Autonomous Aerial Water Sampling, John-Paul W. Ore
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Obtaining spatially separated, high frequency water samples from rivers and lakes is critical to enhance our understanding and effective management of fresh water resources. In this thesis we present an aerial water sampler and verify the system in field experiments. The aerial water sampler has the potential to vastly increase the speed and range at which scientists obtain water samples while reducing cost and effort. The water sampling system includes: 1) a mechanism to capture three 20 ml samples per mission; 2) sensors and algorithms for safe navigation and altitude approximation over water; and 3) software components that integrate and …
Development Of A Mash Tl-3 Transition Between Guardrail And Portable Concrete Barriers, David A. Gutierrez
Development Of A Mash Tl-3 Transition Between Guardrail And Portable Concrete Barriers, David A. Gutierrez
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Often, road construction causes the need to create a work zone. In these scenarios, portable concrete barriers (PCBs) are typically installed to shield workers and equipment from errant vehicles as well as prevent motorists from striking other roadside hazards. For an existing W-beam guardrail system installed adjacent to the roadway and near the work zone, guardrail sections are removed in order to place the portable concrete barrier system. The focus of this research study was to develop a proper stiffness transition between W-beam guardrail and portable concrete barrier systems. This research effort was accomplished through development and refinement of design …
Lung Alveolar And Tissue Analysis Under Mechanical Ventilation, Trenicka Rolle
Lung Alveolar And Tissue Analysis Under Mechanical Ventilation, Trenicka Rolle
Theses and Dissertations
Mechanical ventilation has been a major therapy used by physicians in support of surgery as well as for treating patients with reduced lung function. Despite its many positive outcomes and ability to maintain life, in many cases, it has also led to increased injury of the lungs, further exacerbating the diseased state. Numerous studies have investigated the effects of long term ventilation with respect to lungs, however, the connection between the global deformation of the whole organ and the strains reaching the alveolar walls remains unclear. The walls of lung alveoli also called the alveolar septum are characterized as a …
Termediator-Ii: Identification Of Interdisciplinary Term Ambiguity Through Hierarchical Cluster Analysis, Owen G. Riley
Termediator-Ii: Identification Of Interdisciplinary Term Ambiguity Through Hierarchical Cluster Analysis, Owen G. Riley
Theses and Dissertations
Technical disciplines are evolving rapidly leading to changes in their associated vocabularies. Confusion in interdisciplinary communication occurs due to this evolving terminology. Two causes of confusion are multiple definitions (overloaded terms) and synonymous terms. The formal names for these two problems are polysemy and synonymy. Termediator-I, a web application built on top of a collection of glossaries, uses definition count as a measure of term confusion. This tool was an attempt to identify confusing cross-disciplinary terms. As more glossaries were added to the collection, this measure became ineffective. This thesis provides a measure of term polysemy. Term polysemy is effectively …

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Microarray devices are useful for detecting and analyzing biological targets, such as DNAs, mRNAs, proteins, etc. Applications of microarrays range from fundamental research to clinical diagnostics and drug discovery. In this dissertation, we consider a microsphere array device with predetermined positions of the microspheres. The microspheres are conjugate on their surfaces with molecular probes to capture the targets, and the targets are identified by the microspheres' positions. We implement the microsphere arrays by employing microfluidic technology and a hydrodynamic trapping mechanism. We call our device microfluidic microsphere-trap arrays. To fully realize the potential of the device in biomedical applications, we …

Effects Of Stratospheric Ozone Recovery On Photochemistry And Ozone Air Quality In The Troposphere, H. Zhang, Shiliang Wu, Y. Huang, Y. Wang
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
There has been significant stratospheric ozone depletion since the late 1970s due to ozone-depleting substances (ODSs). With the implementation of the Montreal Protocol and its amendments and adjustments, stratospheric ozone is expected to recover towards its pre-1980 level in the coming decades. In this study, we examine the implications of stratospheric ozone recovery for the tropospheric chemistry and ozone air quality with a global chemical transport model (GEOS-Chem). With a full recovery of the stratospheric ozone, the projected increases in ozone column range from 1% over the low latitudes to more than 10% over the polar regions. The sensitivity factor …

