Practical Guidance For Integrating Data Management Into Long-Term Ecological Monitoring Projects, Robert D. Sutter, Susan Wainscott, John R. Boetsch, Craig Palmer, David J. Rugg
Library Faculty Research
Long-term monitoring and research projects are essential to understand ecological change and the effectiveness of management activities. An inherent characteristic of long-term projects is the need for consistent data collection over time, requiring rigorous attention to data management and quality assurance. Recent papers have provided broad recommendations for data management; however, practitioners need more detailed guidance and examples. We present general yet detailed guidance for the development of comprehensive, concise, and effective data management for monitoring projects. The guidance is presented as a graded approach, matching the scale of data management to the needs of the organization and the complexity …
On The Performance Of Sr And Fr Protocols For Ostbc Based Af-Mimo Relay System With Channel And Noise Correlations, Batu K. Chalise
On The Performance Of Sr And Fr Protocols For Ostbc Based Af-Mimo Relay System With Channel And Noise Correlations, Batu K. Chalise
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
This paper proposes selection relaying (SR) protocol for a cooperative multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay system that consists of a direct link between a source and a destination. The system has only receive-side channel state information (CSI), spatially correlated MIMO channels, and the receiver nodes observe spatially correlated noise. The transmit nodes employ orthogonal space-time block codes (OSTBC), whereas the receiver nodes employ optimum minimum mean-square-error (MMSE) detection. The SR protocol, which transmits via the relay only when the direct link between the source and destination is in outage, is compared with the fixed relaying (FR) protocol which always uses the …

Ensemble Multi-Objective Biogeography-Based Optimization With Application To Automated Warehouse Scheduling, Haiping Ma, Shufei Su, Daniel J. Simon, Minrui Fei
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
This paper proposes an ensemble multi-objective biogeography-based optimization (EMBBO) algorithm, which is inspired by ensemble learning, to solve the automated warehouse scheduling problem. First, a real-world automated warehouse scheduling problem is formulated as a constrained multi-objective optimization problem. Then EMBBO is formulated as a combination of several multi-objective biogeography-based optimization (MBBO) algorithms, including vector evaluated biogeography-based optimization (VEBBO), non-dominated sorting biogeography-based optimization (NSBBO), and niched Pareto biogeography-based optimization (NPBBO). Performance is tested on a set of 10 unconstrained multi-objective benchmark functions and 10 constrained multi-objective benchmark functions from the 2009 Congress on Evolutionary Computation (CEC), and compared with single constituent …
Bending Behavior Of Carbon/Epoxy Composite Isobeam Structures, Brandon A. Asay
Bending Behavior Of Carbon/Epoxy Composite Isobeam Structures, Brandon A. Asay
Theses and Dissertations
This research demonstrated the fabrication, flexural testing, and analysis of nominally 5 ft (1.5 m) 6-bay and 10 ft (3 m) 12-bay carbon/epoxy IsoBeam™ structures. The rectangular cross-section was 5 in (12.7 cm) wide by 10 in (25.4 cm) high. The IsoBeam structure is a composite lattice structure that is a geometric derivative of the IsoTruss® structure. Modifying the geometry to yield a rectangular cross-section provides additional applications for these beams as structural elements in buildings, aircraft, vehicles, and other structures. The diameters of the constituent members of the IsoBeam, namely the longitudinal and diagonal members, were sized such that …

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations
Most urban and regional models used to predict levels of organic particulate matter (OPM) are based on fundamental equations for gas/particle partitioning, but make the highly simplifying, anonymized-view (AV) assumptions that OPM levels are not affected by either: a) the molecular. characteristics of the condensing organic compounds (other than simple volatility); or b) co-condensation of water as driven by non-zero relative humidity (RH) values. The simplifying assumptions have allowed parameterized chamber results for formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) (e.g., “two-product” (2p) coefficients) to be incorporated in chemical transport models. However, a return towards a less simplistic (and more computationally …
Contributions Of Mass And Bond Energy Difference And Interface Defects On Thermal Boundary Conductance, Nicholas A. Roberts, Changjin Choi
Contributions Of Mass And Bond Energy Difference And Interface Defects On Thermal Boundary Conductance, Nicholas A. Roberts, Changjin Choi
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
The impact of mass and bond energy difference and interface defects on thermal boundary conductance (TBC) is investigated using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) with the Lennard-Jones (L-J) interatomic potential. Results show that the maximum TBC is achieved when the mass and bond energy of two dissimilar materials are matched, although the effective thermal conductivity is not necessarily a maximum due to the contributions of the thermal conductivity of the constituent materials. Mass and bond energy differences result in a mismatch between phonon dispersions, limiting high frequency phonon transport at the interface. This frequency mismatch is defined by a frequency ratio, …

Integrating Distributed Sources Of Information For Construction Cost Estimating Using Semantic Web And Semantic Web Service Technologies, Mehrdad Niknam, Saeed Karshenas
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
A construction project requires collaboration of several organizations such as owner, designer, contractor, and material supplier organizations. These organizations need to exchange information to enhance their teamwork. Understanding the information received from other organizations requires specialized human resources. Construction cost estimating is one of the processes that requires information from several sources including a building information model (BIM) created by designers, estimating assembly and work item information maintained by contractors, and construction material cost data provided by material suppliers. Currently, it is not easy to integrate the information necessary for cost estimating over the Internet.

