Civil Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

The United States of America is facing an infrastructure crisis that is characterized by aging and deteriorating structures, a significant backlog of maintenance and upgrades for existing infrastructure, limited funding and lack of practical and effective tools for identifying and prioritizing the most pressing infrastructure needs. The American Association of Civil Engineers (ASCE) qualifies America’s infrastructure with a D+(ASCE Report Card). This rating reflects the general state of infrastructure that is unlikely to improve dramatically in the short-term, yet the situation costs the nation billions of dollars annually due to losses in economic efficiency and productivity, and in some cases …

Incentive-Based Negotiation Model For System Of Systems Acquisition, Nil Kilicay-Ergin, Cihan Dagli May 2015

Incentive-Based Negotiation Model For System Of Systems Acquisition, Nil Kilicay-Ergin, Cihan Dagli

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Lack of collaboration between individual systems and systems of systems (SoS) program management is identified as one of the leading problems in SoS acquisition. This is especially a major concern in acknowledged SoS where a designated SoS program management has no authority over the constituent systems. Therefore, it is important to consider mechanisms to persuade individual systems to participate in the SoS development. In SoS where individual systems have their own self-interests, negotiation becomes an important mechanism to increase participation in SoS development. Another mechanism, incentives, is used in a wide range of applications to improve performance and collaboration. In …

Available Work Rate Of A Reversible System Bounded By Constant Thermal Resistances Linked To Isothermal Reservoirs, Jim Mcgovern May 2015

Available Work Rate Of A Reversible System Bounded By Constant Thermal Resistances Linked To Isothermal Reservoirs, Jim Mcgovern

Conference Papers

Exergy analysis is based on the concept of an idealized, all-enclosing reference environment that has infinite heat capacity and thermal conductivity, and is in equilibrium. The actual surroundings of a real plant such as a heat engine, a heat pump or a refrigerator may differ significantly from the ideal. First law performance parameters and second law rational efficiency are examined. The concepts of finite time thermodynamics are applied in an attempt to refine the concept of T0, the environmental reference temperature, thereby making exergy analysis more reflective of reality.

A Method For The Characterization And Selection Of Compliant Joints, Ronald George Saleeby May 2015

A Method For The Characterization And Selection Of Compliant Joints, Ronald George Saleeby

All Theses

A compliant joint is a connection between two bodies that derives its movement from the deflection of flexible members rather than rigid connections, like traditional joints. Compliant joints have potential advantages that include longer part life, reduction of parts in assemblies, and reduced wear. Traditional compliant mechanism design methodologies have limitations involving the burden of necessary knowledge required to satisfactorily use them. The method presented in this thesis was developed to provide compliant joint design solutions independent of the traditional methods of compliant joint design by allowing the selection of compliant joints from a repository. The repository is populated by …

Managing The Economic Constraints Of Foundries And Fabless Enterprises, Charles M. Weber, Jiting Yang May 2015

Managing The Economic Constraints Of Foundries And Fabless Enterprises, Charles M. Weber, Jiting Yang

Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper presents an empirically grounded model, which links organizational learning to pattern-specific fixed costs. The approach described in this paper helps fab managers make fundamental strategic decisions concerning product design and product mix by engaging in scenario planning. Four critical aspects of managing pattern-specific fixed cost are analyzed in detail – sensitivity to time, design cost and production volume; platform designs; process postponement solutions; and design penalties. The model suggests that fabless enterprises and foundries must collaborate extensively on the design and realizations of product platforms for state-of-the-art integrated circuit products to remain economically viable.

Continuum Robots For Space Applications Based On Layer-Jamming Scales With Stiffness Capability, Jessie Lee C. Santiago May 2015

Continuum Robots For Space Applications Based On Layer-Jamming Scales With Stiffness Capability, Jessie Lee C. Santiago

All Theses

Continuum robots, which have continuous mechanical structures comparable to the flexibility in elephant trunks and octopus arms, have been primarily geared toward the medical and defense communities. In space, however, NASA projects these robots to have a place in irregular inspection routines. The inherent compliance and bending of these continuum arms are especially suitable for inspection in obstructed spaces to ensure proper equipment functionality. In this paper, we propose a new solution that improves on the functionality of previous continuum robots, via a novel mechanical scaly layer-jamming design. Layer-jamming assisted continuum arms have previously required pneumatic sources for actuation, which …

Evaluating The Viability Of Graphene Oxide For The Removal Of Ni(Ii) Ions From Waste Water, Cale M. White

Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

When levels of heavy metal ions such as nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), Zinc (Zn), and Cobalt (Co) exceed the tolerance values for industrial wastewater, it can devastate the environment as well as the health of the individuals consuming the water. Heavy metal ions are not biodegradable and will accumulate in organic matter.(1) This accumulation leads to toxic levels in the blood and hence damage to nerve tissue, kidneys, the liver, and other vital organs. (2) Effective removal processes of these heavy metals from water must be developed. This study explores a method to adsorb nickel from water with …

