Improved Harmonic Suppression Efficiency Of Single-Phase Apfs In Distorted Distribution Systems, Samet Biricik, Soydan Redif, Shafiuzzaman Khadem, Malabika Basu

Articles

In this study, a control method is proposed to improve the harmonic suppression efficiency of the single phase active power filter in a distorted power system to suppress current harmonics and reactive power. The proposed method uses the self-tuning filter (STF) algorithm to process single phase grid voltage in order to provide a uniform reference grid current, which increases the efficiency of the system. The results of the simulation study are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control technique in this study.

Comparison Of Hydrologic Model Performance Statistics Using Thiessen Polygon Rain Gauge And Nexrad Precipitation Input Methods At Different Watershed Spatial Scales And Rainfall Return Frequencies, Amanda E. Tancreto

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As hydrological computer modeling software continues to increase in complexity, the need for further understanding of the value of different model input datasets becomes apparent. Frequently used precipitation model input include rain gauge data and next-generation radar–based (NEXRAD) rainfall data. Rain gauge data are usually interpolated across a model domain using various methods including the Thiessen Polygon methodology, which may be data-sparse in some areas and overly data-dense in others. However, rain gauge data are generally very easy to use in hydrologic model development, often requiring little to no data processing. NEXRAD data have the potential to improve hydrologic runoff …

Strategies for improving student success are particularly important in high-demand fields like science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). As the U.S. experiences a decline in skilled STEM workers and a growing number of racial/ethnic minorities, it is critical that more attention be paid to the college success of underrepresented populations majoring in STEM. While some strategies for increasing STEM student success have focused on social-psychological factors such as academic self-efficacy and resilience, little attention has been given to these factors among specific minority groups in STEM such as Black men. To extend the current literature, interviews with 27 Black male …

Comparison Of Lock-In And Pulse-Phase Thermography For Defect Characterization In Frp Composites Applied To Concrete, Jeff Brown, Sai Harsha Chittineni

Publications

Thermal imaging is a well-established technique for the non-destructive evaluation of FRP composites applied to reinforced concrete. Defect characterization using IR thermography, however, remains a topic of on-going research, and there are currently no universally accepted standards for data collection or interpretation. This research involved large scale thermography inspection of two FRP strengthened bridge girders that were removed from service after approximately 10 years of service in a potentially corrosive marine environment. Trial inspections were performed on test areas where defects could be identified using sounding methods. Two procedures showed the most promise for identifying and characterizing defects: sinusoidal (lock-in …

Photonic Crystal Fibre Wgm Resonators For Magnetic Field Sensing, Aseel Mahmood, Vishnu Kavungal, Yuliya Semenova, S. S. Ahmed

Conference Papers

Whispering gallery mode (WGM) micro-resonators are remarkable optical devices whose small modevolumes and high Q-factors make them attractive for a wide range of applications such as filters, lasers, modulators and sensors [1]. WGMs can be excited in dielectric structures with circular symmetry, such as microspheres, micro-disks, and optical fibres, and can be imagined as closed-trajectory rays confined within the cavity by almost total reflections from the curved surface of the resonator. The spectral positions of the WGM resonances are highly sensitive to the geometrical dimensions of the resonator and refractive indices of both the resonator itself and its surrounding medium …

This study seeks to provide evaluation methods for characterizing the biomechanics of wheelchair use by children with spinal cord injury (SCI). Twelve subjects with SCI underwent motion analysis while they propelled their wheelchair at a self-selected speed and propulsion pattern. Upper extremity joint kinematics, forces, and moments were computed using …

Robust, Low Power, Discrete Gate Sizing, Anthony Joseph Casagrande Jan 2015

Robust, Low Power, Discrete Gate Sizing, Anthony Joseph Casagrande

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Ultra-deep submicron circuits require accurate modeling of gate delay in order to meetaggressive timing constraints. With the lack of statistical data, variability due to the mechanical manufacturing process and its chemical properties poses a challenging problem. Discrete gate sizing requires (i) accurate models that take into account random parametric variation and (ii) a fair allocation of resources to optimize the solution. The proposed GTFUZZ gate sizing algorithm handles both tasks. Gate sizing is modeled as a resource allocation problem using fuzzy game theory. Delay is modeled as a constraint and power is optimized in this algorithm. In GTFUZZ, delay is …

Self-Assembly Kinetics Of Microscale Components: A Parametric Evaluation, Jose Miguel Carballo Jan 2015

Self-Assembly Kinetics Of Microscale Components: A Parametric Evaluation, Jose Miguel Carballo

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The goal of the present work is to develop, and evaluate a parametric model of a basic microscale Self-Assembly (SA) interaction that provides scaling predictions of process rates as a function of key process variables. At the microscale, assembly by “grasp and release” is generally challenging. Recent research efforts have proposed adapting nanoscale self-assembly (SA) processes to the microscale. SA offers the potential for reduced equipment cost and increased throughput by harnessing attractive forces (most commonly, capillary) to spontaneously assemble components. However, there are challenges for implementing microscale SA as a commercial process. The existing lack of design tools prevents …

