Passive And Electronically Steered Array Planar Feeds For Satellite Communications, Kyle C. Browning Mar 2014

Passive And Electronically Steered Array Planar Feeds For Satellite Communications, Kyle C. Browning

Theses and Dissertations

As the need for more bandwidth increases, satellite communication (SatCom) terminals are forced to climb higher in frequency. Higher frequency means greater propagation losses, and so antenna gain and sensitivity have to increase. The higher the gain, the more difficult it is to point the antenna. To make matters even more challenging, consumers are requesting satellite links in harsher environments and on moving vehicle and planes. In order to meet today's challenges and improve on dish feeds, research is ongoing to replace fixed-beam feedhorns with smaller, cheaper, and lighter PCB based antennas and to develop low-cost electronically steered array feeds …

Application Improvements Of Slab-Coupled Optical Fiber Sensors, Spencer L. Chadderdon Mar 2014

Application Improvements Of Slab-Coupled Optical Fiber Sensors, Spencer L. Chadderdon

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores techniques for improving slab-coupled optical fiber sensor (SCOS) technology for use in specific applications and sensing configurations. SCOS are advantageous for their small size and all-dielectric composition which permit non-intrusive measurement of electric fields within compact environments; however, their small size also limits their sensitivity. This work performs a thorough analysis of the factors contributing to the performance of SCOS and demonstrates methods which improve SCOS, while maintaining its small dimensions and high level of directional sensitivity. These improvements include increasing the sensitivity by 9x, improving the frequency response to include sub 300 kHz frequencies, and developing …

Electrical And Thermal Conductivities Of Reduced Graphene Oxide/Polystyrene Composites, Wonjung Park, Jiuning Hu, Luis A. Jauregui, Xiulin Ruan, Yong P. Chen

Birck and NCN Publications

The author reports an experimental study of electrical and thermal transport in reduced graphene oxide (RGO)/polystyrene (PS) composites. The electrical conductivity (sigma) of RGO/PS composites with different RGO concentrations at room temperature shows a percolation behavior with the percolation threshold of similar to 0.25 vol. %. Their temperature-dependent electrical conductivity follows Efros-Shklovskii variable range hopping conduction in the temperature range of 30-300K. The thermal conductivity (kappa) of composites is enhanced by similar to 90% as the concentration is increased from 0 to 10 vol. %. The thermal conductivity of composites approximately linearly increases with increasing temperature from 150 to 300 …

Combined Metal-Enhanced Fluorescence-Surface Acoustic Wave (Mef-Saw) Biosensor, Samuel Morrill Mar 2014

Combined Metal-Enhanced Fluorescence-Surface Acoustic Wave (Mef-Saw) Biosensor, Samuel Morrill

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Immunofluorescence assays are capable of both detecting the amount of a protein and the location of the protein within a cell or tissue section. Unfortunately, the traditional technique is not capable of detecting concentrations on the nanoscale. Also, the technique suffers from non-specific attachment, which can cause false-positives, as well as photobleaching when detecting lower concentrations is attempted. There is also a time constraint problem since the technique can take from many hours to a few days in some cases.

In this work, metal-enhanced fluorescence (MEF) is used to lower the detection limit and reduce photobleaching. Unfortunately, MEF also increases …

Investigation Of Tio2 And Invo4-Tio2 Semiconductors For The Photocatalytic Degradation Of Aqueous Organics, Sandra L. Pettit Mar 2014

Investigation Of Tio2 And Invo4-Tio2 Semiconductors For The Photocatalytic Degradation Of Aqueous Organics, Sandra L. Pettit

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Water is a vital natural resource. To develop more sustainable water systems, we must focus efforts on the removal of persistent contaminants. Aqueous organic contaminants include azo dyes, halogenated organics (e.g. pesticides), and algal and bacterial metabolites. The latter are common to surface waters and freshwater aquaculture systems and can cause taste and odor problems. Two of the principal organoleptic compounds are geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol (MIB). Traditional oxidation treatment methods, utilizing chlorine, hydrogen peroxide, and potassium permanganate, have been employed with varying levels of efficacy for removal of these and other organic contaminants. Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) have greater potential …