An apparatus and method for holding a membrane, screen or other flexible planar body in tension, while providing a conduit for water or other liquid to flow to the membrane being held. The membrane extends from inside a manifold body that carries the liquid, and the manifold body supports the membrane at one edge while the membrane is pulled in tension. Liquid pressure builds up inside the manifold body, preferably by entering a pressure chamber at the top of the manifold body. At a feeding pressure in the pressure chamber the liquid is distributed to the membrane for microbe growth. …
Performance Improvement Through Velocity Triangle Optimization-Driven Redesign For Mitigating The Horseshoe Vortex In Axial Turbines, Vladislav Shulman
Performance Improvement Through Velocity Triangle Optimization-Driven Redesign For Mitigating The Horseshoe Vortex In Axial Turbines, Vladislav Shulman
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Momentum differences between the neighboring streamlines at the end wall/primary flow interaction region of an axial turbine stage induce three-dimensional vortical flow structures, such as the leading edge horseshoe vortex, resulting in significant aerodynamic performance deterioration. Reducing the effect of such flow instabilities requires turbine blade modification to discourage boundary layer roll-up, but traditional structural modification design systems can be prohibitively complex and time-intensive.
To address this problem, this study contributes a blade modification method involving airfoil shape optimization, designed to adjust the leading edge airfoil shape in horseshoe vortex-affected turbine applications. The key insight is that airfoil design (treated …

Power System State Estimation And Renewable Energy Optimization In Smart Grids, Peng Yang
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
The future smart grid will benefit from real-time monitoring, automated outage management, increased renewable energy penetration, and enhanced consumer involvement. Among the many research areas related to smart grids, this dissertation will focus on two important topics: power system state estimation using phasor measurement units (PMUs), and optimization for renewable energy integration.
In the first topic, we consider power system state estimation using PMUs, when phase angle mismatch exists in the measurements. In particular, we build a measurement model that takes into account the measurement phase angle mismatch. We then propose algorithms to increase state estimation accuracy by taking into …

3-D metal printing has the potential to solve problems in the medical, prototyping, automotive, aerospace, defense, and other engineering industries. To reach the potential of any manufacturing process, the final product’s material characteristics and how the process affects those characteristics must be understood to meet the demands of industrial applications. There is a gap in standard testing information regarding metal based 3-D metal printing processes. The purpose of this research is to fill that gap of valuable information for this manufacturing process, so that its principles can be used to design better products. Fundamental tensile and compression tests were executed …
Paint Book System Development, Dale Boynton
Paint Book System Development, Dale Boynton
Undergraduate Research Symposium
Jarraff Industries has a current Paint Book System which is out of date. The current system is simply pictures of the parts and part numbers for them. It has old versions of parts in it. This creates confusion when the current parts show up and look different. Also, new pictures have to be taken every time a new part is made, which creates a delay in the process to update the books. For a solution three different samples for new Paint Books were made to distribute to users and get feedback on what they liked and did not like about …

Effects Of Calcium Treatment On Forest Floor Organic Matter Composition Along An Elevation Gradient, Ankit Balaria, Chris E. Johnson, Peter M. Groffman
Civil and Environmental Engineering - All Scholarship
Calcium amendment is a restorative option for nutrient-depleted, acidic soils in the forests of the northeastern United States. We studied the effects of watershed-scale wollastonite (CaSiO3) application on the structural composition of soil organic matter (SOM) and hot-water extractable organic matter (HWEOM) at the Hubbard Brook Experiment Forest in New Hampshire 7-9 years after treatment, along an elevation gradient. Soils in the high-elevation spruce/fir/birch (SFB) zone contained significantly greater amounts of HWEOM compared to lower elevation hardwood soils, likely due to differences in litter quality and slower decomposition rates in colder soils at higher elevation. The only significant …

