Mixed Surfactant Systems: Thermodynamics And Applications In Metal Oxide Imprinting, Suvid Joshi
Mixed Surfactant Systems: Thermodynamics And Applications In Metal Oxide Imprinting, Suvid Joshi
Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering
In this work we study mixtures of cationic surfactant (CTAB) and sugar based surfactant(s) (octyl beta-D-glucopyranoside (C8G1), dodecyl maltoside (C12G2) and octyl beta-D-xylopyranoside (C8X1)) to understand the non-ideal thermodynamic behavior of the mixtures of cationic and non-ionic surfactants in water and synthesis of imprinted materials. The thermodynamics of micellization, mixing and dilution of these systems are studied using Isothermal Titration Calorimetry (ITC) and the experimental data obtained are modeled with a pseudo-phase separation model with non-ideal mixing described by regular solution theory. It is shown that a model accounting for enthalpy of demicellization and enthalpy of dilution based on McMillan-Mayer …
Injection-Locked Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (Vcsels) For Optical Arbitrary Waveform Generation, Sharad Bhooplapur
Injection-Locked Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (Vcsels) For Optical Arbitrary Waveform Generation, Sharad Bhooplapur
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Complex optical pulse shapes are typically generated from ultrashort laser pulses by manipulating the optical spectrum of the input pulses. This generates complex but periodic time-domain waveforms. Optical Arbitrary Waveform Generation (OAWG) builds on the techniques of ultrashort pulse-shaping, with the goal of making non-periodic, truly arbitrary optical waveforms. Some applications of OAWG are coherently controlling chemical reactions on a femtosecond time scale, improving the performance of LADAR systems, high-capacity optical telecommunications and ultra wideband signals processing. In this work, an array of Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) are used as modulators, by injection-locking each VCSEL to an individual …

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
The behavior of three antibiotics (bacitracin, chlortetracycline, and tylosin) and two classes of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), tet and erm, were monitored in swine manure slurry under anaerobic conditions. First-order decay rates were determined for each antibiotic with half-lives ranging from1 day (chlortetracycline) to 10 days (tylosin). ARGs were monitored in the swine manure slurry, and losses of approximately 1 to 3 orders of magnitude in relative abundance were observed during the 40 day storage period. First-order degradation profiles were observed for chlortetracycline and its corresponding resistance genes, tet(X) and tet(Q). Tylosin was degraded to approximately 10% …
Nanoparticles For Multimodal In Vivo Imaging In Nanomedicine, Jaehong Key, James F. Leary
Nanoparticles For Multimodal In Vivo Imaging In Nanomedicine, Jaehong Key, James F. Leary
Birck and NCN Publications
While nanoparticles are usually designed for targeted drug delivery, they can also simultaneously provide diagnostic information by a variety of in vivo imaging methods. These diagnostic capabilities make use of specific properties of nanoparticle core materials. Near-infrared fluorescent probes provide optical detection of cells targeted by real-time nanoparticle-distribution studies within the organ compartments of live, anesthetized animals. By combining different imaging modalities, we can start with deep-body imaging by magnetic resonance imaging or computed tomography, and by using optical imaging, get down to the resolution required for real-time fluorescence-guided surgery.

Non-Faradaic Impedance Characterization Of An Evaporating Droplet For Microfluidic And Biosensing Applications, Piyush Dak, Aida Ebrahimi, Muhammad A. Alam
Birck and NCN Publications
We have developed a general numerical/analytical theory of non-faradaic impedance of an evaporating droplet, and validated the model by experiments involving droplets of various analyte concentrations deposited on a surface defined by coplanar electrodes. The impedance of the droplet Z(n(0),t,f) is analyzed as a function of the concentration (n(0)) of the ions in the solution, the measurement frequency (f) and the evaporation time (t). We illustrate the versatility of the model by determining the sensitivity enhancement alpha(t) of the droplet-based impedimetric nano-biosensor under different regimes of operation. The model should have broad applications in the characterization/optimization of droplet-based systems, especially …

