The Relationship Between Dna's Physical Properties And The Dna Molecule's Harmonic Signature, And Related Motion In Water--A Computational Investigation, Victor Boyer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This research investigates through computational methods whether the physical properties of DNA contribute to its harmonic signature, the uniqueness of that signature if present, and motion of the DNA molecule in water. When DNA is solvated in water at normal 'room temperature', it experiences a natural vibration due to the Brownian motion of the particles in the water colliding with the DNA. The null hypothesis is that there is no evidence to suggest a relationship between DNA's motion and strand length, while the alternative hypothesis is that there is evidence to suggest a relationship between DNA's vibrational motion and strand …

Traffic Conflict Analysis Under Fog Conditions Using Computer Simulation, Binya Zhang
Traffic Conflict Analysis Under Fog Conditions Using Computer Simulation, Binya Zhang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The weather condition is a crucial influence factor on road safety issues. Fog is one of the most noticeable weather conditions, which has a significant impact on traffic safety. Such condition reduces the road's visibility and consequently can affect drivers' vision, perception, and judgments. The statistical data shows that many crashes are directly or indirectly caused by the low-visibility weather condition. Hence, it is necessary for road traffic engineers to study the relationship of road traffic accidents and their influence factors. Among these factors, the traffic volume and the speed limits in poor visibility areas are the primary reasons that …

Analysis Of Steady State Micro-Droplet Evaporation To Enhance Heat Dissipation From Tiny Surfaces., Harish Voota
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Experimental investigations and numerical predictions of steady state microdroplet evaporation experiments are presented. Steady state droplet evaporation experiments are conducted to understand (1) Droplet contact line influence on evaporation rate efficiency, (2) Droplet contact angle correlation to evaporation rate and (3) Substrate cooling. Experiments are performed on a polymer substrate with a moat like trench (laser patterned) to control droplet contact line dynamics. A bottom-up methodology is implemented for droplet formation on the patterned substrate. Droplet evaporation rates on substrate temperatures 22°C≤ ∆TSubstrate ≤75°C and contact angles 80°≤ Θ ≤110° are measured. For a pinned microdroplet (CCR), volumetric infuse rate …
Parallel Distributed Discrete Event Simulation Optimization Using Complexity And Deep Learning, Edwin Cortes
Parallel Distributed Discrete Event Simulation Optimization Using Complexity And Deep Learning, Edwin Cortes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Parallel distributed discrete event simulation (PDDES) is the execution of a discrete event simulation on a tightly or loosely coupled computer system with multiple processors. The discrete-event simulation model is decomposed into several logical processors (LPs) or simulation objects that can be executed concurrently using partitioning types such as spatial and temporal. PDDES is exceedingly important for the reduction of the simulation time, increase of model size, intellectual property issue mitigation in multi-enterprise simulations, and the sharing of resources. One of the problems with PDDES is the time management to provide flow control over event processing, the process flow, and …
An Investigation Of Physiological Measures In A Marketing Decision Task, Nelson Lerma
An Investigation Of Physiological Measures In A Marketing Decision Task, Nelson Lerma
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The objective of the present study was to understand the use of physiological measures as an alternative to traditional market research tools, such as self-reporting measures and focus groups. For centuries, corporations and researchers have relied almost exclusively on traditional measures to gain insights into consumer behavior. Oftentimes, traditional methods have failed to accurately predict consumer demand, and this has prompted corporations to explore alternative methods that will accurately forecast future sales. One the most promising alternative methods currently being investigated is the use of physiological measures as an indication of consumer preference. This field, also referred to as neuromarketing, …

Graduate Research Posters
We are experimenting on designing a voltage-controlled ultra-low-energy Magnetic Tunneling Junction (MTJ) device using a soft single domain magnetostrictive layer (i.e. Galfenol: Fe1-xGax , x = 20 At%) coupled to a piezoelectric layer (i.e. PMN-PT). Special metal pads have been designed using photolithography to generate stress in the PMN-PT layer by applying electric field. The patterns of different shape anisotropic nano-magnets are designed using e-beam lithography and we have successfully fabricate FeGa nanomagnets with only 12 to 13 nanometer thickness by sputter deposition. These nanomagnets have been characterized by magnetic force microscopy for observing their switching capabilities. …