Laboratory Evaluation Of Organic Soil Mixing, Spencer Dean Baker Jan 2015

Laboratory Evaluation Of Organic Soil Mixing, Spencer Dean Baker

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Organic soils present a difficult challenge for roadway designers and construction due to the high compressibility of the soil structure, the often associated high water table, and the high moisture content. For other soft or loose soils (inorganic soils), stabilization via cement or similar binders (a method called soil mixing) has proven to be an effective solution. To this end, the Federal Highway Administration has published a comprehensive design manual for these techniques. Organic soils, however, are not addressed therein to a level of confidence for design, as organic soils do not follow the trends of inorganic soils. This has …

A Planar Pseudo-Rigid-Body Model For Cantilevers Experiencing Combined Endpoint Forces And Uniformly Distributed Loads Acting In Parallel, Philip James Logan

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation describes the development and effectiveness of a mathematical model used to predict the behavior of cantilever beams whose loading conditions include parallel combinations of evenly distributed loads and endpoint forces. The large deflection of cantilever beams has been widely studied. A number of models and mathematical techniques have been utilized in predicting the endpoint path coordinates and load-deflection relationships of such beams. The Pseudo-Rigid-Body Model (PRBM) is one such method which replaces the elastic beam with rigid links of a parameterized pivot location and torsional spring stiffness. In this paper, the PRBM method is extended to include cases …

Effects Of Solids Retention Time And Feeding Frequency On Performance And Pathogen Fate In Semi-Continuous Mesophilic Anaerobic Digesters, Nathan Daniel Manser

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Anaerobic digestion is a biochemical process in which organic carbon is biodegraded in an oxygen free environment through a microbial consortium. Engineered biological systems used for resource recovery often utilize anaerobic digestion to treat anthropogenic organic wastes by reclaiming the carbon as energy (methane gas) and a soil amendment (biosolids). Small-scale, or household, semi-continuous anaerobic digesters have been used in developed and developing countries for many decades to produce biogas from human and livestock waste, which is used for heating, lighting, and cooking. This application has been shown to improve the quality of life of the user. Although there is …

Reminiscing About 15 Years Of Interoperability Efforts, Herbert Van De Sompel, Michael L. Nelson

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Over the past fifteen years, our perspective on tackling information interoperability problems for web-based scholarship has evolved significantly. In this opinion piece, we look back at three efforts that we have been involved in that aptly illustrate this evolution: OAI-PMH, OAI-ORE, and Memento. Understanding that no interoperability specification is neutral, we attempt to characterize the perspectives and technical toolkits that provided the basis for these endeavors. With that regard, we consider repository-centric and web-centric interoperability perspectives, and the use of a Linked Data or a REST/HATEAOS technology stack, respectively. We also lament the lack of interoperability across nodes that play …

A Fast Approach For Preparation Of Adsorbent From Reed Black Liquor And Its Performance In Equilibrium And Kinetic Gas Separation, G. Yang, Yong Sun, C. Wen, J. Zhang

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

A new approach using reed pulping black liquor by hydrothermal reaction followed by fast carbonization at 350 °C in fluidized bed reactor for 5 minutes was proposed in this paper. The BET specific surface area generated at optimum conditions reached 390 m2 g–1. The CO2 selectivity over CH4 and N2 comparable to commercial activated carbons was obtained. The isosteric enthalpies of adsorption for CO2, CH4 and N2 on the resultant carbon sample prepared at optimum conditions show surface heterogeneity. The kinetic results indicate its potential for separation of carbon dioxide from carbon dioxide/methane mixture.

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Exploitation of an ore deposit can be optimized by adapting the beneficiation processes to the properties of individual ore blocks. This can involve switching in and out certain treatment steps, or setting their controlling parameters. Optimizing this set of decisions requires the full conditional distribution of all relevant physical parameters and chemical attributes of the feed, including concentration of value elements and abundance of penalty elements. As a first step towards adaptive processing, the mapping of adaptive decisions is explored based on the composition, in value and penalty elements, of the selective mining units. Conditional distributions at block support are …

Fabrication Of Tissue Precursors Induced By Shape-Changing Hydrogels, Olukemi O. Akintewe Jan 2015

Fabrication Of Tissue Precursors Induced By Shape-Changing Hydrogels, Olukemi O. Akintewe

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Scaffold based tissue reconstruction inherently limits regenerative capacity due to inflammatory response and limited cell migration. In contrast, scaffold-free methods promise formation of functional tissues with both reduced adverse host reactions and enhanced integration. Cell-sheet engineering is a well-known bottom-up tissue engineering approach that allows the release of intact cell sheet from a temperature responsive polymer such as poly-N-isopropylacrylamide (pNIPAAm). pNIPAAm is an ideal template for culturing cell sheets because it undergoes a sharp volume-phase transition owing to the hydrophilic and hydrophobic interaction around its lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of 32°C, a temperature close to physiological temperature. Compared to …