Magnetic Shape Memory Micro-Pump For Intra-Cranial Drug Delivery, Sam Barker, Eric Rhoads, Andrew Morrison, Miranda Buttram, Paul Lindquist
College of Engineering Presentations
Magnetic shape-memory alloys exhibit strong magneto-structural coupling enabling large magnetic-field-induced deformation. Local control of twinning via variable inhomogeneous magnetic fields initiates local reversible deformation. Previous work produced a valve-less micropump consisting of a Ni-Mn-Ga single crystal, a casing, and a rod magnet. The micropump successfully pumped fluid in opposite directions when the magnet was turned clockwise and counter clockwise. Our current work modifies this micropump for application in rat a head stage, which would simultaneously monitor electroencephalograph data and deliver 0.5-5.0 μl of a drug solution at 100-500 nl/min directly to the rat’s brain. These improvements and the application of …
Molecular Modification Of Cnt Junctions, Kari Mclaughlin*, Hanna Meinikheim*, Angela "Nikki" Chang
Molecular Modification Of Cnt Junctions, Kari Mclaughlin*, Hanna Meinikheim*, Angela "Nikki" Chang
College of Arts and Sciences Presentations
Carbon nanotube networks (CNNs) are increasingly finding applications as thin film transistors (TFTs), integrated circuits, and display drivers on flexible, transparent substrates. This is attributed to the higher carrier mobility of CNNs as compared to amorphous silicon and organic TFTs [1,2]. However, high electrical [3-5] and thermal [6,7] resistances at individual nanotube junctions (NJs) limit the performance of CNN devices. The resistances of the junctions are no less than an order of magnitude higher than those of individual carbon nanotubes (CNTs). This causes high power dissipation at the NJs. In the end this causes degradation of the overall device performance …

The electron spin states of zigzag graphene nanoribbon (ZGNR) edge play a pivotal role in the applications of graphene nanoribbons. However, the exact arrangements of the electron spins remain unclear to date. In this report, the electronic spin states of the ZGNR edge have been elucidated through a combination of quantum chemical investigation and previous electron spin resonance experiment observations. An alternating alpha and beta spin configuration of the unpaired electrons along the ZGNR edge is established in ambient condition without any external magnetic field, and the origin of the spin magnetism of the ZGNR edge is revealed. It paves …

This research project inspects the feasibility and capabilities of a small-scale …
Enhancement Of Mass Transfer And Electron Usage For Syngas Fermentation, James J. Orgill
Enhancement Of Mass Transfer And Electron Usage For Syngas Fermentation, James J. Orgill
Theses and Dissertations
Biofuel production via fermentation is produced primarily by fermentation of simple sugars. Besides the sugar fermentation route, there exists a promising alternative process that uses syngas (CO, H2, CO2) produced from biomass as building blocks for biofuels. Although syngas fermentation has many benefits, there are several challenges that still need to be addressed in order for syngas fermentation to become a viable process for producing biofuels on a large scale. One challenge is mass transfer limitations due to low solubilities of syngas species. The hollow fiber reactor (HFR) is one type of reactor that has the potential for achieving high …

Management of highway assets, including pavements, is immensely challenging in an era of uncertain funding for transportation agencies and higher service expectations from the public. Furthermore, the maintenance of pavement assets in good serviceable condition is one of the most cost-intensive operations for a highway agency.
Between 1996 and 2008, the Indiana DOT spending on improvement of pavement assets fluctuated between 35% and 50% of its asset management budget annually (Everett2012). Therefore, pavement managers are constantly exploring strategies to fulfill their mission of maintaining roads in good condition with the minimumbudget. Strategies may include examining the effectiveness of individual pavement …