We have proposed a spintronic infrared photodetector backed by experimental evidence and matched with theoretical prediction obtained in our labs. Unlike conventional photodetectors, it can work at room temperature with ideally infinite light-to-dark contrast ratio, infinite detectivity and zero dark current. The proposed idea is based on smart implementation of spin polarized transport. Electrons while travelling through one-dimensional channel show long spin relaxation length if they can be confined to a single conduction subband because of the elimination of major spin relaxation mechanism, namely the D’yakonov-Perel’ mechanism. With infrared light, electrons can be excited to higher subbands, resulting in the …

Investigation Of Lanthanide-Doped Anatase Tio2 Core-Shell Nanoparticles For Photocatalysis And Gas Sensing, Rezwanur Rahman
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Anatase TiO2 has been shown to be potential applications for photo-remediation of chemical waste as well as for photocatalytic splitting of water. The catalytic properties of TiO2 materials can be modified by doping with lanthanide (Ln) ions. In order to minimize the distortion and/or change of the structure of TiO2 nanoparticles, surface doping of anatase TiO2 nanoparticles (~ 14 nm) with several Ln ions (Nd3+, Gd3+, Eu3+, Yb3+) has been successfully made. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman characterization shows that the anatase phase of treated nanoparticles is well preserved. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) shows that the majority of the nanoparticles …

Nerve and muscle signal sampling proves difficult because of the large difference in magnitudes. Muscle signals loom a hundred or even a thousand times bigger and can hide the nerve signals. The Large Dynamic Range Amplifier plus Analog to Digital Converter (ADC) allows one device to retrieve both muscle and nerve signal information. The device has two parts: the ability to take high-resolution data from tenths of microvolts to several millivolts and filter out environmental noise, such as 60 Hz of electrical power lines or electro galvanic signals. This gives the ability to read muscle and nerve signals using one …

A material-independent model to estimate the transient temperature distribution in a test probe quenched by immersion is presented in this study. This model is based on the assumption that, under one-dimensional unsteady heat conduction, the radial temperature distribution at the end of an interval belongs to the equation of a parabola. The model was validated using AISI 304 stainless steel test probes (Φ8×40 mm and Φ12×60 mm) quenched from 850 to 900 °C in water and in water-based NaNO2 solutions at 25 °C and in canola oil at 50 °C. Additionally, square test probes (20×20×100 mm) were quenched from 550 …

In this thesis, an average current-mode controller is analyzed for controlling power electronic converters. This controller consists of two loops. An inner loop, which senses and controls the inductor current and an outer loop, which is used to control the output voltage and provide reference voltage for the inner current loop. An average current-mode controller averages out high frequency harmonics it senses from the inductor current to provide a smooth DC component. This can be used as a control voltage for a pulse width modulator and produce switching pulses for the power electronic converters. An average current-mode controller can also …

Organophosphates (OPs) are highly toxic insecticides and nerve agents that have been designed to inhibit the hydrolysis of acetylcholine by binding to the serine active site of acetylcholinesterase (AChE). They are one of the most common causes of human poisoning worldwide and are frequently intentionally used in suicides in agricultural areas. For this reason, there is a need for therapeutics to rescue those from intoxication. Obvious ethical concerns prevent humans from being subjected to OP exposure for therapeutic efficacy and safety testing. Therefore, animal surrogates for humans must be appropriately selected. A new paradigm, described herein, incorporating both in silico …

Girder Load Distribution For Seismic Design Of Integral Bridges, Justin Vander Werff, Sri Sritharan
Faculty Work Comprehensive List
Current seismic design practice related to integral bridge girder-to-cap beam connections allows little or no lateral seismic load to be distributed beyond the girders immediately adjacent to the column. However, distribution results from several large-scale tests have shown that the distribution of column seismic moment typically engages all the girders. An approach utilizing simple stiffness models to predict distribution in integral bridge structures is presented in detail; distribution predictions based on grillage analyses also are compared. The experimental results and the analytical results from the stiffness and grillage models show that current design methods related to vertical load distribution are …