Improving The Treatment Of Non-Aqueous Phase Tce In Low Permeability Zones With Permanganate, Chanat Chokejaroenrat, Steve D. Comfort, Chainarong Sakulthaew, Bruce I. Dvoark

Nebraska Water Center: Faculty Publications

Treating dense non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs) embedded in low permeability zones (LPZs) is aparticularly challenging issue for injection-based remedial treatments. Our objective was to improve thesweeping efficiency of permanganate (MnO4−) into LPZs to treat high concentrations of TCE. This wasaccomplished by conducting transport experiments that quantified the penetration of various perman-ganate flooding solutions into a LPZ that was spiked with non-aqueous phase14C-TCE. The treatments weevaluated included permanganate paired with: (i) a shear-thinning polymer (xanthan); (ii) stabilizationaids that minimized MnO2rind formation and (iii) a phase-transfer catalyst. In addition, we quantifiedthe ability of these flooding solutions to improve TCE destruction under batch …

Modulation And Synchronization For Aeronautical Telemetry, Christopher G. Shaw Mar 2014

Modulation And Synchronization For Aeronautical Telemetry, Christopher G. Shaw

Theses and Dissertations

Aeronautical telemetry systems have historically been implemented with constant envelope modulations like CPM. Shifts in system constraints including reduced available bandwidth and increased throughput demands have caused many in the field to reevaluate traditional methods and design practices. This work examines the costs and benefits of using APSK for aeronautical telemetry instead of CPM. Variable rate turbo codes are used to improve the power efficiency of 16- and 32-APSK. Spectral regrowth in nonlinear power amplifiers when driven by non-constant envelope modulation is also considered. Simulation results show the improved spectral efficiency of this modulation scheme over those currently defined in …

Bayesian Methods And Confidence Intervals For Automatic Target Recognition Of Sar Canonical Shapes, Richard W. Rademacher Mar 2014

Bayesian Methods And Confidence Intervals For Automatic Target Recognition Of Sar Canonical Shapes, Richard W. Rademacher

Theses and Dissertations

This research develops a new Bayesian technique for the detection of scattering primitives in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) phase history data received from a sensor platform. The primary goal of this research is the estimation of size, position, and orientation parameters defined by the “canonical” shape primitives of Jackson. Previous Bayesian methods for this problem have focused on the traditional maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimate based on the posterior density. A new concept, the probability mass interval, is developed. In this technique the posterior density is partitioned into intervals, which are then integrated to form a probability mass over that …

In response to these challenges, Portland State University redesigned its BSEE and MSECE power engineering programs in order to create a launching pad for successful power engineering careers. A course series on power system …

Removing Parallax-Induced False Changes In Change Detection, Karmon M. Vongsy Mar 2014

Removing Parallax-Induced False Changes In Change Detection, Karmon M. Vongsy

Theses and Dissertations

Accurate change detection (CD) results in urban environments is of interest to a diverse set of applications including military surveillance, environmental monitoring, and urban development. This work presents a hyperspectral CD (HSCD) framework. The framework uncovers the need for HSCD methods that resolve false change caused by image parallax. A Generalized Likelihood Ratio Test (GLRT) statistic for HSCD is developed that accommodates unknown mis-registration between imagery described by a prior probability density function for the spatial mis-registration. The potential of the derived method to incorporate more complex signal proccessing functions is demonstrated by the incorporation of a parallax error mitigation …

Hydrothermal Crystal Growth Of Lithium Tetraborate And Lithium -Metaborate, Jeffrey J. Graham Mar 2014

Hydrothermal Crystal Growth Of Lithium Tetraborate And Lithium -Metaborate, Jeffrey J. Graham

