Multiple Point Constraint (Mpc)-Based Variable Node Super-Element, Mohamad Eftekharjoo
Multiple Point Constraint (Mpc)-Based Variable Node Super-Element, Mohamad Eftekharjoo
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The multiple point constraint (MPC)-based variable node element is introduced in this study to handle mismatched meshes between sub-domains in finite element analysis. The MPC-variable node element is a collection of a group of elements. The compatibility condition along the interface boundary is imposed along the edge of these elements through Lagrange multipliers. The Elimination method is then used to remove the effects of the dependent nodes in these elements to produce a single MPC-based variable node element. The derived variable node elements are applied to solve two plane strain problems in order to validate the accuracy of the proposed …
Enhanced Series-Parallel Model For Estimating The Time-Dependent Thermal Conductivity Of Fly Ash Soil Mixtures, Xin Kang, Louis Ge
Enhanced Series-Parallel Model For Estimating The Time-Dependent Thermal Conductivity Of Fly Ash Soil Mixtures, Xin Kang, Louis Ge
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
An enhanced series-parallel (S-II) model of one-dimensional conductive heat flow through a unit cell was developed to estimate the time-dependent thermal conductivity of Class C fly ash stabilized soils. The unit cell is composed of three separate heat flow paths: a continuous path through solid contacts (soil contacts, fly ash contacts, and soil fly ash contacts) in parallel arrangement, a series-parallel path of solids in a series arrangement with a parallel arranged path of solid-miniscule pores (miniscule portion of solid water and miniscule portion of solid air), and a continuous path through water and air in parallel arrangement. The solid-miniscule …

Gasification Of Coal And Heat Integration Modification For Igcc - Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle, Dalia A. Ali Eng, Mamdouh A. Gadalla Prof., Fatma H. Ashour Prof.
Chemical Engineering
Use of energy is closely related to the development of an economy. The most useful form of energy in the modern world is electricity. IGCC has higher fuel flexibility (biomass, refinery residues, petroleum coke, etc.) and generates multiple products (electricity, hydrogen and chemicals like methanol and higher alcohols) and by-products - sulphur, sulphuric acid, slag, etc. IGCC plants include coal preparation unit, air separation unit (ASU) to separate oxygen from air to use it in the gasification process, gasification unit where an incomplete combustion for coal is made to produce Syngas, cleaning unit to remove acid gases and CO2 from …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
During his illustrious lifetime, Rabindranath Tagore travelled extensively around the world, spreading inspiration and gaining veneration in most destinations as the emissary of the East and of a deeply futuristic Universalist philosophy. An assessment of the intellectuals and cultural icons of the world whom Tagore encountered, interacted with, and influenced, is both astonishing and indeed still waiting to be adequately evaluated. His exchanges with Einstein, Wells, Rolland, Gide, Freud, Durant, Yeats, Rothenstein, Andrews, Noguchi, Gandhi, Radhakrishnan, Nehru, Bose and numerous others are well-documented. Tagore's literary works and public life centered on rejoicing in and celebrating everything unique and artistic in …

A transfer function formalism is applied to track propagation of modulated chaos waves through modified von Karman phase turbulence; the demodulated signal is examined vis-à-vis performance relative to turbulence strength in comparison with non-chaotic propagation.
Creation Of Identical Multiple Focal Spots With Prescribed Axial Distribution, Yanzhong Yu, Qiwen Zhan
Creation Of Identical Multiple Focal Spots With Prescribed Axial Distribution, Yanzhong Yu, Qiwen Zhan
Electro-Optics and Photonics Faculty Publications
We present a scheme for the construction of coaxially equidistant multiple focal spots with identical intensity profiles for each individual focus and a predetermined number and spacing. To achieve this, the radiation field from an antenna is reversed and then gathered by high numerical aperture objective lenses. Radiation patterns from three types of line sources, i.e., the electric current, magnetic current and electromagnetic current distributions, with cosine-squared taper are respectively employed to generate predominately longitudinally polarized bright spots, azimuthally polarized doughnuts, and focal spots with a perfect spherically symmetric intensity distribution. The required illuminations at the pupil plane of a …
Using Star-Ccm+ To Evaluate Multi-User Collaboration In Cfd, Kasey Johnson Webster
Using Star-Ccm+ To Evaluate Multi-User Collaboration In Cfd, Kasey Johnson Webster
Theses and Dissertations
The client-server architecture of STAR-CCM+ allows multiple users to collaborate on a simulation set-up. The effectiveness of collaboration with this architecture is tested and evaluated on five models. The testing of these models is a start to finish set-up of an entire simulation excluding computational time for generating mesh and solving the solution. The different models have distinct differences which test every operation that would be used in a general CFD simulation. These tests focus on reducing the time spent preparing the geometry to be meshed, including setting up for a conformal mesh between multiple regions in conjugate heat transfer …

