Coal Fires: An Environmental Disaster, Daniel Robert Miskin
Coal Fires: An Environmental Disaster, Daniel Robert Miskin
Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
The mission of the Coal Fire Gang (CFG) is to spread awareness about the global issue of uncontrolled coal fires, and to highlight them as a low-hanging fruit of immediate emissions reduction. This report summarizes CFG’s research for the WERC competition, for which this topic was chosen as an open task. Beyond raising awareness, CFG modeled, developed and built an experimentation apparatus meant to prove the validity of a relatively cheap extinguishing method which was also novel to the regions in which it could be employed. The apparatus, which simulated an underground coal fire, was used to test a sand …

Water System For Developing Countries/Disaster Relief Made With Local Materials, Cayla Tichy
Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
The United Nations estimates that water-borne illness accounts for 80% of deaths in developing nations and that nearly 1 in 6 do not have access to clean water (1). However, despite the ability to produce water in the developed world from complex streams such as wastewater or seawater, challenges remain in providing this basic resource in the developing world. Too often the approach has been to apply a high-tech solution, which requires significant technical expertise to run and significant financial resources to repair. Furthermore, as every developing nation faces different challenges, a new solution must be provided for each situation. …

Water System For Developing Countries / Disaster Relief Made With Local Materials, Dong Joon Lee
Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
As the equipment builder of the team, I was responsible for building the treadle pump, the sand filter tank, the hand pump, and generating the instructions for each equipment. Each team member was responsible for certain parts of the water purification system, but everyone worked cohesively on all parts of the design when assistance was necessary. The original design for the treadle pump was a two-man powered pump which discharged water at 15 gallons per minute. Since our system only required less than half of the flow rate, and required another person to operate the bicycle, the pump was redesigned …

Water System For Developing Countries / Disaster Relief Made With Local Materials, Lauren E. Cole
Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
At the beginning of this project, I elected to focus mainly on the electrolysis portion. I completed a lot of research on electrolysis in general, and then specifically on brine electrolysis, which is transforming a salt water solution into a sodium hypochlorite solution, or bleach. I researched all of the different types of electrode materials and purchased several electrodes in order to perform experiments. I researched several methods of electrolysis in use today. I performed several calculations about the electrolysis reaction, including the electric potential required to drive the reaction (approximately 1.0 volt), as well as what concentration of salt …
Dynamic Excitation Related Uncertainty In Ambient Vibration Testing Of A Truss Bridge, Ryan T. Dufour
Dynamic Excitation Related Uncertainty In Ambient Vibration Testing Of A Truss Bridge, Ryan T. Dufour
Civil Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
The aging and deteriorating state of bridges in the US, along with the many limitations of the visual inspection data that is used for assessing and evaluating their condition, have provided motivation for research on experimental methods to quantitatively describe and evaluate their in-situ performance and condition. Ambient vibration testing is one such global characterization approach that has been widely explored due to its low cost and ease of implementation for in-service bridges. The testing is used to identify the modal properties of the structure, typically the natural frequencies, mode shapes, and damping ratios. Although ambient vibration testing has been …

Evaluation Of The Effects Of Dynamic Excitation Characteristics On Ambient Vibration Test Results For A Multi-Girder Bridge, Gibran Santana
Civil Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
The bridge population in the US is currently aging and deteriorating rapidly. More than 30% of the bridges across the country have already exceeded their expected design life. Therefore, it is important to develop more timely, reliable and quantitative alternatives to the qualitative visual inspection approach that is currently used to evaluate these structures. One experimental approach that has been researched extensively for quantitatively characterize bridges is Ambient Vibration Testing (AVT) also known as Operational Modal Analysis (OMA). In this approach, the vibration responses of a structure due to unmeasured and uncontrolled ambient dynamic excitation are measured and analyzed to …
Temperature Sensitivity Of Foamed Warm Mix Asphalt, Ryan Michael Hagedorn
Temperature Sensitivity Of Foamed Warm Mix Asphalt, Ryan Michael Hagedorn
Civil Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Foamed warm mix asphalt (WMA) is a technology that is beginning to be utilized across the United States. Often, producers are placing foamed WMA at decreased temperatures without fully understanding the properties of this relatively new product. By studying the volumetric properties of laboratory produced foamed WMA, this study sought to better understand the temperature sensitivity of foamed WMA and the potential factors that contribute to this sensitivity. Two mix designs containing primarily limestone aggregate were tested using differing binder grades. It was determined that binder grade, binder source and potentially the inclusion of recycled asphalt pavement all influence how …