Theses and Dissertations

Growth of lithium tetraborate by the hydrothermal method was attempted in 10-6 M LiOH, both by spontaneous nucleation and transport growth. Tetraborate grew out of the first spontaneous nucleation reaction, while the seed dissolved and lithium gamma-metaborate formed during the transport growth reactions. A species thermodynamic stability study showed gamma-metaborate formed exclusively from 350°C to 550°C, and Li3B5O8(OH)2 was observed at 250°C; tetraborate was not observed. A solubility study on lithium tetraborate did not achieve equilibrium conditions, but did demonstrate that gamma-metaborate is significantly more thermodynamically stable than tetraborate under the tested …

Enhanced Vehicle Beddown Approximations For The Improved Theater Distribution Model, Jonathan D. White

Theses and Dissertations

Gathering insight into the theater distribution process can be a complex task, especially when estimating potential beddown solutions. Coming up with a low cost feasible mixture of cargo vehicles that will support distribution of military personnel and goods within theater is currently a high priority for force flow analysts at USTRANSCOM. In the past, analysts used a trial and error simulation process that was iterative and time consuming. Recent research has produced the Improved Theater Distribution Model (ITDM), which presents a less time consuming, more precise method to estimate beddown allocations. Improving on this research, two linear programming methods were …

Ultraviolet Light Emitting Diode Use In Advanced Oxidation Processes, Kelsey L. Duckworth Mar 2014

Ultraviolet Light Emitting Diode Use In Advanced Oxidation Processes, Kelsey L. Duckworth

Theses and Dissertations

Cleanup from a hazardous chemical release can result in large volumes of water containing hazardous materials, such as organophosphates. Unfortunately, this water cannot be treated in a municipal wastewater treatment plant without adversely affecting the performance of the plant. A known method for pretreating this water to prepare it for processing in a traditional treatment plant includes the addition of hydrogen peroxide, followed by ultraviolet (UV) light exposure to form reactive hydroxyl radicals which oxidize the chemical. Light emitting diodes (LEDs) are explored as a UV source as they are durable; compact; can be powered by low voltage, direct current …

Creep behavior in interlaminar shear of an oxide-oxide ceramic composite, Nextel 720™/aluminosilicate (N720/AS), was investigated at 1100°C in laboratory air and in steam. The interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) was determined as 7.65 MPa. The creep behavior was examined for interlaminar shear stresses in the 2-6 MPa range. Primary and secondary creep regimes were observed in all tests conducted in air and in steam. Tertiary creep was noted in the tests performed at 6 MPa. Larger creep strains and higher creep strain rates were produced in steam. Surprisingly, the presence of steam had a beneficial effect on creep lifetimes. It appears …

Operational Characteristics Of An Ultra Compact Combustor, Christopher J. Damele Mar 2014

Operational Characteristics Of An Ultra Compact Combustor, Christopher J. Damele

Theses and Dissertations

Ultra Compact Combustors offer unique solutions to minimize engine size and weight. They accomplish this by reducing the number of components in the engine core and perform the combustion in a circumferential cavity that encircles the core flow. Within this cavity, the fuel is injected rich. Burning continues to occur in the vane passage beneath the circumferential cavity which must be completed in a controlled manner prior to the inlet plane of the turbine rotor. Furthermore, the temperature distribution at the exit of the vane passage must be controlled to generate high work extraction from the turbine. The primary metrics …

The Use Of An Ultra-Compact Combustor As An Inter-Turbine Burner For Improved Engine Performance, Jose L. Miranda Mar 2014

The Use Of An Ultra-Compact Combustor As An Inter-Turbine Burner For Improved Engine Performance, Jose L. Miranda

Theses and Dissertations

An Inter-Turbine Burner (ITB) represents a novel mechanism for generating additional work from a gas turbine engine in applications where an afterburner would typically be used. An ITB can achieve higher thermal efficiencies over a typical afterburner while also generating shaft work versus only additional thrust. In an effort to investigate the potential applications for the ITB, a numerical engine cycle comparison was made between the ITB cycle and a conventional afterburning cycle using the Numerical Propulsion System Simulation (NPSS). In the case of thrust augmentation, the ITB model outperformed the afterburning model when Thrust Specific Fuel Consumption (TSFC) is …