Designing Bus Transit Services For Routine Crowd Situations At Large Event Venues, Jianli Du, Shih-Fen Cheng, Hoong Chuin Lau
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We are concerned with the routine crowd management problem after a major event at a known venue. Without properly design complementary transport services, such sudden crowd build-ups will overwhelm the existing infrastructure. In this paper, we introduce a novel flow-rate based model to model the dynamic movement of passengers over the transportation flow network. Based on this basic model, an integer linear programming model is proposed to solve the bus transit problem permanently. We validate our model against a real scenario in Singapore, where a newly constructed mega-stadium hosts various large events regularly. The results show that the proposed approach …

An Investigation Into Partitioning Algorithms For Automatic Heterogeneous Compilers, Antonio M. Leija
An Investigation Into Partitioning Algorithms For Automatic Heterogeneous Compilers, Antonio M. Leija
Master's Theses
Automatic Heterogeneous Compilers allows blended hardware-software solutions to be explored without the cost of a full-fledged design team, but limited research exists on current partitioning algorithms responsible for separating hardware and software. The purpose of this thesis is to implement various partitioning algorithms onto the same automatic heterogeneous compiler platform to create an apples to apples comparison for AHC partitioning algorithms. Both estimated outcomes and actual outcomes for the solutions generated are studied and scored. The platform used to implement the algorithms is Cal Poly’s own Twill compiler, created by Doug Gallatin last year. Twill’s original partitioning algorithm is chosen …
Development Of Cpanel, An Unstructured Panel Code, Using A Modified Tls Velocity Formulation, Christopher R. Satterwhite
Development Of Cpanel, An Unstructured Panel Code, Using A Modified Tls Velocity Formulation, Christopher R. Satterwhite
Master's Theses
The use of panel codes in the aerospace industry dates back many decades. Recent advances in computer capability have allowed them to evolve, both in speed and complexity, to provide very quick solutions to complex flow fields. By only requiring surface discretization, panel codes offer a faster alternative to volume based methods, delivering a solution in minutes, as opposed to hours or days. Despite their utility, the availability of these codes is very limited due to either cost, or rights restrictions.
This work incorporates modern software development practices, such as unit level testing and version control, into the development of …

A Comparative Study Of Polyurethane Nanofibers With Different Patterns And Its Analogous Nanofibers Containing Mwcnts, Javier Macossay-Torres, Faheem A. Sheikh, Hassan Ahmad, Hern Kim, Gary L. Bowlin
School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Chemistry)
Tissue engineering is a multidisciplinary field that has evolved in various dimensions in recent years. One of the main aspects in this field is the proper adjustment and final compatibility of implants at the target site of surgery. For this purpose, it is desired to have the materials fabricated at the nanometer scale, since these dimensions will ultimately accelerate the fixation of implants at the cellular level. In this study, electrospun polyurethane nanofibers and their analogous nanofibers containing MWCNTs are introduced for tissue engineering applications. Since MWCNTs agglomerate to form bundles, a high intensity sonication procedure was used to disperse …

Fast Sequence Component Analysis For Attack Detection In Synchrophasor Networks, Jordan Landford, Rich Meier, Richard Barella, Xinghui Zhao, Robert B. Bass, Scott Wallace
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Modern power systems have begun integrating synchrophasor technologies into part of daily operations. Given the amount of solutions offered and the maturity rate of application development it is not a matter of "if" but a matter of "when" in regards to these technologies becoming ubiquitous in control centers around the world. While the benefits are numerous, the functionality of operator-level applications can easily be nullified by injection of deceptive data signals disguised as genuine measurements. Such deceptive action is a common precursor to nefarious, often malicious activity. A correlation coefficient characterization and machine learning methodology are proposed to detect and …

Optical Science and Engineering ETDs
There is a need in emerging smart lighting concepts for a high-speed sensing capability to enable adaptive lighting (smart spaces) and visible light communication. One approach to address this need is to design and manufacture a novel complementary-metal—oxide—semiconductor (CMOS) compatible, cost-effective detector array and readout circuit (ROIC) that incorporates integrated waveguide detectors and avalanche photodiodes (APDs). This thesis focuses on the APD design and fabrication component of the sensing capability required by smart-lighting systems. Silicon CMOS compatible APDs are expected to provide high-speed and high-sensitivity sensors in terms of simplicity of design, low power consumption and cost-effectiveness for smart-lighting applications. …
Investigating The Correlation Between Freeway Service Levels And Freeway Service Patrol Assists, Nora Chin
Investigating The Correlation Between Freeway Service Levels And Freeway Service Patrol Assists, Nora Chin
Master's Theses
The Bay Area Metropolitan Transportation Commission’s (MTC) Freeway Service Patrol’s highway motorist response service is reporting a reduction in their service levels. We analyze the relationship between the reduction in the Bay Area Freeway Service Patrol’s (FSP) motorist assists and changes in vehicle miles traveled (VMT), California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported incidents, and cover research on the impact of new and old vehicle fleet turnover. VMT and CHP incidents have differential effects on FSP assists. Although incidents occurring on freeways with high traffic flows tend to cause more congestion, the trend in local VMT along Bay Area freeway corridors does …

