO2 nanoparticles and SiO2 support appear to be responsible for the enhanced stability to sintering displayed by the nanoparticles. As a result of this particle size stabilization, SiO2 supported MoO2 nanoparticles show an improved reforming activity in terms of syngas generation …

Absolute Positioning Using The Earth's Magnetic Anomaly Field, Aaron J. Canciani Sep 2016

Absolute Positioning Using The Earth's Magnetic Anomaly Field, Aaron J. Canciani

Theses and Dissertations

Achieving worldwide alternatives to GPS is a challenging engineering problem. Current GPS alternatives often suffer from limitations such as where and when the systems can operate. Navigation using the Earth's magnetic anomaly field, which is globally available at all times, shows promise to overcome many of these limitations. We present a navigation filter which uses the Earth's magnetic anomaly field as a navigation signal to aid an inertial navigation system (INS) in an aircraft. The filter utilizes highly-accurate optically pumped cesium (OPC) magnetometers to make scalar measurements of the Earth's magnetic field and compare them to a map using a …

Degradation Of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer And Graphite By Laser Heating, Nicholas C. Herr Sep 2016

Degradation Of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer And Graphite By Laser Heating, Nicholas C. Herr

Theses and Dissertations

The availability of high power, diode pumped solid state and fiber lasers at powers 10 kW and shorter wavelengths (1.07 micrometer) has invigorated the development of tactical laser weapons. This shift to tactical missions greatly increases the variety of potential targets including carbon fiber reinforced polymers and related materials. The complexity of laser-material interactions has driven a historical reliance on live-fire testing and empirical models, but this becomes more difficult as the number of target materials grow. This dissertation combines thermal imagery and existing thermal models of the fire response of composite materials to develop a hybrid modeling approach of …