Optimal Uav Path Planning For Tracking A Moving Ground Vehicle With A Gimbaled Camera, Riley A. Livermore Mar 2014

Optimal Uav Path Planning For Tracking A Moving Ground Vehicle With A Gimbaled Camera, Riley A. Livermore

Theses and Dissertations

This research develops a path planning algorithm that autonomously controls a UAV to provide convoy overwatch. The optimization algorithm determines the best path to y through developing a cost function that minimizes the control effort of the UAV and the deviation from a desired slant range. A heuristic-based algorithm was developed and implemented on the autopilot to approximate the optimal solution. In flight test, the UAV successfully tracked a moving ground vehicle by continually placing the UAV's loiter point directly above the ground vehicle's current location. This method was called the \follow-me mode and provided the baseline for real-world UAV …

Development Of A Detonation Diffuser, Christopher A. Stevens Mar 2014

Development Of A Detonation Diffuser, Christopher A. Stevens

Theses and Dissertations

This research includes an investigation of the mechanisms of diffraction and reinitiation that enable a detonation diffuser. It describes a set of geometric parameters necessary to design a diffuser for a given detonable mixture and initial channel height. Predetonators with channel height less than the critical height are ineffective because detonations in small channels decouple into separate shock and combustion fronts when the channel height increases. A detonation diffuser allows the channel height to increase by utilizing the decoupled shock wave to reinitiate detonation. In the diffuser, a detonation initially decouples into separate shock and combustion fronts, and then the …

Secure Ads-B: Towards Airborne Communications Security In The Federal Aviation Administration's Next Generation Air Transportation System, Richard C. Agbeyibor Mar 2014

Secure Ads-B: Towards Airborne Communications Security In The Federal Aviation Administration's Next Generation Air Transportation System, Richard C. Agbeyibor

Theses and Dissertations

The U.S. Congress has mandated that all aircraft operating within the National Airspace System, military or civilian, be equipped with ADS-B transponders by the year 2020. The ADS-B aircraft tracking system, part of the Federal Aviation Administration's NextGen overhaul of the Air Transportation System, replaces Radar-based surveillance with a more accurate satellite-based surveillance system. However, the unencrypted nature of ADS-B communication poses an operational security risk to military and law enforcement aircraft conducting sensitive missions. The non-standard format of its message and the legacy communication channels used by its transponders make the ADS-B system unsuitable for traditional encryption mechanisms. FPE, …

Gps Multipath Reduction With Correlator Beamforming, Jason M. Barhorst Mar 2014

Gps Multipath Reduction With Correlator Beamforming, Jason M. Barhorst

Theses and Dissertations

This research effort investigates the feasibility of beamforming using a single Global Positioning System (GPS) front end. Traditional methods of beamforming use multiple front ends, typically one per antenna element. By enabling a receiver to sample a switched antenna array, the hardware cost of implementing a GPS antenna array can be significantly reduced. Similar techniques of reducing the number of receivers have been used by Locata Corporation in the design of their non-GPS positioning systems. However, Locata Corporation's local transmitters provide a signal strength much higher than GPS's signal strength. For this reason, the inclusion of low-noise amplifiers into the …

Characterization And Performance Comparison Of Low-Voltage, High-Speed, Push-Pull And Traveling-Wave Silicon Mach-Zehnder Modulators, Tristan A. Latchu

Theses and Dissertations

The well-known power and memory walls are recognized as the current bottlenecks in computing performance, and with the increasing computational load of commonly run applications, it is necessary to nd ways to alleviate the issues presented by the aforementioned bottlenecks. It is therefore necessary to not focus solely on extracting performance improvement by way of changes to the processing architecture, but rather by holistically improving the computing platform, namely the communications backbone. This work focuses on the characterization and performance comparison of two families of optical data modulators, both fundamentally Mach{Zehnder modulators (MZMs); namely, a modulator with a Push-Pull (PP) …