Is This "Transfer Shock"? Examining The Perceptions Of Engineering Students Who Articulate Within The Irish Higher Education Context., Susan O'Shaughnessy, Anne Marie Mccarrick, Fionnuala Farrell, Una Beagon, Lance C. Perez
Conference papers
Abstract—“Transfer shock” is a well-known phenomenon during the process of articulation, when students move from short-cycle applied programs to more academic longer-cycle study programs. In the US context this problematic transition has been observed in students transferring from community colleges into the traditional university system. In Ireland’s binary higher education structure, one set of institutions, known as Institutes of Technology (IoTs) allow for this transition to take place entirely within individual institutions. This paper is part of an ongoing investigation into one such IoT, where engineering students who achieve high grades at the end of 3-year (so-called Level 7) “ordinary …

Identifying Significant Environmental Features Using Feature Recognition, Megan White, Junfeng Zhu, Benjamin L. Blandford, Ted H. Grossardt
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
The Department of Environmental Analysis at the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has expressed an interest in feature-recognition capability because it may help analysts identify environmentally sensitive features in the landscape, including those relating to historic preservation, archaeology, endangered species habitat, and geology. LIDAR Analyst and Feature Analyst are a pair of geoprocessing software packages that have been developed by Textron Systems. Using this software, users can use LIDAR data to identify finely-scaled user-specified features. The software’s automated feature extraction saves time that might otherwise be spent manually analyzing images and digitizing features.
This report explores the capabilities and accuracy of this …
Dynamic Triaxial Compression Experiments On Borosilicate And Soda-Lime Glass, John T. Chojnacki
Dynamic Triaxial Compression Experiments On Borosilicate And Soda-Lime Glass, John T. Chojnacki
Open Access Theses
A series of compression experiments were performed on borosilicate and soda-lime glass using a triaxial compression Kolsky bar. The triaxial compression Kolsky bar differs from a traditional Kolsky bar by having two pressure chambers, one enclosing the specimen and the other enclosing the end of the transmission bar, so that a specimen may be pre-stressed axially and radially before a dynamic axial load is applied. The result is a modified Kolsky bar capable of measuring axial deformation and axial stresses of a specimen at various strain rates under a range of confinement pressures. Borosilicate glass was subjected to triaxial confinement …

The objective of this project is to create a machine that has the capability to pour Petri dishes. The usage of this machine must be easier than simply performing the task by hand, be automated, capable of producing 120 plates per hour, be sterile, prevent the plates from sloshing, fit in a fume hood, and stack the plates while they are cooling so that they may cool properly. This all was accomplished with a device that drops the plates vertically down, fills them, and then lowers them into storage thanks to their now increased mass and a spring-loaded platform.

The 2015 ASME Challenge was to construct a device which manufactures a projectile from a piece of copy paper then launches it as far as possible. At the competition, each team has five minutes to assemble their machine, craft three projectiles and fire them for a cumulative distance. In addition to launching paper projectiles as far as possible, the machines must also be designed to take up as little space as possible while still performing its main function effectively. A team’s final score is the ratio of the cumulative distance of all three projectiles to the volume of a box …

The goal of this project was to build a cost-effective automated system that can handle the process of pouring agar into plates, but is also easily sterilized and operates with no supervision. This agar plate-pouring machine is intended to increase productivity in small-scale biology and research labs by pouring at least 120 plates per hour while keeping the agar sterile and preventing contamination. This was accomplished with a multi-valve system controlled by an Arduino board which could also fit inside of a fume hood.

The main objective of this senior design project is to design and build a capability that allows different attachments (i.e. camera, flashlight, speakers, hook) to be attached and detached electromechanically from a drone. The main challenge in this project was our cost constraints. Weight is one of the most important constraints in aerial vehicles, and with a small budget, it was very challenging to find a powerful drone and manufacture light and durable parts. The modular system involved two general components: a drone retrofit and the attachments. The drone needed to be retrofitted to house additional electronics (i.e. Arduino, remote …

The cure kinetics of an epoxy resin based on the tetrafunctional epoxy precursor N,N′-tetraglycidyl methylene dianiline-(TGMDA) hardened with 4,4-diaminodiphenyl sulfone is investigated. The influence of carbon nanofillers (carbon nanotubes, carbon nanofibers, and graphene based nanoparticles) on the cure kinetic is studied. Kinetic analysis is performed by dynamic and isothermal differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).
In dynamic experiments, the activation energy was computed using an advanced isoconversional method while under isothermal conditions, the Kamal’s model of diffusion control was applied to simulate the systems throughout the curing process. The isothermal analysis shows that the introduction of the diluent decreases, …

Modeling Of Magnetized Graphene From Microwave To Thz Range By Dgtd With A Scalar Rbc And An Ade, Ping Li, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper presents a discontinuous Galerkin timedomain (DGTD) method for the transient analysis of magnetized graphene from the microwave to terahertz (THz) frequencies. By considering the atom thick graphene layer as an infinitely thin conductive sheet with finite surface conductivity, a frequency-dependent anisotropic resistive boundary condition (RBC) is obtained. Based on this RBC, the direct volumetric discretization of graphene layer is avoided. Instead of directly deriving the numerical flux for DGTD considering the presence of this anisotropic and dispersive RBC, an auxiliary surface polarization current governed by a first-order time-dependent partial differential equation (PDE) is introduced over the graphene with …