Methodologies For Simplified Lifeline System Risk Assessments, Michael Germeraad May 2015

Methodologies For Simplified Lifeline System Risk Assessments, Michael Germeraad

Master's Theses

Natural hazards are a growing risk across the globe. As regions have urbanized, single events impact greater proportions of the population, and the populations within those regions have become more dependent on infrastructure systems. Regional resilience has become closely tied to the performance of infrastructure. For a comprehensive risk assessment losses caused by lifeline outage must be considered alongside structural and nonstructural risks. Many well developed techniques quantify structural and nonstructural risk; however, there are insufficient procedures to determine the likelihood of lifeline outages. Including lifelines in seismic assessments will provide a comprehensive risk, improving a decision maker’s capacity to …

Using Unrestricted Mobile Sensors To Infer Tapped And Traced User Inputs, Trang Duyen Nguyen May 2015

Using Unrestricted Mobile Sensors To Infer Tapped And Traced User Inputs, Trang Duyen Nguyen

Theses and Dissertations

As of January 2014, 58% of Americans over the age of 18 own a smart phone. Of these smart phones, Android devices provide some security by requiring that third-party application developers declare to users which components and features their applications will access. However, many of the real-time environmental sensors on devices are exempt from this requirement. We evaluate the possibility of exploiting this freedom to discretely use these sensors and expand on previous work by developing an application that can use the gyroscope and accelerometer to interpret what the user has written, even of trace input is used. Trace input …

There is a typo of the space group. All the Pnmb should be Pbnm (or Pnma). So the Glazer notation should be changed to (a-a-c+) for Pbnm space group on page 4 of the article. We have also noticed that the thermodynamic analysis of CaTiO3 thin film is not correct. The films are (001)PC-oriented or (101)-oriented. Therefore, there is no need to rotate the coordinate system (on page 4 of the article). By applying the thin film boundary condition, i.e., ε11 = ε22 = εs, ε …

Measuring Multidimensional Poverty In A Complex Environment; Identifying The Sensitive Links, L. E. Voth-Gaeddert, Daniel B. Oerther

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The central hypothesis of this study is that a holistic, systems-based approach employing multiple analytical tools is useful for identifying the most sensitive links within complex communities to down-scale global development priorities such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Results of latent factor regression, canonical correlation analysis, and structural equation modeling were compared for multiple, publically-available data sets for two rural regions in Brazil and Guatemala. The results of this study confirm previously reported findings, and collectively support the central hypothesis demonstrating a pathway for linking global priorities with the complex realities of 'on-the-ground' development conditions in specific communities.

An Assessment Of The Accuracy Of Ppp In Remote Areas In Oman, Audrey Martin, Rashid Al Alawi May 2015

An Assessment Of The Accuracy Of Ppp In Remote Areas In Oman, Audrey Martin, Rashid Al Alawi

Conference Papers

Traditionally, high accuracy Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) positioning has involved differential techniques. Such techniques significantly reduce or eliminate inherent biases in the GNSS measurement by referencing simultaneous measurements to one or more known reference stations. On a national scale, these differential techniques rely heavily on a costly spatial infrastructure of accurately known points usually occupied by Continually Operating Reference Stations (CORS). In recent years, the development of Precise Point Positioning (PPP) techniques have been shown to reduce many of the inherent observation errors and biases in GNSS solutions which eliminate the need for a ground based reference station. Such …

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Characterization of the structural and optical properties is a subject of significance for nanoporous material research. However, it remains a challenge to find non-destructive methods for investigating the anisotropy of porous thin films with three-dimensional nanostructures. In this thesis, a generalized ellipsometry (GE) analysis approach is employed to study two types of anisotropic nanoporous media: slanted columnar thin films (SCTFs) with polymer infiltration and inverse-SCTF polymeric films. The thesis presents the physical properties obtained from GE analysis, including porosity, columnar shape, principal optical constants, birefringence, etc.

The thesis reports on using a GE analysis approach, combining the homogeneous biaxial layer …

Organometallic Carboxylate Resists For Euv With High Sensitivity, James Passarelli May 2015

Organometallic Carboxylate Resists For Euv With High Sensitivity, James Passarelli

Nanoscale Science & Engineering (discontinued with class year 2014)

We have developed organometallic carboxylate compounds [RnM(O2CR’)2] capable of acting as negative-tone EUV resists. Overall, the best and fastest resists contain antimony, are pentavalent and the carboxylate group contains a polymerizable olefin (e.g. acrylate, methacrylate or styrenecarboxylate). Evidence suggests that high sensitivity is achieved through the polymerization of olefins in the exposed region. We have performed a systematic sensitivity study of molecules of the type RnM(O2CR’)2 where we have studied seven R groups, four main group metals (M), and three polymerizable carboxylate groups (O2CR’). We found that the greatest predictor of sensitivity of the RnSb(O2CR’)2 resists is their level of …