Examination Of Nitrogen To Phosphorus Ratio In Nutrient Removal From Wastewater Through Chlorella Vulgaris, Courtney L. Hill
Civil Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
A need for phosphorus removal is becoming increasingly evident as some wastewater treatment plants struggle to meet wastewater effluent nutrient requirements. High nutrient levels in wastewater effluents have also caused ongoing tension between the state of Oklahoma and Arkansas regarding the pollution of the Illinois River. This research seeks to establish the relationship between nitrogen to phosphorus ratio in wastewater and the level of nutrient reduction using Chlorella vulgaris. Seed cultures of Chlorella vulgaris were added into solutions with various ratios of nitrate to phosphate representative of treated domestic wastewater and the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus were measured in …
Shear Capacity Of Prestressed Lightweight Self-Consolidating Concrete, Micah Alan Wyssmann
Shear Capacity Of Prestressed Lightweight Self-Consolidating Concrete, Micah Alan Wyssmann
Civil Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
In prestressed members, self-consolidating concrete (SCC) has in some cases exhibited lower shear capacity than conventional concrete, which has been attributed to decreased aggregate interlock. However, little data is currently available to assess whether use of lightweight aggregate in prestressed SCC beams has further impact on aggregate interlock and shear strength. This study measured the shear capacity of six prestressed beams made from three different concrete mixtures: lightweight self-consolidating concrete (LWSCC) with expanded shale aggregate, LWSCC with expanded clay aggregate, and control normal weight SCC with limestone aggregate. Predicted shear capacities were determined based on current ACI Building Code and …

The system can use Google Maps and/or ESRI ArcGIS to generate the graphical displays. The advantage of using Google Maps …
Modeling And Simulation Of Parallel D-Statcoms With Full-Wave Rectifiers, Jason Brinsfield
Modeling And Simulation Of Parallel D-Statcoms With Full-Wave Rectifiers, Jason Brinsfield
Master's Theses
In recent years, both a significant increase in electrical demand and a large influx of intermittent renewable energy sources have put a considerable stress on the nation’s electrical grid. Conventional power flow control techniques such as capacitor banks and tap-changing transformers are incapable of adequately handling the rapid fluctuations in power supply and demand that today’s grid experiences. Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) controllers are a practical way to compensate for such rapid power fluctuations. One type of shunt FACTS controller is the Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM), which uses fully controllable switches to source or sink reactive power to a …

Investigating Present And Future Interactions Between Radio Frequency Identification, Additive Manufacturing And Supply Chain Management, Michael Nobuhiro Ochi
Master's Theses
A screening experiment was paired with research observing the past, present and futures of additive manufacturing (a.k.a. rapid prototyping, 3D printing), radio frequency identification, and supply chain management. The experiment tested different properties of objects created with a desktop fused deposition modelling printer to observe if any single factors or interactions affected the read range of embedded passive UHF RFID inlay. The combination of material and infill percentage had a statistically significant effect on read range, however the analysis is weak since the data could not justify the normality assumption of ANOVA. Furthermore, the size of the effect was small …