Prediction Of Spectral Phonon Mean Free Path And Thermal Conductivity With Applications To Thermoelectrics And Thermal Management: A Review, Tianli Feng, Xiulin Ruan
Birck and NCN Publications
We give a review of the theoretical approaches for predicting spectral phonon mean free path and thermal conductivity of solids. The methods can be summarized into two categories: anharmonic lattice dynamics calculation and molecular dynamics simulation. In the anharmonic lattice dynamics calculation, the anharmonic force constants are used first to calculate the phonon scattering rates, and then the Boltzmann transport equations are solved using either standard single mode relaxation time approximation or the Iterative Scheme method for the thermal conductivity. The MD method involves the time domain or frequency domain normal mode analysis. We present the theoretical frameworks of the …

Because privacy today is a major concern for mobile applications, network anonymizers are widely available on smartphones, such as Android. However despite the use of such anonymizers, in many cases applications are still able to identify the user and the device by different means than the IP address. The reason is that very often applications require device services and information that go beyond the capabilities of anonymous networks in protecting users’ identity and privacy. In this paper, we propose two solutions that address this problem. The first solution is based on an approach that shadows user and application data, device …

The Effect On Stockholder’S Wealth On Critical Systems Failure And Remedy: The Boeing 787 Case, Jayendra Gokhale, Sunder Raghavan, Victor J. Tremblay
Accounting, Economics, Finance, and Information Sciences - Daytona Beach
In this paper we analyze the effect of Boeing Dreamliner 787’s battery problems on stockholder wealth. Using the event study methodology, we show that the recall in January of 2013 initially caused the company’s cumulative abnormal returns to fall by almost 4% in four trading days after the recall. This was followed by an announcement by two major airlines to ground all of the 787 Dreamliner jets. The FAA also ordered all US airlines to ground their 787s and announced an investigation to review all critical systems of 787s. However within four months of the investigation, FAA approved Boeing’s revisions …
A Study Of Forensic Imaging In The Absence Of Write-Blockers, Gary C. Kessler, Gregory H. Carlton
A Study Of Forensic Imaging In The Absence Of Write-Blockers, Gary C. Kessler, Gregory H. Carlton
Security Studies & International Affairs - Daytona Beach
"Best practices in digital forensics demand the use of write-blockers when creating forensic images of digital media, and this has been a core tenet of computer forensics training for decades. The practice is so ingrained that the integrity of images created without a write-blocker are immediately suspect. This paper describes a research framework that compares forensic images acquired with and without utilizing write-blockers in order to understand the extent of the differences, if any, in the resultant forensic copies. We specifically address whether differences are superficial or evidentiary, and we discuss the impact of admitting evidence acquired without write blocking. …

The issues associated with Ireland’s over reliance on fossil fuels to meet energy demands have sparked an interest in renewable energy. Renewable energy resources typically are intermittent and vary significantly in energy intensity. Tidal energy however has the advantage of predictability over large time scales and high power densities. A study of Ireland's tidal-current-energy resource has identified several viable sites. As part of this resource assessment, Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers were installed at two locations along Ireland's west coast, at a site in the Bulls Mouth and the Shannon Estuary. The Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers measured tidal current speed and …

Rationale: Poor adherence to inhaler use can be due to poor temporal and/or technique adherence. Up until now there has been no way of reliably tracking both these factors in everyday inhaler use. Objectives: This paper introduces a device developed to create time stamped acoustic recordings of an individual’s inhaler use, in which empirical evidence of temporal and technique adherence in inhaler use can be monitored over time. The correlation between clinical outcomes and adherence, as determined by this device, was compared for temporal adherence alone and combined temporal and technique adherence. Findings: The technology was validated by showing that …

Experimental And Modelling Evaluation Of Slagging Behaviour Of German Lignite, Martin Kaiser, Alexander Ilyushechkin
Coal Combustion and Gasification Products Journal Archive
The behaviour of mineral matter is important for the characterisation of coal for use in entrained-flow gasification technologies. We investigated four behavioural characteristics—ash fusion temperatures (AFT), slag viscosity versus temperature profiles, temperatures of critical viscosity (TCV), and slag phase compositions—of Rhenish lignite coal ash using laboratory and modelling tools. Our modelling of AFT using coal ash composition provided a wide range of data, with only one (modified) model demonstrating agreement with experimental data. Experimental slag viscosity data were obtained over a temperature range from 1200uC to 1500uC. Where relevant, TCV was also measured. Comparison of these data to the calculated …