Error Probabilities For Optical Receivers That Employ Dynamically Biased Avalanche Photodiodes, Georges El-Howayek, Majeed M. Hayat
Error Probabilities For Optical Receivers That Employ Dynamically Biased Avalanche Photodiodes, Georges El-Howayek, Majeed M. Hayat
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
A novel theory was recently reported for the avalanche multiplication process in avalanche photodiodes (APDs) under dynamic reverse-biasing conditions. It has been shown theoretically that the bit-synchronized, periodic modulation of the electric field in the multiplication region can offer improvements in the gain-bandwidth product by reducing intersymbol interference in optical receivers. This paper reports a rigorous formulation of the sensitivity of optical receivers that employ dynamically biased APDs. To enable the sensitivity analysis, a recurrence theory is developed to calculate the joint probability distribution function (PDF) of the stochastic gain and avalanche buildup time in APDs that are operated under …

Perceived Adequacy Of Illumination, Spatial Brightness, Horizontal Illuminance And Mean Room Surface Exitance In A Small Office, James Duff, Kevin Kelly, Christopher Cuttle
Articles
This paper presents a pilot study that investigated the suitability of mean room surface exitance as a predictor of spatial brightness and perceived adequacy of illumination, and then compared these results with how horizontal illuminance predicted both items under the same conditions. The experiment included 26 participants. A small office was used for the study. It exposed participants to three levels of mean room surface exitance, each delivered with three different light distributions and across three different surface reflectances, resulting in a total of 27 light scenes. A clear relationship existed between mean room surface exitance and both perceived adequacy …

Construction Degree Graduates: An Evaluation Of Depth Of Skill Understanding And Skill Priority By Construction Industry Professionals, Ben F. Bigelow, Edelmiro Escamilla, Lauren Kuecker
The Professional Constructor
Previous studies have been conducted to determine the skills the construction industry expects graduates and entry level professionals to possess. The majority of those studies report soft skills and technical expertise as the main qualities graduates should have upon entering the industry. Many differing skills have been reported, but neither the expected depth of understanding in those skills nor the industry’s priority of those skills have been explored. To do so, a survey was administered to members of the Construction Industry Advisory Council at Texas A&M University asking these questions. Depth of understanding was evaluated on a four level basis …

Security is a critical concern around the world. In many domains from cybersecurity to sustainability, limited security resources prevent complete security coverage at all times. Instead, these limited resources must be scheduled (or allocated or deployed), while simultaneously taking into account the importance of different targets, the responses of the adversaries to the security posture, and the potential uncertainties in adversary payoffs and observations, etc. Computational game theory can help generate such security schedules. Indeed, casting the problem as a Stackelberg game, we have developed new algorithms that are now deployed over multiple years in multiple applications for scheduling of …

Emerging continuous sensing apps introduce new major factors governing phones’ overall battery consumption behaviors: (1) added nontrivial persistent battery drain, and more importantly (2) different battery drain rate depending on the user’s different mobility condition. In this paper, we address the new battery impacting factors significant enough to outdate users’ existing battery model in real life. We explore an initial approach to help users understand the cause and effect between their physical activity and phones’ battery life. To this end, we present Sandra, a novel mobility-aware smartphone battery information advisor, and study its potential to help users redevelop their battery …
A Rolling Horizon Auction Mechanism And Virtual Pricing Of Shipping Capacity For Urban Consolidation Centers, Chen Wang, Hoong Chuin Lau, Yun Fong Lim
A Rolling Horizon Auction Mechanism And Virtual Pricing Of Shipping Capacity For Urban Consolidation Centers, Chen Wang, Hoong Chuin Lau, Yun Fong Lim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
A number of cities around the world have adopted urban consolidation centers (UCCs) to address challenges of last-mile deliveries. At the UCC, goods are consolidated based on their destinations prior to their deliveries into city centers. Typically, a UCC owns a fleet of ecofriendly vehicles to carry out such deliveries. Shippers/carriers that make use of the UCC’s service hence no longer need to be restricted by timewindow and vehicle-type regulations. As a result, they retain the ability to deploy large trucks for the economies of scale from the source to the UCC which is located outside the city center. Furthermore, …

Work Vehicle Warning Lights: Color Options And Effectiveness, Brian K. Howell, Jerry G. Pigman, Kenneth R. Agent
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
KTC reviewed existing regulations, guidance, and practices to assess the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s warning lights program on highway work vehicles. The Kentucky Revised Statutes categorizes KYTC vehicles as “public safety vehicles” and requires their use of amber lights. Because the use of red can be confused with emergency vehicles, KYTC prohibits the use of red on work vehicles. At the national level, standards for warning light colors do not exist. Rather, AASHTO provides guidance on roadway operations equipment and recommends the use of amber and white lights as the primary warning light colors for highway vehicles. AASHTO guidance also prescribes …