Model-Based Edge Detector For Spectral Imagery Using Sparse Spatiospectral Masks, Biliana S. Paskaleva, Sebastian E. Godoy, Woo-Yong Jang, Steven C. Bender, Sanjay Krishna, Majeed M. Hayat
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Two model-based algorithms for edge detection in spectral imagery are developed that specifically target capturing intrinsic features such as isoluminant edges that are characterized by a jump in color but not in intensity. Given prior knowledge of the classes of reflectance or emittance spectra associated with candidate objects in a scene, a small set of spectral-band ratios, which most profoundly identify the edge between each pair of materials, are selected to define a edge signature. The bands that form the edge signature are fed into a spatial mask, producing a sparse joint spatiospectral nonlinear operator. The first algorithm achieves edge …
Theoretical Modeling Of Laser-Induced Absorption Phenomena In Optical Materials, Chris Ferris
Theoretical Modeling Of Laser-Induced Absorption Phenomena In Optical Materials, Chris Ferris
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
For over five decades, laser-induced damage and breakdown in optical materials has been an active field of research. As laser systems continually advance, new opportunities to study laser/material interactions arise. This thesis begins by presenting the damage mechanisms and absorption phenomena that lead to laser-induced breakdown. An in depth understanding of these processes led to the development of rate equations that describe electron density growth in a material exposed to a strong electromagnetic wave. These rate equations laid the foundation for the construction of a theoretical model. By using variable laser and material parameter inputs, the model calculates the laser-induced …

Analysis, Optimization, And Implementation Of A Uav-Based Wireless Power Transfer System, Andrew Mittleider
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Wireless power transfer is rapidly advancing in its ability to efficiently transfer power to a variety of devices.
As the efficiency increases, more applications for these systems arise. Since magnetic resonant wireless power transfer can only transfer a small amount of power, most current applications only focus on powering low-powered devices.
Wireless Sensor Networks are composed of many low-powered nodes which currently require human interaction to remain powered. We propose recharging a low-powered Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) with a magnetic resonant wireless power transfer system attached to a quadrotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV).
This thesis addresses three main challenges with …

Algae: Opportunities For Biomass Feedstock Production, Wastewater Treatment And Educational Outreach, Trina Cassandra Halfhide
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Algae are a diverse group of simple organisms that lack roots, stems or leaves and are able to use sunlight, carbon dioxide, and nutrients to produce complex compounds, such as carbohydrates, proteins and lipids. These compounds, especially lipids, are highly sought-after by agricultural, nutraceutical and energy interests. Although there is great potential for algae derived biofuels, there are technical and economic challenges associated with their cultivation. Relevant to this dissertation, the environmental impacts associated with algae cultivation can be reduced by using municipal and agricultural wastewaters as a water and nutrient source. This research was divided into three sections to …
Assessing The Impacts Of Unrestricted Pesticide Use In Small-Scale Agriculture On Water Quality And Associated Human Health And Ecological Implications In An Indigenous Village In Rural Panam[Aacute], Sarah Louise Watson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In 2014, the global pesticide industry's projected worth is $52 billion and by 2020, the developing world will make up one-third of the world's chemical production and consumption. Pesticides can have unintended negative consequences for human health and the environment, especially in the developing world where regulations are loose or nonexistent. One country with unrestricted use of pesticides is Panam[aacute], especially in Santa Rosa de Cucunatí. In this indigenous village, small-scale farmers and ranchers spray paraquat, glyphosate, picloram, and 2,4-D at higher elevations than the spring water source of a gravity-fed water system, the river, and the village. The objective …

Finite Difference Modeling Of Surface-~Wave Scattering For Shallow Cavity Detection, Heston Travis Norcott
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Data collection and analysis of scattering of Rayleigh-type surface waves are investigated for locating shallowly buried cavities. Surface-based seismic experiments conducted by others at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Engineering Geophysics Test Site (EGTS) demonstrate scattering of Rayleigh waves caused by buried empty barrels (essentially air-filled cavities). The interpretation of the data is complicated by factors such as the presence of a high-velocity geologic layer just below the cavity.
This research uses a finite-difference seismic wave propagation code to compute time histories for a model that represents the Engineering Geophysics Test Site. By adding cavities to a background …