Comparative Analysis Of Gps Data, Kiel Von Lindenberg
Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two
The goal of this project is to calculate the distance traveled during a bike ride around the University of South Florida using information gathered by a GPS (Global Positioning System) application on a smartphone. We calculate the route distance in two ways: from latitudes and longitudes using the haversine formula and 2) from velocities and times using the trapezoidal rule. These computed distances were compared to the distance given by the smartphone application.
Voltage Smoothing With A Capacitor, Martin Copello
Voltage Smoothing With A Capacitor, Martin Copello
Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two
A rectifier is an electrical circuit that converts alternating current to direct current, e.g., a half wave rectifier removes lower valleys of the AC voltage wave. If a capacitor is placed in parallel with a half wave rectifier, the transition from voltage peak to peak is smoothed to closer resemble constant DC voltage. The objective of this project was to model the voltage changes of a half wave rectifier with a parallel capacitor. It was found that the smoothness of the voltage waves increased as the capacitance of the capacitor increased.

Rocket Flight Path, Jamie Waters
Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two
This project uses Newton’s Second Law of Motion, Euler’s method, basic physics, and basic calculus to model the flight path of a rocket. From this, one can find the height and velocity at any point from launch to the maximum altitude, or apogee. This can then be compared to the actual values to see if the method of estimation is a plausible. The rocket used for this project is modeled after Bullistic-1 which was launched by the Society of Aeronautics and Rocketry at the University of South Florida.

Neuroimaging studies of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)-related memory impairments have consistently implicated abnormal activities in the frontal and parietal lobes. However, most studies have used block designs and could not dissociate the multiple phases of working memory. In this study, the involvement of the prefrontal cortex in working memory phases was assessed among veterans with PTSD and age-/ gender-matched healthy controls. Multichannel functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) was utilized to measure prefrontal cortex hemodynamic activations during memory of neutral (i.e., not trauma-related) forward and backward digit span tasks. An event-related experimental design was utilized to dissociate the different phases (i.e., …

Modeling The Capillary Discharge Of An Electrothermal (Et) Launcher, Travis Least
Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive
Over the past few decades, different branches of the US Department of Defense (DoD) have invested at improving the field ability of electromagnetic launchers. One such focus has been on achieving hypervelocity launch velocities in excess of 7 km/s for direct launch to space applications [1]. It has been shown that pre-injection is required for this to be achieved. One method of pre-injection which has promise involves using an electro-thermal (ET) due to its ability to achieve the desired velocities with a minimal amount of hot plasma injected into the launcher behind the projectile. Despite the demonstration of pre-injection using …

Dynamic programming (DP) is an optimization approach that transforms a complex problem into a sequence of simpler sub-problems at different points in stage. The original DP approach used Bellman's equation to compute the "cost-to-go' function. This method is useful when considering a few states and decisions. However, when dealing with high-dimensional data set with continuous state space, the limit called 'curse of dimensionality' obstructs the solution as the size of the state space grows exponentially. Given recent advances in computational power, approximate dynamic programming (ADP) is introduced by not seeking to compute the future value function exactly and at each …

Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data has been getting a lot of attention these days because of its applicability in various fields - city planning, disaster response & precaution, soil conservation, infrastructure or forestry. Raw LiDAR data is not directly usable in the above-mentioned applications. Therefore, an important aspect of the aerial LIDAR system is to process raw LiDAR data accurately. The processed data is then made available to us in the form of point clouds or digital elevation maps (DEM's) or digital surface maps (DSM's). Each swath of raw data represents a single flight path over a region of …

This dissertation addresses photonic devices enabled by the guided-mode resonance (GMR) effect. As periodic phototonic structures can become highly reflective or transmissive at resonance, this effect has been utilized to design suites of optical elements including reflection filters, transmission filters, broadband mirrors, polarizers, and absorbers with a plethora of possible deployment venues. Even though there has been considerable research on the reflection type GMR elements, attendant transmission filters have less explored experimentally, as there is material limitation to design this kind of filters with simple architecture and they also may require coupling to multiple resonances simultaneously. Apart from the design …

The experiments or simulations conducted by computers can be a tedious task, requiring substantial computational time. To find a global solution using a computerexperiments process, we usually need to perform many function evaluations of thecomputer model. This research focuses on developing an optimization method to find aglobally optimal solution efficiently using surrogates. The surrogates represent thecomputer model or the system that reads the inputs and generates the output responsesof interest, so that these surrogate models can be used in place of time-consumingsimulations runs. In surrogate based optimization, we iteratively build a surrogate model(a.k.a, approximate model or a metamodel) and conduct an …