Optimization Of Wastewater Microalgae Pretreatment For Acetone, Butanol, And Ethanol Fermentation, Yessica A. Castro
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) fermentation from wastewater microalgae by Clostridium saccharoperbutylacetonicum N1-4 is a novel bioprocess that utilizes waste substrate to generate valuable solvents. Butanol, the most abundant product resulting from ABE fermentation, is an environmentally safe and high performing fuel that can be utilized as a drop-in-fuel; however, high operational costs and low ABE yield present challenge in scale-up of the process. The utilization of algae as a substrate requires pretreatment prior to fermentation to increase the bioavailability of the algal fermentable sugars and to improve the conditions of the pre-fermentation medium. The purpose of this thesis was to optimize wastewater …

Laboratory Modeling Of Erosion Potential In Dam Foundations Due To Foundation Voids, Tyler K. Coy
Laboratory Modeling Of Erosion Potential In Dam Foundations Due To Foundation Voids, Tyler K. Coy
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Earthen dams and levees create high gradients and increased hydraulic pressures in the underlying soil, which can lead to erosion and other challenges. Karst formations and other defects such as cracks in the foundation and/or abutments can lead to failure mechanisms such as internal erosion. Generally these voids or cracks are filled with soil, but due to the increased pressures and gradients that dams and levees create, the original soil is pushed out, thus creating a void that acts as a conduit for more soil to follow. Different soils will erode at different rates and some even create a natural …
Impact Of Organic Matter Composition From Urban Streams And Storm Water On Oxygen Consumption In The Jordan River, Jacob Matt Richardson
Impact Of Organic Matter Composition From Urban Streams And Storm Water On Oxygen Consumption In The Jordan River, Jacob Matt Richardson

The water quality of the Jordan River has been the subject of a Total Maximum Daily Load study conducted under the direction of the Utah Department of Environmental Quality's Water Quality Division (DWQ). They have determined the oxygen impairment issues in the river are most likely tied to the amount of organic material entering the river from various sources.
The focus of the study conducted by Jacob Richardson was organic material that enters the Salt Lake City storm drain system, and is eventually released into the Jordan River. He found that leaves, grass, and wood particles that enter the storm …
Exploiting Sparsity And Dictionary Learning To Efficiently Classify Materials In Hyperspectral Imagery, Andrew E. Pound
Exploiting Sparsity And Dictionary Learning To Efficiently Classify Materials In Hyperspectral Imagery, Andrew E. Pound
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) produces spatial images with pixels that, instead of consisting of three colors, consist of hundreds of spectral measurements. Because there are so many measurements for each pixel, analysis of HSI is difficult. Frequently, standard techniques are used to help make analysis more tractable by representing the HSI data in a different manner.
This research explores the utility of representing the HSI data in a learned dictionary basis for the express purpose of material identification and classification. Multiclass classification is performed on the transformed data using the RandomForests algorithm. Performance results are reported.
In addition to classification, single …
Cyber-Physical Systems With Multi-Unmanned Aerial Vehicle-Based Cooperative Source Seeking And Contour Mapping, Jinlu Han
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This dissertation presents the design, simulation, and execution of multi-unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV)-based cooperative source seeking and contour mapping with cyber-physical systems (CPS). Both fixed-wing UAVs and vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) UAVs are developed as the flight platforms. Compared with single UAV, multi-UAV formation with advanced cooperative control strategies has more advantages for radiative source detection, especially in urgent tasks, for example, detecting nuclear radiation before deploying the salvage. A contour mapping algorithm for the nuclear radiation is proposed, and practical predefined waypoint-based formation flights are realized. Next, four scenarios are developed for multi-UAV-based cooperative source seeking and contour …
